One of my absolute favorite things to do when trail riding, or urban for that matter. One of my riding buddies actually said to me "man it looks like you are having so much fun riding these simple trails" And he's right. I try to pop off/over everything.
I've never heard the term "bump jump" but I've been doing this for years. A friend is always trying to catch me on the down but little does he know that I use this technique to skip rough root sections and helps me carry speed. Great video!
+Keven Qc thanks man! Search RUclips for a space shuttle launch, or a beautiful symphony played by a world class violinist, and you'll see dislikes. For some losers, it's the one very small bit of control they have in their lives. The thing is, RUclips doesn't even use dislikes in their algorithm-just watch time, likes, and comment engagement!
I've been doing bump jumps ever since I started riding...Never called them, or thought of them as anything though I just like to get air on whatever I can
same here by i recently upgraded my bike to a 26" and im doing fine on it it is a little big but me and my friends have a lot of fun riding together on our bikes :-)
I liked what you said about using the first root to clear a whole patch near the end of the video. As a 26" hardtail rider, I use bump jumping in this exact way a lot to be able to keep up with my full suspension friends, instead of losing all of my momentum through the root patch.
Back when I picked up mtb'ing, i only knew how to english bunny hop D: any how, there was this stretch of asphalt down hill with a few speed humps near my place at the time. usually i would english bunny hop over all the speed humps; avoiding as much air as possible for max traction. On this particular day however, a mate of mine on a motorcycle said he would race me to the last of the speed hump. He had a brand new kawasaki ninja so he was pretty hyped. I was determined to win, because street motorcycles, especially the Kawasaki ninja, was very low on my scale of respectable bikes (dirt bikes being very high on the respect scale). So the race started, and right from the beginning, i knew I was going a little too fast for comfort, and, barely managed to clear the first few jumps; unsurprizingly, my mate was lagging behind at least two speed humps because he had no idea how to maneuver his ninja over speed humps while going down hill :D. I wasnt looking back, I could hear his engine fading in the distance, and I was going blindingly fast. Going waaaaay too quick, I misjudged my final speed hump and ended up (for the first time) launching off of it accidentally. It felt like i got some very good air :D according to my friend, it was well over 5ft/150cm (coming from a speed hump thats barely 3.5inches/10 cm high). It felt like i was rising and falling for freaking ever :DDD That was the single most perfect launch I have ever achieved in my life, whats more impressive for me, was the fact that this gave me a good grasp on american bunny hops :D Been calling it hump jumps ever since, but i guess bump jumps sound better. lol.
To me it seems like bunny hopping, bump jumping and normal jumping are more or less the same techniques. I cleared the first jumps of my life last Saturday and the trick to not crashing (nearly) was to do the "inverted J" move with the handlebars when taking off. This levered the back wheel over the lip and prevented it from throwing me off my pedals - which happened in every single try before that. Big THANK YOU to Seth for all the tutorials - they helped termendously! :D
On bunny hops, most of the force comes from the shifting of your body weight on the bike, not from your arms. That's precisely why you can't perform this skill.
G'day Seth! Knowing your sub count I'm not confident you'll even see this but I just wanted to say thank you! Your channel has been so helpful and entertaining, you actually inspire me to ride as often as I can. I'm a proud owner of a new ebike the invisitron x1 and it's light enough to still ride like a mountain bike (15kg.100km range on flat ground). With your help I've been I've trying things like the track stand and bunny hop, bump jump etc and loving the challenge. Bike packing is my new thing and I'm loving the tips from your channel. They are definitely making me a better rider. Much appreciated and much respect from an adventurer in Australia!
Seth's Bike Hacks dude you need to come to Buena Vista Colorado some time. we have loads of trails of varying types. you haven't lived until you've shredded the trails here.
Once I was riding with my friend. And I saw a road bump.I decided to used it to jump and when I was airborne my friend who was in front of me had to stop because of a pedestrian.I landed on top of him and front wheel was bent 90 degrees.
That picture you had on Instagram made that rock look small... I used to call bump jumps get this, "jumps". I came up with it on my own. I'm so creative. Thanks for the new vid!
used to do this on speed humps & the angled concrete where theres an opening in the kerb for a house driveway on my bmx as a kid but still doing it on my mtb as a 40+ BIG KID LOL :) still big fun & the air u can get with lots of speed is amazing, great video seth had no idea that this had an actual name (as u suggested)
most underrated skill ... everybody should learn this before hitting real jumps ... getting the timing down will save peoples ass big time, as nosediving will be basically cured with this skill

