I am French, and I will enlighten you in an objective way... You are comparing what is not comparable! Let me explain: the French pension system requires much higher contributions from employees than in the United States. In France, there are no pension funds (except for optional contributions), but an extremely reliable public system. By retiring at 60, 62 years old, the state does not make any gift, it is income that is deferred in time and returned as a financial asset like a "state bond". What you have to understand, every month we contribute a part of our salary in a compulsory way. Macron is lying, he just wants to transform a public system into a contribution for pension funds in the coming years. This guy is a traitor, he just wants to allow Black Rock and others to get their hands on a real treasure to perpetuate their system which can only survive by the arrival of new capital. The difference between the French public system and the private funded system is the risk that it would put on the population... In case of a financial crash, French pensioners will continue to receive their pensions, pensioners of pension funds can lose everything. The French pension system was created after the second world war, and it can resist to a third war, it was thought by people who have known this horror and who wish... Do you understand now?
EH OH!!! Attendez!! Vous voulez expliquer, mais... you have to tell the whole story! Remember when France reduced the work week??? Because it was quite a long time ago! So now, to work 2 more years may be necessary! And nonetheless, plenty of Americans would be glad not to work a 40 hour work week!
@@skontheroad all this has nothing to do with 35,55,100 of work per week, the contributions for the pension funds are proportional to what you earn... Just to inform you that the French work on average 37.5 per week
@fabien M OF COURSE it has to do with work hours. And contributions. Just like in the US. But in France, the work culture is not at all comparable to that of the work culture in the US.
US pension: After WW2, about 65% of US workers had 2 pensions - Social Security (like France) and company pension. By the 1990s, most companies stopped offering pensions and switched to the 401k (tax-deferred fund), where the worker contributes a small percentage of the salary. This fund is invested in Wall Street and US Treasury bonds. You can decide on the risk level. Not all companies have this option and contribution is a personal choice, not an obligation. Public workers (teachers, police, firefighters, etc) usually have a separate pension fund managed by the County or State government. In general, a good retirement plan in the US has 3 sources - Social Security, 401k fund, personal savings or retirement accounts. You can take money from the 401k at age 59.5, Social Security at 62 (reduced benefit) and 67 (full benefit). You have more freedom with the personal savings and retirement accounts. At age 65, healthcare is provided by Medicare but you have to pay a supplemental charge each month. Work hours: 40 hours/week + overtime pay if more than 40... but not all employers respect this guideline. Most people have 2-3 weeks vacation and the US has fewer holidays. For every 10-12 years of employment, a US worker works about 1 year more than a French worker. So 42 years of work in France is about 45 years in the US.
There is no such thing as "basic rights of retirement" lol. You people just arbitrarily attach the word "right" to any thing you like and act like you're entitled to it. Also boo-hoo, French people, who already have some of the most mandatory vacation days anywhere in the world, have the same retirement age as everyone else now. What a tragedy.

