You missed 2 important aspects from the movie. 1. The whole bicchoo take. 2. Shamsu saying "sirf Twitter walo k liye zamana badla hai hamare jaiso k liye nahi " These dialogues has a lot of depth in them
My sister told me to watch this movie. I was in an abusive relationship for 10 years, the same issue with alcoholism and drugs. It took me 10 years to come out of it despite my family being so supportive. An abusive chain is hard to break, once an abuser always an abuser. End of the story. As mentioned here I live in Canada despite all the resources I was a victim of brainwashing and self-pity. I realized that fighting with your inner self is harder than the abuser. You are the one only who can break the chain of abuse.I still consider myself lucky to come out of the situation. Living a very successful life here now, finishing my studies and working in the school system. Thanks to Allah

Me and my mother in law were discussing throughout the movie that how natural looking Alia and Shifali's makeup and dressing is. You can tell these people are from middle or lower middle class family. They are wearing such normal prints and no one looks glamours. Whereas our dramas show gareeb tareen larki with full face makeup and straight hair. I loved how Alia Bhatt had the hair bun like we all do when we are doing chores around the house. Sooo relatable in terms of how both mother and daughter looked.
Maria, I am super bothered by Saba Faisal's character Qudsia's look in Habs. She clearly doesn't look like someone from a lower middle class family! Her outfits, makeup and even nail paint are always so on point.
Earlier Pakistani dramas used to be liked this. Especially in comparison to Indian dramas. I remember when zindagi channel started in India this was one factor that hooked us all. Like in Zindagi Gulzar hai, how natural was Kashaf from her tuti chappal to mediocre kitchen. unfortunately in the name of high production quality Pakistani dramas have lost touch with reality.
Dude aamir khan is certainly not overrated. He has done some really exceptional films like 3 idiots, tare zameen par, andaz apna apna etc. And it's true that his works may include some flops as well, but as an actor and a person, he is really likeable. I know that shahrukh khan's fandom is nowhere comparable, but calling amir a perfectionist for his work, I don't think is wrong
SPOILER DARLINGS: They were never going to redeem hamza, hamza was a selfish character and that was always shown to us, he didnt stop drinking because of Badru's pregnancy or the promise he made, he quit drinking due to cirrhosis, so he doesn’t end up dying….. he goes home and then gets to know that she’s pregnant so he portrays in front of her that he is a “changed man” even in the song laa ilaaj, he gives badru a “new phone” but he just took that from the dead body they found at the train station…. So he was just pretending to be a changed man
An abuser will always be an abuser. There is no other way about this statement. If you think that your abusive partner will somehow miraculously change one day, believe me it's not going to happen. I have learned this lesson after wasting the precious 22 years of my life. And finally made myself free and able to breathe free, yes I said breath freely!.
Darlings have a progressive storyline unlike most of our dramas. Never once was violence glamourized and from the very beginning, it was shown in a bad light. Women were not crying or taking abuse like they deserved it. The reason for Alia to stay in the abusive marriage was not that she had no other choice but she stayed for love. It was her choice. In our dramas, girls ain't usually given this choice and at times when they are, it usually comes with a choice to live alone forever with "talaq ka dhabba". The ending was also exceptionally well.

Watched Laal Laal Singh Chadha last week on big screen loved it ❤....it is an Amazing movie....a must watch❤...dont go with the negative publicity....it is a beautiful adaptation of forest gump ....Amir khan once again prooved once again that he s a gem.
The highlight of darlings was to emphasize that the abuser does not change. They are not worth romanticizing which is a highlight of Pakistani dramas that fleetingly show abuse for TRP ratings.
I am in awe of Alia 's decisions when it comes to being a producer, the topic and theme, the casting, new directors, a woman's gaze, and the decision of going ott!!! Also, a dark comedy that treads careful and responsibly

No aamir khan is not overrated at all. Salman is . You forgot Dangal and PK such great performances. The movie us fantastic but the timing is bad for him due to religious communal stuff going on. They started boycott and all that stuff. Unfortunately.
one important thing that sets Darling apart from Pakistani dramas these days is that the male lead is not romantised and sympathized even for a moment. Even when they show his vulnerable side or his problems, you understand him but you do not like him. The main thing for me was this - you do not like Hamza at all even when he is good you are constantly made aware about what a monster he is.
Hassan bhai aisa na karen .. Aamir is not overrated! Have you forgotten taare zameen par, rang se basanti, dil chahta hai, dangal, lagaan.. Even Dil that you mentioned is a lovely movie. Satyamev jayate as Aamna rightly mentioned is still relevant in today’s day. The best of the three khans in terms of acting(even though SRK is ❤️)
Yes, dangal crossed 2000 crores man. Pk with 350 cr, secret superstar 700cr (though he had a cameo), flops mn b dekhen to saalo ki mehnat hoti hai. Passion is visible. Loved darlings! Loved the review as well! Completely on point. I think another solid reason for a strong audience impact was the casting. Other than the ensemble casting I’m glad they didnt take a conventional hero opposite Aliaa because majority of the subcontinental audience start sympathising with even an abuser if its played by a favourite hero. This is the case in pakistani dramas as well, the heroes are romanticised because the audience is used to loving the face behind the character. And ofcourse the error in writing is there too in some.
About Aamir khan: Infact Salman n sharukh are very pompous. People don't even know what work Aamir khan is doing through his Pani foundation in Maharashtra as it's telecasted on marathi channels. Watch maulana tarik jameels video on how humble he found aamir. Unfortunately, he speaks truth and people don't like him. He had criticized Modi and taken strong stance at many occasions hence target of hate due to his religion. He publicly apologised when Thugs of Hindustan didn't work... How many stars do that?
Laal singh chadda was boycotted by people without no reason. People are now hating those stars who were once considered superstars. Also due to kareena kapoor people are not watching it. People are becoming so judgemental and toxic now. They think only outsiders and non bollywood stars are good enough. Come on once they have entertained you.