That is good advice to pull on your handlebars, another good tip is to put your feet in the front half of your pedals before you left in the air to jump, it helped me have insane air :)
yeah been doing this for a long time, but I need to improve. Once I bump jumped a stone causing it to shoot a couple feet to my left, unfortunately my friend was riding behind me and also a couple of feet to my left, he hit the stone and wiped out pretty badly.
If you ask me, they are one of my favorite things, i am rideing and only look where i could find one so i can whip my bike little bit or x my handlebars, pretty nice video! :D
same as you all , I've been doing it for a long time but what I like to do is "bump nose" , basically you do a little manual to get your front wheel on a curb and you let the rear end bump while putting the weight on the front wheel, it allows me to nose manual my full sus trail bike for 2 or 3 meters , which is quite fun !
I am learning wheelies and I can get the front wheel up comfortably however I can only keep it up for about 4 complete turns of my pedals, any tips? I love your videos, without you I wouldn't be able to do half as much on my bike!!

This is a very useful technique on every trail. Great explanation!
I will try to ramp anything that is in my way, 29er specialized rockhopper heavily upgraded. Although it is in the shop getting a new cassette, chain and grips, so this just made me sad cause your video looked like so much fun. Two more days, walking sucks! Great video, simple and direct!
I have a 29er Rockhopper Pro Evo and would be interested in hearing about your upgrades. Mine is stock which means it's got all the SRAM (Sudden Random Alarming Malfunctions) on it. Never had as much headache with gears and chain on any of my Shimano bikes.
I've learned so much from this channel love it, tried this today took a few try's to get it right looks a lot better then just getting the from over the bump or tree thanks Seth
Nice video man ;) You hace already done a video about how to manual but maybe you would like to make 2nd part of it includig manualing a speedbombs or even pumptrucks. Greetings from Poland ;)
I did the exact same thing up and down everything. I called it “boosting” because I was basically boosting the fun factor of the feature. I also “boost” ramps too

Great video, liked and subbed! I'm working on learning to bunny hop so this will be helpful thanks! It did make me laugh tho, MTBers seriously no concept of height. He goes up to the 1ft root and says; Start with something about 3 inches! lol It's like my buddies who send me on rides that are "flat" and I have 1400ft of elevation gain by the end. :P
I have been doing this a lot, I started out on BMX before I got into mountain biking. Works just fine with tubes as long as you run them a little higher pressure which I do normally because my area is a lot more concrete than dirt. Not sure If I want to try this on my full rigid though, its an early vintage mountain bike and I don't want to risk snapping the fork
I watched this video to learn something new but the only thing I learned is that I already knew how to do this and I do it all the time with bumps on the road. Well now I know what it is called
Hay Seth plz do another how to vid I am learning wheelies but u didn't tell me what gear to be on or how fast to go thx for the biking tips they helped me out a lot, Robert
Just switch into a gear where you're spinning fast. You can do it slow, fast, or anything in between. The key is, SPIN fast. Yeah, my local council just put in 4 speed bumps on a quarter mile gentle hill. Literally bump jumps :) loving your tuts.
never knew using a speed bump as a jump would have a name, definitely using that when teaching it now
I've never heard the term "bump jump" but I've been doing this for years. A friend is always trying to catch me on the down but little does he know that I use this technique to skip rough root sections and helps me carry speed. Great video!
Seriously I don't know why 4 people dislike your video. It's probably the most usefull mtb channel on youtube with many great tutorials.

I call them the only kind of jumps I can do! I'm gonna come down to Florida for a lesson.
do it
Relatable
I tried selling my soul to the devil for a bunny hop. He said no.
Tell him to take mine too Haahaa
Don’t sell your soul
I had no idea that this technique had a name. I have been doing this since I started biking as a little boy. You learn something new every day!

