The band discusses how they each got their start playing guitar, being broke trying to make it in LA, and the process of creating their new album 'Mosaic". Видеоклипы
Other bands need to take a page from 311. This is class, talent, and soul all wrapped up nicely. Respect, boys. Thank you for all the great music.
Their positivity is by far one of their best attributes.. its second to none
Well spoken! #311💛🌍
Agreed 💯
Tim Mahoney is one of the most underrated guitarist in the world
I like him. But Ian Thornley of Big Wreck is the most underreckonized guitarist + lead singer. Also from the 90s.
So underrated… Don’t know why they weren’t bigger than they are… Their sound is iconic and original
They might not be as big as people think they could be, but they are consistent. They deliver a mind blowing show every time, the fans are loyal, and they have a sound all their own.
@@chrisparish885 Not to mention they've had the exact same 5-man lineup in the band since 1993, testament to how cool and chill these guys are
Nick Hexum is a grade A songwriter. Tim is a grade A guitar player. They bounce off of each other and the result is amazing.
Nick is a great music writer, no doubt. His writing is what drives the band forward. But lyrically, I think SA runs circles around him. There ain’t nobody out there who writes the way SA does. His lyrics are so damn unique and beautiful. All of these guys unique talents are what makes 311 so great.
mercster I couldn’t agree with you more my friend!! 😁🎤🎸
I concur!
No egos helps too. World class!
No way, Nicks lyrics are painfully cheesy. He writes some great guitar parts however.
Every member of the band is a class act. Positive, skilled, nice people. 311 is an inspiration!!!
311 is my official beach, sittin in the sun music.
Without getting "emotional" 311 is the king of relaxing/unwinding type of music. Which really should exclude super intense emotions
Met these guys in early 2000s, my band was playing Acme Underground in NYC and they were there to see Nick's brother's band play after us. Very cool guys they put nine of us on the guest list for their show the next night at the Electric factory in Philly.
He nailed it by saying that if you keep at it, after a while people will hear your unique spirit, and that’s the only way they will relate.
The Urge was so good. I can remember watching them at Mississippi Nights in the 90s like it was yesterday
Yea the urge was one of those sadly forgotten bands but all their albums are killer
They still kick out at least one show a year in STL
The solo in "Lose" is the first thing I ever learned to play on guitar and if it weren't for that song, I probably wouldn't have played guitar for the last 15 years. Thank you Guitar Center for putting this together and thank you 311 for making my life so much better.
On a side note, if you like SA's lyrics about aliens, look up Lloyd Pye and Graham Hancock and prepare to have your mind blown.
Probably my favorite solo of theirs. So choice.
“Lose” is such a heavy hitter. Great great deep cut. The vibe, the mood, the lyrics, the guitar....it’s one of their best
Lose is an incredibly underrated song, and is also the first solo I ever learned to play(Taiyed being the second)! Good to know there is another out there who shares my love of the song.
Awesome song... One of my all time favorites by them. Great riff and solo indeed! 🤙
Here five years later to second the Graham Hancock remark. Also check out Randall Carlson.
This is by far one of the best interview videos i have ever seen. The honesty of TIm and Nick coupled with the comfort and smothness of the host is intoxicating. Nothing fake, nothing blown up, tons of respect for all of the creative processes for the past 3 decades. I remember buying music, grassroots and the blue album all in one week in the 90s, what a adolecent blow torch that was!!! Thank you!!!!
Pleased to hear so many years later of Jerry's impact on Tim. Cheers to fond memories with you, Tim, in Mr. Moragues' geometry class circa 1984.
RIP Vincent Moragues (2/5/19).
So happy I got to see 311 with Incubus back in 2000. It was memorable and I still listen to both bands today!
I saw thar show too. Saw them first going back to 95/96 with no doubt
Use of time has tge best 311 solo for me
one of my all time fav 311 songs
Yessir
Agreed use of time is my fav
Good fucking song!
Love 311! My favorite punk band of all time is NOFX!!
Such good, genuine dudes! Just saw there show in Boise on the 14th of Aug, and man the amount of energy they still give off after 27 years is a testament to their greatness, their love of music and there fans! Keep on keepin' on fellas!