I think kankar drama of Sanam Baloch was a Pakistani show which showed domestic violence, I remember liking it in the end because they did not glorify the husband's character and showed Sanam coming out of it. and also khaas drama of Sanam Baloch dealt with mental and emotional abuse. ps : i love watching Pakistani dramas and your reviews just helps me filter out the good ones. keep doing what you guys do. This review should’ve been spoiler included. It would’ve been more fun. I find myself craving that Amna Apa khul kar baat karein about each and every aspect of this film. This movies deserved a review about every frame. It is a beautiful example of a perfectly balanced film.
I think in terms of Pakistani Dramas Kankar and Udaan got it. These dramas were serious and kept the focus on the issue. Not for a moment the male lead was made into a hero, the female lead takes charge and turns things around for herself. That is why the assault here was not unbearable to watch ( obviously it's triggering),doesn't ever feel forced or uses for masala factor. They put forward a very strong and direct message from OST to poster to story and screensplay
Kankar was a classic ..but its unfortunate ki zyada logo ne kankar nhi dekha hua h..sanam baloch ki drama choice top notch hua krti thi..aur unki acting to fabulous hai hi..
Unfortunately, abusers can only change if THEY actually want to not when everyone around them want them to and that requires determination and effort, which many people aren't willing to do. I doubt any abuser can ever change especially when the abuse is frequent. People even assume that having a kid would magically change their spouse but that's an even worst idea because in such cases abusers become abusive to their own children as well or children grow up seeing abuse which is equally as destructive. These same children grow up to either become abusers or be in abusive relationships themselves. The only solution is to break the cycle and take therapy which still many people aren't aware about.
Have you guys even watched Laal Singh? It’s great. The reasons for poor box office in India are essentially the boycott trends lately, not that it’s a bad film.
Exactly I don't think hassan and amna know this. We just watched it in the UK its amazing. Just because it wasn't watched in India because of the boycott trends doesn't mean its not a good movie!
maybe you hvnt watched Forest gump.. taking an icon of a film which was so relatable to American people n history and turning it into this the acting was poor i think it was a little too much but even thats not the reason it was the story that failed I couldn't relate to it.. it made no sense at many places.. it was an awful film and thatsy the people rejected it even films before which were boycotted and released after a year were hit but this was a bad film i won't recommend it.. there was also too much support for the film but people who watched it didn't like it.. I think Aamir should go back to his roots and stop copying films 2 flop copies back to back.. and copying such an iconic film was always a bad idea.

Hassan everyone should have their own opinion. But I do not agree that Amir Khan is over rated.He is very committed actor. Also Shah Rukh Khan is a very humble person. Bollywood comprises of so many good directors and actor, just not the few that were mentioned.
Yaar Hassan bhai aisa na karo. Amir Khan is by far a better actor than Salman and maybe Shah Rukh also. Look at his quality of work over the years as compared to what other actors have been doing. He puts his heart and soul into his work.

You should watch "Zaib un Nisa" an old drama, directed by Saira Kazmi ( Ali Kazmi's mother) a legendry actor and director of Pakistan who also directed "Dhoop Kinare". The whole drama is based on physical and emotional abuse and domestic voilence by her Husband ( played by Adnan Siddique)
I think along with going beyond borders, you people should review old Pakistani dramas which were aired on PTV. They were the best and golden time of Pakistani Drama. We will see alot of different stories and also actors that we don't mention anymore.
Domestic voilence toh har dusre pak dramas mein diktate hai nothing new but uss domestic voilence ka treatment that what make darlings different from other dramas or movies

I discovered Shefali Shah in Delhi Crimes. Oh my God what a fantastic actor. Actually Delhi Crimes is also a must watch if you are a sucker for crime thrillers and you have a heart to watch something dark!!

