I watched Three's Company in three separate phases. Once when they originally aired when I was young, once in re-runs where I sort of thought "These are all kind of juvenile and same-y..." and then a third time where I just appreciated what a master of physical comedy John Ritter was.
I watched the show under similar circumstances. Loved it as a young person, but when I grew up, I saw just how unsophisticated the show was. It's like watching community theater. But like you said, you have to appreciate his physical talents.
Wow, funny, I was thinking the same thing recently. John always gets credited for his physical humor, but he was more than that. His personality and comedic timing verbally also were assets of him. It also didn't hurt that he was the genuine "Nice Guy" of Hollywood....
Always been my favorite show, never will there be a show more dear to my heart… I gotta say though, if you’ve never watched “Three’s A Crowd”, you’ve just got to. I hate that it was just John from the original cast, but it is still absolutely wonderful. If you have Tubi, or Hulu you can watch on those platforms. Only 1 season, just 22 episodes, but it was great as well.
Dude to this day whenever I see John Ritter in a film or on TV it brings a smile to my face...he was such a genuinely happy and positive guy who really cared for people and loved his fans. RIP John Ritter.
For a lot of us Gen Xers and older Millennials, this show is a time capsule of the late 1970s/early 1980s, when our parents were young adults in their 20s or early 30s and still being called "the kids".
76er here. I miss those days. My parents had one of those black and white TV/Radio combos. What was the screen; about 6 inches and a long antennae? lol. We sat at the kitchen table watching Three's Company and I can remember my young parents laughing at John RItter's antics.
@@thunkjunk Yeah 1975 here. Growing up I never understood why the Ropers and Mr. Furley called Jack, Janet and Chrissy "kids", because they looked like grown adults to me. Now that I'm late 40s and getting closer and closer to Mr. Ropers age, I get why people start calling a 22 or 25 year old, or even a 30 year old "kids" when you get to a certain age. When you're a little kid and you see older adults call younger adults that, it's kinda confusing. Until you turn into Mr. Roper/Mr. Furley.
Met him on a plane from NY to LA in the 80s. I was 11 and such a fan. I was embarrassed to talk to him, but my dad walked me over to John's seat. He was the nicest, most polite and genuine person. Devastated when he passed. RIP John Ritter
Jack Tripper/Harry Hooperman/John Hartman/Paul Hennessy, and my personal favourite, Clifford The Big Red Dog. 20 Years later since he’s passed, and yet he’s still an incredible talent. Thanks for the fun and laughs, Mr. Ritter.
Such a legend! One of the all time great actors, and from all accounts one of the sweetest people to work in the business. The way he hammed it up straight into camera for the Ohlmeyer joke killed me! What a pro. One of the best to ever do it! :)

Same here-I still laugh my head off every time I watch it. There’s a few actors/shows that can pull that off. 3’s company was one of those. I have the 3’s company dvd set-one of the best shows ever. In fact I’m watching it right now as we speak on channel Logo.
Same. Watching it nowadays always brings back that nostalgic feel. A lot of times, my mind will start to wander to the 80’s, in general, which was the greatest decade of my life, hands down
Nice interview Conan o’ Brien did with John Ritter-rest in peace, John-you are missed much-a great talent who did physical comedy on three’s company-that was the show I loved with John and the girls in it! It made my day and still does in reruns! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I was watching Three's Company recently and, in one great scene, it hit me that Joyce was the only one still alive and that hit hard. It was such a great show and I still love it!
If there was an American I would send to represent us to the world in the 80’s, it would be John Ritter. He had an aura that commanded the attention of pretty much everyone in his presence.
I remember sitting at the kitchen table as a kid watching Three's Company on one of those black and white TV/Radios that had an antennae and a screen size of about 6 inches. Damn I miss the 80's.
Still remember doing some live theatre in the 90s. I had moved to a new city where I knew nobody, went out for a part, and ended up with the role. It was a fairly tight company of performers and I had a bit of a tough time getting in with them, being a brash, overconfident younger (22 yrs old) member. Then one day at rehearsal and being comfortable with my lines I started adding some physical comedy to my bits, before we had started doing the fine tuning of the blocking. When we all sat down after and the director asked me how I wanted to play the part physically I said "I'm picturing in my head how John Ritter would play this". All the older theatre people loved me from that moment onward for my "inspired" choice. Thanks John for what you brought to acting.
Robin Williams, also. Agree he had that skill of facial expression body movements tone change, so grateful for such displays of humanity, people who make us laugh and smile. 😊
I bought the whole dvd set box in 2019. Still watching it in 2024. I never get tired of it. Just goes to show the best material gets crapped on by mainstream media and press, but its those pieces that last. Love John and all the characters of threes company.
I loved John Ritter, Loved him on the Waltons and of course Three's Company. Also, i loved that he hosted the Los Angels portion of the United Cerebral Palsy Telethons (which his brother Tom was born with, as was I.
Seriously, any fan of Three's Company can appreciate the physical comedy of John Ritter. I'm not surprised he didn't get injured doing half the stuff he did. Watch the fall from "Strangers in the Night". Even with the padding, that looked scary.
Yes! And he seems like a great guy too. I also love how he is one of the main voices on Gravity Falls, one of my son's (and mine too) favorite animated shows. Followed in his dad's voice over footsteps as well.
Too be fair, Ritter was trying WAY too hard. We all know that the best interviews with Conan are when the guest isn't doing a bit or reciting jokes they thought would be funny.
I absolutely love Threes Company and loved Jack, I remember very well the episode he's talking about where he banged his head..A Night Not to Remember. It was one of my favorite episodes, Jack was so freaking funny in this one, with one of his lines being..."I just love your bangkok bangers" I still watch Threes Company reruns, it's one of my favorite shows ever. The one and only iconic mr, john Ritter, remember watching threes company when I was a kid ,and I still watch it till this day ,it never gets old , sad he passed away ...
He was a true gem. Gone too soon
I learned to do physical comedy when I was kid, by watching John Ritter.
RIP John Ritter (September 17, 1948 - September 11, 2003), aged 54
You will be remembered as a legend.
Truth. A nice guy and was a hard working actor.
Personally, I didn't even find hi particularly funny
I'm reading this in 2024. Has it been that long? 🥀💔
He died about 2 weeks before my father, at roughly the same age.
I hope they met up in heaven.
Yeah, John, thanks for contributing to my childhood.
With Suzanne's passing, I'm on a Three's Company binge on RUclips. So many great memories. I can't believe Jack and Chrissy are gone.
Sadly we are down to only one original Three's Company cast member and it's Janet. May they all RIP.

John Ritter was amazing as Jack Tripper in Three's Company, but my favorite was his performance in Sling Blade. What a great talent gone too soon.
