As an image I like Vanessa’s best but I learned something new on Daniel’s because of how he talked about the mood he wanted saying he would only lift the highlights, and then Vanessa talking about how the paper affects the detail. Solid team effort! 😃
When I first saw Danial's image I thought "I don't know about that image" and felt Vanessa's images were nicer, but as the video went on Danial's image started to grow on me and I have to say I like the subdued colours and moody feel, it actually gave me a Janice Joplin kind of feel,👍😎👍Both images are great, but I have to go with Daniels image this time, and he didn't even use a Flash or Strobe 🤔🤣
I love Daniel Norton. He’s one of those people who, if he were a patient of mine, he’d make a shitty shift great because of his emotional awareness and ability to use appropriate humor for the situation. Great personality. Great skill. His compositions are just amazing.
Of the two, I vote for your image with the red background although they are both great. I can’t believe Daniel didn’t choose his silhouette shot though. That one was my fave of the bunch!
In my mind you are definitely the winner. I like moody shots,, but I think the light reflecting back into the models face and that gorgeous bright red background look fantastic when printed.
Daniel got the word "a smidge" into yet another video! Am I watching too many videos with that guy?😀 Actually liked the opening image by Daniel the most - where she stands as a silhouette framed by the building. Great composition! Would go with Daniels image if choosing for my own wall, with Joy for a commercial poster. Both images are a wonderful illustration that gear matters but the photographer matters the most. Please more videos like this one - great content! 👌💪👌
Well Done both of you!!!!!! I use a 5D Classic as well as a newly acquired 6D. I also bought a used Sigma art 35mm f1.4. Pair that with the 5D Classic then the images are amazing!!!!!!
I don't know why it took me so long to find this excellent series of videos you put out on this topic. I am so impressed by how you and your fellow photographers get such amazing photographs with gear that isn't priced in the stratosphere. It gives me hope that with the gear I have I may someday achieve results similar to yours. Thank you!
Lots of fun... I got a Canon EOS D30 (Oct 2000), with a 3.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor that was a pivotal change in the camera market. For the first time a larger-format CMOS sensor that provided a much cheaper solution, with less noise and used less energy (and also attracted much less sensor dust) than the previous units utilizing the CCD innards from Kodak - at about 1/10th the price. I love shooting with old gear to remind myself that it's more about the technique than the tech - even though I usually shoot with high-end DSLRs and the R5 and R6! Love the show!
I really admire Daniel's work, and if I analyze all the photos I think he's surgical with his shots, and probably I would pick his shot if the print was the other headshot photo, but my vote goes to Vanessa she well deserves, she nailed choosing the photo, and also her way to work was fun to watch, especially posing the model.
Great video Vanessa , I still shoot film from time to time , I then digitise them . I also enjoyed you're comparison with the Canon R5 and 6 , I'm going to invest in an R 6
One more thing... Yesterday I discovered your channel and these "Budget Photography" series... Today I finished watching the complete series 👍🏼 My favorite episodes are the ones with Robert Hall or Manny Ortiz (so much creativity with the shower, gels, and speedlights) and this one, with the great Daniel Norton 😍
Thanks for this, great fun as always. It's really good to see what professional photographers can get out of ordinary gear. On this occasion I think you shaded it.. your shots were well worked. All the best.
Different style, different personality surely will produced different outcome even shooting with the same camera gear set up, or same model and same location. Both are executed great for me both are winner.
Thanks for such an engaging video. That was really close! I vote for Vanessa's, in part because of the vibrant pink, and also I like that Julianna's eyes are engaging us directly. I appreciate the deep and seemingly candid emotion in Daniel's image as well as the classic Rembrandt lighting. I liked the glimpses that we got of his power-posed silhouette even better and would have likely voted that one the winner overall! It was fun seeing what you two could do with available light. Maybe next time you can show us some entry-level location lighting, too. 🥰
These are two opposite ends of the spectrum. Thanks for the shootout. My Goddaughter is a three-year old version of Julianna. She loves to pose, and is very photogenic. Vanessa, you are DEFINITELY the Queen of poses!!
