When I was in high school in the early 2000s the 311 concert every summer was the party of the year! My friends and I would all go, party in the parking lot, and then stumble in and jam out. Those were the good old days man.
I saw 311, Monster Magnet and ….. f”ing Korn at the Trocadero theater (small venue in Philly) years ago and is still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Growing up this was hands down my favorite band, I still have every single CD. They’re CDs are the type that you can put them on and let them run, every song is good. They will always hold a spot in my music catalog.
The first 311 song I ever heard was 'Visit' from the Music album and it floored me! I saw them on the Grassroots tour in a small club with KORN as the opening act and 311 was AMAZING! I've seen them a few more times since then and the never disappoint! I love their records but live is where they really shine!
I've loved 311 since I was in the 6th grade. They are still jamming and coming out with a new album here in 2024. This video is very thorough and I love it. Would love to see you continue from the end of this video into current times.
I have a hypothesis that 311 achieved the maximum success and fame you can have in the entertainment industry without selling your soul, doing the dark stuff, being "handled" etc. I wish I could ask them about it but one imagines that talking about that stuff would really draw attacks from "the system'.
I bought the 311 titled album(aka the Blue Album) right after Down hit the radio and MTV, when I was like 7/8. I heard “Do You Right” on a sampler that my babysitter gave me because she worked at a record shop. At the same time, I was really getting into playing drums. I listened to the album nonstop just religiously, and Chad’s drumming absolutely hypnotized me. I really credit my determination to becoming a skilled drummer to him. The production on that album is just so unbelievably fucking great, the sound of his kit just melted my young little mind haha. Those god damn good times, I’d do anything to get the 90s back!
311 is a timeless treasure of talent and head-bobbin' grooves, since "All Mixed Up" came out for me in highschool. Their drummer, Chad Sexton, was and still is my ultimate influence on playing the drums. Even after I graduated with a BA in percussion performance in 2005, to this day, at age 45 and not playing in any bands, they are still my #1 band to listen and play along with. Sadly, even though i'll never come to the level of Sexton, I still remember, fondly, of how awestruck I was with his grooves in the band, as a collective.
My first 311 show was with Phunk Junkees at a tiny ass venue in Pensacola, FL called the Night Owl in 94’. I lived in Mobile,AL. Since then, I’ve seen them play over a dozen times throughout the US with my last 311 show being at the Red Rocks. Point being, NEVER seen a bad 311 show. They genuinely love their fanbase, play to their fanbase, and absolutely kill it live 24/7/365.
@@littlecozettescrew6818 those guys killed it with the rap/rock/soul thing in the mid 90s. Saw them twice back in the day. They set the tone, along with 311 and Shootyz Groove. Way before Limp Bizcuit did there thing. Good times back then.
Excellent content! Not easy staying around for 30+ years with original lineup (I believe the 4th longest-lasting band to do so, only behind U2, Radiohead, and De La Soul before Trugoy's passing). Aside from several bumps along the road, the boys are now stronger than ever. The new album Full Bloom will be a total banger!
Never really was into the band. I remember when they first came on the scene. But about... 15 years ago i want to say ? I saw them Live and they were really really good. All that over produced studio shit was gone and it was a talented band with a unique vibe onstage. Good stuff.
Favorite band of all time. Discovered them in 95 when I was 10 years old, and was hooked ever since. They’re reason I became a musician and maintained a diverse, eclectic sound. Stay positive everyone!
I was 13/14 when 311's blue album came out. Used to listen to it non-stop in 9th grade. Transistor was equally awesome. I saw their NPR small desk concert video from back in March, it was nice to see one of the bands from my youth with all members still alive and more importantly in good health, having a good time.
I saw them in perform in San Diego in the mid-90’s and bought the CD of their first album. The song ‘Visit’ has a special place in my heart. Didn’t know they were from Nebraska as they have a definite SoCal vibe.
