I made these yesterday. They were amazing. Tried many versions including with paprika (yum) and another version I made was with some defrosted peas, crushed a bit - I also added some onion and garlic powder and they were amazing.
I like this. Simple. Healthy. I like the summary statement the ratio is about 2 teaspoons of whatever spice you want in the cup of cornmeal. I also like the idea of using the water to blend cilantro (or any other whole fresh item) and THEN put it into the recipe as instructed. I like super simple recipes like this that I can easily "memorize" and make. In my day- to- day life, I have a bunch of super easy recipes I don't have to think about much, and then some that I will pull out the notes. This one is easy. No notes necessary.
I love this. You totally nailed it for me. I’m exactly the same. Fancy recipes are wonderful at times but life is all about quick and easy and delicious. I’m going to begin working on a book in the near future that focuses on exactly this concept. Thanks for the support. Great feedback!!
Yes, banana bread please! Your videos are so chill and easy to watch. This one really inspired me to make my own tortillas and chips (just like my grams did every morning), gracias!
Loved this idea! I just made some, but they were premade tortillas, clearly had some added fat to them, and they were pretty thin. What I did was spray them lightly with water (with a spray bottle), then added my seasonings (Mrs. Dash No Salt "Fiesta Lime", it's all I had on hand at the time) and followed your cook temp and time and man were they good and crunchy! Thanks so much for all of your fun videos, you've helped me on my plant-based journey, love them all! Now I want to get the tortilla press and a taco shell former. Thanks again :-)
I’ll be making those! The flavor that comes immediately to my mind is cumin. I love the flavor of cumin. And half cumin/half red chili. Or green chili/red chili/garlic. I have to stop. I have to get to the kitchen! Thanks. Love, love, love your videos.
I love this! I love all your videos and I thank you and your comrades for putting all of this into existence!!! I watch daily. Only three months in and need all the help I can get! You are my fav!
The algorithm has me watching vintage WYW today and I'm loving it. I'd gotten away from the simplicity of when I first stopped eating animals, so thanks for being a part of the with me!
This is good, thanks. I'll buy a tortilla press eventually because it's cost effective, like you said. Today and yeste3rday, I made tortilla chips from premade extra thin corn tortillas. I am trying to convince my Dad to go whole food plant based since he has heart disease and this diet clearly cures the problem. He also has atrial fibrillation, and there was a study of obese people in Australia who went on a diet to help with atrial fibrillation: it lowered the frequency by like 80% and the duration/severity by like 50%. This is very important. My dad really enjoyed the chips! I got better at making them already. My parents tend to think everything is ok just being on a statin, but there is still underlying heart disease. Dad also got a stent in the anterior descending artery after 80% blockage found. T his is clearly heart disease caused by the rich western diet. The obstacles to change with my parents are pretty similar to many people, I bet: first, they appear resigned that it's inevitable to have health problems while old. Second, they have the idea that diet couldn't possibly change or cure the problem. Third, they enjoy their current food and cannot However, Dad is somewhat open and will talk to the cardiologist about it. I will gather key information and make a presentation to my Dad, including highlighting Caldwell Esselstyn's video stating 'heart disease is nothing but a toothless paper tiger'. He's a good speaker. My Dad is technical and scientific. The more he sees, the more interested he will get. Thanks again!
I was diagnosed with AFib a couple years ago and decided I needed to lose weight and went on a whole food plant based diet with no oil and lost over 100 pounds and since I have not had one occurrence of AFib and further I am not on any drugs including blood thinners. So yes, it does work!
Hi...I hope you were able to get your dad on a plant based diet. Prayers for you and your family to be really healthy. Your plan to try to help him is wonderful.
@@dauntiekay2768 wow! I was told that blood thinners are for life! I'm really surprised that you were able to go TOTALLY off of that blood thinner! That's wonderful!
Having heart disease, I know that a WFPD works to reverse it. In the meantime, your Dad should know that daily magnesium supplements stop AF. Good luck to him! I had a stubborn neighbour who wouldn't take any supplements and after having a few cardioversions, he found taking magnesium was a lot easier.
Over the top!Build your own tortilla chips! This week we are making the switch to making our own chips after watching this video. Great cilantro and chile tortilla. You truly understand food addiction. We agree making your own will slow down the amount. Also you just taught us a process that will bring the family together in cooking our own chips and then enjoying them. Thanks! GREAT VIDEO!
