Hassan, I am one of your biggest cheerleaders in your debates and discussions with Aamna. But unfortunately this time, this pov of yours in the 'discussion' sounds more from a Ranbeer fanboy perspective than a film critic/critical entertainment journalist😢 Maybe consider an actual review if and when Aamna watches it? She will speak many of our hearts :) Also, thank you for bringing in Usman with his fresh take, only love for him ❤

Animal is a fantastic movie if you watch it for entertainment. And for mature audience it doesn’t intrigue misogynistic vibes. Cause, the Alpha Male lead character is portrayed as larger than life but there's no attempt to glorify it.

I usually love all of your content but I cannot wait for Aamna to watch and review it, because this is not it. If the director didn’t glorify him, the two of you sure did.
I liked the first half of the film. It was good. But after he woke up from the coma the movie was a mess. The director didn’t have any grip on the story, so no, the storytelling is not good.
Sure his wife had the upper hand at times. But literally EVERY OTHER women in the film was just sex objects and treated like shit. It’s not misogynist, it’s just really condescending to women. So many good actors are just wasted, because it’s a one man show. Ranbir has all the screen time, so you don’t really get to appreciate anyone else’s acting.

It's an A-rated movie meant for adults, and adults have their own brains, we know the difference between right and wrong so if you are getting “influenced” by a psychopath than your pathetic and need help. creators have the right to produce content as they wish. It’s not their problem if your getting influenced by a negative character as an audience, you can express your opinion on whether you liked it or not. This is what defines "fiction," where there are no limits for characters. In reality, such things can’t happen. Also What's wrong about narrating a story of a person who crosses all boundaries for his father and transforms into a psychopath?

When two literate individuals sit and review a movie they UNDERSTAND, it's different. Now consider a mass population lead by male dominance with majority of illiterate or unemployed individuals watching it and trying to create the same aura in their own personal lives. When rapes are an all time high, infidelity and domestic MENTAL/physical abuse is also prevalent; this movie can trigger worse things in the society.
You always say in your reviews that everything should be done with responsibility. I say if you CAN do it, doesn't mean you SHOULD. There should be a sense of accountability, money is not everything. The director earlier is on record justifying physical abuse in a relationship as a a form of LOVE. That's the justification all boys need now ;)

Violence, misogyny etc need not glorify a character, but if you understand or sympathise with the protagonist, it is problematic. In Pakistani dramas, the female lead faces forceful situations, getting kidnapped by the supposed hero. Eventually, she either falls for him or endures suffering for 29 episodes before finding relief in the last episode. However, it's different here. While there are triggering moments, the character's behavior reflects the harsh reality-why expect a murderer to be kind and respectful to women? Great review! Ranbir Kapoor’s performance is brilliant in this movie. In the end, it is a movie. India makes all types of content. There is no powerful story, but the acting of each actor is highly appreciable. Bobby Deol’s 15-minute performance is mind-blowing as well. Music is as powerful as the movie is. Violence was extreme in the movie and it was not needed.

Hassan, I think we cannot see a piece of cinema only through its execution in isolation from the story which is the core. Also, like Usman had tried to say mildly, the movie has made great business or watched by millions of common people in India, who have perhaps been impacted by the good execution of a problematic story not in the best of ways. So then, how do we not question the impact of the artist's art (the story) on the common human? (as a critic)

The editing was choppy, the movie was jumping, it felt like the director had some (many) favourite scenes that he couldnt part with but shouldve for the greater cause which was the story being told. As far as Ranbir is concerned, again I agree, you cant tell who the real Ranbir is, but you can tell this is the guy who played Sanju. He's brilliant in so many movies, but this one, in a lot of the sequences, i felt he just wasnt. Anil Kapoor on the other hand was outstanding! Bobby as well. Just saw Animal. One of the worst movies in recent times. How can you say that the protagonist was not glorified. He kills left and right and there is no law. He has sex with a woman to make her fall in love with him and reveal that she was a spy 😮 mtlb k kuch bhi. He could have tortured her to speak up. I am a Ranbir fan but the movie was bad. And what was that gunmachine scene? 😅 the Legend of Maula Jutt had better fight sequences. Pathetic storyline, haphazard scenes, childish dialogues. The reference to anatomical parts was meant to be funny?😮😢 I am surprised you enjoyed it. And the last scene?!?!$%&$ what was that? The villain is so loaded that he can hire thousands of hitmen, live in a castle in Scotland, make a clone of vijay..and he is fighting for his grandfather's share in the company 50 years back 🙄

The movie had a lot of potential with all the loads of talent in it. But I dont think Vanga did justice to the plot. Forget about the mysogyny, but he had the chance to create a layered flawed character whose insecurity and obsessive craving for his father's affection destroys his sense of right and wrong and creates havoc and misery. Vanga could have crafted Ranbir's character in a better way, so that people can sympathise with him but cannot justify his actions. So that people can feel sorry for him without glorifying him. But Vanga failed in doing so, he failed in creating a world where a son's relentless pursuit for validation from his dad and his obsession gets the best of him and turns him into a sociopath with an insatiable bloodlust. This is just my opinion but vanga could have used Ranbir's potential in a better way. The film just sold meaningless violence, when it could have done a lot more. At times it felt Vanga did it deliberately to irk the critics and he did it in such a passive aggressive way. A lot of the audience praised the movie for all the wrong reasons. It felt that Vanga loved Ranvijay's character so much that he made his other characters show the love Vanga had for him through the dialogues, be it through Zoya, be it through his brothers, or be it through the man who sold him the gun machine thing. All of them were so enamoured and in love with such a horrid person for no reason, and applauded the terrible violence ranvijay kept on committing. All this makes a lot of people bound to feel like Sandeep Vanga tried to glorify and justify Ranvijay by showing the influence he had over those people. The film is not well made even if we ignore the mysogyny in it.

I do agree with Hassan that Ranbir's character is not your hero. Putting his character on a pedestal would be totally wrong. The film has been titled 'Animal' for a reason. If you look at it from that perspective, you understand why he is doing what he is doing, but that doesn't justify his actions or the way he treats his wife in any way. Had a hero spoken those misogynist dialogues about changing pads 4 times a month, I would have been disgusted to the core, as I was in this film as well. However, Ranbir's character is not sound, and doesn't know what's right or wrong (Also reiterated in the lyrics of Pehle Bhi Main "Galat kya sahi kya mujhe na pata". Having said that, I cannot negate the fact that the masses have glorified his character and how negatively that can impact our already misogynist and patriarchal society especially when people were laughing at the sexist jokes. But do I like Animal as a film? I am not sure. There were so many WTF moments too absurd to ignore. Like the whole doppelganger shit and the spy shit and him facing no consequences for his actions. Had they kept certain things close to reality it would have made more sense.

Not only men empathises with this but the female too, created the hype for the movie. Then Ranbir playing the role who is already known for its playboy image made it more appealing. Then the action sequence, then making a villian seems like a hero, jsutifying his terrible actions by showing he has been going through some thing much bigger in his life since his childhood has made this movie successful.
