The History of Misquamicut Beach
The area now known as Misquamicut Beach wasn’t always so! Up until the early 1900s, the area was formally known as Pleasant View, RI. The majority of the beach area was owned by the Indians. In the 1890s, settlers purchased the beach area property from Sosoa, a Montauk Indian chief. It was then that the development of the beach area began.
The Pleasant View name stuck around until 1928, when it was officially changed to Misquamicut. Misquamicut is an Indian word which means “red salmon at this place.”
The hurricane of 1938 brought about some major changes to the physical look and shape of the beach area.
Misquamicut State Beach is one of the state’s most popular beach destinations in RI, with over a half mile of beach front.
The surrounding area also offers many local attractions for children.
The updated, modern pavilion includes many new features including rails, outside showers, a tower, and composting toilets.
Misquamicut Beach does fill to capacity during sunny summer weekends, so plan on getting there early if the weather is hot!

We stayed at the Pleasant View every summer for several years, always with a balcony facing the ocean, 2nd floor. We would walk over to the Andrea every morning for their breakfast buffet and spend the day on the beach. Sleeping with the ocean breeze and sound is wonderful, and spending time on the private balcony away from the crowd was just perfect.

I have lived in RI since 1991, and when we first moved here we lived in Charlestown, and later I lived in Westerly. Such a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing this.

I stayed at the Sandy Shore Motel 2 weeks or so before you shot this video. It had mixed reviews but I loved the place. Being lulled to sleep by the ocean right outside my bedroom window is an experience I wish I could have all the time.
Isn’t that the truth! I always feel so much better after leaving Misquamicut. Not sure about the summer tho.. sure it gets loud lol

Im the youngest of 5 kids and for about 10 years my parents would take me every year for a week at Pleasant View Inn. Loved it!
I've stayed poolside before but nothing beats the oceanside balconies and sleeping with the sliders open listening to the waves.
Must be amazing looks like a cool place!

I wore a T-shirt that said Misquamicut Beach at the gym and someone asked me if I was from there or been there and I said no, I bought the shirt from Goodwill.
Really nice video! Quick question. Is buying the season pass necessary to get into the beach? Coming from NY and going to pass through Rhode island
Oh wonderful have a blast! Not at all. Just have to pay to park in many dif parking lots around. Price prob depends on the day of the week. Think we paid 40 dollars for the day

How old are your children? Was there enough to entertain them
Hi Trudy! They are adults now and only came to visit for the day. They are 22 and 24. When they were younger they loved it. We never stayed here for a vacation as a family only did day trips. There seems to be a lot to do tho if you like beach and water activities 😊
Thanks for showing us around. I haven't been to that beach in probably 20 years, but I'm planning on making it a weekend trip this summer. Looking at the comments, looks like Pleasant View Inn is a great place to possibly stay at!
