I had a dream last night that Vinny was playing this video game where you could go to any time period and place in history and play a person living in that era. So Vinny went to rural Japan in the 1800s and took over some poor guy's brain while he was riding a bike. A cutscene started where this dude's entire virtual life flashed before Vinny and Chat's eyes (being a baby, getting a job, starting a family), and we were given the choice to keep his memories or erase them to make our own character, Vinny decided to delete his memory, and he transformed him into Grey Leno. He then decided that he wanted to run for emperor of Japan and failed miserably, causing Grey Leno to become impoverished after spending all his money on his politcal campaign. The stream ended with Grey begging for money on the streets of Tokyo, it was around 3 hours long in my dream. Vinny said that he liked the game but didn't have the time to do a part 2, and people in Chat were saying something like "binty pls play elden ring again it's better than this"
Since it was mentioned, the issue people have with Nicalis is them DMCAing legacy content and content/ports built on the original freeware versions of the game, essentially trying to claim retroactive ownership of the original game and it's assets, rather than just the versions they worked on and published
The issue people have with Nicalis (IN RELATION TO CAVE STORY SPECIFICALLY) is actually stemmed from a falsified Twitter thread made by someone petty about the CEO, Tyrone, and claiming he stole Cave Story and that Nicalis was the one who DMCA'd CSE2 (the fanmade engine you mentioned) but they actually didn't steal Cave Story, Pixel wasn't tricked into signing some sketchy contract with them. Daisuke (Pixel) Amaya still gets paid for every copy of Cave Story sold and fully owns the rights to freeware. CSE2 was DMCA'd because it was illegally using code without Pixel's permission and Nicalis was in their right to take it down. Nicalis is a shitty company for many reasons yeah, but everything you have heard about Cave Story in relation to them is fabricated.
@@rompevuevitos222 The agreement between pixel and nicalis isn’t public, we don’t know who owns what and by how much. But for the sake of argument let’s pretend the developer thought it was a good idea to completely sign away their right to the property, no questions asked: Suppose I get a dog, and that dog has babies. My friend has been wanting a dog so I give my friend one of the babies. Years later a breeder wants to buy my dogs. Would it then make sense for the breeder to go up to my friend, saying they need the dog I gave them, because they, as the new legal owner of the mother, have the right to any of its offspring? Or, would it make more sense that the breeder only gets the dogs I give them at the time of the agreement?
@@kylesatwon1134The whole "Nicalis stole Cave Story" thing never made sense to me. Not only was there absolutely zero proof that they did, but also did more harm than good. Pixel isn't stupid, he wouldn't sign a contract that took ownership of the game from him. Hell, nobody would.
@@astrarobotica "indie game with great music made by a singular guy that impacted an upcoming generation" kinda fits both imo. There's even similar characters and mildly similar themes of keeping going forward, having friends and orgies.
I thought it was funny that Vinny didn’t know you can just say no to Balrog, but minutes later he talks to a lil dude in the grass whom I’d never noticed. What a wacky game this is.
I discovered this game through the most batshit means: there was artwork for it on the same forum as the one for ragnarok battle offline, an obscure sidescrolling beat em up spun off from the MMO ragnarok online, and I thought I'd check it out. I played through like 20% in Japanese before I found out about the english patch and was enamored by the art, music and gameplay despite not understanding any of the dialogue. Good times, it's still a favorite of mine to this day.
This is the OG indie game right here. I remember playing it around 2006 or so, when the freeware version was the only one available. I'm so happy to see Vinny stream it.
I have admittedly limited knowledge of Cave Story but the amount I do know didn't lead me to believe I would see chat telling Vinny to "f*** the rabbit" multiple times.