In 1995, my parents took all my cds away. I was 14. They found profanity in lyrics. The deal was they would replace 1 cd a week. 311 blue album was my first "replacement" cd. Im 41 now. Theyve been my favorite band ever since
They took away the CDs because of profanity and the first replacement they gave you was 311's blue album? Did they not actually listen to it first? Or even read the track list? It feels like the song "Guns Are For Pussies" would have been a red flag for them.
@chriswhinery925 that actually a thing lol. My Pop read the lyrics and talked about that song specifically. But the call was that the song had(s) a positive message so I got to keep it. "Purpose" made me go get the older albums later :)
I'm a 40 yr diehard punk rock fan. That doesn't mean I can't recognize and appreciate real musical talent. These guys had chops. P-Nut is a legit top flight bassist. His grooves are filthy.
311 first entered my brain as a sophomore in high school in 1992 1993 when rumors of them being affiliated with the KKK were swirling. Which to be honest, is why I first gave them a listen 😀
How amazing to see a documentary video on 311, they don't get covered nearly enough. All time favorite band. I know tons about them but this video still had details i wasn't aware of! The 90s had so much incredible alt rock that 311 are often forgotten. But they were among the best to do a multi-genre crossover that sounded genuine and not half-assed. Also, i think Transistor is among the best albums of their era. Everything they did up to 2003 was awesome though.
311 is like one of those bands that stand on their own 2 feet like Sublime or Gorrilaz. Everytime I listen to a 311 song I gotta follow it with a Stone temple pilots song I don't know why those 2 bands music compliments each other almost like listening to The Stones after an Eagles song 😊
Saw them in Lawrence, KS in The Bottleneck bar in 1993. Got in with a fake ID, danced with no abandon and kissed a girl I had a big crush on. We all thought they were from Orange County or something. Anyway, they brought the house down and I had one of best night of my young life.
3🤘🏼 Love them, they got me through a lot over the past 3 decades. Mahalo nui loa for this, I really appreciate it and they deserve so much more recognition for their contributions to modern music. Aloha.
Love 311. Their earliest albums “Music” and “Grassroots” are totally great and classic albums! I’ve enjoyed all of their albums but those two albums are my favorites from their catalogue. Their self titled album was very good too.
I have been a fan since the 90s, and it is true, their sound is unique and would not be the same if one member was replaced. Just saw them at Red Rocks and they still deliver the goods, despite the setlist being a nostalgia tour of hits
when i had my very own first electric guitar, amp and multi-effects pedal, 311 was one of my most practiced songs. Now i'm 36 and will continue to love their songs.
I’ve been listening to 311 since I was a kid. I was born the year of the blue album and my parents would listen to them pretty often so they became my favorite. So much so that when I was 5 years old my nickname was SA. They were my first concert when I was 8 and it’s an experience I’ll always remember. A few years ago my dad got Nick Hexum to wish me a happy 26th birthday through Cameo. His message was very wholesome and he even sang my favorite song which is Come Original. I still have the video in my phone to this day. I feel very thankful for my mom and dad introducing me to these guys. 311 for life ❤
Saw them on 311 day years ago at the MGM Grand. They played for several hours. I had to pee, but didn’t want to risk missing one of my favorite songs. Then Amber came on, and I thought “Now’s the time!” There were so many people in the bathroom, lol! Everyone was laughing, saying that Amber sucks. Keep in mind, I don’t hate the song, but that’s the choice I made.
Couple weeks ago I attended my 10th 311 show .....just a great live band. 10 rows from the stage for $73. They will not rob you. Anytime they come to Charlotte, I will be there.
Kudos, as there's lots of ground to cover, and this is a pretty thorough examination of the early days - though certainly only a prologue, given the band has never broken and continues touring and putting out records to this day, 35 years on. Their second album, Grassroots, the one that was basically self-recorded in their Van Nuys crash pad, still remains a favorite.
