Blondie is punk - new wave- disco- reggae - pop - rock … they do it all ..
And rap.....’’rapture’’
@@funkyledouxrebelle969 Yep. That was actually a fun video.
@@woodymeadows9363 yup and she had an OG hip hop legend grandmaster flash. She arguably introduced rap to the white population and still gave credit to the grandmaster👌🏽mad respect for Debby
@@woodymeadows9363 I liked Rapture! Someone who knew I did had to convince me that it was Rap, knowing that I actually don't like Rap (or disco), and Rapture is kinda a melding of Rap and Disco, IMO. For me, the Sci-Fi/Psychedelic tilt was the initial capture.
It's pop
This is the low rent video for the song. The video that aired on MTV back in the early 80s was way more magical and had a much higher production (and sound) value.
the official video for “Dreaming”
If it seems like a good portion of music videos back then made no sense, you’re right.
Where a lot expressed the ideas of the artist, many others were just an experiment
with the tools of the trade (so to speak) at that time.
Thank you; Duke Reid*
I mer Debbie Harry some years ago, al9ng with the band Blondie. I'm proud to say that she flirted with me and kissed me. She's UNFORGETTABLE!!!! ❤
A band that crossed all genre and description. Blondie was Boss.
This is Blondie covering a 1967 song by the Jamaican band "The Paragons." The style is reggae.
When she sings "I'm going to be your number one," it could be that she's referring to the first mate, a role on the ship which is second in command. So it's like a marriage proposal: "I'll be your wife."
And according to the video, the ship is the Executor. heh
Technically it's rocksteady
Yes yes yes that’s what I was trying to remember
the
paragons
thank you yes
@@JulioLeonFandinho The version by the Paragons is rocksteady and the cover by Blondie is reggae ... from what I understand. There is a video of the version by the Paragons.
But I don't really know the distinctions.
@@SG-js2qn This cover by Blondie sounds quite identical to the original, there's some brass arrangement and little details non existent in The Paragons version, but it's basically the same song with a woman voice...
About rocksteady and reggae, from what I know reggae derived from rocksteady, they're basically the same with some differences like in the lyrics and how recordings are produced
Blondie doesn't fit into one category. They are flexible, fun, and have a unique sound.
Love them so much.
You gotta listen to Maria.
They such an interesting band I never really can tell whether they British or American.
Strange video. Heard the song on radio as a kid but never the video. For some weird reason it has Darth Vader type character but also looks like clips from 1960's rocket launch and even special effects like from 60's. Have no idea what it has to do with the song so it funny in a way. I not know what year but I assume well before MTV video era. Maybe 1979 to 81?
@@shaundgb7367 Blondie started in the 1970s, in NYC. This song was on the album Autoamerican which was 1980. However, The Tide is High, is a cover song. Originally recorded by The Paragons.
Blondie is so unique that they have lasted 50 years in an industry known to chew people up and spit them out.
Debbie Harry also had some solo work, which was not too bad. Rush Rush makes me laugh, because it really speaks to the early 80s over indulgence of drugs and partying.
@@TattooedTownie Sensational follow up that love learning about. Thanks heaps!!!
@@shaundgb7367 if you're interested in the music scene that birthed Blondie, check out the book
"Please Kill Me - the oral, uncensored history of punk" by Leggs McNeil and Gillian McCain
It's an amazing read about the NYC punk scene of the 70s. How it started in the 60s with bands like The Velvet Underground, The Doors and the MC5, and grew into something much bigger. The pictures included are a fantastic touch, and they do talk about the connections of punk scenes in LA, London, and Ohio.
They had 4 #1 hits, all different styles. This was their reggae #1 hit. Amazing song! I was in the 3rd grade when it hit #1, as well as "Rapture" just before this one.
Most call it reggae…but this song in particular has more of the hallmarks of straight up ska.
But just the term reggae is more well known than ska.
Fun fact…Bob Marleys first recording was a ska song, Simmer Down. Recorded with godfathers of ska, the Skatalites.