The EOS 5D was and remains a camera that delivers high quality images with pleasant noise characteristics and lovely color. Except for the slow and kludgy interface, there is very little disadvantage in using it. You should downgrade to something like a Powershot from the same era to really push up against the capabilities of budget gear.
I kind of like that they have kind of old but professional gear. The 5d/5dm2 with the 50mm stm is really affordable and can still give you high quality images. But I also wouldnt mind apsc sensored cameras. A canon 50d/600d with the 50mm stm might be interesting.
I like Vanessa's photo better. A little more creative & the contrast in black/ red thing. As soon as as she said she was going to lay down & shoot up toward the red stringy things hanging down, I figured it was going to be one of the best from this shoot. Either way, fun vid.
At one time that was a pretty awesome camera to have. Prints are great! I thought I was leaning towards Daniel but when I saw the prints it kind of made them equal bc the crop/framing was interesting on Vanessa's so I thought it moved it up a notch. Both of you are great.
I've been doing photography for 3 years now. I started off with 35mm film, and as I got more serious I picked up a 5d classic and a 24-70 Lii which both served me well. Recently upgraded to the song alpha system but I'm keeping my 5d classic body and a 50mm just out of sentiment and because of how solid this setup feels. I will say, skip this 50mm lens and get the second gen 50. This older plastic 50 always seems muddy, and has a lot of focusing problems.
loved the results from the printer, I have the pro-1000 and I am curious to see what the rough art paper looks like! love your content it teaches soooo much!
I watch both photographer videos. Like to refresh memory or what trending now. Did some collaboration with few designers , Photographers, and non -profit.
Prefer Daniel's silhouette, but thats not a choice so will have to go with Vanessa. Interesting that this was such a short shoot compared to some of the indoor ones from earlier in the series.
Let me just say you achieved your goal to show us all how professionals make the image, not the equipment. Check. Well done! As for choosing the best shot, even before you produced the image, when you composed that shot looking up at the model with the colorful ceiling flyers above, I knew I would like that shot best. The only way it would have lost is if you didn’t capture focus right. Sure enough, you made it. Yeah, definite winner.
I just love that rim lighting you managed to get down Julianna's arm from the light coming in from the side. But I have to give this to Dan. Dark and Moody is definitely my style that I love shooting and he absolutely nailed it. Maybe try adding your hand reaching for her hand in the next shootout! I dunno. Just what I thought you were going to do. Like a POV type of shot. Both were excellent.
Both images rock, but my style of photography leans toward Vanessa’s photo so I naturally like her’s better. Vanessa I also have a Canon F1, I would like to get the inside of the camera cleaned up and a new battery for it. Do you have a suggestion on where I can send it? Thank you & peace, love & happiness to both you and Daniel 📸✌🏼
Awesome Video! Great job Vanessa and Daniel! It's truly amazing to see what you can do with budget cameras. I have a canon M50 and I must say I love when you use that in your Budget Photography Gear Shootout. Will there be a Budget Photography Featuring Jessica Kobeissi in the future?
Vanessa, your shot gets my vote, i prefer portrait images with more pop and i think the gloss paper may have been even better for your image. But it does demonstrate that decent camera's are always just that decent cameras, but you have to know how to use em, enjoyed the vid :)
Ah i cant pick between those two they each have their own qualities.. I love that Vanessa got that beautiful pink backdrop but i preferred Daniels close up on the wall or the silloett
both look realy awsome, and i think its gotta be hard to take a bad photo of this gorgouse model . Vaneca you are truly a Joy! love from Zion :) כי חדות יהוה היא מעזכם...
I'm going to have to vote for Daniel's photo. For the photo of Vanessa, perhaps I would have printed it on glossy paper, in this way maybe it would highlight the reds in the background more, giving more strength to the photo as a whole.