One of my most favorite concerts was 311 at a small club in Nashville called 328 performance hall in the late 90s. I was lucky enough to go to 311 day one year (I think 2004) in New Orleans. These guys never disappoint live.
I love Soundsytem too. But there had to have been an album that left you unfulfilled, for me it was Don’t Tread On Me. Or whatever the album with that single on it. I’ve found a new love for them though. They just hit a rut for second there. Evolver was my last Classic 311 Album
@@ScinterScoldem-pq9ew it’s funny you say that. Evolved was my meh 🫤 album, but I’ll still listen to creatures, beyond the gray sky, and a few more. Don’t Tread on me is a great summer album. Frolic, speak easy, whiskey & wine are peak 311 imo.
Hell yeah, brother. More 311 videos for sure!! Their work ethic and brand of positivity is something to be celebrated. Not to mention, their live shows are ELECTRIC. They deserve all the praise they receive and more in my opinion. The best shows. The best fans. The best music. The best BAND. "Stay positive, and love your life."
Found their music in my teens at 15.... I'm 36 now and I have always had their music on tape, on mp3 players and on all my fones throughout the years... always in my ear....
Yeah dude I'm a fan of theirs but that's not true. When I saw them in early 2010s in multiple arenas the entire middle section of the amphitheaters plural theatresssss would be empty. Theve bounced back and forth between opener and headliner in recent years, they canceled some overseas shows this year and have never been beyond an amphitheater size band and I've never had a problem getting a ticket to any of the many shows I've attended of theirs going back to 96 I've never been told they were sold out so this is not exactly true
I saw 311 3x before the blue album, before they blew up. Saw them over 12x all together. But! After the blue albulm broke, went to see them in Detroit, this time at the state theater . We were in general admission, as usual. 311 opened with DOWN... My God, all you saw were bodies flying everywhere, the crowd went nuts. We actually had to go stand on the sides. I truly grew up with 311... from 21 years old up. I lost myself a few years in life, like 10 total and it was 311 helped me back by rediscovering them & "Beyond the Grey sky". I'll always be a partner the 311 Familia ❤
311 changed the music landscape in 95 and helped open the door for bands like No Doubt and Incubus. Also led for good or bad to the late 90s ska revival. Looking forward to part 2!
My favorite band of all time. They have a catalog that puts many of the mainstream so called all time great bands to shame. And the core members have stayed together for damn near 40 years now!🤘🏻👽🎸🥁
Yessss finally a 311 video. Been listening to them a lot lately. Really like their guitar tone a lot especially on their Blue Album 🤘. I jam out to that album a lot
I think it’s time for me to publicly apologize for the rumors I (may have) started about the 311-KKK connection. I started listening to 311 in 94. Instantly became a huge fan and was very active on the old fan “hot line” (buy the way, is that still active?). My family members would often give me a hard time for listening to 311 because of the “KKK connection. You see, there was a bar in the neighboring town (Pittsburg, KS) called the “311 Bar & Grill”. The local rumor was it was a KKK hang out. To be clear I don’t believe this to be true as it was simply the address of the bar. I left a message on the hotline joking about how my family thought there was a connection. I would always leave messages under the name Izzy (not my real name) from Kansas. After that every week people would leave messages commenting on this alleged connection. I remember telling my friends “people are commenting on the message I left!” Remember the internet wasn’t what it is today and for a small town kid it was neat. Not long after that I remember hearing on MTV News that 311 shirts were being banned in schools in Nebraska. I remember thinking “that sucks. I guess my family wasn’t the only ones confused about the connection.” Then, the Enlarged To Show Detail VHS came out. Watching it with my friends for the first time they get to the interview with Nick were they ask about the rumors. He said “I think it was started by some dork in Kansas.” The room got quite and my friends all stared at my jaws dropped. “Sh*t! I think that might be me!” I felt horrible about it and this was not my intention. So to the band and fans I truly apologize. Sincerely, Dork from Kansas.