Rapture was the first number one rap hit in America.
Sounds like ska because it is IS ska... originally done by Jamaica's John Holt and the Paragons in 1967, a key song in the development of ska/reggae/rocksteady.
Six number one's in England
@@user-gt2uf8cq9y Everyone has always called it reggae, including wiki. I don't know anything about ska, but it must be pretty much the same thing as reggae.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “Hanging On The Telephone”!!!
That’s a great shout!
Yes, one of my favorite Blondie songs!! Also, The Hardest Part!!
2:08 "I'm getting Gwen Stefani/No Doubt 20 years prior..." Exactly. There is a straight line of fashion trend setting front women: with no Deborah Harry there'd be no Madonna. No Madonna and then no Gwen Stefani. 5:17 "They don't make women like Blondie any more." Yeah, no kidding! But here's the thing, besides being heavenly gorgeous, Debbie had real pipes. There are live recordings of her doing various covers (David Bowie's "Heroes" comes to mind) where you really hear how much power and perfect pitch she had.
Blondie and No Doubt we're about 10 to 15 years difference, but close enuff. I agree with everything you said tho.
Honestly I always thought Gwen Stefani was trying to be Lene Lovitch, but I see your point.
Before any of them there was Cher, Bette Midler & Patti LaBelle.
I remember this song from 7th grade... I can't tell you the last time I heard this song... Keep going guys your doing great! Your baby will come out of the womb a musical master!!!
I didn't know until recently that it was a cover. Originally a 1967 rocksteady song from the Paragons.
I always got mariachi vibes from this song lol. Blondie is very versatile. More please:)♥️
Blonde was clearly hanging out in Brooklyn probably down on Flatbush when they got the idea for this song LOL
Original by The Paragons, a reggae classic
I was waiting for someone to say that.
It's not reggae. It's more Doo Wop. I looked into it and they called it "greasy". There is Island music but the singing is Doo Wop influenced.
This article from The Paragons - OLDIES do t com mentions the Doo Wop influence. This is especially the case in this song, for sure. Never heard of "greasy" before.
With their high false falsetto and exotic warbling, the Paragons represented a rock 'n' roll doo-wop sound - sometimes called 'greasy' - that was extremely ...
I sometimes think Blondie does not get their due. Ahead of their time in many ways...if it is "ska" it is ska before anyone ever heard of "ska"....long before "No Doubt"...Blondie was rock, Blondie was punk, Blondie was Disco, Blondie was New Wave, hell, Blondie even did some rap...Blondie (Debbie Harry) is in her late 70s...and on tour currently
You should see Deborah Harry earlier. Playing at cbgb's in New york? She's this skinny heroin looking blonde chick with a mohawk looking very pop punk. These people were right on the Innovation Edge at the time in the New York scene for sure. It influenced so much music to come.
Debbie Harry and Blondie were to the 70s what someone like Katy Perry would be today. The only difference is Debbie and the band got their start at CBGB and they were living and playing in NYC when nobody wanted to be in NYC.
Blondie is the name of the band. Deborah Harry is the name of the singer.
In the early days they even produced button badges that said, 'Blondie is a group'.
all the different styles just prove that the band really had talent and was not just another product of the production line
This was a huge hit for Blondie. I believe this ended 1980 as the number one song of the year.
Please do Blondie's Dreaming video if you can. It rocks. So does Clem Burke. It just might become your favorite Blondie tune.
Ha! Gwen Stefani should do a cover of this!
She did actually
No Doubt/Gwen Stefani ('90s/'00s ska-punk/new wave band) was influenced by Blondie one of the groups that influenced No Doubt. Also, Blondie and No Doubt were about 10-15 years apart. Blondie was in the '70s/'80s and reunited in the '90s. They were punk/new wave. Thats the island sound you hear, ska/reggae. Also Blondie was very fluid in their style, genre.
Saw them at CBGBs back in the day, why back lol !
The band is "Blondie". The blonde woman is Debby Harry.