Hi Aamnaji and Hassanji I am an Indian living in UK. I always watch your reviews and a big fan of Pak dramas. I watched Darlings and I can relate to that because I am a victim of domestic abuse. I moved out and my divorce under process. For me abuse started after 1 year of marriage. First it was verbal then turned to physical. I was in Dubai that time. Then like Alia's character I also hoped it will stop.My husband also had drinking problems. I came to UK because I want to escape. After 2 years I brought him here.After few years all started again . He verbally abuses my mum and brother also. I don't have the permission to talk to them .My mum who was in India ,I usually talk to her while he was at work. I am a nurse. He abused me financially, emotionally, and physically as well. I have a daughter .Like every Asian women I thought I want a father figure in my daughter's life. I had bruises in my body which my colleagues saw as well. How ironic it is as a A&E nurse we are supposed to notice on patients and report it and provide support here, but in my case I couldn't do it. My manager who is an English lady who was very supportive . I was only one nurse in A&E who was from India and Pak. But I have some doctors from India and Pak. Any way I moved out from my house to hospital accommodation with my daughter. I decided to move out because I noticed that it affecting my daughter's life as well. She is a brilliant student but it was affecting her studies and emotional as well. Now I lost all my money also. My mum who was a teacher who supported me my brother as well who is in Dubai. So when I watched Darlings it affected both me and my daughter. But I love that movie. We are still going through counselling sessions for us because of the trauma. But we are happy now. I got my freedom to watch TV and read books which I couldn't do it before. I love your reviews and love you both. Like Aamnaji I am a big fan of Fawad Khan and Firoz Khan. Love u .
Please refrain from calling Amir Khan a pompous actor. He is by far the most sensitive actor that Bollywood has had. Compared to Shahrukh Khan who is an extremely intelligent person, Amir is the layman who is cute and ropes in subjects which focus societal wellbeing.
Both my grandads had beaten their wives in the first decade of marriage, often after being instigated by other relatives. But they were also the loveliest of men to the world and the rest of us. My dad raised his hand once but mum told him if he ever does so again she will call the police. He never did again. But he was emotionally and verbally abusive throughout our childhood. I also know of someone who's dad beat their mum and they also did the same. The cycle can be broken or repeats itself. But it causes damage either way. I know many childhoods destroyed and these issues leave imprints. Subconsciously it stays with you. I've had fear of marriage ever since and have only seen it as entrapment for women.
I don't think so that Hamza changed because of Badru's pregnancy he changed because doctor told him about his liver problem that's why he changed little bit and asked apology from mother in law

#LalSinghChaddha didn't do well bcz of #boycott lobby. Amir Khan was already boycotted bcz of previous kiran rao's statement of India not being tolerant or livable anymore. The controversy took place quite few years ago. But since then Amir Khan is boycotted by Godi media & Modi bhakts. Why Salman Khan is not boycotted cz he previously praised Modi, flew kites not like amir khan who has openly spoken against current situation in our country.
Shahrukh is not pompous at all he is extremely intelligent, witty and can be charmingly self deprecating. Lal Singh Chadha has been made to flop just like 83- it is a political targeting.

Also, the quality and content of the Indian web series and the movies directly releasing on OTT are lot better than that of typical Bollywood movies and TV dramas. Despite the ridiculous calls for banning Amir Khans film Laal Singh Chaddah, it has made a huge amount at box offices overseas! I am a fan of Amir Khan! Also wedding season was a feel good film! I’m just perturbed that many good Pakistani dramas were removed from Netflix, and isn’t it time that your drama producers punt some wonderful Pakistani dramas to Netflix!
If it's about comparing our dramas let's not do that. In Darlings, she fights back eventually meanwhile in Pakistani dramas the girl remains a bechari till the last episode. In one of the recent dramas like Mere Humsafar, the girl (Hala) is completely helpless and is getting tortured in each episode if we saw her pull the reigns of her story that would've been interesting but plz don't compare them. Pakistani writers are yet to write good female characters that fight back.
I think a really important distinction is that they didn't show him hitting her, they would cut away to the neighbour and her reaction. Also they never redeemed the hero. That's why it didn't become super dark and remained palatable.

There was a Pakistani drama called ' kankar' , starring Fahad Mustafa and Sanam Baloch. It was written by Umera Ahmed. That show was solely about physical abuse. Kiran( sanam Baloch) takes divorce from her wealthy well off husband just because he beats her up. You must watch that and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Loved the episode. When I got my o level results this week I saw that I had an A* in English Literature and so I would actually like to thank both Aamna and Hassan for it as their reviews definitely polished my analytical skills and also made me question a lot of themes in the plays I was studying. Excellent review of Amna and Hassan on Darlings. Beautiful understading of Amna about relashionship of mother and daughter. They showed it so naturally. Hamarey dramon mein tou aik larki pe abuse ho raha hai tou har koi abuse kar raha hai that does not look natural. And the style they showed about lower middle class people aur unka rehn sehn is so simple and natural that catches you up whole of the movie. Lekin aik baat Shifali ne 16 aaney sahi ki jo wo story batati hai bichoo aur mandek ki, bilkul sahi ke bichoo kabhi apni fitrat nahi badal sakta, ager mard ne aik baar hath utha liya tou bus phir wo apni fitrat dikhata hi rahe ga, is liye is pe kabhi aitbar mat karo. Pata nahi mujhe tou samajh nahi aati ke khawatein kiyun aesey relationships ko sari zindagi le kar chalti rehti hai sirf is aas pe ke mard kabhi badal jaey ga. Yaad hai Badru aakhir mein maan sey kehti hai ke mein tou mandak hoon na aur Hamza ko khol deti hai. This is the moral of the story. Worth seeing brilliant movie.
I saw Laal Singh Chandda. It’s a beautiful must see story, even if you have seen Forest Grump, story line is tweaked to reflect what happened in India. It’s a must see. It didn’t work in India, not because it’s not a good story. It’s because Indians want to boycott Aamir Khan because of PK. Silly people! They will be the first ones running to Netflix. Please see it… it’s a great story line.