Aaron yes! Its so motivating amazing dudes!
That Boise show killed! Second row and my favorite 311 concert I’ve ever been to. They get better with time!
02:24 I demand a Tim Trombone solo on the next 311 album
@@noobnoob3489 I know this comment is old but lmao wtf even is this. I hope you learned how to articulate by now
@@vapid2689 ?
311 are amazing from attitude, style, music and positivity.
Nick mentions Jim Croce at 15:30. I love you for that man. My all-time favorite songwriter/musician. First music I ever got into as a kid and it has stuck with me. I mean, I cut my teeth on VH, Rush, Ozzy, Maiden and all that growing up, but Croce is THE SHIT! Nick has great taste. Kudos dude.
I love their answers. They’re just so cool. Legends
311....the soundtrack to my life....!!!! Can’t wait to see you guys in Portland at the Crystal March 5....30 yrs wow...love y’all so much...I believe in y’all’s positive Vibe
Remember rolling around Atl with Shooties Groove, 311, The Urge, chillin at hotel after party after shows waaay back mid 90’s, best times, hahaha I had Tim’s hash pipe he left in Atl, …. make sure I get that shit back next tour, that shits my favorite
Super cool to get into the musical nitty gritties behind 311's 'sound'! Thank you! Rediscovering them after 21 year hiatus. Having RUclips as a tool follow a band this go around is mind-blowing
🤟🏻🎸
It's interviews like this that make me love 311 even more. Ever since hearing the blue album & playing it non-stop for a summer I was hooked. They keep evolving w their music & get better like a fine wine. We missed you @ Summerfest 2017 guys. Make a return in 2018 👍
I could not agree with this statement more. By far my favorite band ever.
Dude...soooo chill. Don’t know what it is about these guys but they seems like such nice genuine people. Love 311!!
I absolutely LOVE everything Nick&Tim said in this interview. Love 311
Wrote that last comment right after the 20 minute mark... Needed to add something. Its awesome that Nick said Evolver was underappreciated, more namely Creatures. That song almost completely defined my life for several years. Its crazy how you remember your life by the songs you were into those days. 311 has been my favorite band for around 20 years. Maybe 18. Even if they were to stop making music today, my favorite band wouldn't change. Like to see a little more of Zach though.
Ill be one of the first grandpas in assisted living with my Soundsystem bumping 311. Hahahaha!! Good shit man. -Richard 35 years
Thanks for everything Chad, Tim, Nick, SA & P-Nut; OR... SA, Chad, P-Nut, Tim, & Nick
Doesn't matter how you put it together, its all love,
This is my first, last, and best commentary on 311.
Live Positive, Love Your Life!...
Richard Deese
Love that all have remained from the beginning. Mosaic is killer!
311 is my favorite band of all time! They’ve got everything you need in a band and a wide array of genres wrapped into one neat package album after album
Thanks, Guitar Center! This interview was classy and produced very well 🙌
I am not a big 3-11 fan, but this interview was fantastic. Great guys
First album I ever bought in my life was around 94/95 and it was the Grassroots album from 94. I kept it all these years. I tried playing it around 2014ish after I found it buried somewhere and it still played! 20 years after I bought it. They were the first real band I listened to along with Sublime. Love me some 311
Man.... I fucking love 311.
And have been down since right before blue came out.
They have consistently maintained my attention all while maintaining a never getting burnt out phase.
I've seen them in 5 states 8 cities and been to 311 day . And my left sleeve tattoo is a 311 dedication.
I've been to 100s of concerts and seen essentially every band I ever to check out, liked, loved or was nuts about. But I've never caught up with the ol'Nebraska boys.
I've met so many great artist in my heavy concert days of the past and never felt "star struck"...
But I would fucking love to just shake the hands of each cat 1 time and thank them for the absolute joy they bring to my life.
So in the off chance any of you 5 see this.
Thank you.
From Corey in Illinois.
P.s ...its my birthday and I think the entire neighborhood wants to jam some "Visit" with me... At 9 am
(They're growing to love it)
I love that Nick mentions rock n roll ralphs. Im from oc but hung out on weekends in hollywood on the strip in my teen years. (Late 80s early 90s) rock n roll ralphs and rock n roll dennys was big thing for musicians and Hollywood. If u partied in Hollywood u definitely went to both. Me and my friends did
This is a great interview really good advice as a musician thank you .
tim is the best
I loved evolver.......all of it!