The Blue album had come out was taking the alternative radio Waves by storm. But that wasn't the album that got me into them. I thought they were alright. "Down" was an okay song I thought. So my friend handed me a tape one day and said "I know you're not really into this band. But go home and put this tape on." So I did. It was 311 's first album "Music". I was literally blown away. I'd never heard anybody sound like that in my entire life. That album and Grassroots are still two of my favorite albums of all time. Both those albums are nearly perfect straight through just incredible musicianship. I learned how to play drums to those albums. They hold a special place in my heart. I've seen 311 probably 13-44 times over the years. I've met them. They are some of the nicest coolest most down-to-earth guys you'll l ever meet in your life. I was wearing a Phish shirt and Tim Mahoney commented on it and told me how much he loved them and I thought that that was like the coolest thing ever as an 18 year old 😂😂

When I was in high school in the early 2000s the 311 concert every summer was the party of the year! My friends and I would all go, party in the parking lot, and then stumble in and jam out. Those were the good old days man.
Same yo!!!!! My seeing 311 Live over and over with group of friends days were very late 90’s to mid 2000’s
311 has been part of my middle school days. I still listen to them. Definitely great guys all around and great music.
i seen them twice!! the only band ill never get tired of seeing live!! Down was my intro into them and they just have so many hits from there!!!
I saw 311, Monster Magnet and ….. f”ing Korn at the Trocadero theater (small venue in Philly) years ago and is still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
First concert I ever saw was 311. They were great!
@@lee-danielsSounds like a badass night! 🤟🤪🤘
Try Electric Callboy
Growing up this was hands down my favorite band, I still have every single CD. They’re CDs are the type that you can put them on and let them run, every song is good. They will always hold a spot in my music catalog.
311 was my first concert in Sep. 1997 - Lakeland Florida. I've seen them 12 or 13 times- life long fan here!! 🎉👽
The first 311 song I ever heard was 'Visit' from the Music album and it floored me! I saw them on the Grassroots tour in a small club with KORN as the opening act and 311 was AMAZING! I've seen them a few more times since then and the never disappoint! I love their records but live is where they really shine!
Music is a great album. Unity and Hydroponic why do I remember this? 😂 After RHCP lost Frusciante, 311 and Sublime was all I listened to
my favorite band!! they do not get the credit they deserve tbh
Same, best band
I've loved 311 since I was in the 6th grade. They are still jamming and coming out with a new album here in 2024. This video is very thorough and I love it. Would love to see you continue from the end of this video into current times.
I didn't know I needed a 311 vid this bad!! There's not enough docs on 311...such an underrated band. One of the absolute best bands.
I listen to 311 to this day. Great vibe and beautiful melodies
Been into them for almost 20 years, but I'm not much of a lore person so I never knew the blue album was recorded live.
Good stuff.
A lot of records are. They record a very good live performance in a studio and then most likely still do overdubs if they need to.
I still jam 311 all the time. It’s just great upbeat music that makes me happy with a hint of nostalgia.
Can't wait for the 311 Cruise😎🏝
This needs part 2 and 3
yes sir!
I have a hypothesis that 311 achieved the maximum success and fame you can have in the entertainment industry without selling your soul, doing the dark stuff, being "handled" etc. I wish I could ask them about it but one imagines that talking about that stuff would really draw attacks from "the system'.
I never got a full appreciation for them until I listened to “music” and “grassroots” all the way through
311 was one of the bands that got me through my youth without throwing in the towel on life.
Yup
@nicholaschupka4150 Me too! My mind tends to go to dark places, and there was always a 311 song I could relate to my mood or would lift my spirits.
Best live shows I've been to were 311 shows.
I’ve loved 311 since the blue album launch. Gonna see them this summer! First time since from chaos tour.
Many fond high school memories of cranking 311 in my headphones stoned out of my mind.
The song "Electricity" off of Transistor is a direct response to the racist accusations.
I used to love the Phunk Junkees!
