Excellent vid, truly. I was looking for Puffnstuff though. This is "On a Magic Carpet Ride".
alvin batiste the clarinet person is my grandfather
Your grandfather it's a Great Musician his sound whit Billy it's a important part of my life
Your grandfather influenced and taught some of the best musicians to ever come out of Louisiana
Yes,indeed he did and GB Alvin!
This is when the public TV form my country (Italy) still
was transiting good TV shows. Clarinet is a wonderful instrument in Jazz, and your grandfather is the reason why I'm here searching for some good material on that formation back in 77-78. I think that Alvin fitted very well also in such particular music. Check Puff'n Stuff for example (not this which is On A Magic Carpet Ride)
sigh... our one chance to hear Alvin Batiste on youtube... lost forever?
Cameo's Charlie Singleton killin' it in the white pants on guitar....dude is amazing!
cut is actually called "On a Magic Carpet Ride". Great Video!
Randy’s playing is off the chain here. Maybe I’m biased but he’s just driving the whole thing for me. Perfect perfect tone for this music and his style of playing too. So much Growl. Im sure he’s a lifelong fan of tube Amps
Ray Mouton (no glasses): Kramer Guitar
That's Randy Jackson from "American Idol" on the bass
now in Journey
Randy's glasses are incredible!
Amazing!
I had the fortune to jam with Ray a few times...he has something rare.
Yo Dawg, the glass are little big, but I'm feeling you dawg!
WOW... Great jam...!!
Randy Jackson has some funky licks
and Billy is Always on top of his game..!!
First off I have to give props to Mr.Billy Cobham. What a gift to the music world. He is a BEAST of a BULL on set. The band is quintessential. Have you heard Tom Coster lately? Still smashing. Billy trailblazed in his own way and this group of musicians just added the spark that created fire. Well Mr. Randy Jackson. This is what I have waited so long to see. I have heard plenty of stories of Randy Jackson playing jazz fusion, specifically with Billy. This clip proves Randy Jackson was formidable, with groove and chops to spare. He was on Billy Cobham like a bad cold. I am also into vintage instruments and that P Bass has unique character, and coming out of an Ampeg amp no less. Some of those bass runs you can actually hear in some of latter his pop work. I won't even mention his killer R & B work. Since his American Idol days I don't know how much he plays bass anymore but I will submit my vote for Randy to be placed in the same company as top fusion bassists at that time. Much RESPECT. You have to have something special as a bass player to be able to hang alongside Billy Cobham. Randy Mouton? Killing. Charlie Singleton? Of Cameo? WOW.
Clarinetist Alvin Battiste taught at Lousisana State University music department. Randy Jackson was one of his students.
Agreed 👏🏾
WOW that's incredible TOM COSTER!!
I've always liked the sound of Jazz piano played on a CP-70. Its such a distinctive tone, yet also a tone despised by so many keyboardists and non-keyboardists alike because of its sharp attack and lack of perceived warmth. I always viewed it as alternate voice for pianists in the same mold as the Rhodes and Clavinet were/are.
Its also interesting to watch two of the youngest players(both stage right) in Cobham's band before they went on to the next level. Charlie Singleton(guitar) would go on to become a key member of the funk group Cameo. Randy Jackson(bass) who would go on to work with numerous superstar acts including Aretha Franklin, Journey, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey before becoming a household name as one of the original judges for American Idol.
Saw this same lineup sans batiste in Orlando fall 1979. Incredible show still Recall walking down the middle aisle of the theatre all the way to the front of the stage during Billy’s solo. Unbelievable!
Randy Jackson (American Idol) Charlie Singleton ( Cameo) (Phantom)
Randy Jackson is playing the bass here
This tune actually is "On a Magic Carpet Ride" from the same album. No one can possibly play like this while puffin' stuff. 😊

Blake Kersey you’re right it’s not puffinstuff! But this live version of On a Magic Carpet Ride is priceless!
Bkkersey93 He talks funny
He is the fucking craziest drummer ever!!
Wow, 7 years up here, and the title still hasn't changed--what's going on?
Yeah, NOT Puffin' Stuff. I don't think Cobham ever played that song live. I never have seen any video of him playing the tune.
@Diversityman That guitar player is The Great Ray Mouton
Great sometimes going backwards!Good to see the american idol bass master with those "funk shades",sorry to say, this is "ON A MAGIC CARPET RIDE"from his album'MAGIC"!!
I wonder if the complete concert was ever released on media.
@Diversityman At about that time, this band used a guitar player named Randy Mouton. I believe that is him.
That is Ray Mouton. He is my best friend. We live in Lafayette Louisiana
@habell71 Yes that is a p-bass. When P basses were first made they looked like that and later the design changed,
Any idea where the rest of this concert is? Great post by the way. Thanks.
Randy Jackson is a serious damn player
Calm down
This isn't Puffnstuff!! Change your title.
Not puffnstuff. Please change the fucking title.
Easy.
Gotta be one of the worst videos I have ever seen, in terms of the camera shots, angles, etc. WTF? You know? (Great tune, tho!)