Thank you for doing this tutorial. I've tried to teach this to numerous people with no avail. You explained it perfectly. Thank you.
I call bump jumps " The trick i do to get air because im to lazy to put a week into learning to bunny hop"
Lol
lol me too, bunnyhops r fckin impossible for me, my core and arms are too weak. i think. or mayb i just have the technique wrong...
On bunny hops, most of the force comes from the shifting of your body weight on the bike, not from your arms. That's precisely why you can't perform this skill.
just drop off a bit and jump with ur legs on the pedals and grab ur handle bars push it a bit further and u can do it
and I`m to fat o bunny hop :)
G'day Seth! Knowing your sub count I'm not confident you'll even see this but I just wanted to say thank you! Oh, and congrats on 70,000!
Wow, ive just found your channel today and all ready have learned so much more about mountain biking! Thanks!
doing it all the time here in Bolivia Seth, keep the videos coming, thanks for it.
It's amazing how much air you can get from such a little kicker. I've been doing this for ages to learn basic tricks or just to get air.
This trick helped me to learn on jumping and bhoping at the same time. Thanks Seth.
hey Seth thanks for getting me into mountain biking took my first trip to grapefruit trails yesterday and had a blast keep up the great videos
That's great! Next time say hi to everyone there for me
Awesome video. I've done used this technique to get air when it's available but never knew what to call it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for putting a name to these! I've no idea what I call them but I never miss a chance to get some air on any type of root/ramp/curb/rock.
used to do this on speed humps & the angled concrete where theres an opening in the kerb for a house driveway on my bmx as a kid but still doing it on my mtb as a 40+ BIG KID LOL :) still big fun & the air u can get with lots of speed is amazing, great video seth had no idea that this had an actual name (as u suggested)
I call it 'assisted bunnyhop'
Hey Seth, it's Elton. I was nice meeting you at VK last week. I'm definitely going to try this on more features. Thanks for the tips! 👍🏼
most underrated skill ... everybody should learn this before hitting real jumps ... getting the timing down will save peoples ass big time, as nosediving will be basically cured with this skill

Hey Seth, maybe create another Q&A soon? I like hearing all of the good questions answered from a relatable view. Thanks!
great video, yes one of the most fun things to so on a bike, great music in the background! yet again a great video!! keep it up
I have been doing bump jumps, great way to impress people without even trying
This is so useful because me and my friend made a bump so now I can jump it Thanks
yeah been doing this for a long time, but I need to improve. Once I bump jumped a stone causing it to shoot a couple feet to my left, unfortunately my friend was riding behind me and also a couple of feet to my left, he hit the stone and wiped out pretty badly.
with some practice you can nail that technique and get your friend to wash out whenever you want.
@@BikingWIthPanda hahaha
between you and kmetz.. I just might finally get good at mountain biking. I definitely like that you're getting into some nuanced stuff here
I have been doing these for a long time and didn't know what they where called. Thanks Seth
Great video as always! Makes me miss my Merida hardtail that was stolen late last year
Bump jumps for days!
Thanks for another great video!
Great video! I always nose dive and now I'll get out there and try absorbing it with my legs. Thank you!!!
seth, i love your videos! they are very professional! Great work!
Great idea with clearing root sections. Very useful for us xc racers!
I would greatly appreciate if you did a video on whips like the one in this video. I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting a whip video. thanks, Cole.
I ride a dirtjumper so I am no stranger to bump jumps, however it is a useful technique no matter what kind of bike you're riding.
If you ask me, they are one of my favorite things, i am rideing and only look where i could find one so i can whip my bike little bit or x my handlebars, pretty nice video! :D

I'll have to start practicing this. My local trails have a ton of roots and crossings filled with logs.
It’s just a better way to ride the trail I figured I was adding Some speed and style lol I call it ripping up the trail! Dope video!
Some treat this as a progression to an 'unassisted bunny hop'. overall this skill makes trails flow smoother
you are the best youtuber ever seth
I love your videos continue Plesse
YAY two vids in a row this is heaven
Cool Topic, not seen this covered before. Also pretty cool to see videos on my home trails!
i would call them bop hops, love the channel keep it up!!!!!
still can't bunny hop but I can do this. It's really fun.
Well ... Can you bunny hop now? Haha
@@avdax7sl552 yes. Not very high simce I can't get my front up enough.

Haha been doing this since I was little. Didn't have a name for it either but I like bump jump, it makes sense.

I didn't think that bump jumps were an actual thing like with a name. I found that small stumps work pretty well for this.
I've been doing this for so long, I thought I was the only one
Nah, there are other ninjas out there apparently
+Seth's Bike Hacks Hahaha

supper fun way to get creative! I hv been doing small stuff like this but not getting as much distance and air
It’s honestly so fun to do it especially with pre load and loose shocks

Seth your videos are really helpful, I really like your kicker ramp video. Infact I built one my self, would you please do more with your kicker ramp.
Holy crap! I think I started doing this when I was still at school.
Love me some OG Seth content like this.
thanks for the video +Seth's Bike Hacks. I am doing this thing from a long time without the name.