First rule of Daniel Norton Challenges is that Daniel always wins! Do one of these with Chris Niccolls that would be a ton of fun he is an awesome person.
I like the photo Vanessa captured. The pose, backround and exposure are excellent. Though Daniel's photo is still good overall, I like less moody photo's most of the time.
I found a used 5D classic, for about $200 with a 28 mm prime. It's a great walk around camera, and it makes very nice images. It's surprisingly easy to use and very light. Sorry to hear about the F-1 not working. And Daniel's shot is so moody. Wow. SOC...But he's a ringer. Not fair.
Well Vanessa I came to see what you had to say but laughed when I realized you had somehow convinced Daniel to leave his front porch and his studio. Great Vidoe sorry you had trouble with the film challenge. Perhaps another time. Hate to say it but you really picked the wrong pic of yours to print but you still beat Daniel. Sorry my friend.. Happy New Year
You guys should try using budget camera like canon 600d or 1200d Those cameras are like 'budget' cameras to begin with not very good digic 4 processors It's very easy to miss focus with these cameras and the auto focus is so bad
Both look awesome but I will vote for Vanessa’s, simply because of my happy mood right now. When I feel a bit blue, Daniel’s photo will be my choice ☺.
As an image I like Vanessa’s best but I learned something new on Daniel’s because of how he talked about the mood he wanted saying he would only lift the highlights, and then Vanessa talking about how the paper affects the detail. Solid team effort! 😃

I love Daniel Norton. He’s one of those people who, if he were a patient of mine, he’d make a shitty shift great because of his emotional awareness and ability to use appropriate humor for the situation. Great personality. Great skill. His compositions are just amazing.
I can’t choose. Daniel’s looks like a close up shot from a movie and Vanessa’s like a campaign ad. Love both.
Haha I think that’s pretty indicative of each of our styles
Two of my favorite youtube photographers together in one video! Yay!
Of the two, I vote for your image with the red background although they are both great. I can’t believe Daniel didn’t choose his silhouette shot though. That one was my fave of the bunch!
exactly my thoughts as well.
Yup, I thought the strong woman silhouette was his best.
In my mind you are definitely the winner. I like moody shots,, but I think the light reflecting back into the models face and that gorgeous bright red background look fantastic when printed.
Great video, always learning from both your posts.
Thank you for sharing. I love the color in your picture but both are great.
Daniel got the word "a smidge" into yet another video! lol I do say smidge a lot!
HOLY CRAP…two of my favorite photographers! Great video…I cannot decide which one is better…totally different vibes. Loved all of the shots.
So fun shooting with Daniel finally!!
I'm a regular viewer of Daniel on RUclips. Both images are great, different styles. I definitely will follow Vanessa more often from now on.
Very different “moods”.
Both are great.
Ultimate winner is Julianna. Can't compare two different kinds of photos. Overall.. Vanessa's photo looks great
Yeah she always beats us
With that gear you two shared , these photos went out fantastic when they came out on print from the canon pro 200 happy new year to both of you ..
happy new year!
Love ❤ it...
Hanging out with the pro's....📸 🙏 👍
Any picture that the model was in...won...🏆
Well Done both of you!!!!!! I use a 5D Classic as well as a newly acquired 6D. I also bought a used Sigma art 35mm f1.4. Pair that with the 5D Classic then the images are amazing!!!!!!
Brilliant fun. Two of my favourite youtubers. Vanessa's wins.
I don't know why it took me so long to find this excellent series of videos you put out on this topic. I am so impressed by how you and your fellow photographers get such amazing photographs with gear that isn't priced in the stratosphere. It gives me hope that with the gear I have I may someday achieve results similar to yours. Thank you!
So happy you found it and like it ☺️ thanks for being here
i love the half black and silver background the model it side view wow thats cool and power...
Both of them. You guys are on a different level!
Have to call it a draw both are awesome. Super fun shoot with ancient gear with images taking centre stage as it should be.