@@littlecozettescrew6818 those guys killed it with the rap/rock/soul thing in the mid 90s. Saw them twice back in the day. They set the tone, along with 311 and Shootyz Groove. Way before Limp Bizcuit did there thing. Good times back then.
@@jonathangreen7398 Yea. Rehab and Kotton Mouth Kings just came through town last week, but I didn’t make it to the show this time :(
Excellent content!
Good stuff.
You did a great job with this one. Can’t wait for the full history. I’d love to know more about their mindset during the making of Evolver.
It’ll be a long one for sure…
Transistor is my favorite but evolver is 100% the most underrated.
Love 311. Their albums still get better and better .
True. And Chad Sexton is a phenomenal drummer.
I remember listening to these guy a lot when I was in Jr High a lot.
One of my all time favorite bands and you did them justice! Your style is thorough and smooth.
"Transistor" is such a fantastic album. Go for a drive at night during the summer time with your windows down with this as your soundtrack 👍
3🤘🏼
Love them, they got me through a lot over the past 3 decades. Mahalo nui loa for this, I really appreciate it and they deserve so much more recognition for their contributions to modern music.
Aloha.
This group has so much soul and gets to my core. Regardless of the song. Thank You!
Wholly under appreciated band back in the 90's.
Very happy to have introduced the next generation to them.
311 for life ❤
I love 311 and also the urge which a lot of people don’t really know about.
My Boys!!! Thank you RNRTrueStories! I really appreciate it!
you're welcome!
15:56 man you did your research. If anyone knows 311's music it's that it is positive. Im really glad you slipped this in here.
Couple weeks ago I attended my 10th 311 show .....just a great live band.
10 rows from the stage for $73. They will not rob you.
Anytime they come to Charlotte, I will be there.
Thanks!
Thank you!
All the girls I had crushes on really liked them.
I wasn’t really a fan but I’ve always liked beautiful disaster, it’s a great song.
"Bobby you be quiet out there!"
One of my most favorite concerts was 311 at a small club in Nashville called 328 performance hall in the late 90s. I was lucky enough to go to 311 day one year (I think 2004) in New Orleans. These guys never disappoint live.
I’ve seen 311 multiple times in Philly. They always have great pattering bands: Papa Roach, Matisyahu, Snoop, Sublime with Rome, etc.
What a band. One of my favorites. Something for everyone! Been constantly listening since 1996. ❤
Awesome episode, I learned a lot! Yeah, I remember a dude at work around Y2k trying to tell me the 3 k's rumor and I was like "BS rumor, whatever bro"
One of my favorite bands of all time. I remember being in 7th grade when Sound System came out, and it blew me away. always in heavy rotation.
@@ScinterScoldem-pq9ew give India Ink and daisy cutter a try from Uplifter. Sunset in July from universal pulse is amazing.
@@zkillian2002 I’ll have to go back then…
Nebraska? These guy are the most Cali-coded band ever. that's crazy
Loved them for 30 years !!!
“The Self Titled” Album & “Transistor” still consistently are played in my house. 🖤🎼🤘🏻
Best thing to come out of Nebraska next to corn
Hell yeah, brother. More 311 videos for sure!!
Their work ethic and brand of positivity is something to be celebrated. Not to mention, their live shows are ELECTRIC. They deserve all the praise they receive and more in my opinion.
The best shows. The best fans. The best music. The best BAND.
"Stay positive, and love your life."
Found their music in my teens at 15.... I'm 36 now and I have always had their music on tape, on mp3 players and on all my fones throughout the years... always in my ear....
311 has been selling out shows for 30 years.... there is a reason. GREAT live. A non fan will become a fan by seeing them live.
And the core members have stayed together for damn near 40 years now!🤘🏻👽🎸🥁
Yes!!!! I’ve been wanting a 311 video forever. I kept recommending them. My fav band
love your channel and content. appreciate it. these things are extremely important to me.
Thanks!