That warms me! We do love the family event part of making them. We often eat them right as we are making them, lots of fun! Can't wait to get an update from you on how it went, Tama! So happy you and your family are making these changes together, and it sounds like everyone in the house is really embracing it, which has got to feel good.
Like the ideas! You are making me want to buy a tortilla press - but I'm not sure I can justify it as a kitchen staple. My favorite thing to do when making chips is to add some lime juice to the tortillas before baking them.
Why would I watch this at 7am?! I'm starving now lol I love the idea of the add ins. YUM! Do you not worry about the masa not being organic? Would love to hear your thoughts on gmo's!
I prefer organic, but I am not perfect about it by any means. And I definitely prefer non-GMO since I don't think this planet actually needs GMOs, if only we would stop eating meat and feed people with the starches instead of animals. But I also like saving money and voting with my veganism as best I can.
Laura Castillejos I knew I want the only one wondering this. I used to make my own tortillas with the exact same masa brand. But after watching Genetic Roulette I just can't do it anymore. It's a bummer, because everyone loves my homemade enchiladas and they used to be completely 100% from scratch. Of course, now that I ditched the cheese as well they're not quite as popular with my family....
If you have a Wondermill or similar electric grain mill you can grind dried organic corn from Great River Organic mills - sold on Amazon - and add lime to it which you can also get on Amazon, or Bob's Red Mill has organic masa.
Corn chips are my Achilles heel in this WFPB way of eating. It's the only thing that hangs me up. Thank you for this video! I'll be looking for that tortilla press for sure!
Love your videos and love the humor! I am thinking Pizza Tortilla single serving--maybe use the onion and garlic with herbs in the "crust" and veggies on top with a little nutritional yeast or maybe your homemade cheese sauce.
woke up early and viewed you making the tortilla with cilantro and garlic, onion powder. Made some for lunch but could not resist eating a couple from the oven...yummy
I'm Mexican and have never wanted to make a corn tortilla in my life until today! Thinking I'll go to my closest Mexican meat market and buy a press for homemade tortillas asap! (Ps- mom used to use wax paper for non stick tortillas) Lol... as far as brunch a very popular Mexican breakfast or brunch is chilaquiles. These are typically fried tortillas in a verde sauce or a salsa and most people would serve over easy eggs on them. I could totally see a tofu scramble being used with fresh pick. I would love to see you come up with an SOS version on this. Up for the challenge??
I've seen a few recipes out there. We used to love chilaquiles but ya they are not exactly a health food. I would be down to give it a shot! So glad you were inspired to go make some fresh tortillas. 😄 Let me know how it goes.
I'd opt for this corn flour - organic masa harina corn flour - as it is not GMO. You don't get as much for the money but it's totally worth not messing up your gut flora.
We love you!!! Had to comment before watching the video! During our vacation, we did the store bought video tortilla chips to help with the addiction. It worked along with the popcorn and dill pickle spray...lol...it's good. Now this vidoe. We order a press and we are ready. You are terrific!
Woo! That is great, so happy to hear you were doing your best to eat healthy on vacation! That is not easy sometimes, especially when you are just getting into the swing of things. Proud to hear it!
Your ideas and assistance along with Nick have been so encouraging. The oil got to us though and we ended up eating along of oil and we don't feel good like we were doing. But we are back to low oil again! Vacation is a nightmare for wflf!
I finally got my tortilla press a couple days ago. Thanks for the recommendation and the link. Good choice. Today, I decided to see if I could make some blue corn tortillas and maybe some chips. Very easy to use. One thing I did was press into the surface some of the flavorings like onion flakes, garlic granules, spice, etc. Onion flakes was the only thing that might not be everybody's style. I liked them, but they get/stay a little crunchy. Might be better to reconstitute them like you did with the cilantro. I didn't/couldn't wait to make any chips but one of the tortillas kind of fell apart and I let it become 'chips' in the pan....pretty good. Still haven't made the pico, but used some of the salsa I had from making Mrs. Plant's salsa, no salt, no oil. It actually called for sugar so I threw in a date, but will leave it out next time. Too sweet, for me. So. Thanks for the encouragement and now I can call myself a real (if not real good,) tortilla maker. lol...Lynn
Ok I have a trial run in the oven now which should take me like 5 minutes to devour the entire loaf. It has wheat flour. I cannot get the consistency of the gluten free version figured out. I know squat about baking.