:-)
I have to say … this one is too hard to choose… I really enjoy both equally!!!
Tough to call , great work !!!!, Oh and by the way, you are gorgeous too ❤️
You nailed it, Vanesa!. The one with red in the background is awesome
Thx ☺️
Vanessa's image. I love the contrasting background.
Can we get a rematch using speedlights? Really enjoyed the one you did with Manny Ortiz? Or maybe one with Seth Miranda?
Of the final two, Yours gets my vote. I like the colors and appreciate the lighter mood of it. Photography so subjective.
Lots of fun... I got a Canon EOS D30 (Oct 2000), with a 3.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor that was a pivotal change in the camera market. Fun stuff! I _really_ like your so creative shot, Vanessa, so that gets my vote.
Great video Vanessa , I still shoot film from time to time , I then digitise them .
I also enjoyed you're comparison with the Canon R5 and 6 , I'm going to invest in an R 6
Thx for watching! You’ll love the r6
One more thing... Yesterday I discovered your channel and these "Budget Photography" series... Today I finished watching the complete series 👍🏼
My favorite episodes are the ones with Robert Hall or Manny Ortiz (so much creativity with the shower, gels, and speedlights) and this one, with the great Daniel Norton 😍
Aw yay thanks for being here!
I like both of them. The moody feel with the photo from Daniel and the colors on yours.
I love Daniel Norton's attitude and pictures, but Vanessa, you are my winner! And what about the 5D???!!! That was my very first camera crush! 😍😍😍
Thanks for this, great fun as always. It's really good to see what professional photographers can get out of ordinary gear. On this occasion I think you shaded it.. your shots were well worked. All the best.
Vanessa's image is my pick - the background just pops and separates from the model's face so beautifully. Nice work!!
Different style, different personality surely will produced different outcome even shooting with the same camera gear set up, or same model and same location. Both are executed great for me both are winner.
Ohh nice 2 of my favs 👍😁
That is the exact camera and lens I love so much to use for portraits. AF can be rough, but the images are oh so good.
It was fun seeing what you two could do with available light. Maybe next time you can show us some entry-level location lighting, too. 🥰
Both have a different vibe of expressions .for me I choose joy over sadness! 😁
Vanessa, would you make an instructional video on what "extra" settings/edits that needs to be done on a photo before printing it on your new printer?
I honestly do absolutely noting - just hit print through photoshop!
No contest…Vanessa wins
Hands down with the brilliant color scheme. Sorry Daniel, you’re both my favorite photographers. What a fun video.
These are two opposite ends of the spectrum. Thanks for the shootout. My Goddaughter is a three-year old version of Julianna. She loves to pose, and is very photogenic. Vanessa, you are DEFINITELY the Queen of poses!!
Whaaaaaat?! Daniel Norton AND Vanessa Joy?! I'm, in!
So fun!
I like the colors and the background. Vanessa for the win
Vanessa have more contemporary photo, and I prefer it compared to the other.
Cheers! Nice line up of videos you're bringing to us!
I can't compare them... both represent their styles so well. My preference would change with my mood.
Fantastic to see Dan. I honestly think it’s a draw. You both made some awesome images 👌

But I also wouldnt mind apsc sensored cameras. A canon 50d/600d with the 50mm stm might be interesting.
Great point! powershot would really test them due to it's various limitations.
Great shoots both!!, but i Will go for the emotional mood, Daniel wins! But yours is so creative, congrats!!
Convention Hall is ABSOLUTELY one of my top 5 favorite places to shoot in Jersey!
It’s the best!!
I like Vanessa's photo better. A little more creative & the contrast in black/ red thing. As soon as as she said she was going to lay down & shoot up toward the red stringy things hanging down, I figured it was going to be one of the best from this shoot. Either way, fun vid.
Out of the final four, I like the bottom right. But, I liked Daniel's silhouette, over all:) Really great video though. Thank you:)
The silhouette was amazing!!