Hello, A necessary clarification must be made for those who think the French benefit from their retirement earlier than other European countries. Let's face it; it's wrong. Indeed, too often, we confuse *"the legal retirement age"* (the age at which one can officially decide to retire), which is currently *62 years old* in France (but if you don't have all your trimesters, so the retirement pension decreases by the same amount), and "retirement age at full rate." which is situated between the ages of 65 and 67 depending on the number of quarters contributed, i.e., at least 172 quarters worked (43 years). If you retire at age 67, you will have a full pension (i.e., around 70 to 80% of the salary received at departure). Therefore, the full retirement age is about the same in France as in other EU countries, contrary to the urban legend. Raising this legal retirement age to 64, therefore, obliges all French people who have worked very young and already total 172 quarters or are very close to it, are, with this new law, obliged to continue to work anyway, whether they want to or not or if they're unemployed because no company wants to hire them anymore because they are too old in their eyes.. We no longer give them a choice. And, of course, those who started working at an early age are those who don't have a diploma and work in very physical and tiring jobs. Moreover, to justify this choice of the government, Macron had promised that in exchange, everyone would benefit from at least an income of €1,200 per month. However, it turns out that a member of the opposition (a socialist) decided to check these figures announced by the government. He then realized that, in reality, it only concerned a tiny part of the French, 72,000, instead of the 2,000,000 told. Knowing that in addition, the government has used all possible and imaginable subterfuges to prevent the opposition from expressing itself. And, despite the promise made not to have recourse to Article 49.3, which makes it possible to dispense with the vote of the National Assembly and thus impose this law without it being possible to oppose it, Élisabeth Borne, the First Minister, has just indicated tonight the use of this famous article. This explains this very great anger and the situation of revolt currently occurring in France.
Ah yes, they justify the choice of the government.....and hold no votes proceed anyway. The government is for the people, not the economy....and your justify it by going its the law? Look at America ever heard of the medicade gap in how cancer goes up so suddenly at 65 or 67 but its actually when the government is required to start treating people.
@@Coldbird1337 I don't think so, but what's different today than the last days of protest against this reform is that this time the young people have come in much greater numbers because of this recourse to 49.3. In general, they're much more virulent than ordinary citizens when they express their anger. This is why there have been quite a few violent outbursts. Moreover, at the same time and for the same reasons the garbage collectors are on strike, the sidewalks of Paris are strewn with household waste, including all kinds of objects (bottles, for example), which can serve as projectiles for the demonstrators. This wasn't the case during the demonstrations of the yellow vests. At that time, the police had posted themselves at all strategic places (up to 400 km from the capital) to search all the vehicles, and all the people they guessed were going to the Parisian demonstrations. This prevented the demonstrators from arming themselves against them. But, this time, the weapons (the projectiles, therefore) are finally directly available on the spot. In addition, demonstrators can set fire to various piles of garbage bags in different places in the capital, forcing firefighters and police to run from one place to another and thus create a diversion to seize strategic locations. Or to take them from behind also to disperse them and make them much less effective in their attempts at repression. In addition, the young people and the demonstrators are also outraged because the police have once again used violence in a completely unexpected way and without reason while the demonstrators were peaceful and content to march in protest. Many images were broadcast on TV, showing these police abuses on women and older adults (expected, since it's about retirement) who did nothing wrong, which angered them even more. Therefore, ultimately, knowing my compatriots, I don't see how it will all turn out. But, it's indeed likely to heat up, perhaps not a revolution strictly speaking, but riots, surely. So, a revolt (as in May 68) is quite possible. Because, in truth, the anger doesn't stop at this pension reform. You should also know the media in France are all owned by billionaires. Therefore, journalists, economists, and the various speakers on TV sets are generally pro-neoliberalism and present the facts in a biased way. This intensely irritates the French. Macron was elected in the second round to counter Marine Le Pen's party, considered far-right. Abstention was also a record. What makes this president not very legitimate. The main right-wing party holds the Senate even though it did not win 5% of the votes. And yet, it tipped the scales in favor of pension reform. In contrast, more than 70% were against (96% for active people, those who work, therefore). The French, therefore, no longer feel represented anywhere and have the impression of living in an autocracy. For fifteen years now, and even more, there have been many revelations about the actions of the various successive governments, many betrayals, dirty tricks, also adherence to the Maastricht Treaty while the French had refused by citizen referendum, the dismantling of French industries and their resale by cutting to foreign countries, massive relocations, labor laws which have constantly reconsidered social achievements, etc. have led to a very tenacious resentment among the French. This is why the country is on the verge of implosion.

The pb is Macron does this to pay for the juge debt. THIS REPORT IS FACTUALLY INACCURATE. The normal retirement age in Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Austria are not 62. They are 65 (SWE & AUT), 66 (PRT), 67 (ITA & GRC). The only other European countries to have 62 as their normal retirement age is Ukraine, Malta and Slovakia. While there are some variations based on gender, none of these exist in the comparred countries. The mentioned coutries have earliest point of retirement at 62, but this is reserved for certain professions or people who want to retire without a full pension.
It's actually the same for France: most people don't retire at 62 currently, because even if you are allowed to do it, you won't get a full pension depending on how many years you've worked (you can have to work up until 67 to get it). The mean age at which French people retire is actually between 63 and 64 currently.
62 isn't the normal retiring age in France either though. Most people haven't reach 43 years of full time work by 62 and have to work past that age to get a full pension. We have to work 43 years, or reach the age of 67 to get a full pension