In San Diego I buy Mr. Rancho brand ( Berber in San Leandro ) soft taco sliders. Cut in half and place on a cookie sheet in toaster oven at 375F until stiff. Remove and sray lightly with high heat avo oil in a Mr.Misto bottle. Sprinkle with salt and smoked paprika ( Arab markets have best price ). Whole Foods also has their brand of soft tortillas.
Great video, I am excited to try tortillas! You talk about recipes the same way I do, so refreshing to see there are other people who think about food like that - most people just look at me like I am super weird, LOL!
well, obviously the no meat and no dairy thing. but beyond that, no oil is so hard for people in my life to wrap their heads around, they just think I'm weird...or at worst think it is because I am incredibly concerned about my weight. They also just straight out do not believe me and think that oil is a health food- no open mind about it whatsoever because of what they already believe. Beyond that, I think the way I cook and combine foods is very different. I add fruit to a lot of savory dishes- like berries in salads, and bananas in tacos or mangos in rice. I just think outside the box on what would taste good together. I make tacos with jackfruit and curry. It's delicious, but most people have never even heard of a jackfruit. I also eat lots of different whole grains like quinoa, spelt, jerusalem artichoke pasta and lentil lasagna noodles. It's not weird to me, it's the most normal thing in the world to experiment with recipes and ingredients and combinations. I also do a lot of research on foods and health and ingredients so I know a lot about what is in your average gross processed crap. Most people seem just not to care or just not to want to know that stuff, because they might have to change something. I mean, Starch Solution??? What the hell, potatoes and carbs make you FAT! lol Crazy talk. Does that make sense? Do you get the same reactions?
Heather, we are going to be getting those same reactions for the rest of our lives, and the saddest part is that they often come from the people that are closest to us in our lives. As McDougall says, people want to hear good news about their bad habits; unfortunately that good news is not coming, and if it does come then it is a lie. I am so fortunate to have been able to get through to several people in my life who have transformed themselves like I have for me, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the impact I would like to have. And that is why I started the channel, to spread the word as far and wide as I can, to support people that want to change and are struggling, to advocate for a world of love, compassion, equality, sustainability and a little bit of homesteading self reliance as well!! Thanks for being here. I look forward to getting to know you.
I also bake whole sweet potatoes regularly and then throw them in my bag for a snack.... that one always gets a big reaction! Like, wow, never thought of having a filling delicious sweet potato for a snack on the go?? lol
I've freeze-dried organic roma tomatoes and powdered them. I might try to add that, in small amounts, to these homemade tortillas. Any thoughts? I've also FD'd organic strawberries - did you ever try strawberries with the corn tortillas?
I did not really try a strawberry tortilla. But I have freeze dried them and love FD strawberries. Same with tomatoes and tomato powder, awesome stuff.
I love tortillas chips but haven't been eating them lately because want to make myself and now you have made it so simple for me to see I can! Thanks so much!
I purchased my tortilla press at my local Latino food market for $12. For those that want to buy a press and have a local market I would check there first. Great investment either way. Happy pressing!
Love your videos! Question: i like to make burritos and stick them in the freezer for later eating. Would i be able to make larger tortillas on this press?😁 to your knowledge would these tortillas fold up well enough to make a closed burrito. I have been searching for tortillas without all the added salt, yeast, oils with no luck im so excited to try these !
Liz Oliveira Liz Oliveira you might have to roll them with a rolling pin to make them large enough for a burrito. These tortilla have no additives so they don't keep well in the fridge, but I'm not sure how they would be in the freeze. I'd love to hear how it goes so we can do it too!
Cool :) i love meal prep.. Anhlything to make my life easier haha. Maybe i will roll them out and try first.thanks for the response and ill keep you updated!
Plus you don't get ALL those extra ingredients you don't need thank you so much I just bought some masa so I could try to make my own thank you so much DILLON I sure APPRECIATE all your help
I have been wanting to make my own tortillas, love the idea of the cilantro flavored one... might add lime juice to it as well... is cornmeal the same thing?
Corn meal is totally different. I am not sure what the difference is since both seem to be made from corn, but they are totally different products. I do love cornmeal as polenta, but that is a whole other thing. Now that you have said that, I will make a polenta video sometime too since that is usually filled with oil and junk and is due for a revamp! 😁
I love your recipes!! Especially your sauces. I started last week and I have lost 4 pounds! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! But, aren't you worried about GMO's???
Ya I have a heck of a backlog of video ideas for Elyse. Still trying to convince her to quit her job so we will see... 😆 but really, she will be joining me for some videos for sure.