NEVER HAVE I CLICKED SO FAST IN MY LIFE HOLY SHIT IM SO FUCKING PUMPED. CAVE STORY IS LITERALLY MY FAVORITE GAME IN EXISTENCE AND IT MEANS SO MYCH TO ME THIS A DREAM COME TRUE.
i fucking hate the undertale fandom so much IT ALWAYS HAS TO BE ABOUT UNDERTALE "oh he's playing mario? mario has mushrooms? mushrooms are in spaghett!! UNDERTALE HAS SPAGHETTI!" FUCK OFF
For people who don't understand how influential the super Mario brothers game is.... super Mario: the inspiration for ardy Lightfoot. Yep, the iconic snes game. That one.
that really is just the cherry on top of everything else, really. For example, Flowey's "it's kill or be killed" is just a reference to "kill me, or I, shall kill you!" from the final boss in Cave Story, who looks eerily similar to Sans. Or both games' fixation on flowers...
Man this brings me back to playing this and La Mulana, at the time indie games were rare and getting fan translations from fans who stumble upon the games. I love the different weapons and characters in this and glad I got to experience it. (Also fuck Nicalis)
i can't believe vinny's playing cave story. i probably played through this game 30 times between the ages of 9-15 ... wait it's been 20 years since this game came out.....
It's crazy to me that Vinny has never done the True Ending in all of his multiple playthroughs of this game. It's one of the best 'hidden ending' integrations I've ever seen in a game and the entire final sequence feels completely up his street. Here's hoping he changes his mind and does it. Certain major character's fates really depend on you doing it.
incorrect you your girlfriend and your large bro get to go hang out and build a summer home dont have to hang out with annoying Sue and the dumb humans best ending ever
I'm glad I got around to know more about this game and Pixel's work throughout this year, no wonder it actually inspired a lot of people to do their own projects as independent creators.
hell yeah, my favorite italian man playing my favorite game. also it doesn't matter if he goes for the best ending or not, what matters is that he got the two most important items of the whole game
Music theory isn't the rules for how you should write music, it's an attempt to formally describe music. Basically, music theory wouldn't exist if people didn't write music to theorise about. It just so happens that learning theory is a bit of a shortcut for getting into music creation, as well as an incredible tool for exploring new musical ideas that would be hard to do through pure intuition.
@@extremejon The only version of CS that doesn't let you use the original soundtrack is 3D. Wiiware version let you switch the graphics and music however you wanted.
I am so happy Vinny is finally streaming this game! I've been waiting a long time for him too. Part of the main reason I sent him that Cave Story mod pack he mentions at the end was because I wanted to see him play it on stream (Plus show people the mod scene for the game). To think Vinny saved it for this play through (which at the time of making the pack he didn't say anything about playing the og) makes me happy. Also while i was hoping Vinny would go to (running) hell before he died I respect him for doing his own thing. Cant wait to see the rest
Hi! I'm actually from the Cave Story Modding Community, I and many others heard you sent a pack of mods to Vinny and were wondering what mods were sent? Just wondering if we should be expecting any of our work there. I hope my message is no trouble! We're excited to see what'll be there too but we didn't know someone was gonna send our work to him already 😅 What mods did you send? I'm just relaying the message over by the way, I'm a modder myself and we were talking about it the other day.
@@kylesatwon1134 While I did add some of the staple mods (jenka nightmare, wtf story) i did take most from the mod forms/database. I did use a lot from the one nerdieo mod showcase. @@sonyuku9669 This is a very nice list actually. Nerdieo streamed some good ones, it's exciting to see Vinny play them too. JN and WTF Story might be kinda iffy, as classic as they are, simply on merit that they may have not aged very well, but it's still exciting to see him check it out. There are a lot of Beta remakes, so it'll be interesting to see which one you gave him. Also, if I'm allowed to ask...Did you happen to include a mod called DripQuest in there? I actually created that one, and it was a big part of Nerdieo's stream though didn't get too much coverage in the video he made. Honestly might be an unpopular opinion but the Remastered OST is my favorite, Danny Baranowsky did the arrangements and I prefer it over the original because the OG has some piercing high-notes, my only complaint with the Remastered OST is that some of the instruments feel a bit out of place and almost too modern - like Last Cave having a fucking saxophone so it feels a bit jarring and inappropriate paired with both the graphics and the tone of the area. I don't really like any of the other OSTs as much as the Remastered and OG though.