This is true if you assume that this is a zero sum game. This is not. The wealth created by the workers isn't fairly shared between the workers and the shareholders. This wealth which has never been so high thanks to the automation and IT could contribute to the extra cost. The issue is that many tax rules have been introduced during the last 30 years in order to pay less tax. It concerns only the rich persons and the big corporations, not the small companies and the average citizen. We will need up to 10 billions to fund the extra cost of the french pension system. The tax fraud and tax optimization in France cost every year 15 to 20 times that amount needed to keep the pension system untouched.
Most people already have to work over the retirement because of minimum years of work done. Say, you have to be over 62 and also do 40 years of work in total. Moving it by 2 more years punishes anyone who started working at 18 and will require them to work more years to get to their benefits. If you start working at 30 because of education, you still have to work for those 40 years and will definitely go over the minimum retirement age to get to full benefits. The purpose of these changes is to further squeeze the poorest, most hardworking people some more.
Since the 1980s, the labour market has been reconfigured to put people out of work in the name of an ideology serving the globalist elite. The French economy went through an American revolution as it had to adapt its workforce to different and destructive methods of doing business. Parallelly, the workforce was no longer managed by a Personnel Department but a Human Resources Department. That's an immense difference. I could add to the list. What we see is a deliberate warfare on the populations but that's not new. It's all by design, premeditated in cosy offices, chateaus and private residences. The 'beast' that is coming out of the ground is hellish.
How I understood it was that by raising the retirement age by two years, it would generate more revenue for the pension fund. Thus, each French citizen would get more money annually in their pension. But he shouldn’t have raised that money on the backs of the working class! Tax the Rich!
Hello Rachel That's where you're wrong. We (I'm French and was in the protest) won't get more money, but even less than before. The government's lies have been exposed recently : only about 10 000 people will gain less than 100€ per month "thanks" to this reform.

@@fabienm440 Question: What is Agirc-Arrco? Do French workers put some money each month into these funds?
Good on the French citizens are actually standing up for their basic rights of retirement

Brave french people!
Hello,
A necessary clarification must be made for those who think the French benefit from their retirement earlier than other European countries.
This explains this very great anger and the situation of revolt currently occurring in France.
my or my, could we be seeing another revolution?
Thanks for saying this! I was getting annoyed by all these foreign press talking as if we all retire at 62yo and giving no more context than ''yeah reform is needed but french doesn't want to'' 😐

For example in New Zealand Pension eligibility is 65 years and in future it may go to 67 years. Just informed.

Retirement ages go up in the years. American retirement right now is 65 but there's talk of increasing it.
Trump oppose raising age. And I agree with him. Raising age to the point people die or suffer severe health problems before they can enjoy retirement is nothing more than a cruel joke on the seniors.

Life expectancy is going up, we do get older than our parents or grandparents normally. And have longer educations = fewer work years to support a longer retirement. It does not add up unless we work at an older age than before..
Yes but work expectancy shouldn't!! If more people worked the pension age would stablelise, get all these toe ending benifit scammers who are capable of working and take there mobility scooters of them and stop blaming everything on foreigners!!!!!
Don't see many mobility scooters on the continent?
Wonder why ?
@@sebastiendine4834 You seem to know your stuff 👏👏
Save money and Liston to the People’s Voices!
How I understood it was that by raising the retirement age by two years, it would generate more revenue for the pension fund. Thus, each French citizen would get more money annually in their pension. But he shouldn’t have raised that money on the backs of the working class! Tax the Rich!
Tax the rich!
Hello Rachel
That's where you're wrong. We (I'm French and was in the protest) won't get more money, but even less than before. The government's lies have been exposed recently : only about 10 000 people will gain less than 100€ per month "thanks" to this reform.
@@TapulanHoneyBadger good, less money to the useless eaters
It's actually the opposite.
The actual government reduced taxes to the hyper rich, and this reform is here to pay for it. They already cut expenses in unemployment aides and public service (mainly reducing wages/numbers of teachers/doctors).
The excuse is "France already taxes the rich higher than anyone else". Meanwhile, the 0.0001% of the population generates unprecedented benefits.
@@Omegon8536 I see you've not been following what's been happening in Paris.
