Two thumbs down?! This is one one my very favorite movies. It’s smart and emotional comedy with slapstick as well. I wonder what Siskel and Ebert would think of all the terrible movies of today. They would go back in time and this movie would easily get 2 thumbs up.
I liked the fact that this movie wasn't a laugh a minute. As outrageous as the premise was, it just seemed more thoughtful than that. Good performances, too. Not my favorite film, but I think these guys didn't comprehend the pace and aesthetic the movie was actually shooting for. I watched it recently, after many years, and I still enjoyed it.
They give it thumbs down, okay, but how can they not comment on Anne Ramsey's great, hilarious performance that garnered her an Oscar nomination? Even if you didn't like the movie I'd think you'd at least have to acknowledge how brilliant she was in it.
I love this movie and quote it constantly. Although I don’t agree that Siskel and Ebert disliked it because I love it I have to give them credit that they saw the potential in it, and would later praise De Vito’s direction later in War of the Roses Hoffa and Matilda. While I don’t agree with their opinion on the whole they praised some of the greatest parts of the movie and I give them credit for that.
I think they were a bit tough on Crystal. His purpose was to be constantly confounded and outmaneuvered by Devitos character which drove him crazy. It was a great little unique movie
Anyone notice the first couple of scenes of the film are out of order? I’ve looked everywhere and it seems like nobody notices, but the ‘opening scenes’ where Larry watches Oprah on TV and then the scene where Owen poisons mamma’s Pepsi should have been between the laundromat scene and Larry calling Beth late at night…. It’s crazy nobody notices this.
2👎? !? !? pfft *#@*** "*^* 2👎? !? !? WTF!? That movie was a riot!! Highly recommended if u didn't see it. These 2 wouldn't know what's funny if it hit them over their heads with that frying pan they liked so much.
I usually agreed with these guys, but they were wrong here. The timing was fantastic, the audience in the movie theater was laughing with belly laughs. The ending was weak, maybe it needed Mama's twin sister Owen's auntie to show up at the beach. But Billy Crystal was the perfect straight-man, and Devito was outrageous - way funnier than Lou Costello ever was. The only comedy of that era which measures-up to Throw Mama is What About Bob.
I disagree with thumbs down, I enjoyed this movie. With that being said they weren't wrong about the critiques, no pure dark comedy, bill Crystal was all over the place and Danny devito had the better performance.
I really respect both Siskel and Ebert. But there were a few times when they were way off. Maybe they were just having a bad day and it affected their appreciation of the movie. Another movie they unfairly gave thumbs down to was "Die Hard."
Siskel and Ebert are both wrong this movie a classic today very funny all 3 actors; momma, and the 2 actors... De Vito even directed the movie... is loaded with funny scenes .... loved it too bad mum was not really thowened off the train they saved her!! lol
He played it well tho and I don't blame his mom for being pissed off at him for being a lying ...wait how old was he still living at home with his mother? lol. joking . Seriously though...RIP Anne Ramsey who passed away in 1988. ...wasn't she in Goonies also ?
For me, it was not smart enough to be a dark comedy, but not fun enough to be a regular comedy. It just did not work. Hats off to Anne Ramsey though. She played her part well.
Siskel and Ebert Lied to me. May they Rest, In Peace.

This movie was a classic I love the mother she made the movie I love this movie
Two thumbs down? I'm really surprised. This movie was hilarious.
well said lol

I love this movie.

never get tired of that frying pan hit!
“You lied to me!” *twaaannnggggg*
That made me crack up lol!
Best movie reviewers, best decade of movies, maybe not all the best movies but there was always a good one in the 80s-90s. Two of a kind
Wow, I think they missed the mark on that one. "Dive!" yelled the captain through the thing.
This is one of the few episodes I remember watching. I was 9 when this came out.
"It's too damn sultry in here!"
One of those moments where Siskel and Ebert got it wrong.
I CAN HANG UP MY OWN GODDAMN SHAWL
Watching the movie now for the first time since I saw it in the theater as a 10 year old.
They're wrong about it. One of the funniest movies ever.
Lame. This was one of THE funniest movies of the '80s. I went to see it when I was 7 years old (my aunt had to sneak me in at the time!).
Love these guys
Another example of siskel amd ebert completely blowing it on a classic movie
agree 100%
You mean being stupid assholes without taste

This is one of my favorite comedies of all time. Siskel and Ebert were wrong about alot of films.
Hilarious move two thumbs up from me...
Sounds like the problem was their expectations, not the movie itself. This is a wonderful movie and they got this one wrong
I'd still like to see "100 women i'd like to pork" be published
It's a coffee table book...
I like the title ....
Ebert (RIP) resembled "Porky Pig." Does that count?
Anyone notice the first couple of scenes of the film are out of order?

This was a genius funny movie. "She's not a woman. She's the Terminator."
Pompous interlopers indeed!
The "sultry" brilliance was lost to these repellent fuddy-duddies.
2👎? !? !?

Ebert forgot that Strangers on a Train was based on a novel.
Ann ramseys performance in this was simular to darth vaders performance in the 1977 star wars film
Future Star Trek Captain Kate Mulgrew
Two thumbs down? Ok now I'm offended

ya exactly very good comments it was a great movie, funny yes there is room left to make it better ... lets do it
Billy Crystal enjoyed being called
" stretch"
during the filming of this

Maybe it wasn't supposed to be a comedy. :)
What??? Super funny movie.
Siskel and Ebert are both wrong this movie a classic today very funny all 3 actors; momma, and the 2 actors... De Vito even directed the movie... is loaded with funny scenes .... loved it too bad mum was not really thowened off the train they saved her!! lol
Funny movie....the ending kind of dragged it down.
exactly
Cousin Paddy- ha!
Watergate documentary
BS.
Two thumbs up 👍 👍
These people don’t know good material. So...
“I’m getting the hell out of here!”
Didn't billy crystal kill his wife. I'm sure he will be capable of killing someone else's mother
Wasn't bad but not that good either
I like it until they get to the train.
Perfect review. Funny moments, shitty movie.
I didn't like it either.
i found danny devitos character to be annoying someone should of threw devito from the train
thrown not threw Fix it! GN
He played it well tho and I don't blame his mom for being pissed off at him for being a lying ...wait how old was he still living at home with his mother? lol. joking . Seriously though...RIP Anne Ramsey who passed away in 1988. ...wasn't she in Goonies also ?
Mr. Erbert was too kind. This was a horrible boring movie.
This movie was horrible. There was no humor in it. It was a bad script and no jokes.
One of the worst movies I have ever seen.
Hated this movie.