For me it's Remastered>Famitracks>Organya>Plus>Ridiculon I like Ridiculon but it's one of those cases where it's good arrangement album music, but feels odd as in-game music, same with Plus.
Friendly reminder that currently Cave Story Encore is in development. It's a fan-made remake with graphical upgrade, new music and actual new content on the way. Currently only demo 1 is out, but it's more like an alpha version because I can't call an entire damn game with better graphics and a whole new soundtrack a simple demo.
I've never seen or watched cave story before.. I'm glad vinny's playing it.. Vinny'd be the one person I'd watch a playthrough of it for. This music definitely is some pivotal stuff.. Lots of old memes would use it.. Good times.
Hell yeah I was in a steam Cave Story RP group when i was 13 and thats my burden I've carried into adulthood, you KNOW im clocked tf in to this playthrough
The Switch version is honestly the best version. It has all the modes of every other version, on top of the jukebox mode, which is fantastic to just let play.
I actually tried Hard Mode (AKA everything kills you in one hit,) and got all the way to Monster X, which just became a massive difficulty spike that I couldn't get past.
i wish CS+ on switch had settings to disable the new lighting effects (especially the background tiles fading to black). the water tiles being replaced with simulated physics water is a fine change. i also kind of can't believe nicalis never went in and fixed the game speed to match the original, every nicalis cave story runs at 60fps instead of 50, but they didn't change any numbers to make parity with the original game, so everything just moves 1 sixth faster than it was intended to
Awesome to see Vinny play this cave story is a classic and such a great game. I’ve got it remembered like the back of my hand from playing it so much. I played cave story 3d again early this year and still doesn’t come close to the original.
This game was a huge game for me on the DS. I played it countless times since then and I truly love it and am nostalgic for it. I’m glad Vinny played with the original compositions. I really hope he saves *****
I'm so glad he picked this up, hope you enjoy the playthrough Vinny! If you plan on going for the best end (Which gets very hard at the end) you have to do a couple of extra things, but play how you want. I think you'd love the hell platforming.
YO!!!! LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO (Switch Version by far is my favorite. The lighting, water physics, the new form of the OST with the Famitracker form, IT'S SO GOOD. They made an already great game even better)
My friend gifted me this game years ago on Steam and I loved it. Beat the game, then beat it again to get the true ending. Phenomenal game. There’s a completely legal freeware version online if the publisher makes you hesitant to try it out. It’s really worth playing!
All time classic! Completing the true ending is quite a challenge, but for real Vinny, it is worth it man, you are doing yourself a disservice by not going the full journey. But hey, I suppose it is not for everyone. Glad to see you streaming it either way, Kudos bud!
This is the game that made me want to become a game developer. It's so wild that all of this, at least in the original, was made by just one person. And it was free, too!
I didn't realize it has been 20 years since Cave Story.... wow. This game still holds up well, even the original. Just tight 2D platformers controls, high skill ceiling mechanics, just overall a fantastic game. I get so nostalgic thinking about myself playing this in high school, seeing people on 4chan praise it heavens :´)
With so many things being AI "upscaled" im surprised and glad this hasnt gotten that. I love both the original look and the plus look and im glad no one has tried to make an "HD" mod for it
I remember getting both endings in a homebrew port of the original for PSP- the fact I got hooked enough ti clear it once and go back for second round just for the true ending bacl then tells me that I had a damn good time with it Good to see vin trying it out again. tho i wonder when he'll see ring racers
I doubt he will, but it’d be nice to see him do the true ending. It’s really not as hard as some of the other stuff he’s done, I’m sure it’d only be an hour or two at most of attempts for him to do it. Regardless, looking forward to watching Vinny play one of my favorite games and favorite Metroidvania.
