  • On the fathers day weekend of 2024, a friend and I headed off to the North-western districts of New South Wales. Our first day of travel brought us to the beautiful township of Narrabri, where we stayed the night in the Narrabri Motel & Caravan Park on the Newell Hwy (Cooma St), we chose to stay in the motel section rather than the cabins out back - still very comfortable.
What would normally take almost five hours to travel from Dorrigo took us just over 7 as we made several stops along the way to photograph and video some places of interest.
On the Sunday - our 2nd and final day, we got up early and headed off to another beautiful town to the west of Narrabri, being Wee Waa. Stopping there for more photos (and also along the way) we then headed off to go to Cuttabri. Wasn't that an adventure. Following Google maps, no, it didn't give us a bum steer, however, Google Earth's photo (from above) is somewhat outdated. I have a friend who told me of a pub in the area where his grandfather donated some farming artifacts that were on the wall in the pub - it burnt down in 2016 apparenty. The "town" supposedly consisted of buildings and houses on two sides of a crossroad - which no longer exists and most of the buildings are no longer there. Me being me, I drove the 14kms along Gwabbegar Rd and not seeing the town kept on going for a further 10kms until I entered The Pilliga. I made a U-turn and returned to the highway and tried again, this time keeping a very close eye on my surroundings knowing that persistence will pay off. 20kms down the road, still nothing so once again I returned to the highway - I should mention all along this route we had no internet signal, so I couldn't double check google earth. At the highway I thought that I should give it one more try as far as a lane that I saw, and thought maybe the town was up the lane. Nope - nothing there except for a couple of very shy emus that ran off as soon as I approached them for a photograph.
Well, you'd think I'd just give up, but no, I went back to the highway and thought maybe there is another road further down that may help. I got as far as the other end of the said laneway and noticed that I had an internet signal, so onto google earth I go. This time I looked carefully at the road and just past the righthand bend in the road was this elusive town that is supposed to exist. Well, two houses still exist and a couple of sheds and that is it - not even a crossroad there anymore. I stopped, took a couple of photos - after all, the almost two hours of driving back and forth had to give me something. This being done it was time to return home, Dorrigo for my friend and the coast for me - via Narrabri, Boggabri, Gunnedah and Tamworth.
This video is just an overview of the 1500 km's we traveled over the two days - I will add some more detailed videos to this YT page soon
