One of most important point not discussed is Privacy Policy. For example Google Drive admits that it scans every single byte you upload (for security reasons). I'm interested if other providers also do the same?

Update: Google Drive for Desktop will have fully replaced Google Backup and Sync by October 1st, 2021. I'm using it now, and I can say that it's pretty neat. Thanks for providing this community service. It was well presented and the best “nutshell” on this topic I have seen to date. I would add that from my perspective Dropbox offers more integrations than any of the others. It is their competitive advantage IMHO. Many more and smaller, special purpose tools “hook on” to Dropbox than any of the others. Thanks again, excellent content.

Like you, I sold a computer consulting company in 2019, so I’m semi-retired and guilty of being an Apple fan-boy. Personal cloud storage is very interesting versus enterprise cloud and software. I’m cancelling my 20 year Dropbox account because there are too many free options. In particular 15gb with each Google account, Amazon Photos (unlimited), OneDrive included with an Office license, and iCloud (so well integrated with my Mac, iPhone and iPad). DropBox was an innovator, but no need to pay for storage these days 😁

Great review! I am currently using three out of the five - Google, MS OneDrive, and iCloud. The first two I use both personal and work related. As of late since purchasing a Surface Pro X I’ve been using OneDrive and MS Suite alot more. Their word document and excel, IMO, have better features compared to Google. But in terms of collaboration with colleagues, Google takes the cake for me, as well as backing up personal photos. And I use the iCloud as part of a family plan saving photos from my iPhone.

I really want to use OneDrive, but the fact that it won't let you sync any folder on ANY location in your PC is a turn off for me. You can only sync files in the same hard drive OneDrive is installed on. With Google Drive, it doesn't matter where your file is located in your PC, you can point to it.

I’m soo glad that I found your channel, I’ve been looking for the latest reviews on cloud storage. I already use iCloud & Google Photos. The reason I went with Google coz of the free 15GB of cloud storage, but since then I’ve paid & upgraded the storage.
The only problem I’m getting now is that Google got rid of they desktop app on Mac & the only way to download files or Photos is to go on they’re site on a browser, which sometimes with me does crash or take too long to completely download.
In the past I tried a lot of cloud storage and just wondering now is either OneDrive or Dropbox any good since they’ve first came out, coz I haven’t used either one for a long while & I’m looking for cloud storage that still uses a desktop app that I can use..

i'm pretty sure I heard you say both onedrive nor googledrive backup your data. I'm confused, I thought the whole purpose of these services is that they backup local files/folders from hard drives held on a PC to remote storage, at data centres. My whole reason for looking at this review was to consider how I can safely and securely back-up photos/media and documents held on my PC to somewhere where I would easily be able to recover them, should my hard drives fail? Can you explain? Are you saying that I could not do that?

I use external drive only for work due to privacy. However, I’m currently currently doing a big photo organization (my biggest reason for cloud/storage/backup). I am new to managing storage and, therefore, have various media stored in icloud and google drive; in the above video, you mentioned you use 3 cloud storage platforms so my question is:
Is it because you: 1) benefit from utilizing all the free cloud storage from each OR 2) use each platform for different forms of media ?? I am trying to save money but it seems very difficult to manage media when it is in multiple places! So if you could incorporate information as to what video helps you manage your media (photos, videos, voicemails & documents, I would be so grateful!!! Victoria

Thanks for another great video. Just want an opinion....if I am willing to pay for more storage from a provider like Google for example, is it ok to also use that as backup as well? Or should you also consider a service that is more focused on backup (i am considering backup)? But considering that, in the main, these major cloud storage providers are reliable, is pretty much fine to have 2 copies these days of your data - your original/local copy and the copy in your cloud storage? Do you also use a separate cloud back-up? Or just don't bother?

Nice overview. You didn’t explain who needs block level update. If it is small files like code bases then it doesn’t matter. If it is large files like video it never changes. So who has large files which change? Any automated store like a database files may make sense. Only a handful of us probably do that.

