- 5 years ago today, on 9th August 2016, we welcomed the first No Man's Sky travellers into the vast universe that our tiny team had created. 16 updates later and we reflect on the epic journey we and our ever-growing community have been on and give a hint to what the 17th update has in store. A video game developer/publisher does not need to nickel and dime their community in order to give them quality content. Imagine that. More players need to pay attention to HG and demand better from other companies.
@@TheCybercoco The moment when HG introduced the "premium" currency without microtransactions is what particularly floored me. Literally any other game would have Quicksilver as a currency purchasable through microtransactions, but HG just put the humble NPC in their with the simple goal to give players more customization. I was so confused, yet happy.
You really outdid yourselves with this game. This is literally historically noteworthy.

Hey guys, hear me out. I wanted to suggest something... What if we just drop that part when we bring up that something that happened sometime ago maybe in this or even maybe in parallel timeline, that something wasn't exactly something and yada yada. To show our honest appreciation and express our gratitude. I think Hello Games are awesome and always were.
If you told someone 5 years ago all this game would achieve, they wouldn't have believed you. Amazing work from the Hello Games team, keep continuing the journey.

It's the promise that most people ignored. They always said it would be an ongoing thing akin to Minecraft, but sadly too many people latched onto other things to care. I'm so happy that HG persevered through the hate and turned it into the game they wanted to make.

@@sigmamale6128 @Bean Lord they've released way more than what was initially promised, all for free, without any profit incentive. Plenty of companies have fucked up a game and none have made a comeback like NMS. They could have easily taken all the profit from launch and lived lives of luxury.
This small indie dev studio has experienced the lowest lows and highest highs that an indie studio (and even many AAA studios) could possibly experience. What a journey.
Yeah, most people don't release unplayable, broken games and lie about everything in them. It's good that other studios don't sink as low as these criminals.
@@rodentRoundup Sure, that happened, but they redeemed themselves long ago and are continuously updating. They released updates shortly after launching a broken messy game and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future as of now. Calling them criminals is a bit of a heavy overstatement, and it seems 95% of everybody else disagrees with that critical take based on current reviews and feedback over the past few years since 2018. Hell, they redeemed themselves back in 2019 when Beyond launched.

The V3 pass was so hard to get, but finally did it. Have not played the game much since the Next update released as it is for me totally the opposite of the game purpose, but this video makes me want to play again.
I must be one of the few who enjoyed NMS from launch. The passion and dedication was tangible back then, it oozed from this nervous thin guy, thrown into the spotlight on Sonys E3 stage, and is at the core of its success 5 years later, with an amazing team delivering value again and again and again, and a wholesome community going above and beyond to help their peers enjoy this gem and feel right at home.
Thank you HG. For your passion, your dedication, your willingness to share your vision with us, and most importantly, for your perseverance in the face of unsurmountable hostility. Thank you for sticking with us.
Been with this game ever since the first trailer dropped and even bought it on release, and as you can imagine I was pretty upset but I never ended up returning it and thank god I did because this game has exceeded all my expectations. Excited to see what this next update Frontiers has in store!

It's been a great 5 years, can't wait to see what you've got in store with Frontiers and beyond.
It's been a WILD RIDE to get to this point, but I've been a fan since Day One, despite all the people who bashed the game because they didn't think it did what they expected it to do, instead of just realizing how amazing what was delivered. This game set new expectations for all open-world games that followed, and never ceases to amaze me every time I go play it... which I always want to do after seeing a new trailer. My last 2 1/2+ years have mostly been banging my head against the APEX Legends wall, but have interjected a few sessions of No Man's Sky in there too. This game will always be my go-to game if I have nothing else play, and just need a beautiful distraction. Thanks for what you guys have created, and CONTINUE to create. I for one, think it has been amazing!

I can't believe how amazing this game has become over the years. Every time I hear about it now, there's a new amazing update that just brings me back in. I love No Man's Sky.
I was there from the very start, one of the first travelers to step foot in this multiverse, on my first frozen planet to the wonderful synthetic music. The journey never ended, even tho I took brakes from it.
A time has come for the journey to continue.

I’ll be honestly. I never really got into NMS at launch. It felt too tedious and maybe I just didn’t understand it. It wasn’t until lockdown that I gave it another chance and truly started to become more immersed into it. Im so glad I did. Since then, I’ve put at least 40+ in the game and beat the multiple endings. Now I just tend to my base, explore planets, and play missions with other players. It is such a fantastic and breathtaking game. It definitely is one of my favorite games of all time now. If you would’ve asked me a year ago, I would’ve dismissed the claim. Thank you for keeping this game alive with updates often. I know it’s been 5 years but it still feels new to me and I’m glad the community is still alive and just as eager for this next update!