Ok I never thought I would need a tortilla press but after watching your video I just bought one!!! Great video..looking forward to my first batch of homemade chips to eat with your yummy pico recipe :)
I have tried store bought corn tortillas and I found them to be gross. Yeah, I am used to eating the store bought flour tortillas. Currently, I have been wfpb sos-free for almost three months. Do you think it is a good idea to try these? I am afraid I still won't like them. Is there something I can add to this recipe to make them taste better? Then I will eventually take it out so they are wfpb sos-free. If you find this message, I appreciate any tips or suggestions you might have for us who haven't been wfpb sos-free as long as others. thx :)
Great video! I instantly tried it but my Tortillas always fall apart when I try to put them in the pan... I use regular plain corn meal and water. How thick do you make your Tortillas? And how moist is the dough?
I think this is just an issue of getting the water right. Try using less water and perhaps they won't fall apart so easy. Then if you use too little water that could make it harder too. Experiment a bit more and it will not take you long
Could add a low fat or not fat ranch or Caesar vegan dressing and add to spicy chili pepper flour and all some nutritional yeast for a type of cheesy nacho chip...god I’m hungry.
We're still checking out your videos, six years later! Love how this simple amazing approach lets us make better choices for both our bodies and habits! I'm determined to beat the pleasure trap at its own game. Thanks Dillon!
I use a glass pie plate to press my tortillas. Works great! Also adding some black pepper to the tumeric greatly improves absorption, acording to Dr Greger. Just use one part pepper for each 4 parts tumeric.
Cool thank you!
@@WellYourWorld i reckon that black pepper Greg suggested, would add an interesting punch to your turmeric tortillas too! YUM!
Heads up: I phoned Maseca & they definitely are a GMO corn. Bob's Red Mill is GMO-free but is ground coarser than Maseca (& it costs more) so must let sit longer to hydrate or dry grind in blender. Bob's is made from yellow corn & tastes WAY better than Maseca's white cornmeal! Love your channel:)
Thank you for checking on that, Josie's Journey! Heck NO to GMO...!
Yes always read the labels
I’m now addicted to making these.. one batch I did with salsa instead of water. They were great
@Jacqueline Judd what a GREAT idea!!! Thank you!

Still haven't made the pico, but used some of the salsa I had from making Mrs. Plant's salsa, no salt, no oil. It actually called for sugar so I threw in a date, but will leave it out next time. Too sweet, for me. So. Thanks for the encouragement and now I can call myself a real (if not real good,) tortilla maker. lol...Lynn
Dear Tortilla Maker, nicely done! Glad to hear you like the press!! Keep in touch!
Hehe...Thanks! :-)
Awesome video- definitely want to try all of them (except cilantro- I'd use parsley). I'd love to see a banana bread recipe video
Ok I have a trial run in the oven now which should take me like 5 minutes to devour the entire loaf. It has wheat flour. I cannot get the consistency of the gluten free version figured out. I know squat about baking.
I also know squat about baking. I'm sure some of your subscribers are banana bread aficionados 🍌🍞
I would try to add nutritional yeast and finely chopped jalapeno pepper :)
Yessss I was thinking that. How was it?
Hey, have you considered using your nutribullet to blend jalapeño
In your water when making chips. I only ask because you love jalapeño chips so much.
Going to try that out, thanks Jessica!
Totally going to try your strawberry idea and run with it!! Might try it out on friends this weekend!!
You better come back and tell me about it! 😁
@@WellYourWorld You got it!
@@WellYourWorld I did it! I cant post pics here. I sent you a photo to your fb messenger.
Cool vid. Never cooked with Masa before, is it low or high glycemic?
Great video, I am excited to try tortillas! You talk about recipes the same way I do, so refreshing to see there are other people who think about food like that - most people just look at me like I am super weird, LOL!
Tell me more! How do we talk about recipes that is weird for people? I am curious. 🙂
well, obviously the no meat and no dairy thing. but beyond that, no oil is so hard for people in my life to wrap their heads around, they just think I'm weird...or at worst think it is because I am incredibly concerned about my weight.
Like, wow, never thought of having a filling delicious sweet potato for a snack on the go?? lol
Ya best traveling food is just baked potatoes cold out of the fridge sitting on the seat next to me in the car, crumbs everywhere.
Ohhh yeah!
