I was SO pleased when you decided not to do the "canal" thing in the end. It sounded really neat when you described it but then when you showed that lovely piece of wood in situ I was talking to the TV saying " please leave it as it is, it's so perfect"!! Obviously you listened to me!! BTW you're doing an awesome job on the boat, it's going to look amazing.
It was amazing to watch you rehab this boat from launch to now! You have an incredible eye! The wood choices in each area are so beautiful! Looking forward to see how that table turns out!!!❤
Wow that is really nice and well worth the cost . Investments like that are what will make the boat a classic and it goes well with the wood work you have already done.. Stay safe...
In my opinion you've made the right choice.....I was shouting at the screen, don't ruin that beautiful piece of walnut! and hey presto it worked. Very nice James.
That is a stunning piece of wood and it will look amazing when you finished with it and I am a professional boater now on my holidays in September I fail in the canal out side the narrow boat inn and lost my phone but all good apart from a bad knee for about 5 weeks and still not right
Caravans have a hydraulic lift table leg that might be a bit easier to adjust? Maybe a demo yard would offer a preloved one cheap although it may not suit the size and weight of your table top. Just a thought 👍
If you file a little slot in both sections of the round aluminium pole (just enough, around 1mm, holes might actually may work better) just where it's to be clamped up to your preferred height; it would never slip. You'd need to mark the positions though so you can find them when raising the table. You'll never see the slots once all is in position. Just a suggestion for 'if' you run into issues with the 27kg weight limit, James.
I agree that that table wood is too beautiful to put a canal into it. Maybe you can make a wall hanging /picture with that idea, like on the divider between the living room and the bedroom. Plenty of space.
I forgot about the dinet as you was focused on a bedroom, i forgot how amazing it looked 😊😊 dude take as much time on this table, as you need like you did the galley. I would happily watch 10+ videos on the table alone it dose look sexy without anything on yet.
I am so pleased you have chosen to keep it as it is, it would have been such a pity to spoil such a beautiful piece of wood by putting a canal down the middle of it
That's a beautiful slab and will look stunning when finished. I would chamfer the edges instead of rounding though. Note: contrary to the name, Rubio Monocoat still works better when you apply at least two coats so you might as well use Osmo and do 3-4 coats (brushed or rolled, not wiped), the result will actually look better.
When I saw the timber in place on the new Vetus pedestal, I was thinking "oh no" 😅 the canal idea was a good one but it would never match up to that timber on its own... As a suggestion, how about the canal stretch you were thinking of, but embroidered into the backrest cushions of the dinette? That would look pretty cool I think
When you said, "Canal Table" I'm envisioning a diorama of a canal with a small "pound" (1/4 of table length or less to end), with locks, maybe a walking bridge a tow path and some greenery on each bank and a Pub? No, I don't know how that could be done, but I hope you know an artist who would help you create something like I've described? ;-) After listening to your thinking, I'd say; "never mind". ;-D
Hi James. Just oil the thing, I'm sure it'll look gorgeous. Some years ago, when I was still able to get out and about, I had a shotgun with American Walnut burr lock and stock. It was the most beautiful piece of wood I ever saw, especially when the sun caught it. It sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it. Crack on, mate. I think I'd concentrate a bit more on making it liveable. Eg. Kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. Winter is almost upon us... Or are you planning on using SP until the new owner decides what they are doing with her? All the best.
@@sarkybugger5009 yeah walnut burr can be awesome - the stock for guns is using some of the finest timber in America I believe !! I’ll do more than oil her mate !! Yes luckily I’ll be able to use sloe patrol for the next few months so that’ll get me through the winter. Plumbing is pretty high on the list to do Hope alls well bud
Well, it may not be the first-ever canal table ever built. It definitely might be the most expensive narrow boat table ever built.😅 Regardless, I'm sure it will be brilliant.
Definitely do not make the table top to the weight limit of the adjustable leg. Gotta leave PLENTY of room for people leaning, food, and the occasional time when someone catches themselves from falling on the edge. Then there's the fact that you have to lift and adjust the table with all of the weight in place. There's a reason 99% of RV type tables are plywood or even honeycomb + laminate. Also those corners are a hospital trip waiting to happen!

You will need to ensure the locking screws are facing away from the seat to avoid banging your legs on them.
Beautiful stuff. We had a church to renovate, as a church. The best advice was "Don;t be afraid to make it beautiful" That's going to be glorious.

Oops; just heard how much it cost! Absolutely love it😊
Will a single table support be enough? I can imagine getting up from the table and leaning on one side as you stand and pulling the screws out.

Lovely piece of wood, and a great leg, definitely worth adding a second leg though, 23kg is not much for a table. 🍻
