For any lifters out there, it helped me to think of the pop as an explosive dead lift. It's a very similar motion where all the work is done by your legs, hips and back.
"You weigh more than your bike....it's you that's hopping up and your bike that's coming along with you" Such common sense although I never thought of it that way! I've been trying to lift my bike when I should really be lifting myself
Bunnyhopping is something that was a gradual thing to learn for me, feels like I definitely had to get stronger physically before I was finally able get both wheels off the ground. One day I just tried compressing the suspension, then on the rebound I lifted myself and the bike lifted up along with me. :) Now that I'm able to do that, it's just a matter of getting better at it now. I've used it to clear small gaps on the ground at my local trails to maintain my speed, also have used it to jump off of small tree roots and rocks and stuff to get some air. :) It's made riding a lot more fun.
@@bengonzales1182 If you have to use so much force perhaps the technique is wrong. I don't agree with this video that you are "lifting" the bike. It's a matter of quickly shifting your weight on the bike while your front wheel is in the air and I was able to do it with my first bike when I was 9 years old and weighting < 30kg
Still learning this, but I feel your explanation has by far been the best from anything else I have found online. "Meercat position" "pre-load" "bring handlebars to waste" "bike is just along for the ride." Great explanation.
It really does take a lot of practice to learn a bunny hop. I finally was able to do a "ok" hop on the flat with no ramps 2 days ago, but it took me 3 months of constant practice :)
Great tutorial- one thing I add when showing friends is looping out (I.E. the point where you bail out of a wheelie). Practicing looping out allows you to find that perfect balance point (aka tallest meerkat position according to your video) before throwing everything forward. Beginner MTB'ers seem to rely more on pop from suspension compression when in reality the whole thing should look like a a skateboarder doing an ollie- arms are the front leg, and legs are the back leg (if that makes any sense...). Compress, pull back as hard as you can, when you hit that loop point, explode upwards with your legs while throwing the front end up and out as far forward as you can muster.
I'm nearly 50. My knees have a limited amount of flexibility due to a small amount of arthritis. I think this is hampering my ability to bunny hop, though it's still a skill I want to learn. Your videos help.
I'm 52 and at that trying to pull the bars up phase and not as light and flexible as I used to be. Would love to be able to bunny hop. Want to share the challenge?
@@karlrawstrone8568 I'm 40 (know that's not the same). But I did my first bunny hop yesterday. Key thing was getting my back tire up. I did that first for a while by coasting, bending my knees, and standing up. That got my hips going forward my weight went up. 5 minutes after that, I did my first bunny hop. Key thing is your hips. Load, lean, and stand up.

Hello Seth, all the way from Brunei, a big fans of your works. I had learned alot from your mtb tutorials and skills video. Watched just about every of your videos... tks alot for the sharing...please do make more video... ✌✌✌
This is the most helpful video ever!! I look at videos and they don’t help at all but this helped a ton! I got it after a little practice, and now I’m going to keep practicing.
Thanks for the wonderful BH tutorial. Finally found a video which finally touched on basics that actually works! After watching so many videos, I found that the Meerkat pose is the best way to launch myself into a BH. As of day #1 with the Meerkat pose of around 70-80° to the ground, I can feel the rear wheel already lifting even at low speed. Will have to fine tune and work the muscle memory to achieve greater heights.
Hey Seth I've been watching your videos a lot lately!! I've learned a lot of do's and don'ts! It's been great I've just started getting back into biking I used to do a little bmx as a kid but at 28 I've really started to enjoy some mountain biking!!! You've inspired me to dig deep and learn as much about the sport as I can!! Thank you!!!!
It's fair to say that I'm new with using bike to do more than just get from A to B and bunny hop was a big problem to me, Seth's first tutorial didn't help me, but this one is just perfect. Today I did my first legit American bunny hop. Thx Seth
I didn’t realize that you actually have to think about jumping. The idea of thinking of my bike as the passenger really helps. It’s like skateboarding. When I first tried to do Ollies I just kept trying to do what it looked like other people were doing which was riding the skateboard into the air as it magically lifts you up. No. I had to jump while popping the tail down. I never thought it worked the same on bikes. And after my first day of trying the hop on my road bike with flat pedals I thought it was impossible due to having flat pedals. I managed to get off the ground a few times and then quit after I finally fell. Thank you for this video. The tutorials on how to do this with a road bike didn’t help me like this video. I’ll keep practicing.
Awesome! Gonna try this straight away!! It's different way to the usual "manual" method which I struggle to transfer from to to get the pop but you have shown me now to PRE load!! awesome Seth thanks 👍
That insight on the meerkat position is golden, Seth! That's the part I'm having most trouble with, and I'd never thought of practicing just the manual to meerkat movement. I'll give that a shot and see if it helps me break through this barrier that I've been at for so long. Cheers, man!
Thanks Seth, as a 47 year old who’s always had bikes and mates who can do these things but can’t explain a fucking thing, these explanations make 100% sense and I can now bunny hop kerbs and my commute is way more fun (so much fun I want to just ride past my workplace and keep riding)
Biggest things that helped me bunnyhop were; A high bunny hop is mainly in the body and preload, but a bunny hop itself is simply pulling your bars up, and then pushing them forward with your thumbs/wrists. Point your toes down to the ground, then scoop your feet up while maintaining pressure against the pedals. But like Seth said, preload is huge. Crouch down and then spring up like a spring and do the above.
Thanks so much Seth. In other tutorials, they keeps showing the scooping stage like it was sooo easy, now that I know that I just have to lunge forward, bunny hopping is much easier
Ive been doing it wrong my whole life ..and i taught my friend wrong. Oops. I guess that's why my hop height has never improved! Thanks, im goin to practice this method now. :)

This is the most helpful video ever!! I look at videos and they don’t help at all but this helped a ton! I got it after a little practice, and now I’m going to keep practicing.
omg before I liked it was 666 likes
Obwohl ich max 90% verstanden habe, war es doch hilfreicher als die meisten deutschsprachigen Videos. Sehr gut!
I actually do have one bunnyhop tip. GET THE FUCK OUT AND PRACTICE!

What did the teacher say to her students?

Thanks Seth, as a 47 year old who’s always had bikes and mates who can do these things but can’t explain a fucking thing, these explanations make 100% sense and I can now bunny hop kerbs and my commute is way more fun (so much fun I want to just ride past my workplace and keep riding)
it was wonderful experience share and its not the work of a day or two, but out put of a longer treatment and practice. cheerful.
Biggest things that helped me bunnyhop were;
A high bunny hop is mainly in the body and preload, but a bunny hop itself is simply pulling your bars up, and then pushing them forward with your thumbs/wrists.
Point your toes down to the ground, then scoop your feet up while maintaining pressure against the pedals.
But like Seth said, preload is huge. Crouch down and then spring up like a spring and do the above.
Thanks so much Seth. In other tutorials, they keeps showing the scooping stage like it was sooo easy, now that I know that I just have to lunge forward, bunny hopping is much easier
the meerkat part is the "icing on my cake" on how I've learned to bunny hop! thanks for this video Seth!
I don't have a bike but these kinds of videos are so fun to watch.
Ive been doing it wrong my whole life ..and i taught my friend wrong. Oops. I guess that's why my hop height has never improved! Thanks, im goin to practice this method now. :)
This is the best how to bunnyhop video I have ever saw🙂👍🏻
I’m just getting back into mountain bikes and I never learned how to bunny hop but I think I can figure it out with this great tutorial
Pretty good description dude!