20 YEARS? Vinny why would you do this to me. EDIT: If Vinny ever sees this, or anyone else who is curious, Nicalis is absolutely infamous for completely ghosting the developers they publish for. I don't know details for most games, but Nicalis published Ittle Dew 2+ on the Switch for Ludosity, and the "+" part of the game, the additional content, was essentially trapped on Switch for over a year because Ludosity just absolutely could not get ahold of anyone at Nicalis for over a year. Just absolute radio silence from the company you're publishing a game for. I think there were also some very heavy accusations of abuse and racism in the workplace there.
God I love Cave Story so fucking much, so glad to see Vinny do a playthrough! Vinny mentioned something similar, but this was the first game that I knew was made by one person and it blew me away as a kid, it was a big reason why I drew so many game concepts and cool guns in middle school....

Same, downloaded it in late 2004 on our family computer and played it tons with my siblings. Crazy to see how far we've come.
Literally one of my favorite games of all time; bro I can't wait to hear the polish girl mimiga story again i am so hype
But does it have cars in it?

Since it was mentioned, the issue people have with Nicalis is them DMCAing legacy content and content/ports built on the original freeware versions of the game, essentially trying to claim retroactive ownership of the original game and it's assets, rather than just the versions they worked on and published
Yep and Nicalis is overall a very shitty awful game company that has treated indie game makers like shit.
No, they bought the rights to the whole IP.
They just owe a cut to Pixel
@@rompevuevitos222 The agreement between pixel and nicalis isn’t public, we don’t know who owns what and by how much. But for the sake of argument let’s pretend the developer thought it was a good idea to completely sign away their right to the property, no questions asked:
Suppose I get a dog, and that dog has babies.
2004 was a great year for video games.
I loved it when we got Gordon Freakman 2 in 2004
I really has been 20 years huh...... T_T

I'm genuinely surprised about this, even though he WAS hinting that he would play it during Animal Well.
This is Vinny's Undertale.
except CS+ is actually good and has an identity.
@@AnAverageGoblin I don't know who half of these characters are.
They're nothing alike though...
@@astrarobotica "indie game with great music made by a singular guy that impacted an upcoming generation" kinda fits both imo.
There's even similar characters and mildly similar themes of keeping going forward, having friends and orgies.
@@AnAverageGoblinyou’re yapping so hard rn, it’s so funny.
I haven't played doukutsu since ~2004 but hearing the soundtrack and seeing the locations brought back INSANE amounts of nostalgia

For people who don't dimension how influential this game is:
Undertale basically means Cave Story. Yep, that one game is named after this one.
i fucking hate the undertale fandom so much IT ALWAYS HAS TO BE ABOUT UNDERTALE "oh he's playing mario? mario has mushrooms? mushrooms are in spaghett!! UNDERTALE HAS SPAGHETTI!" FUCK OFF
Yeah, sometimes I have a hard time dimensioning things.
I can’t believe Vinny is finally playing Undertale- er, fuck, I mean Cave Story!
Watching Vinny go through the different OST versions in the jukebox was a lot of fun
This was one of the indie games that proved that robots can have sex, after that many arts appeared, with the curly brace being the target of this.
important questions that needed answers tbh
Man this brings me back to playing this and La Mulana, at the time indie games were rare and getting fan translations from fans who stumble upon the games. I love the different weapons and characters in this and glad I got to experience it. (Also fuck Nicalis)
THE CAVE STORY STREAM IS REAL!!!
i can't believe vinny's playing cave story. i probably played through this game 30 times between the ages of 9-15
... wait it's been 20 years since this game came out.....
That game is so hard and tiring for me. I don't think I have the energy to finish it 😂
It's crazy to me that Vinny has never done the True Ending in all of his multiple playthroughs of this game. It's one of the best 'hidden ending' integrations I've ever seen in a game and the entire final sequence feels completely up his street.
