- Today’s task is to put in the tunnel lights and test the exterior lights. Paul is helping with some welding and you can see him doing other Narrowboaty things on his channel, Narrowboat Hands

The nav lights make the boat look like its really coming back to life, lovely to see a bit of coloured light outside. Not sure how long those sticky-out tunnel lights will last though! I hadnt noticed that the original well deck had been filled over as an extension, 'You can hardly see the join', as Eric Morcambe used to say. Nice vid again James.
Oh you can see the join close up !!!
I can’t see a tunnel taking them out - me walking past possibly, yeah
Hi James nothing like a boat at night lit up especially in the winter snow. Well done. Keith & Helen Melbourne Auzz
Paul has hands out of a Mad Max movie. Brilliant!
James, your videos are brilliant and very informative, not to mention getting quite cinematic. I was impressed with both the navigation and spotlights when turned on as when shown in past videos i wasn’t sure if they were going to be bright enough. Now that you have been doing more external jobs on the cruise liner it feels the project is starting to ramp up getting ready for your maiden launch... bet you can’t wait👨✈️🌊
I had a similar worry about the spots. The nav lights need to be bright by definition. The outside is slowly taking shape - although it’s snowing today so no outdoor work really !!
I can’t wait for the maiden launch of this version of the boat - I think this is her 8th launch as a “new” boat !!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt I’m sure you’ll find some inside tasks to fill your snow day
Hello again James, having read all the comments, the night travel light. Many years ago I dismantled a 12 inch high Pool Trophy I had won leaving me with the middle column, a very decorative piece of turned hardwood about 9 inch in length. To the top I fitted a smallish vehicle spot-light with a powerful beam and for the base one of my magnets I mentioned. Three metres of cable with cigar lighter plug made it very portable. The magnet would hold it to the port side if approaching a left hand bend, the roof, or other side. It was Brill.
Brilliant James. Loving the progress. Yes as Sarky B. says those steps need care!!
Thanks for the channel mention mate. 🙌🙌
Love the way you started the vlog and I also like you letting us be a part of everything that you are doing to the boat 🚣♀️
Thank you - warts and all !!
I’m running out of entrance points now tho
Well I am losing at the ‘where’s Jame going to pop out from. Proper laughing out loud on this one. The boat is coming to life now.
That’s it though !! I’ve run out of ideas !!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt lol don’t worry about inventing new ways to appear on screen. Maybe vairy between your cold open, you talking to us, walking to camera, popping out from behind something. These could then be your thing for the channel.
Morning James, Nice glow from the fire, You’ll always feel much better when at the end of the day you can at least warm your bones, Lights look good also, on and upwards 👍👍👍👍
Great video. Regarding the magnet for your camera you should consider something along the lines of a magnetic base that engineers use. The have a magnetic lock that can be turned on and off.
If you look for "Dial Test Indicator Magnetic Base" on most popular auction sites you'll find loads of them.
Hi James as there are no other comments, I can say something without being seen, ha ha. A taxi sign normally has 4 rectangular magnets on them to hold them on the vehicle roof about 3x2 inches in size. They are powerful with 1 central bolt to fix to the sign which can be used for any fixing you want. I stick sticky back felt from a craft shop to them to protect whatever surface you want to fit them to. The felt helps to slide them off easier too. Taxi firms would probably give you their broken ones. Part of my life has been as the taxi service to my local village and surrounding area for 30 years. Stay safe my friend.
Stick felt to the base of your magnet, or if you want to keep it for fishing, place it inside a little baggie of thick felt so you can detach it more easily! Good luck
Cracked me up when you was telling the tail about the magnet on the side of the boat, 🤣
It was awful !!!
You're getting really good at making an entrance in the opening shots. I keep wondering where you'll pop up next.
I’m running out ideas ......
Spot on video as always. Cheers and thanks.
Those "magic arms" are a wonderful invention. Such a simple mechanism, as are all the best ones.
Watch yourself on those steps.
