  • In this video, you’re gonna see myself installing a fan on the inside of our cover that goes to our refrigerator. I came across a video from HappilyEverHanks for which Carl was installing a fan for their RV and it was a great idea since we live in a very Hot area in the summer.I did do some of my own mods and I think you will like‪@Stagecoachvlog‬

Our Keystone Cougar 5th wheel came with 3 fans angled upwards towards the fins, pushing the hot air out of the top vent. Our first summer proved that wasn't going to be enough when the fridge wouldn't go below 45, so I installed two sets of Titan fans on the lower vent pulling air in and upwards towards the 3 Dometic fans and then I installed two sets of the same fans pushing the hot air out through the top vent. This has worked very well, even in 100-degree weather. I also installed two fans on the interior coils which helps circulate the air in the fridge and it cools the fridge faster.

Just put a 12v compressor fridge in there and you won’t have to worry about being level and the heat and you can get a bigger one that goes in that space, I love mine better than the the electric/propane one and it’s a lot more efficient 👍👍👍

Yeah, if I ever get a different RV, I think I would be looking for one that would have a residential refrigerator in it. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for this! I'm in Az. '05 Expedtion. (full timer) Norcold 4 door side by side with ice maker.
So these fail when it gets 110+ degrees and I eventually bought a 7 cu ft floor job for the summers.
My tech guy about 2-3 years ago told me that Norcold put out a notification saying to install "two" fans out there: one blowing "out" & the other blowing "in".
Me not having ANY tinkering prowess, I was just lost at the idea. You just lit up the whole scenario to where I can "see it"!
Oddly enough, this summer there's no issues!!?? It's just like a residential unit this year. Go figure....
But now I know what to do in the future. THANKS!

billcoleman7316 - I tried the screen on the covers to keep hornets out a couple years back & our first trip out the fridge stopped cooling. Turned out to be the screen was impeding the airflow, so I pulled it off at the campground and all was ok after that but your results may vary, just a heads up. Everyday's a Holliday, I am going to try the fan idea. The little on off switch is cool too. Is that a rheostat also? Thanks for posting your repair

It is a great mod. I did this mod a couple years ago But I have two vents for my fridge. So I put mine at the top vent blowing outward . The fins are all at the top so it draws the air up and out easier. But make sure you buy a fan you can adjust the speed on. I had mine on 3/4 and you could hear the fan inside the camper. So i turned it down to half. I do recommend with just one vent to turning the fan around so its drawing the hot air from the top of the fridge where the fins are. And have it blowing out of the vent not inward. This will bring the hotter air down and out instead of up. There is a lot of space between where you have it and the fins. Drawing the air down will draw the air faster from the top as well.

Your rv looks like a 1999 Monaco diplomat.
I used to have one , same color, same floor plan.
Was a solid work horse . fleetwood chasis is awesome Loved that thing.
Owned it for 12 years and worked out a lot of the kinks.
Looks like you took out the white sofa from the passenger side wall to install the TV and stand .. good idea.
Edit:: they also make a fan ( dometic brand) that fits the slots in the cover , its a smaller size , it has i think, four or five small fans that cover the length of one of the vent slots and is thermostat controlled. 12 volt.
It is expensive, but is made for the dometic style covers, which is what you have, even though its a norcold ref.
    New sub 👍👍

My husband went through a thing similar at Lab Corp in Abilene,Texas. When the substitute lab tech was done. Sent the sample to someplace.? The doctor couldn’t find it and Lab Corp couldn’t find it. He had bruised so badly. She was. Supposed to be a veteran at blood taking.
But couldn’t do any of it without a mess!

I put two fans on my fridge and it works great but mine is solar and at night when it starts to cool down the fans turn off, which is fine because it’s cooler, but I have two fans going all day every day to keep it cool.

Just a thank you for the idea of more airflow to the cooling coils of the fridge. An idea for you to cosider. Put the fans in/under the vent on top. Sucking air up will move more air then blowing it up. And then if you did use propane the fans would be no where near to be a problem

  • @azcharlie2009

If you don't use the propane why don't you just get an electric refrigerator? You have all of the disadvantages of a absorption refrigerator but are not using the advantage?

I'd first remove the white "Winter" cover above your hand at time marker 3:09. The air vents upwards behind the fridge through the roof vent. If it doesn't work immediately you will know. In even more extreme conditions.

So ignorance is bliss on my behalf. Is you fan running on 110 ac or 12 volt? My coach is a 2012 gulfstream class c which is 33 feet long. I typically don’t run down the road with the generator running to supply 110 ac unless there’s a need.

I suggest you take that drill bit out of that drill and while holding it in your right hand draw back your arm as far as possible and throw that drill bit away 😉. Then go to your local box store and buy a set of drill bits.😊 !