Here's hoping he changes his mind and does it. Certain major character's fates really depend on you doing it.
idk, I thought it felt too unrelated to the story of the rest of the game, and the normal ending was much more satisfying
incorrect you your girlfriend and your large bro get to go hang out and build a summer home dont have to hang out with annoying Sue and the dumb humans best ending ever
It just so happens that learning theory is a bit of a shortcut for getting into music creation, as well as an incredible tool for exploring new musical ideas that would be hard to do through pure intuition.
pog ....was searching whether he's played cave story just last week, and he's finally playing it now!! too bad I couldn't catch it live
I often forget that Spelunky Classic came out soon after this game. Truly a time for gamers.
And Spelunky Classic uses ORGanya, the same Music Tool/Soundfont Cave Story uses! Pixel made that tool too.

Wasn't expecting Vinny to be playing Cave Story!
One of my favourite childhood video games
played this bad boy on the wii shop channel release, what a great time
Ah man that version was awful, the plus music was trash, and didn't loop properly. Glad that future versions let you use the original music.
@@extremejon The only version of CS that doesn't let you use the original soundtrack is 3D. Wiiware version let you switch the graphics and music however you wanted.
I know theres nothing weird to it, but vinny playing Cave Story just feels so absurd, its as if he just booted up undertool or something
Id also added the cave story beta too because i felt like that was really important to add. hopefully ive added some of your guys mods.
@@sonyuku9669 Alright, that's cool. Did you happen to have DripQuest in there? That's the one I actually made 😅 It's ok if not, it sounds like you got some really good ones in there on their own. Really exciting stuff.
I'm a huge fan of Vinny's so it'd be crazy if he actually played my mod lol. It's ok if you can't tell me for any particular reason, I'm just wondering if I should be looking forward to seeing it or not 😅
@@kylesatwon1134 actually yes i did add drip quest into it. So hopefully he'll play it when he streams the pack. I had a feeling i did add something you made
Pre-RUclips age of the internet. Curly Brace, the internet Gooner's first crush.
HE'S PLAYING PEAK!!!!
the ost still slaps
Cave Story rocks and I love seeing Vinny play it in any way, especially if it means hearing them phat beats.
the kazuma transmission tune sends me to high alert because ive been using it as an alarm for years
Alright chat let's just skip to the inevitable and fight about which soundtrack is the best one
your parental figure/dearly beloved makes the best soundtrack
Honestly might be an unpopular opinion but the Remastered OST is my favorite, Danny Baranowsky did the arrangements and I prefer it over the original because the OG has some piercing high-notes, my only complaint with the Remastered OST is that some of the instruments feel a bit out of place and almost too modern - like Last Cave having a fucking saxophone so it feels a bit jarring and inappropriate paired with both the graphics and the tone of the area. I don't really like any of the other OSTs as much as the Remastered and OG though.
I like the Danny B versions most. That’s the way I first experienced the game. But they’re all good
For me it's Remastered>Famitracks>Organya>Plus>Ridiculon
I like Ridiculon but it's one of those cases where it's good arrangement album music, but feels odd as in-game music, same with Plus.
what fight? og is baest but everyone is free to enjoy the inferior versions if they like
Decided to actually start Cave Story because of this stream and I'm actually playing it right now.
I was very obsessed with this game back in high school, I'm happy to see Vinny playing it
Cave story in 2024 hell yeah!
Love how the last ten minutes was just sampling the soundtrack and its remixes, Cave Story's music is simply GOATed enough to warrant it.
Cave story fucking rules
it's funny finding out i have the same nickname as a existing character
Friendly reminder that currently Cave Story Encore is in development. It's a fan-made remake with graphical upgrade, new music and actual new content on the way. Currently only demo 1 is out, but it's more like an alpha version because I can't call an entire damn game with better graphics and a whole new soundtrack a simple demo.
i was so goddamn shocked that many things were changed and its still called a demo
Cave Story and Paper Mario TTYD are two of my favorite games, so this past week has been an absolute treat for me
I've never seen or watched cave story before..