Great stuff!
Tim's greatful dead inspiration clearly came out in beyond the grey sky!!! That song seemed to be a perfect mesh (to me) of 311... the reggae, "dead sound", hard jam, vocal harmony, and individuals...no I didn't forget Chad who (imo) is the cornerstone!
Cheers! 1991somehow I found you in Ohio
100% agreed on that Beyond The Gray Sky Grateful Dead comparison. Also fellow fan from Ohio here. 🐙🛸🐙 their hip-hop infused punk blended with that interstellar tropical psychedelia was a huge revelation for me growing up. Their music played an integral part in me being interested in all things heavy and or ethereal as well as ambient.
If they started in the mid 80’s dub and dancehall was still a pretty new “underground” genre. So white kids from the Midwest doing it is quite impressive. And I agree with Nick that the Clash is a huge influence. Started with punk and progressed and really brought Jamaican styles to American kids where as no other band could have done that. So props with two legends giving credit where due to another legend of a band!!!
Thanks for the memories and magic.
Influenced my life like no other. Love all u guys and Chad is a beast on drums. My favorite band of all time. Thank you for all.the good times and music. 311👍💪
Evolver is underrated, he's right
I would agree if I could find a single person that didn't FUCKING LOVE Evolver :P Up until Mosaic it reigned as their "magnum opus" to me. Now I can't decide :)
Tis all a wonderful tapestry.
Bravo 311, all the best, as you have shown.
Happy Nick himself pointed it out. Evolver is a favorite of mine. Such great - sometimes dark - energy. Evolver is a very interesting and entertaining 311 record and has stood the test of time so far.
From Choas. Anyone else?
Absolutely is. I’ll confess, I was one of those 311 fans who kinda started moving on from 311 around the time of Evolver and DTOM. If you recall, this was the time that the music scene was kinda moving in from the 311/rage/incubus sound and into emo (unfortunately). Because of that, i think a lot of fans shit on Evolver as the “coming down” of 311.
Of course, yeas later and thousands of relistens later, Evolver is a tremendous album. And DTOM is a damn good one too.
Creating music is very courageous. Love you guys.
Great original and unique band from back in the day. True musicians. Lest we forget P-Nut and he Sexton. Respect!
Tim is inspirational. Always.
YES! 311 ROCKS! Perfect new album guys
Thumbs up for "Transistor is the best"
I enjoyed the video! Keep it up!
3ll keep the music 🎶 and the funk going strong 💪 for the fans and the audience as well rock 🎸 those tunes are guitar solos with mellow vocals so that you can rock the stage again with an open crowd to see you guys play so be safe and careful with this virus out there and family's close to you and with time I like to see you perform very soon keep the music 🎶 flowing through you rock on 🤘
My boys!! We love you 311!
Evolver is one of the best records ever made. It helps me remember myself in the times I'm lead to forget.
There are some niiice guitars in frame here... Pleasant scenery 🙂!
Lmao I love how they start to laugh in the beginning cause they know they messed up a part
Frank Zappa would have approved
This is my band always
I've watched this video a million times but the way miT looks around at 2:51 when he says he still likes trombone is so funny. Like he's making sure everyone heard for some reason lol
And the way he says dub is great too
If I was ever to get a good 6 string, I'd love a copy of Tim's PRS. That Koa top is killer! Please come to Canada!!!
I've actually spent a lot of time with 311 interviews, they're way back in my world these days. I feel like this is one of the better interviews I've seen, maybe because the questions are different. In a lot of the spots, it seems like Nick gets a lot of the attention. In this, it seemed like he let off the reigns a bit. Perhaps it was because they had guitars in their hand, or maybe it was the interviewer, but this seemed like a really natural conversation. Appreciated this GC!!!!!!
Andrew DelCid I’ve seen this so many times lol it’s like a good conversation, when it’s done you can’t believe how fast 30+ minutes went by
Most interviews I see with musicians that actually talk about the craftsmanship of the music and the artistry that surrounds it tend to bring musicians out of their shell because that’s the reason they started playing in the first place...to live and breathe music, not talk about “what are your thoughts on the Europe tour so far?”