Blondie started out as a punk band but continually changed artistically.
You guys should react to more Blondie…
"Heart of Glass", "Atomic", "Dreaming", "Hanging On the Telephone", "In The Flesh", "Picture This", "Sunday Girl", "Denis"
🎸🤘
They already did 'Heart of Glass' (and also 'One Way Or Another', 'Rapture' and 'Call Me').
Atomic, Sunday Girl and Dreaming are awesome!
Reggae, originally by The Paragons. Reggae is laid back ska, or ska is high-energy reggae... take your pick. For some fun ska, try "Night Boat To Cairo" by Madness, for more reggae try Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier".
This was a cover, originaly wrote and performed by Jamaican reggae band The Paragons. One of their other big hits, Denis, was a cover too, of Denise, by Randy and the Rainbows.
This is a cover of a 60s song by The Paragons, Blondie were billed as New Wave but had varied music styles doing disco to Rap songs, check out “Heart of Glass” (disco)
Love your reaction. You're right about the style of the song. It's pretty reggae-ish. This song was released in 1980. Love Debbie Harry!
This is actually a cover. The original was by The Paragons in 1967
Blonde was so diverse in style. One of my fav bands from my childhood & teenager years!!! Great to hear again. Brings back soo many memories. Thank you!!!
She does it in a rocksteady. Which is ska, but slower.
Ha! That island is Jamaica and that islandy sound is reggae! Irie my friends
This song wasn’t written by Blondie, it’s by the Paragons. it’s Reggae! Really you need to some listen to Alton Ellis, John Holt and Black Uhuru
The Paragons were ska/rocksteady, which preceded reggae. I saw Black Uhuru open for The Police in '82.
Cover version of the Paragons 1967 hit - Reggae init
Originally from 1967 from a band called Paragons, a reggae group
jamaican music became a trend during the 70s until the 80s, many rock and pop bands covered or copied ska/reggae/rocksteady songs, like this one from The Paragons...
Ska was quite popular in the UK during the punk days, but in the early 70s even Led Zeppelin made a reggae song and Keith Richards was a huge fan of those genres.
At its core its reggae...
the beat is a bit to quick for reggae, but it's close to a ska beat, so maybe it's rock steady?
Give the Specials a go if you want ska.
This sounds like reggae+mariachi. Very eclectic band.
The word u are looking for is musically 'eclectic'... Blondie was a new wave 70's band that did not play just 1 style of music... they had reggae, punk, disco and rock songs.
There are bands that do not stick to 1 style of making music... Rush spent 40 yrs making music w/ so many influences... Faith No More is a rock band that cannot be classified... The Red Hot Chili Peppers created so many different facets to their music from mellow to aggressive... The Rolling Stones were so diverse sonically in their long career that they even made country music... Just a few of those eclectic bands.
They were '80s and '90s, too.
More rock steady than ska. Ska has a much faster rhythm.
The song was written by John Holt
hanging on the telephone and dreaming are two good songs by blondie.
Those were some Full Blown MARIACHI trumpets right there! :-D
Hope they check out The Specials for ska music.
Was that the Man from Mars from Rapture, dressed up as Darth Vader?
Original done by The Paragons, backed by Tommy McCook and the Supersonics.
To me it has kind of a raggae type of sound.
It was originally recorded by a Jamaican group called The Paragons in 1967
Gwen Stefani can wish she sounds like Blondie.
This is a Reggae song from the 60s. The Band "Blondie," is known more for a Disco/ Punk Rock style, so this was a very different sound for them.
SKA!!!
You need to listen to more SKA!!!
Try Tell You Why, by the Pietasters, please.
Sound's like ska because it is.
A fun little reggae sounding song. I had no idea this was Blondie, either, but I love the Blondie power in the lyrics. She’s not the kind of girl to give in just like that. She’s gonna be his #1.
In fact it's John holt and the paragons from the sixties
@@TheoPhim thanks. Again, I had no idea.