Love Daniel. What a cool dude.
He is ☺️
Hard to pick, but my vote goes to Vanessa’s. I really enjoy these videos and seeing different styles. Thanks for the inspirations.
I like yours with the red background best.
At one time that was a pretty awesome camera to have. Prints are great! I thought I was leaning towards Daniel but when I saw the prints it kind of made them equal bc the crop/framing was interesting on Vanessa's so I thought it moved it up a notch. Both of you are great.

I liked Daniel’s discarded shot.
loved the results from the printer, I have the pro-1000 and I am curious to see what the rough art paper looks like!
love your content it teaches soooo much!
Yay happy you think so ☺️
i love budget set up... u can see really a budget setup what is the ultimate result..
I vote for your picture. I find Daniel's rather dark and dull while yours has brightness and more life to it.
I watch both photographer videos. Like to refresh memory or what trending now. Did some collaboration with few designers , Photographers, and non -profit.
Nice!
both images are great. I vote for Vanessa though as I really like the unusual angle and the red color of the fringe hanging down.
Prefer Daniel's silhouette, but thats not a choice so will have to go with Vanessa. Interesting that this was such a short shoot compared to some of the indoor ones from earlier in the series.
I thought the same thing. I just love that super powerful pose yet the mystery of the subject.
Awesome Asbury Park!
Let me just say you achieved your goal to show us all how professionals make the image, not the equipment. Check. Well done!
As for choosing the best shot, even before you produced the image, when you composed that shot looking up at the model with the colorful ceiling flyers above, I knew I would like that shot best. Daniel Norton My absolute favorite photographer on RUclips.
Thanks!

The moment Vanessa said she wanted to do that picture i knew it would be my favorite. And it was.
awww yay
Ah i cant pick between those two they each have their own qualities.. I love that Vanessa got that beautiful pink backdrop but i preferred Daniels close up on the wall or the silloett
I think the real winner is the 5d here wow what an amazing camera from the past. Voting for Daniel on this one.
Lol agreed
both look realy awsome, and i think its gotta be hard to take a bad photo of this gorgouse model . Vaneca you are truly a Joy! love from Zion :) כי חדות יהוה היא מעזכם...
Mattias burling said it first: the 5D classic colors!
Entertaining at best!
Woot 😁
I would love to see one with entry level dslrs and just the kit lens
I'm going to have to vote for Daniel's photo. For the photo of Vanessa, perhaps I would have printed it on glossy paper, in this way maybe it would highlight the reds in the background more, giving more strength to the photo as a whole.
First rule of Daniel Norton Challenges is that Daniel always wins! Do one of these with Chris Niccolls that would be a ton of fun he is an awesome person.

I like the photo Vanessa captured. The pose, backround and exposure are excellent. Though Daniel's photo is still good overall, I like less moody photo's most of the time.
Tough choice, thumbs up to Vanessa.
I like Vanessa's because of the highlight hair against the red. both are good though.
I found a used 5D classic, for about $200 with a 28 mm prime. It's a great walk around camera, and it makes very nice images. It's surprisingly easy to use and very light. Sorry to hear about the F-1 not working.

Is 5d a budget camera?
It’s like $300
My vote: Daniel! Great shots Vanessa.
You guys should try using budget camera like canon 600d or 1200d
Those cameras are like 'budget' cameras to begin with not very good digic 4 processors
It's very easy to miss focus with these cameras and the auto focus is so bad
Want to buy me one? I’ll use it!
We all know you have enough money for that 😆😆
Daniel 🙏🏾♥️👌🏾
#DanielNorton I like how I feel when I look at it. I also like that it makes me think about what the subject might be thinking about…
I like yours best but both are very good.
Both look awesome but I will vote for Vanessa’s, simply because of my happy mood right now. When I feel a bit blue, Daniel’s photo will be my choice ☺.
First place goes to your beautiful model. Vanessa, then Daniel. The location was interesting.