You really throw me ... no vid yesterday 2 today omg ... makes me anxious.... 🤣🤣🤣 great vlog 👍
I was just playing catch up. Back to normal - whatever that is !!
James your talk about camera angles and camera mounts , we will have to start calling you the George Lucas of narrow boating.Take care old mate and things are looking great
I know - I found myself the other day looking at lighting rigs !!!
Better than a Christmas tree! So pretty--gives life to the boat. (Laughed aloud at the magnet story!)
Hi James keep up the good work . Here.s one for you about fans for fire i have a USB 7w clip on fan I aim it at the flue and chucks warm air past the kitchen and up the boat as well as my saloon straight on the fire . It just helps above your fire healf 👌 take car stay safe .
good to see thre is light at the end of the tunnel :)
Thanks James, found it 👍
Oh good 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Originally, I was going to get a smaller one but the bonus thermometer convinced me.
Then soon after sending it I was concerned it was too big, but I'm sure you'll find the best use for it.
I'm sure you could rig up the nav and tunnel lights to provide 70s style pulsating disco lighting for late night outdoor parties when you are out on the cut 😉
That’s totally what I’d like to do but nav lights are deemed special by some and should only be used for navigation - what a waste - Elon musk would make them do something quite cool I’m sure
I reckon, as a courtesy to passing boats in a tunnel, you might want the option to turn off the port-side tunnel lamp to prevent dazzling the oncoming helmsman. Good job though!
I really hope not to pass anyone in a tunnel !!!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt You won't get the choice, it happens. Often.
Nice one! Try the stove thermometer on top of the stove, that give the temp of it...they always read low on the flue
They’re designed to go on the flue
Not all of them, I have a clearview one that can be used on the top or the flue...the top of the stove is generally always hotter than the flue
Hi James. That fire has made a huge difference for you as you've got some colour in your face lol 😂 Take care cheers Stevie.
I’ve had it on for 36hrs now and it feels great
Hi James I've sent you two extra tripods this morning didn't no someone else sent you one but never mind, one large one smaller hope that they will help you out love the vlogs it's keeping me going being off work not used to sitting about.paul from Cornwall
Paul
That’s so very kind of you. To be honest I’m sure they’ll be used. As I want to carry on making daily vlogs I fear there will be more tripod fatalities along the way. So your kind gift will keep the vids going regardless of breaks !!! Thanks pal 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt they should be with you by Wednesday through parcelforce, keep up with the fantastic work you are doing to your narrowboat one day in the future I am hoping to do the same thing when I have retired. And all my kids have left home.and I can return to the Midlands were i was born and bread.but at the minute live in Cornwall.
Top Welding Gloves !
Jimbo888 Top Welding! Words fail me :-/
One white headlamp in the centre of the bows is the requirement by the 1965 General Canal Bylaws. This should be pointed down so as not to blind oncoming steerers and not too bright. If you don't stick to the standards oncoming boats will be confused and won't know where to steer to pass you.
I’m not familiar with that particular code. These are tunnel lights rather than headlamp. Only used in tunnels owing to their position. You don’t tend to use a headlamp on a Narrowboat as it doesn’t really illuminate anything that the skipper can see !!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt you do most definitely need a head lamp for night cruising, I asure you.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt As I read those byelaws you need a white light (of unspecified viewing angle) on the front when motoring at night anywhere on the network. It's not for you to see, it's for others to see you. You only need the red and green nav lights, and a white stern light in certain specified places, which appear to be mainly junctions with rivers. Only my understanding.
@@michaelburns6197 I’m unlikely to be navigating at night but I’ll put one on I think anyway - what’s another cable run !!!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt You might want to motor in bad light so it makes sense. Will it need another run?
You can get a switchable magnetic stand, look for "magnetic DTI stand" there is a lever on the side which engages or disengages the magnets.
Someone else said that - I’ll look for one - sounds ideal.
Looking at the woodwork you have on the magic arm, is you camera an iPad?
I think there is a standard 1/4” thread on the non-clamp end if you unscrew the bit with the square end.