Okay so I had started watching Darlings when it had dropped on Netflix but I just couldn't sit past 30 minutes but after watching your review I MAY give it another shot. Also, will definitely check out Wedding Season. PS. Delhi Crime s2 is coming out on 26 August, I hope both of you will review that as well. :D
When I watched Darlings .... It was a trigger for me. Throughout I felt like standing up for Badru. My husband was sitting right next to me and relaxing me. But I was not at peace till the twist. And I liked the ending it was perfect but it kept you at the edge till the last scene
The comparison between pak dramas and the movie darlings is not right as Amna said that if it would be dragged to 40 episodes it wouldn't be that good. There was a drama named Kankar, I am not sure whether you guys have seen it or not had this plot that the male character slaps his wife and based on that the girl takes a stand for herself and leaves him.
Darlings is an entertainment giving a social message and not trivialising it. and fairly real situations while dramas on both side try to show it in stereotypes preaching that good girls get justice but bad behaviour of others never condemned
Not at all amir khan is not over rated instead he is under rated he has never been appreciated like the way he should have been. He is responsible in choosing scripts and also his public appearances are responsible, without fake stardom that's why he is not likeable like Shahrukh and salman.
I likes Darlings, but I haves 2 questions, paleej.😊 1. If they planned a suicide using the recording, why did they tie him onto the track? 😀 2. What if he had not been hit by the train accidentally? He definitely would have taken revenge. 3. Her plans was not full proofs, but it was good lucks for her. So she was definitely not wearing headphones watching khana khazana when God was distributing good lucks. 😂 Sads demise of, I loves you. 😂 4. A roller coaster of emotions, good black humour.👍
So my take is that, none of the things they did or planned were full proof or very intelligent because at the end of the day these are to women from low income household living in a typical chawl and probably not too educated. No matter how strong Shamsu is, divorce is still a taboo for her, No matter what lengths Badri went to take revenge, she was too depressed to ever come up with a good plan. " Feeling aegi tab bataungi" was her plan all along. I think they internationally kept these flaws attached to the characters because that reality. In real life no one is Charlie's angel, the maneuvered in their given circumstance.

I had the same question why did they tie him up when it was supposed to look like a suicide scene? I mean when police would find his dead body afterwards, wouldn't they find out his hands and feet were tied to the railway track?
i recently watched kankar of sanam baloch and fahad mustafa where domestic violence was handled so sensitively by umera ahmed ,,,it was central theme of play and had 23-24 episodes and u want to watch one episode after other ,,,it doesnt have unbearable side plots ....plz watch it,,,,,one trivia is that mahira khan was supposed to play that character but she chose shehrezat over this because of spirituality
Loved the review of Darlings, it was spot on. It was all about the treatment of the plot, sprinkled with memorable characters and humorous situations. It kept me engaged throughout all the way to the end.
Its wrong that we dont have abuse as Central theme in our dramas . We have 2 best dramas on postmarital abuse (both are of sanam baloch's dramas) kankar which was based on physical abuse and khas based on emotional abuse . And also durre shahwar which was also based on emotional abuse by Inlaws.

