A few things I wanted to mention/clear up: This had Big Sur firmware in the recovery originally at drop off. Also, after the activation lock removal, you need a recovery with macOS Catalina. It can be a bootable usb installer, bootable os with macOS Catalina (which comes with a Catalina recovery partition) or if are lucky and the macbook didn't update it's firmware then use the built in Catalina or earlier recovery mode. 😁
Mine is still doing the internet recovery with catalina stick. 🤦🏻♂️
have the same problem with my mac. unfortunately mojave/high sierra/catalina/big sur/monterey USB installers not working. which version of Catalina did you use? also do you have any other options to fix this problem?
ps: removed from cloud + turned off find my :// no results...

What worked for me:
1. Reboot macbook, holding down alt key;
2. sign on to wifi;
3. do alt-cmd-r combination (instead of pressing Enter).

Ohhhh thanks so much your a life saver. My son reset the whole computer and it wouldn’t start up I keep getting stuck in recovery mode. I brought that scan usb thingy and it started right up.!! Wish I could like this video a 1,000 times.!! ❤❤
4 weeks I have been trying to rebuild a macbook in this state and your video has solved it for me.
Ironically the original user of the laptop also had icloud locked the device.

After been saw this video and another… here is my tip to share everyone… 1st disabled the find my Mac, then after show the error 1008F, turn off the mbp, hold down only CMD + CTRL + R and wait (don’t press Touch ID button) and load the recovery, important to delete the volume (partition) from SSD, then create Macintosh HD and then recovery… regards from Axarquia

Holy s**t!!! I've been trying to restore/recover an iMac. Failures, after failures, after failures!!! Numerous error codes, disk repairs, disk erase, etc. Nothing. Then I found this video. The damn KEYBOARD!!! Swapped out keyboard from another Mac and I'm back in business. Thank you so much!
Dude, my 2017 iMac Pro was bricked, Which I cause, by trying to update to a lesser os!Ask me why? Just because , I was bored! Watching and reading your video, You help me fix my recovery! Thank You! You know the saying when it's not broke , don't mess with it! I thank you! I'm up and running !!
Thanks for this post it helped alot.. i did not have a bootable OSX (Cataina) available but i would like to share what i did to have BigSur reinstalled.
I followed all steps and removed device from find my app but somehow still found the macbook still visible in icloud website so i had to remove it from there aswell.
I was still getting the error so I did the following steps:
Step 1 - Turned Macbook Off
Step 2 - Turned on and pressed and held Option.
Step 3 - Connected to internet as prompted
Step 4 - Pressed Option+Command+R
Internet recovery started again took me back to Disk utilities where I was able to install BigSur..
Hope this additional info helps..
I did the same with find my on icloud. Your steps help me a lot and finally disk utilities pops up somehow to install BigSur

Great video and installation tip. I am also baffled if your customer removed iCloud lock on his laptop that you will still get such an error.
Thanks for this interesting information! I had the same issue with such a Mac. The iCloud credentials are stored in the SPI ROM too. So I think that‘s why that activation screen comes even if it was removed from iCloud

Actually what finally helped me was:
-Going to the recovery menu (just option key)
-Connecting to Wi-Fi there
-Command+Option+R still in that menu
-Installing Ventura (newest software)
-And then computer finally allowed me to use bootable drive with Catalina from recovery
Probably the biggest mistake I've made was clearing the disk before going into desired OS menu (don't do that)

just solve it by pressing shift-command-option-r then the download internet recovery time was much high like 9 min vs 4-5 min when I got the error. Then it loaded the recovery normal and reinstalled the sonoma OS just to get it back working.

@lapfix Can you please share where you did the download of Catalina and the way you create the External Boot ? I am trying but even when I press OPTION and choose the external Boot (ventura , sierra etc.. ) the MAC keeps going to internet. If I understand correctly, if I use the external boot with Catalina, it will works ?
Thanks for the tut. I have tried ever button combo, tethering to another Mac, and a startup USB and it always just gots to the Internet Recovery and fails... I'm stuck. It's a i7 Macbook Pro.

i prepared an catalina boot usb with transMac on windows but when i keep pressing alt/option no boot device appears beside the internal windows bootcamp drive. and when i tried internet recovery i get these errors 2102f and 1008f depending which key combination i press on the keyboard.
Use usb c ethernet adapter and lan cable. Probably transmac didn't do the job. Or use another mac to create the usb. How did you sorted yours out since 5 mo passed.

It didn't completely work for me... But one thing that I tried was restoring by putting in DFU mode and connecting my A1932 (with issues) to another Mac with Apple Configurator 2 and pressing Restore. After that, I went to the recovery with command + r and it worked. Previously, I remove my account just in case it was creating some conflict. I hoppe this can help someone if the video didn't work!

Does your icloud account show that the Find My is deactivated for your Macbook?

1 was still getting the 1008F error so I did the following steps:
Remove MacBook from find my app and additional look through web browser too then,
Step 1 - Turned Macbook Off
Step 2 - Turned on and pressed and held Option.
Step 3 - Connected to internet as prompted
Step 4 - Pressed Option+ Command+R
Internet recovery started again took me back to Disk utilities where I was able to install Ventura

I made a Catalina recovery drive but it doesn’t show up. Only internet recovery. What was the method of usb install?

Just to share: With Catalina I received a Prohibited signal. Searching they say that this is because the version I am trying to install is not compatible with my MAC, but my mac is from 2019, MacBook PRO 13 with Intel Processor.

how did you boot it from usb please
first, you have to have a bootable usb (which we show you how to make on our other videos) then hold option when you press the power button to get to the boot menu
