The reason why the raggae sound is familiar is because it was first released by The Paragons in 1967. They were a ska band from Kingston, Jamaica. Although their version was the original, it was Blondie's cover that became a #1 hit in both the US and UK charts.
Written by the late great John Holt, lead singer of the Paragons.
The percussion in this song is amazing! Along with everything else in the song.

This brings me back to 3rd grade in 1980-81. The joke of the year was I called my teacher "Blondie" and even made a "The Tide Is High" joke in class, and my teacher didn't get it. 🤣 My classmates thought it was funny. This was one of their FOUR #1 hits. They would also hit #1 with their follow-up single, "Rapture." 😎👍

I also love this video because it makes me think of Star Wars due to the bug alien being dressed as Darth Vader. The Empire Strikes Back was already playing in theaters when this song came out and started getting lots of radio airplay in 1980.

I remember when this came out, I love the reggae music though I heard the original in the early 60's. My Mums eyes would light up and she would would smile while listening to happy music with a great beat (Mum suffered from deep depression) I watched her and not the TV lol. Hey, good to see you back; hope you are well. Lol, I haven't seen this video in a long time and I'd forgotten about the Branch Motors truck passing by in the opening seconds of the shoot. My Dad drove over the road for Branch for 30 years, give or take. You can also see one in a scene from, I think, "Annie Hall", for those fascinated by this bit of folklore. But please think about playing more of their earlier songs - eg "IN THE FLESH", "I'm Always Touched By Your Presence Dear", "Picture This", "Fade Away and Radiate", "11:59", "DREAMING", "The Hardest Part", "UNION CITY BLUE", "Shayla", "Accidents Never Happen", "Slow Motion" "ATOMIC" - they are all really fantastic songs by this group. Or listen to the whole albums starting from the earliest to latest. "Blondie" "Parallel Lines" and "Eat to the Beat" are probably my favourites. Ps probably listen to the studio versions first. Hope I am not being too prescriptive!! Keep up the good work!

It is really worth a listen. Heaps of us loved this band and still have the original vinyl to this day.
Very underrated band.
If you do listen, please listen to at least two tracks. "Julia" was a commercial hit but the other songs are much more rocky and strong.