One of the first piece of content that I watched on domestic violence which was handled maturely was the Pakistani drama called Kankar. Both Sanam and Fahad did a fantastic job while portraying their characters where the story took the audience through the abuse, abuser and the circumstances.
I feel offended that you are trying to compare Darling with Pakistani dramas. No comparison. Not even a single drama that I know of has even attempted to. Hadiqa kiyani first drama.. dealt with DV a little.. but it was not the central theme. Hum kahan ke sachchay thay.. another example of forgiving an abuser. Let's not even try comparing
I feel it’s pre conceived strategy to condemn the movie , ie Lal Singh Chaddha it’s afairly good movie. Cannot be forest hump anyway Secondly Shahrukh because of his English and humour may sound pompous but he is most humane in real life to people while others you mentioned did it only for media. Shahrukh is an excellent human being.
Amna and Hassan, do you guys remember “Zeb un Nisa” drama of ptv directed by Saira Kazmi? It was also about a domestic violence but yet it was so entertaining due to its treatment and storyline. So Pakistani dramas also used to be entertaining despite the sensitive topic but current dramas are completely opposite. Darlings was also a light movie and yet having a sensitive topic.
Darlings is an amazing movie touching on a very sensitive subject. Badru put up with Hamza maybe hoping for him to change. But once the realisation dawned that it will not she took charg and owned the situation. No where is she weak but just hoping for a change. Women need to acknowledge that there are times when things will not change and you need to get out before the worst happens. Amazing performances hope women take on board the message they have tried to convey
I actually feel that srk and Salman are less likeable than Aamir because Aamir has always created those movies that you just want to watch again with your family and hold a deep message. All three are great actors and huge superstars no doubt, and I feel like all three have their fortes as well. Salman is established as an ok actor with a lot of charisma (minus bajrangi bhaijan and maybe some other niche work) and srk is known for his classic romantic movies. He’s known as the Badshah because he holds that grandeur image in his work. But Aamir khans films always have a deep, hard-hitting message that revolves around his character. Look at Taare Zameen par, 3 idiots, Lagaan, talaash, Fanaa, secret superstar, pk, dangal and now laal singh chadda. Each of these movies are top tier and hold such deep messages. Maybe he’s less likeable to others because he doesn’t make conventional “Bollywood” movies all the time. All of his movies don’t have item songs thrown in and he doesn’t always do action movies to build a superhero kind of hype (like srk and Salman usually do) because most often, his movies focus on one or two characters and a message derived from their lives.
Hassan you SHOULD watch an anime series named "Monster" if you want to watch a psychological thriller. It's about a Japanese neurosurgeon working in a German hospital. One day he operates on a child Johan ( The monster). Tenma's life takes a 360 turn after that surgery. After nine years, Tenma finds out that the boy he saved is a serial killer. And the story of Tenma trying to kill Johan begins... It's simply a masterpiece. You have be a keen observer of every small detail and actions of each character if you want to understand the story. The way Johan manipulates people and situations is fascinating. The way this series portrays children in a gray light is dope! All episodes are available on RUclips in English dub.
I never would have in my wildest dreams thought someone recommending Monster anime on pakistan review channel. It's is such a good anime but also bit long and obviously the twist and turns in the anime are mind-blowing
I have never seen dark comedy Pakistani content. Darlings is one of it type in terms of execution and relationship dynamics. Darlings is not what you see everyday in Pakistani content.

My sister told me to watch this movie. I was in an abusive relationship for 10 years, the same issue with alcoholism and drugs. It took me 10 years to come out of it despite my family being so supportive. An abusive chain is hard to break, once an abuser always an abuser. End of the story. As mentioned here I live in Canada despite all the resources I was a victim of brainwashing and self-pity. I realized that fighting with your inner self is harder than the abuser. You are the one only who can break the chain of abuse.I still consider myself lucky to come out of the situation. Living a very successful life here now, finishing my studies and working in the school system. Thanks to Allah

Me and my mother in law were discussing throughout the movie that how natural looking Alia and Shifali's makeup and dressing is. You can tell these people are from middle or lower middle class family. They are wearing such normal prints and no one looks glamours. Whereas our dramas show gareeb tareen larki with full face makeup and straight hair. I loved how Alia Bhatt had the hair bun like we all do when we are doing chores around the house. Sooo relatable in terms of how both mother and daughter looked.

Maria, I am super bothered by Saba Faisal's character Qudsia's look in Habs. She clearly doesn't look like someone from a lower middle class family! Her outfits, makeup and even nail paint are always so on point.
Earlier Pakistani dramas used to be liked this. Especially in comparison to Indian dramas. I remember when zindagi channel started in India this was one factor that hooked us all. Like in Zindagi Gulzar hai, how natural was Kashaf from her tuti chappal to mediocre kitchen. unfortunately in the name of high production quality Pakistani dramas have lost touch with reality.

Dude aamir khan is certainly not overrated. He has done some really exceptional films like 3 idiots, tare zameen par, andaz apna apna etc. And it's true that his works may include some flops as well, but as an actor and a person, he is really likeable. I know that shahrukh khan's fandom is nowhere comparable, but calling amir a perfectionist for his work, I don't think is wrong

They were never going to redeem hamza, hamza was a selfish character and that was always shown to us, he didnt stop drinking because of Badru's pregnancy or the promise he made, he quit drinking due to cirrhosis, so he doesn’t end up dying…..
he goes home and then gets to know that she’s pregnant so he portrays in front of her that he is a “changed man” even in the song laa ilaaj, he gives badru a “new phone” but he just took that from the dead body they found at the train station…. So he was just pretending to be a changed man
An abuser will always be an abuser. There is no other way about this statement. If you think that your abusive partner will somehow miraculously change one day, believe me it's not going to happen. I have learned this lesson after wasting the precious 22 years of my life. And finally made myself free and able to breathe free, yes I said breath freely!.

Darlings have a progressive storyline unlike most of our dramas. Never once was violence glamourized and from the very beginning, it was shown in a bad light. Women were not crying or taking abuse like they deserved it. The reason for Alia to stay in the abusive marriage was not that she had no other choice but she stayed for love. It was her choice. In our dramas, girls ain't usually given this choice and at times when they are, it usually comes with a choice to live alone forever with "talaq ka dhabba". The ending was also exceptionally well.