From someone who preordered the game back in 2016 and was heavily dissapointed with the game initially:
THANK YOU, for sticking with the game and this community. Now in retrospect there were a lot of factors that went into the game initial failed launch, but instead of running away with the money and saving yourselves the trouble of interacting with a community that was heavily weighed against you, you actually continued to develop the game.
Nobody would have expected you to continue working on a title that had raised so much bad PR at launch, but you overcame the odds, and made the community swing on your side not by cheap tricks and dumb marketing, but by listening to what we had to say and focusing on the biggest issues first.
Im absolutely amazed by how much this game has evolved throughout the years, far surpassing the original goal by offering free DLC, graphical upgrades and even VR.
I think I speak for most people when I say that I dont take these things for granted, it shows that your love and passion for the game is genuine.
Keep going with these amazing updates and know that all your work and passion is appreciated.

I still remember launch night, waiting for the PS4 countdown to get to zero, and then playing the game for the first time. That building anticipation has for me preceded every new update, and no game has had that effect on me before. Thank you Hello Games for continuing to inspire and delight :D
In those 5 years, players have experienced a journey that even in NMS itself can never be recreated again, watching as the universe literally evolved piece by piece, the only refuge from the storm of updates in my capital ship amongst the stars as a proud starship Captain, to this day.

I've watched this game grow up so much. Its become something better then i could've possibly imagined. And i cant wait to see where it will go next! Thank you so much for not giving up on this legendary game.
Never before, and never again will we see this kind of dedication from a studio of any size on any title, especially one as small as Hello Games. This is history in the making.
Congrats on 5 years! You guys truly out did yourselves. This game has an amazing future because you didn’t give up on it.
I hope a future update could add cities to explore either full of life or completely abandoned and abandoned cities you could rebuild and add settlers to your new city. That’s an idea for a future update.

I want fully customizable ships using all the random pieces they're currently built of that are attainable through content and faction ratings. Paint jobs. Decals. Etc. They already basically have all this already with the planetary vehicles. The random pieces for ships already exist in the database. I dont think it would be over the top to achieve.

Watching through old interviews, its interesting how differently they come across now that we know it wasn't a hit and run release and that Hello Games really did intend to add the long list of missing features (and I think most of them have been added now).
Hi Guys congrats for those 5 years!, You guys are an Inspiration, I've purchased this game from the start (pre-release) and besides its bumpy start, I never give up on it, as I loved your idea of what No Man's Sky bring to us. Now you not only redeem yourself but make other big companies look at you as your fan base grew again, due to your diligence on making the things right... and all for free this is something you don't see everyday and you guys deserve a big thanks from community by not let us down... to keep dreaming on this fantastic world you created... I was blow away when you released the VR support and this one of my favorite games to play on VR. One of the most interesting games I have ever played, appreciate the fact that you update the game both play and storyline, hopefully this will be the game that will be the model for the rest to keep up with, I've only had it since NEXT, when it was available for xbox, but it has been a exciting experience for me, love the game, great job

This is why I always believe that when a developer is trying to save/improve their game that failed at launch, we should give them a chance.
Who knows what the game you were let down by could turn into if you support the game getting these free updates.

Yeah, but.. I don't think it should become a more common practice just because Hello Games turned around their game. Developers ought to take a lesson from this, yes, from the possibility that a game can be turned around, but even more so about launching their game in a proper, playable, and complete state.
What Hello Games did with NMS until now is nothing short of remarkable, but... we should'nt have to suffer any more No Man's Sky launch type situations.

Loved it since day one, the updates have been the icing on the cake! I've bought it for three different platforms thus far, and I'm currently playing it on the Series X!

No Man's Sky is a prime example of a live service game that actually fulfils every single promise, gone far beyond those promises, and added in more than was ever promised in the beginning. Best of all, these have been free updates.
This studio has garnered enough trust from the community for their 5 years of effort and commitment.

Since I first bought this game I never understood where all the hate was coming from, every update made was making my favorite game better and better, im still glad I bought this game in the store instead of something else, cheers to the Hello Games Team!
This game has been one hell of a journey, I'm so glad I decided to stick with this game and play every update that has come out for this game since launch, can't wait to see what the next update has in store! :)
Combat, guilds, conquering planets/systems, and new planets would be insane.
Oh man this actually made me emotional. Being there the whole time from before the game came out, this brought on so many memories. This 5 year journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions, from the clusterf*ck that were the few months following release (and the various identity crisis of the NMS reddit) to the masterpiece move that was Waking Titan (should've been mentioned in this trailer imo) and the progressively unified community around this game, and the engoodening of the game itself. Couple that with one of 65daysofstatic's best songs, a band that I saw live and got hooked on thanks to No Man's Sky and it made this one hell of a trip down memory lane. Thank you for this game, I've loved the journey, the rollercoaster and being part of this amazing community. Can't wait for the Frontiers!
I got no mans sky on Christmas 2020, my best friend got me into it and I'm so glad he did. I love this game and how far it's come. Keep up the great work. All hail atlas!

After 5 years and a couple base wipes, I'm so close to the center. But then I chose to explore directly UP, on the galactic map and found totally new planet types. Gosh, a gift that keeps on giving!
