It's funny, because Pacino, Caan and Sheen are the same age, but Al was just boyish, just innocent-looking enough to make Michael's transformation in Part One seem truly insidious.

And in "Scarface" you can see that he acts with his whole body. As for talking with his eyes, you can definitely see that in the restaurant scene just before he pulls the gun out and kills Sollozzo and McCluskey.

Not many women liked the godfather when it first came out, or even later on. I think had it come out today, women would finally get it. I being 13 when the movie came to theaters remember for years after that, not one woman of color ever mentioned how god looking Pacino was....for years and years after he was acting in many other pics after GF1. My suspision today is that with the female black show hosts they now have today, and more media coverage, they would make Michael into a black womans dream. I still at 55 am amazed I STILL never heard a black woman ever talk about Pacino. What was he invisible to black women. Yes I know, black women generally go for the muscular slap em around type. But michael? How could you not love him as ANY color woman?

Wow. I dont believe what I just saw. Michael in the auditions, looked like a high school kid. Even his voice was almost childish. If you told me he was 17 in that audition, I wouldnt think twice. But then when they showed the real shooting outside instead of inside...its like he "morphed" into something else. This is inspiring to me. Do all of us have that thing in us that can just come out at the right time? Also, I am doubly shocked that Diane Keaton was in side at the table the best actor out of the bunch. To me she was better inside at the table than in the real scene. I love the way James Caan said and few outide of NY would really get this "They spent $400,000 to do the testing, and wound up with 4 corned beef sandwiches." He is a guy that while not as great as Pacino, I never understood why he didnt make a lot more gangster pics or even just pics over the years.

you can see Pacino is the best easily: Caan is too cocky, Sheen is overly downbeat and trodden. Pacino is still this wide eyed, innocent kid, yet he has this surmounting rage within him. it makes it interesting to see what will happen to him and his fall even greater

@Kris B: Pacino was an unknown but he had acting credits, mostly in the theater. And Coppola wanted him. Why did they hire Coppola if they had no confidence in his judgment? The studio bosses are too rich to be hurt by a bad movie. ("Love Story", released the previous year and a huge success, had gotten Paramount out of trouble.) If they get fired, they take their severance package (in the millions) and retire or work for another studio, like the executives of any big business. Do you actually believe that Ryan O'Neal or Robert Redford would have been convincing as a person of Sicilian descent?

Think....did one person in 40 years ever go...."yeah! wasnt that great the way he kiled his own brother. I think that was the worst part of the film. They should have had him do something else evil to show him changing as a human being. That was too over the top. Wow, 42 yrs since I saw that and I never thought they should have left that out.Plus the fact that they had him standing right there in the boathouse while it was done, thats totally rediculous, science fiction even. thank god you're not a film critic (or in any position that requires critical thinking, hopefully).
overall though he killed Fredo because his mother died. He swore to keep Fredo alive whilst their mother was alive so she didn't have to suffer another son dying, but once the mother died then Michael killed Fredo. It made sense too. Fredo was a risk to the family's reputation (because don't forget Michael's irrational hunger for power was a big part of what changed him from the end of Godfather 1 to Godfather 2. Godfather 2 was when he went from being in an immoral position to being completely soulless). And Fredo was also a risk to his family's health too. After already helping people put out a hit on Michael and after betraying the family multiple times, it made sense now that Michael had his own family and would be growing older that he wouldn't be able to keep a threat like that so close and let down his guard with someone like fredo around. Fredo had to die.