The highlight of darlings was to emphasize that the abuser does not change. They are not worth romanticizing which is a highlight of Pakistani dramas that fleetingly show abuse for TRP ratings.
I am in awe of Alia 's decisions when it comes to being a producer, the topic and theme, the casting, new directors, a woman's gaze, and the decision of going ott!!!

one important thing that sets Darling apart from Pakistani dramas these days is that the male lead is not romantised and sympathized even for a moment. Even when they show his vulnerable side or his problems, you understand him but you do not like him. The main thing for me was this - you do not like Hamza at all even when he is good you are constantly made aware about what a monster he is.

I think another solid reason for a strong audience impact was the casting. Other than the ensemble casting I’m glad they didnt take a conventional hero opposite Aliaa because majority of the subcontinental audience start sympathising with even an abuser if its played by a favourite hero. This is the case in pakistani dramas as well, the heroes are romanticised because the audience is used to loving the face behind the character. And ofcourse the error in writing is there too in some.
About Aamir khan: Infact Salman n sharukh are very pompous. People don't even know what work Aamir khan is doing through his Pani foundation in Maharashtra as it's telecasted on marathi channels. Watch maulana tarik jameels video on how humble he found aamir. Unfortunately, he speaks truth and people don't like him. He had criticized Modi and taken strong stance at many occasions hence target of hate due to his religion.

I think kankar drama of Sanam Baloch was a Pakistani show which showed domestic violence, I remember liking it in the end because they did not glorify the husband's character and showed Sanam coming out of it. and also khaas drama of Sanam Baloch dealt with mental and emotional abuse.

I think in terms of Pakistani Dramas Kankar and Udaan got it. These dramas were serious and kept the focus on the issue. Not for a moment the male lead was made into a hero, the female lead takes charge and turns things around for herself. That is why the assault here was not unbearable to watch ( obviously it's triggering),doesn't ever feel forced or uses for masala factor. They put forward a very strong and direct message from OST to poster to story and screensplay

Unfortunately, abusers can only change if THEY actually want to not when everyone around them want them to and that requires determination and effort, which many people aren't willing to do. I doubt any abuser can ever change especially when the abuse is frequent. People even assume that having a kid would magically change their spouse but that's an even worst idea because in such cases abusers become abusive to their own children as well or children grow up seeing abuse which is equally as destructive. These same children grow up to either become abusers or be in abusive relationships themselves. The only solution is to break the cycle and take therapy which still many people aren't aware about.

maybe you hvnt watched Forest gump.. taking an icon of a film which was so relatable to American people n history and turning it into this the acting was poor i think it was a little too much but even thats not the reason it was the story that failed I couldn't relate to it.. it made no sense at many places.. it was an awful film and thatsy the people rejected it even films before which were boycotted and released after a year were hit but this was a bad film i won't recommend it.. there was also too much support for the film but people who watched it didn't like it.. I think Aamir should go back to his roots and stop copying films 2 flop copies back to back.. and copying such an iconic film was always a bad idea.

You should watch "Zaib un Nisa" an old drama, directed by Saira Kazmi ( Ali Kazmi's mother) a legendry actor and director of Pakistan who also directed "Dhoop Kinare". The whole drama is based on physical and emotional abuse and domestic voilence by her Husband ( played by Adnan Siddique)
I think along with going beyond borders, you people should review old Pakistani dramas which were aired on PTV. They were the best and golden time of Pakistani Drama. We will see alot of different stories and also actors that we don't mention anymore.

Hi Aamnaji and Hassanji I am an Indian living in UK. I always watch your reviews and a big fan of Pak dramas. I watched Darlings and I can relate to that because I am a victim of domestic abuse. I moved out and my divorce under process. For me abuse started after 1 year of marriage. First it was verbal then turned to physical. I was in Dubai that time. Then like Alia's character I also hoped it will stop.My husband also had drinking problems. I came to UK because I want to escape. After 2 years I brought him here.After few years all started again . He verbally abuses my mum and brother also. I don't have the permission to talk to them .My mum who was in India ,I usually talk to her while he was at work. I am a nurse. He abused me financially, emotionally, and physically as well. I have a daughter .Like every Asian women I thought I want a father figure in my daughter's life. I had bruises in my body which my colleagues saw as well. How ironic it is as a A&E nurse we are supposed to notice on patients and report it and provide support here, but in my case I couldn't do it. My manager who is an English lady who was very supportive . I was only one nurse in A&E who was from India and Pak. But I have some doctors from India and Pak. Any way I moved out from my house to hospital accommodation with my daughter. I decided to move out because I noticed that it affecting my daughter's life as well. She is a brilliant student but it was affecting her studies and emotional as well. Now I lost all my money also. My mum who was a teacher who supported me my brother as well who is in Dubai. So when I watched Darlings it affected both me and my daughter. But I love that movie. We are still going through counselling sessions for us because of the trauma. But we are happy now. I got my freedom to watch TV and read books which I couldn't do it before. I love your reviews and love you both. Like Aamnaji I am a big fan of Fawad Khan and Firoz Khan. Love u .