I'm glad vinny's playing it.. Vinny'd be the one person I'd watch a playthrough of it for.
This music definitely is some pivotal stuff.. Lots of old memes would use it.. Good times.
Hell yeah I was in a steam Cave Story RP group when i was 13 and thats my burden I've carried into adulthood, you KNOW im clocked tf in to this playthrough
we know what kind of rp you were doing
Oh man!! Two of my favorite things, combined into one ???
I've honestly been waiting for vinny to play this game for years (at least, on stream, since there wasn't a full sauce of it)
The Switch version is honestly the best version. It has all the modes of every other version, on top of the jukebox mode, which is fantastic to just let play.
I actually tried Hard Mode (AKA everything kills you in one hit,) and got all the way to Monster X, which just became a massive difficulty spike that I couldn't get past.
i wish CS+ on switch had settings to disable the new lighting effects (especially the background tiles fading to black). the water tiles being replaced with simulated physics water is a fine change. i also kind of can't believe nicalis never went in and fixed the game speed to match the original, every nicalis cave story runs at 60fps instead of 50, but they didn't change any numbers to make parity with the original game, so everything just moves 1 sixth faster than it was intended to
Didn't think I would see you play this! I love this game.
WOAH I did NOT expect this. I'm very down for this!
Here's hoping this leads to him playing Headman, would love to see the cave story modding community get some attention.
He did play Cave No Story, there is hope

Goddamn I had been obsessed with this game in the mid 00s, seeing Vinny now playing this is almost unreal.
I enjoy this game and stream. I still remember Arthur's House theme. Glad to see a playthrough of this on the FullSauce.
I can't believe this hasn't really been played on stream. Definitely one of the best soundtracks of all time.
Holy moly I remember requesting this playthrough on an old cave story of Vinny's very recently. YIPPEE!!!
I'm so glad he picked this up, hope you enjoy the playthrough Vinny! If you plan on going for the best end (Which gets very hard at the end) you have to do a couple of extra things, but play how you want. I think you'd love the hell platforming.
LET'S GOOOOO! One of my all-time favorite games, thank you for playing this.
One thing I like about Cave Story is that an attentive player can figure out what red flowers do to Mimiga long before the game actually tells you
Cave story is definitely my favorite comfort game, I've beat it multiple times but I cant believe how much they cranked up the difficulty at the end.
Absolute gem of a game. I will always come back to this classic
Vinny playing Peak Story?
YO!!!! LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO (Switch Version by far is my favorite. The lighting, water physics, the new form of the OST with the Famitracker form, IT'S SO GOOD. They made an already great game even better)
I would recommend listening to some of the Ridiculon tracks for this, they're all great!
Didn't he literally do everything needed for it anyway
@@Hithere-uz6wd I saw! Nice going Vinny! :D
We're making it out of the Blood Stained Sanctuary out of this one!
Would've been watching this anyway, but spending ten whole minutes just fucking around with the sound test? Instant fav playthrough.
20 god damn years, so happy you're playing this Vinny!
With so many things being AI "upscaled" im surprised and glad this hasnt gotten that. I love both the original look and the plus look and im glad no one has tried to make an "HD" mod for it
an actually hand-drawn upscaling of the game the likes of cuphead/hollow knight/wario land shake it would be sick though
Vinny says it's a compliment that people fall asleep to his stream. Good to know as I doze to his content frequently.
I remember getting both endings in a homebrew port of the original for PSP- the fact I got hooked enough ti clear it once and go back for second round just for the true ending bacl then tells me that I had a damn good time with it Good to see vin trying it out again.
tho i wonder when he'll see ring racers
This is still one of my favorite games, love to see it here
I doubt he will, but it’d be nice to see him do the true ending.