Thanks for the video presentation and context information Pete - very informative indeed.
I'm also an Apple fanboy and use 2Tb subscription to iCloud. However, having just bought an M1 Mac Mini with limited storage, I found out an iCloud usage problem. My approach was to logically 'segregate' my data into 2 distinct folders: the 1st, data sync'd to my apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mini) which most users will use, the 2nd a data folder holding circa 1TB of data that I just want to keep safe in the cloud - but not requred to be on my Mac Mini SSD. A not unreasonable requirement I thought... Clearly Apple thinks differently - as advised by their support team - because this is just not possible. Yes you can selectively sync files/folders on your device(s) but not the other way around! I don't have enough technical knowledge to understand why this (simple request) isn't possible.
Do you have a view on which cloud provider offers this option today? I am looking at pCloud's lifetime storage, but a little expert guidance would be helpful. Many thanks.

I’ve been heavily thinking about getting DropBox but I’m not fully sure. I’m a 100% apple fan boy; iphone, ipad, mac and all the stuff, but I want something that works with everything. Let’s say I want to access my files from some other location like lets say someone’s phone, or the computers at the library Or just anything that isn’t Apple, I don’t iCloud would do it for me for those aspects. But DropBox seems pretty universal, so I think that’s a good option.
Although my question remains, is it a good back-up solution? I mainly want something where I can store my files, lets say pictures, documents and all that stuff, so that in case for some reason, I loose my phone, or my computer or anything, I can get all those files back into a new device. And 2, can I use it to free up space on my device, like lets say my storage is full, can I delete them on the device and let them be stored on the cloud to free up space? Does Dropbox get the job done in those 2 main aspects?

And then, I disconnected the external drive, re-connected the external drive and to my great dismay, OneDrive stopped synching. I called Microsoft who politely told me that that is the way it functions. They suggested I re-install and re-synch. Yeah...sure. Moved to Google Drive. No problem with disconnecting and then re-connecting. Drive re-synched. But...while working I would get a message that Google is "Items removed". For some reason, Drive interpreted temporary files needed for engineering finite element software for some reason have to be deleted. Drive crashed the software and I had to simply end the task in the Task Manager to continue. Call support. "That's how it functions. What's your problem?" So, I'm currently without a synchronized Cloud and am manually backing up to my old friend DropBox.

Is it always the case that an online sync service (eg Dropbox) means when you (inadvertently) delete a file on your PC it is also deleted on the backup? I’ve just had this with Carbonite and it’s so annoying!

    • @johnwaine56
      @johnwaine56 3 года назад

@@PeteMatheson But that doesn't allow for user error. Delete something by mistake only to find the backup has deleted it too just adds insult to injury!
After my earlier near -disaster, I've been setting up Exposure 6 export templates so copies of selected photos go to a folder that will sync to Dropbox and also to a local folder that I can then copy to a backup local external hard drive. Hopefully I that will protect me from my own mistakes and also if Dropbox fails - all with a nice simple routine. Would that work?

Pete, you sound as though you are Uk based and so am I. So tell me, how long do you think that it should take to upload 65.5GB to One Drive on a fibre line that runs at 7.47Mbps? Yep, that's right 20 hours, 55 minutes, 20 seconds. How long does it actually take? Over 3 days and counting. Just check the Microsoft forums, when Microsoft aren't deleting the posts or shutting down the forums. It is a basket case!

OneDrive for business is in the running for the single worst piece of "software" (it shouldn't even be called that. Vapourware may be more appropriate) I have ever used in my 30 years of working with computers. It can not even perform its most basic functions a lot of the time. The number of man-hours wasted trying to solve simple issues that almost never arise using google drive or similar is absolutely astounding. I would avoid OneDrive at all costs. Not sure about personal accounts but for business use...I would rather swallow razor blades.

Onedrive Business is great, I store my RAW image files there and whenever I need any, it's quickly available for editing. Also, it doesn't lock files like Dropbox so I'm able to save while the file is being uploaded. Plus it's cheaper than Dropbox and uploads faster than Google Drive

I've noticed there are a lot of Brit tech reviewers and Brit running shoe reviewers. They seem to really like computers and running over there in England. My guess is that they're on their computers all the time. Get depressed. Then go out running to alleviate their depression. Running in the rain most likely. While thinking about returning to their tiny apartments and pale, bird-faced wives. What a sad little country.