Please refrain from calling Amir Khan a pompous actor. He is by far the most sensitive actor that Bollywood has had. Compared to Shahrukh Khan who is an extremely intelligent person, Amir is the layman who is cute and ropes in subjects which focus societal wellbeing.
Both my grandads had beaten their wives in the first decade of marriage, often after being instigated by other relatives. But they were also the loveliest of men to the world and the rest of us. My dad raised his hand once but mum told him if he ever does so again she will call the police. He never did again. But he was emotionally and verbally abusive throughout our childhood. I also know of someone who's dad beat their mum and they also did the same. The cycle can be broken or repeats itself. But it causes damage either way. I know many childhoods destroyed and these issues leave imprints. Subconsciously it stays with you. I've had fear of marriage ever since and have only seen it as entrapment for women.

#LalSinghChaddha didn't do well bcz of #boycott lobby. Amir Khan was already boycotted bcz of previous kiran rao's statement of India not being tolerant or livable anymore. The controversy took place quite few years ago. But since then Amir Khan is boycotted by Godi media & Modi bhakts. Why Salman Khan is not boycotted cz he previously praised Modi, flew kites not like amir khan who has openly spoken against current situation in our country.
Shahrukh is not pompous at all he is extremely intelligent, witty and can be charmingly self deprecating. Lal Singh Chadha has been made to flop just like 83- it is a political targeting.

I’m just perturbed that many good Pakistani dramas were removed from Netflix, and isn’t it time that your drama producers punt some wonderful Pakistani dramas to Netflix!
If it's about comparing our dramas let's not do that. In Darlings, she fights back eventually meanwhile in Pakistani dramas the girl remains a bechari till the last episode. In one of the recent dramas like Mere Humsafar, the girl (Hala) is completely helpless and is getting tortured in each episode if we saw her pull the reigns of her story that would've been interesting but plz don't compare them. Pakistani writers are yet to write good female characters that fight back.
I think a really important distinction is that they didn't show him hitting her, they would cut away to the neighbour and her reaction. Also they never redeemed the hero. That's why it didn't become super dark and remained palatable.

There was a Pakistani drama called ' kankar' , starring Fahad Mustafa and Sanam Baloch. It was written by Umera Ahmed. That show was solely about physical abuse. Kiran( sanam Baloch) takes divorce from her wealthy well off husband just because he beats her up. You must watch that and you will be pleasantly surprised.

When I got my o level results this week I saw that I had an A* in English Literature and so I would actually like to thank both Aamna and Hassan for it as their reviews definitely polished my analytical skills and also made me question a lot of themes in the plays I was studying. Excellent review of Amna and Hassan on Darlings. Beautiful understading of Amna about relashionship of mother and daughter. They showed it so naturally. Hamarey dramon mein tou aik larki pe abuse ho raha hai tou har koi abuse kar raha hai that does not look natural. And the style they showed about lower middle class people aur unka rehn sehn is so simple and natural that catches you up whole of the movie. Lekin aik baat Shifali ne 16 aaney sahi ki jo wo story batati hai bichoo aur mandek ki, bilkul sahi ke bichoo kabhi apni fitrat nahi badal sakta, ager mard ne aik baar hath utha liya tou bus phir wo apni fitrat dikhata hi rahe ga, is liye is pe kabhi aitbar mat karo. Pata nahi mujhe tou samajh nahi aati ke khawatein kiyun aesey relationships ko sari zindagi le kar chalti rehti hai sirf is aas pe ke mard kabhi badal jaey ga. Yaad hai Badru aakhir mein maan sey kehti hai ke mein tou mandak hoon na aur Hamza ko khol deti hai. This is the moral of the story. Worth seeing brilliant movie.
I saw Laal Singh Chandda. It’s a beautiful must see story, even if you have seen Forest Grump, story line is tweaked to reflect what happened in India. It’s a must see. It didn’t work in India, not because it’s not a good story. It’s because Indians want to boycott Aamir Khan because of PK. Silly people! They will be the first ones running to Netflix. Please see it… it’s a great story line.
Guys i have seen Laal Singh Chaddha. Its a really good movie. Very moving. Don’t go by the flop status. I hope u get to watch it soon and i am sure u will agree with me 😇
Okay so I had started watching Darlings when it had dropped on Netflix but I just couldn't sit past 30 minutes but after watching your review I MAY give it another shot. Also, will definitely check out Wedding Season.

When I watched Darlings .... It was a trigger for me. Throughout I felt like standing up for Badru. My husband was sitting right next to me and relaxing me. But I was not at peace till the twist. And I liked the ending it was perfect but it kept you at the edge till the last scene

The comparison between pak dramas and the movie darlings is not right as Amna said that if it would be dragged to 40 episodes it wouldn't be that good.
There was a drama named Kankar, I am not sure whether you guys have seen it or not had this plot that the male character slaps his wife and based on that the girl takes a stand for herself and leaves him.
Darlings is an entertainment giving a social message and not trivialising it. and fairly real situations while dramas on both side try to show it in stereotypes preaching that good girls get justice but bad behaviour of others never condemned

Not at all amir khan is not over rated instead he is under rated he has never been appreciated like the way he should have been. He is responsible in choosing scripts and also his public appearances are responsible, without fake stardom that's why he is not likeable like Shahrukh and salman.