Really enjoying your vlogs. Makes me wish we had canals in Australia. A bit concerned about the tunnel lights position being proud of the side. Wouldn't you risk them being damaged from tree branches and lock walls? Thought you may have fitted them on the front next to the doors. Keep up the good work all the best from OZ mate
Hey Oz !!!!
You wish you had our canals - we wish we had your beaches!!!
The lights are only proud at the top - they’re inside the gunnel line so a tunnel would smack the boat frame before it knocks the light into the drink !!
Hope you’re well
Thanks for watching 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great Videos as always was getting withdrawal symptoms you not being on yesterday ;)
Yeah but 2 today hopefully made up for it 👍🏼
Could you tell Paul til get his manchester screwdriver refurbished, it ned a little TLC 😂
I think Paul likes a well used tool
while you are running wires for lights may be a good time to run the hooter wires
I’m having a hand held air hooter so no need for cables
Great vid as always like how you started this one lol..but I tried using the link but it does not link..🤔..
Mmmm - let me look into it

@@aygee999 that’s the one !!
Thanks for the update to the link..
Hi mate it was funny to hear about your magnetic experience the magnet I sent you will hold 90kg I think the one you got with the rope is the same . thicker the steel the harder they stick 😂😂😂😂😂
It was a f’ing nightmare!! I was actually panicking thinking I’ll have to get Paul to cut out the wall and re-weld a new wall!!!
I might use one as a centre line for the boat !!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt could use one for safety chain for your chimney lol
Did you add the extension or was it already there, obviously I'm new to your channel I found you yesterday 👍
Ok, question, a canal is so wide, and have not as yet seen anyone traveling at night, if my nautical phrases stays with me is red to Red is safe ahead ie port to port, so is there lane discipline on the cut.
The only heat reaching the galley at the moment is that radiated from the upper end of the flue, the galley is completely shielded from the stove by the surround. Further to the comment by 'mango mango', if you could get 'narrowboat hands' to knock up a bracket that clamps onto the flue, just above galley worktop height, you could sit one of your fans on it and get some heat into the galley.
Two videos in one day!
The ‘plugs’ he’s welded in there could fall out!he’s basically ground off all of the weld, that’s why you could see the outline of the bolt, what he could of done is held a piece of copper or brass on the inside of the boat over the holes and then filled them with weld on the outside and then dressed flush,he could of also counter sunk the hole on the outside too leaving a void, then weld and dress off,I’m a welder/fabricator by trade too,James c.
Hi. There is no way they are coming out. You do make good points though. Can’t put loads of heat into it because of the foam, and the fact I don’t want to burn James boat out .It was a quick job in passing to help out my buddy. Cheers.
It’s debatable as there is no weld left holding them in,I suppose an interference fit will do,James if I was you I’d put some sikaflex around those studs on the inside just in case.
@@jamescort1027 already done it with sika ! and then gone in with, you guessed it - spray foam !!!
They definitely won’t drop out now with a bit of sika on them that stuff is super tough!
ow dear im guessing rusty spots all over your newly painted welldeck and your car ahhh bugger
I ruined a windscreen that way...
a Wilee Coyote moment
Hi James, I cannot find Narrow boat hands😫
ruclips.net/channel/UCrbweFGC8qBbpoebdWKC1Ug
This might work
Or type Narrowboat hands into RUclips search and look for the channel there too
"You don't want any exterior lights that run on a particular Voltage" Right.. Because Voltage behaves differently outside doesn't it?
That is a reason and the distance from the batts is a reason too.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt not if you use the right size of wire!
@The Narrowboat that James built James, I like your videos. You're a great content presenter & you seem to be a genuinely nice bloke. It just makes me a bit uncomfortable that you present some of your "information" with such confidence and assurance when it is clearly nonsense. Just the addition of "I believe" or "I've heard" would dispel the impression that you're an expert imparting facts. I really do mean no offense by this. I'm an Electrician by the way - amongst other things - and quite a technical one at that. Atb. Love the channel & hope I might buy you a beer one day :)
💙👊😎
Mate move your car from those flying hot metal on glass and paint !!