Great experiment! Thinking outside the box! And the crrrunch on those baked tortillas 👍
I will definitely be trying these!
TFS 👌🏼😎
They look so good!
Hi,
Awesome tortilla recipes!
Can we store these tortillas after cooking? And what is the way to store them please.
TIA
I love tortillas chips but haven't been eating them lately because want to make myself and now you have made it so simple for me to see I can! Thanks so much!
I’m thinking jalapeño or green chile in the water...🤔
some good ideas... Thank you!!
Great ideas! The end of the video had me cracking up 😂😂😂
I purchased my tortilla press at my local Latino food market for $12. For those that want to buy a press and have a local market I would check there first. Great investment either way. Happy pressing!
Raquel Alahakoon Maseca is very cheap locally too if you can find it. In Arizona it's everywhere.
OK I am absolutely loving your recipes I think the tumeric one would be really good with like an Aloo Gobi or any of the Indian food flavors
Thank you!
I use chili powder and sub lime juice for some of the water.
We live in Nicaragua and get hot fresh tortillas everywhere for about 50 cents a dozen.
Make yourself some blended spicy bean dip on there !
That sounds awesome!
Nice! I'm so going to make my own tortillas now!
Join the group if you haven't already and let us know how it goes. 😁
This was really good. Thanks!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
I’m curious whether your fingers are dyed from the turmeric? Mine look like an old smoker with yellowish brown fingertips from cooking with it.
Ha it should go away no? I do not have permanent damage yet 😀
Thanks a million
Thank you thank you love love love this ❤❤
thank you so much for step 🪜 by step 🪜 instructions 😃 AND examples
Strawberry tortillas filled with vegan Nutella and drizzled with strawberries and jam and coconut whip 😳
Ohhhhhhhh my jaw dropped you nailed it
Whole Foodie Beauty 🤤🤤🤤
Whole Foodie Beauty Stoooop!
Oh dear. ❤❤❤
Great!! What a smart idea 🎉🎉🎉
good to know, I have absolutely no desire to have a polenta tortilla! and yes! a polenta video would be rad, I've never had it before.
Ok cool, I don't have it often but I love it so we will do that.
I have cornmeal in the house that of course was a tortilla fail.
I wonder if the cornmeal could be ground to flour in the Bullet to use it up.
Wow this is mukbang by a big American guy. Inspiring. Love your food.
I love your recipes!! Especially your sauces. I started last week and I have lost 4 pounds! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! But, aren't you worried about GMO's???
Awesome!! Cannot wait to try! Looking forward to your banana bread cookbang!
oh jeez, pressure is on now! 😆
WeLL....you make everything look so good in YouR WorLD :)
Maybe Elyse can share her cheese sauce recipe someday too :D
Ya I have a heck of a backlog of video ideas for Elyse. Still trying to convince her to quit her job so we will see... 😆 but really, she will be joining me for some videos for sure.
Ok I never thought I would need a tortilla press but after watching your video I just bought one!!! Great video..looking forward to my first batch of homemade chips to eat with your yummy pico recipe :)
That makes me happy, you will get a lot of joy out of it. Excellent kitchen investment! 🤘
I make my own sos granola instead of buying cereal. Maple syrup, peanut butter, oats, nuts, dried fruit, bake.
If you find this message, I appreciate any tips or suggestions you might have for us who haven't been wfpb sos-free as long as others. thx :)
I think you will like the homemade tortillas way more than the store bought junk. The homemade ones dont keep well but they sure do taste great fresh!
How would it be if I made my own cornmeal by throwing popcorn in my Vitamix to a flour consistency?
Can you use 100 % whole grain flour?😊
Just love this video. Made me hungry!!!
Sounds like it is time to make some tortillaaaas!
That cilantro tortilla looks amazing!
Could you use nooch to make it cheesy?
When making chips, could you skip the cooking in the pan step and go straight to the oven???
@No Mad that's a great idea! I might try that!
Did it work to go straight to the oven?
Ooooh, love the cilantro! Yum!
Experiment a bit more and it will not take you long
Could it be the cornmeal vs corn flour? (Sorry - really late to this conversation)
Masa and corn meal are completely different ingredients... you specifically need masa to make tortillas.
Could add a low fat or not fat ranch or Caesar vegan dressing and add to spicy chili pepper flour and all some nutritional yeast for a type of cheesy nacho chip...god I’m hungry.
Very nice, thank you!
I wish I could meet someone like you IRL
I do exist IRL too you know.