1. If they planned a suicide using the recording, why did they tie him onto the track? 😀
2. What if he had not been hit by the train accidentally? He definitely would have taken revenge.
3. Her plans was not full proofs, but it was good lucks for her. So she was definitely not wearing headphones watching khana khazana when God was distributing good lucks. 😂 Sads demise of, I loves you. 😂

So my take is that, none of the things they did or planned were full proof or very intelligent because at the end of the day these are to women from low income household living in a typical chawl and probably not too educated. No matter how strong Shamsu is, divorce is still a taboo for her, No matter what lengths Badri went to take revenge, she was too depressed to ever come up with a good plan. " Feeling aegi tab bataungi" was her plan all along. I think they internationally kept these flaws attached to the characters because that reality. In real life no one is Charlie's angel, the maneuvered in their given circumstance.

I had the same question why did they tie him up when it was supposed to look like a suicide scene? I mean when police would find his dead body afterwards, wouldn't they find out his hands and feet were tied to the railway track?
i recently watched kankar of sanam baloch and fahad mustafa where domestic violence was handled so sensitively by umera ahmed ,,,it was central theme of play and had 23-24 episodes and u want to watch one episode after other ,,,it doesnt have unbearable side plots ....plz watch it,,,,,one trivia is that mahira khan was supposed to play that character but she chose shehrezat over this because of spirituality
Loved the review of Darlings, it was spot on. It was all about the treatment of the plot, sprinkled with memorable characters and humorous situations. It kept me engaged throughout all the way to the end.
Its wrong that we dont have abuse as Central theme in our dramas .
We have 2 best dramas on postmarital abuse (both are of sanam baloch's dramas) kankar which was based on physical abuse and khas based on emotional abuse . And also durre shahwar which was also based on emotional abuse by Inlaws.

One of the first piece of content that I watched on domestic violence which was handled maturely was the Pakistani drama called Kankar. Both Sanam and Fahad did a fantastic job while portraying their characters where the story took the audience through the abuse, abuser and the circumstances.

I feel offended that you are trying to compare Darling with Pakistani dramas. No comparison. Not even a single drama that I know of has even attempted to. Hadiqa kiyani first drama.. dealt with DV a little.. but it was not the central theme. Hum kahan ke sachchay thay.. another example of forgiving an abuser. Let's not even try comparing

Secondly Shahrukh because of his English and humour may sound pompous but he is most humane in real life to people while others you mentioned did it only for media. Shahrukh is an excellent human being.
Amna and Hassan, do you guys remember “Zeb un Nisa” drama of ptv directed by Saira Kazmi? It was also about a domestic violence but yet it was so entertaining due to its treatment and storyline.
So Pakistani dramas also used to be entertaining despite the sensitive topic but current dramas are completely opposite. Darlings was also a light movie and yet having a sensitive topic.
Shefali Shah is at her best in Monsoon Wedding.
Darlings is an amazing movie touching on a very sensitive subject.
Badru put up with Hamza maybe hoping for him to change. But once the realisation dawned that it will not she took charg and owned the situation.
No where is she weak but just hoping for a change. Women need to acknowledge that there are times when things will not change and you need to get out before the worst happens.

I actually feel that srk and Salman are less likeable than Aamir because Aamir has always created those movies that you just want to watch again with your family and hold a deep message. All three are great actors and huge superstars no doubt, and I feel like all three have their fortes as well. Salman is established as an ok actor with a lot of charisma (minus bajrangi bhaijan and maybe some other niche work) and srk is known for his classic romantic movies. He’s known as the Badshah because he holds that grandeur image in his work. But Aamir khans films always have a deep, hard-hitting message that revolves around his character. Look at Taare Zameen par, 3 idiots, Lagaan, talaash, Fanaa, secret superstar, pk, dangal and now laal singh chadda. Each of these movies are top tier and hold such deep messages. Maybe he’s less likeable to others because he doesn’t make conventional “Bollywood” movies all the time. All of his movies don’t have item songs thrown in and he doesn’t always do action movies to build a superhero kind of hype (like srk and Salman usually do) because most often, his movies focus on one or two characters and a message derived from their lives.

The guy in the wedding season is the hero in life of pie. He is also in Homeland, How I met your father, phillauri, and many more.

It's simply a masterpiece. You have be a keen observer of every small detail and actions of each character if you want to understand the story. The way Johan manipulates people and situations is fascinating. The way this series portrays children in a gray light is dope!

It's is such a good anime but also bit long and obviously the twist and turns in the anime are mind-blowing

I have never seen dark comedy Pakistani content. Darlings is one of it type in terms of execution and relationship dynamics. Darlings is not what you see everyday in Pakistani content.

I am an Indian woman living in the US. I had always heard that Pakistani dramas were really good but never knew where to watch. I accidently stumped on a drama on RUclips last year and ever since, I have got addicted to them. I watch Something Haute regularly, enjoy watching the show, and do watch the dramas based on your reviews. App dono bahut pyare ho and I love you both so so much.

You should have discussed the movie fully without bothering about spoilers and mentioned it in the beginning so people who have not watched the movie would have avoided it !!
