Reach really did have some sick characters. we only spent a few missions with em vs the dozens w chief/cortana/johnson etc, but they're so iconic. ik Reach is loved but wish it was talked about more in general gaming communities. its just so solid, especially as a spinoff.
For the people wondering how he can even see after carving into his helmet, the VISOR of a Spartan's helmet acts as a camera for the Spartan to see out of, and it takes a lot more than simple carving to actually do any significant damage. Even with helmets like GUNGNIR, which has an extremely small VISOR, you can see perfectly fine, while having more stealth capabilities due to less VISOR surface area for light to reflect off of.
Think how they do it in titanfall, where you get into the robot and only see the inner side but then the screens make it so you are essentially seeing right through the front using cameras.

The Elites weren't stupid by any means, they knew that any stripe of Spartan was not good news to encounter, and acted accordingly. A few Elites even harbored a begrudging respect for the Spartans, recognizing their abilities as soldiers and warriors. To lesser degrees, this even extended to ODSTs, or "small demons". The Elites generally respected battlefield excellence regardless of where it originates, and fought largely out of duty to the orders of the Prophets.
One of my favorite personal design choices to this day whenever games give you color customizing on armor is to make every piece black, but the head will always stay white.

The events of Halo: Fist Full of Arrows isn't technically canon, 343 will reference it in canon fodders, but it is not officially canon. The canon explanation as to why Emile has a skull carved into his helmet comes from Halo: Ground Command. In it, it states that Emile would crave a scratch into his helmet for every Covenant killed.

@@CrontexBeats that’s fair. But if I remember correctly, Emile was, more than most other Spartans, a cudgel with which the UNSC and ONI clandestinely used to hobble insurrectionists into submission. Where Emile walked, slaughter followed. Still had a great sense of humor though.

By the way, deaths head in German is totenkamp which, during World War II, there was the SS totenkopf division, which oversaw multiple concentration camps, and the execution of millions of prisoners. Also totenkopf is the name of the little skull and crossbones the SS wear on their uniforms.

The events of Halo: Fist Full of Arrows isn't technically canon, 343 will reference it in canon fodders, but it is not officially canon.
The canon explanation as to why Emile has a skull carved into his helmet comes from Halo: Ground Command. In it, it states that Emile would crave a scratch into his helmet for every Covenant killed.
Imagine thinking you killed a super soilder and he just pops back up with a skull scratched into his helmet
The other reason is also the death of his most trusted and last family member,his brother by the covenant