"Debbie Harry kinda looks like an alien"... She modelled for legendary artist HR Giger, check it out Brad!
1970S NEW YORK PUNK SCENE !
Both Gwen Stefani (No Doubt) and this are reggae. Island sound. Quite popular with groups like the Police too.
The singer's name is Debbie Harry. The name of the group is Blondie.
Not my favorite Blondie song but I absolutely love the last few seconds with the crazy Tide is HIGH!
No. 1 in the UK and US [among other countries].
My favourite group in the 70/80's during my teenage/young adult times.
Blondie also has a song called "Maria" that I think you guys would like. Also, Debbie Harry was a Playboy bunny before she became famous.
Give 'Hanging on the Telephone' 'Picture This' or 'Union City Blue' a listen next guys then dive into the world of Blondie 😊
Your calling it Ska was apt. Ska was a derivative of reggae and this was their foray into Caribbean music.
Lex is right it's ska
This is considered Reggae. Blondie is the Band - Debra Harry is the singer. Check out their cover of RING OF FIRE in the 1980 film "ROADIE" , starring Meat Loaf.
This is one of Blonde’s most popular hits! It’s been in so many movies!! Very recognizable! One of my favorite tunes by them! Musicians back then were more versatile than now!❤❤
That's an understatement 😁
This song got me heavily into Blondie back when I was 7….then I looked backwards into the 70’s(my parents records) & started digging Rapture & Heart of Glass….good stuff 👊🏽👊🏽
Classic
This is a cover of a song oriby a Jamaican rocksteady band called the Paragons. Rocksteady is sorta… reggae-adjacent
I recommend Heart of Glass and Dreaming by Blondie!
Bumpers galore! (Don't think I've ever seen that video)
this is a cover of a rocksteady song performed by the Paragons in the mid/late 60s
Shoot, 1980 no Insta. We might have still had a party line telephone.
I like Blondie , and i like this song. But I still prefer the original by The Paragons.
How about a ska stream? Can't leave out The Specials.
I had Debbie's poster on my wall in the 70s next to my Kiss posters 😂 sexiest woman alive
I'VE ALWAYS AND FOREVERRRR HAVE GOTTEN BLONDIE AND THE PRETENDERS MIXED UP, I DON'T KNOW WHY OR WHAT IT IS BUT DEBBIE HARRY AND CHRISSY HYNDE JUST SOUND THE SAME I SUPPOSE, SAME MUSICAL ERA AND GENRE AT I GUESS! :) IT'S CRAZY
As far as the concept video for this song goes, well...I think the tide might have had some company, if you see what I mean.
Was a number one hit back in the days, the radio stations played it many times hourly. Classic!
This is a cover song by a 1967 Reggae band called The Paragons.
whats the difference between SKA and SKIFFLE?
Reggae with a pinch of Mariachi horns/violins. What's not to like?
I wish you’d react to her punkier stuff like ‘eat to the beat’ or ‘Livin in the real world’ or even ‘hanging on the telephone’
Hilarious the reaction to a group plays more than one style of music. That's what made groups great then, not being stagnate like the garbage of today.
Atomic Kitten covered this song in the early 2000's.
Original is a rocksteady song by the Paragons, you should really give it a listen
Have you guys listened to "One Way or Another" yet? She sounds entirely different there, too.
It's a cover of a 1967 tune by a Jamaican group called the Paragons.
Love this song, and I’m sure there’s a story/rationale for the video but I’ve never understood it.
she kind of brought reggae to mainstream attention, just as she had rap before this, with Rapture. Reggae was very big in Jamaica, and crossed over to England and influenced groups like the Clash. Blondie dug it too.
I love this song but the video is very dissappointing. It should be on an island, or in a Mexican restaurant
Debbie has such a powerful voice and oh so classy and beautiful! I was thinking in the cut where she was shaking up tge water, notice she kept her knees together. Today, the women would be man spreading....
Debbie Harry was adopted as an infant and was raised in Hawthorne , New Jersey.