Interviews like these are great conversations, instead of the usual inane questions bands get like “which one of you guys sleeps in the latest?”
beyond the grey sky def is loved
percussion jamz That one has a certain feel for sure.
I love Tim so much.
I love all five of them.
Me too :-) My admiration comes in waves, sometimes I'm like "God damn Nick is a wicked songwriter", the next month I'm blown away by P-Nut. I'm a guitar guy, so Tim really impresses me.
Personally, I'm a Hexum guy.
Tim's guitar is awesome....
Los amo
That interview was dope!!!
My favorite band ever !!!
Discovered the 311 crew live, opening for Oingo Boingo in Seattle back in '94. I was there for Boingo, but the Nebraska boys' energy and power onstage was unmistakable. Went out the next day and picked up CD copies of Music and Grassroots, and have been preaching the gospel ever since. Permanently relocated to Europe around the same time "311 Day" was born in N'Awlins, so I've been vicariously enjoying the fun from afar these last twenty years or so. Hard to believe they're already 30 years in at the time I'm posting this homage here, having just watched the "30 Years of 311" documentary with the wife last night here on YT. Never would have guessed -- way back in '94 -- that they'd be chasing U2 for longest extant band comprised of original members. Keep up the good work, boys...
First interview I've watched of these two... I just care about the music the four of them make when they get together. BUT,... since i did watch this one, look at Tim just before the 20 minute marker. That's the look of ideas. What a great band. 311 Rocks!!! Mostly Red but White & Blue Too!
5....Chad, Nick, SA, PNut, Tim
Great interview !
Mosaic freaking rocks.
"Pretty close!"
The Clash, NOFX, Jim Croce, Grateful Dead.
It all makes sense now
PRS makes one gorgeous instrument. Wow.
Here celebrating their 32nd year together!
I guess I hadn't realized what a guitar player Nick Hexum is. He knows his shit.
Evolver is def underrated. Its pretty solid from start to finish.
Melhor banda do Mundo urrra 311 forever
Tighten for the tour from the recording sessions..........,,
That Gibby 335 is super nice. I want one of those and not some crappy re-issue.
They’re all such lovely men.
Rock Hall Inductees 2022, make it happen Jann.
Steve Buscemi is so talented, damn
Ugh I used to have a nasty crush on Nick Hexum!!!Saw him twice in Pensacola fl!😍
Tim wore bad braains t shirt aat hampton beech concert!!!
good stuff!!!!
tim has got some city miles on him
what a band.
Grassroots and the blue album are legendary!
So is Transistor
Music and Soundsystem are great as well.
Pretty much everything up to and including From Chaos is legend status.
The urge. Love them. St. Louis own
All mixed up off of down is being played by my band the big happy🔥
Shout out to the Urge!!
Beautiful disaster is the jam
Yes!
“What’s your favorite guitarist under 30 out there right now.” (Crickets).
Had to chuckle at that response:). not to diss on the younger generation, but it’s pretty clear that Nick and Tim aren’t really finding a lot of new guitar-driven music out there that is knocking their socks off.
Mahoney is the Malcolm Young of 311💯
I wonder why Hexum doesn’t have a PRS sponsorship. Tim has been their OG ambassador for decades.
you could tell they didn’t want to stop at the end of Too Late
Big agree on Evolver being underrated.
anyone else waiting for Tim to begin playing his damn guitar at 11:45 actually he never played apart from the beginning and beautiful disaster solo unplugged...
nick is not ok, and still a consummate gentleman! class act.
Played wild fire at the beginning
The Munching Birch Tree Of The Southern Ports lol pretty close
Tim’s face at 0:28 🤣
Who else is goin to da 311 concert Tuesday the 21st??
I didnt know Steve Bruschemi played guitar
Adam Campbell he also plays bass for the Lone Rangers
I hadda look twice! 😅 youre messed up dude 😁
Lmao..... Tim does resemble Bushemi!!
@@himynameisangel1 Now, how you gonna pluralize Lone Ranger?
Don't Be Silly you’re not exactly Lone
