When I worked in watch marketing, we used to have a "lunch game". You had to pick a person in the restaurant, check out their clothing, watches and accessories and then tell your colleagues their "story", where they live, what car they drive, etc. Then we walked over and asked the people. It was scary how accurate we often got.
The mean list of watch brand stereotypes... 😜 Rolex: I am a successful used car salesman Omega: I couldn't afford a Rolex but this one is better Jaeger LeCoultre: you don't know about it because you're not as sofisticated as me Tudor: I saved many years to buy a Rolex Panerai: I have a small... But my watch is huge Grand Seiko: I don't drive a Toyota, I drive a Lexus Hublot: i might be strange but I have a lot of money Audemars Piguet: Ofcourse I am a brat A Lange & Söhne: I was a nerd now I am a successful nerd Richard Mille: I wipe my own ass with 100 dollar bills Vacheron Constantin: I live in a castle, Dracula is my neighbour Franck Muller: I am a moron but I can afford stupidity... or can I!? Tag Heuer: I like their commercials Piaget: Who am I, is this me!? IWC: I wanted to buy a expensive watch... But not to expensive... Patek Philippe: I won the lottery and now I am a gangster rapper
Rolex has two stereotypes: 1) watch enthousiasts who appreciate the rich heritage and like the timeless design 2) spoiled rich kids, who were given one by daddy or just have too much money, and only recognise the front from the back of the watch because the fancy logo is on it...
Great video! Flash up 2-3 watch pics when you cover the brand next time. Also interested more in the stereotypes of Rolex users. Maybe even by Rolex type Daytona vs datejust etc.
Nothing wrong with that. Rolex is the king of marketing. It is so successful that people for no apparent reason will imply they are bourgeois along with the owners. Problem is They make a great watch that holds its value and can used as currency in a desert in India if needed. Does it really matter what the reason is why they bought it?
John ¡! What happened? Lots of brands and No One picture of any iconic model of each brand?? Come on !! Go and make the video again!! Do your homework.😎😀
For my collection, it is almost one watch per brand. So it was fun to hear about how the buyers of these watches is perceived by an industry insider. Thanks for the great video!
What's the old saying... "Who Blows? Hublot." FPJ (you hit thr nail on the head) is the new Rolex. It's a flex piece that everyone knows. And that's coming from a finance guy ; )
I grew up in the electric watch era. I've owned a Bulova Accutron and the early Sieko digital quartz models. Currently rock a smattering of Casios including the Duro, a Hamilton MIIB digital and an iWatch series 3. Currently looking at a Hamilton Khaki mechanical and a Hamilton PSR.
Hi JP. Great insider observations. I've been on a steep learning curve with watches these past few years, refining my tastes. Your spot on about Omega owners. I'm 60-somerhing and a professional who likes cars. My take: 1) great respect for Rolex, the first tool watch. Now way out of my price range, and I detest the goggle eye look from the date magnifier. For me it's one of those things that once aware of it my eye is compulsively drawn to it. 2) Seiko has big QC issues and often falls short on key pieces like Hardlex, jangly bracelets, and sub par movements. Their price hikes can't help. But again, great respect for their accomplishments, so much so that I collect their vintage chronographs. 3) Omega. I was initially turned off by the Moonwatch syndrome (my phrase). But now I have done a 180 and have what I think is my forever watch, a black dial Speedmaster Mk40. It's solid, looks great, fits about every need. 4) my G Shock GW2310, which is the weekender/travel/beater wear. Tooltastic, and if I break it no tears. 5) for my time or two a month dress ups I put on a Seiko 5 SNK 793 on a lizard strap. At its price I don't mind it's archaic 7s movement and mineral glass. It's beautiful to look at. Cheers!
Ball: I'm hardly the outdoorsy type, but am attracted to Ball because of their engineer heritage, as expressed in their COSC, shock resistant, anti-magnetic watch lines. I have one Ball and am looking for more.
I appreciate many things about Grand Seiko and its overall value proposition. I have had every movement but a high beat. I find GS to be a sincere brand committed to very positive horological values. I like the intensity of the GS community. As a group, they are very aware of all things GS. Because GS is issuing new and diverse references, it is very easy to collect GS accretively across a wide spectrum of different types of watches: dress, sport, diver and GMT.
Thank you, John, for this good first effort. As many have already alluded to you have only scratched the surface of this topic. For most, their watch keeps time; for some, their watch keeps score; for a few, their watch reflects their values. Dig deeper!
Journe is the one grail brand for me, many brands you learn to love when you learn about the quality and the heritage. Journe hit me as soon as I saw one.
I know lot of Rolex owners mostly in the real estate business. They wear them to gain recognition respect trust from buyers and sellers. They don't enjoy them its mostly to grab customers attention. They hang on to them because it holds value thats it.
Guys I've been in the watch hobby a pretty long while and have made a few mistakes and have moved up and down price segments over the years and like many of you know sometimes the watch you think it's going to stick around often doesn't. Buy what you love and try your best to buy the watch first then the brand second to insure a long term relationship, don't get taught up with what holds value and what's hot and what's joe blow wearing. Like pawn shops, watch dealers buy low and sell high and many love trades especially for something that shadows the watch your giving up. I recently purchased the Zenith Liberty and I simply adore it I can wear all day long. I don't care about the price I care about the watch because it's stunning. Life is short so love your watch and don't let the price or any RUclips channel stop you doing so.
I want to branch out with the watches I purchase; but I can’t afford to lose some of the money that some brands / watches shed! Thus I have a few Rolex and just one Tag!
The funny thing is most people I know who own Rolex are far from rich. I know people who make $30k a year and have a Rolex. I also know people who make over $200k and have a Rolex. The majority I know who own a Rolex make 50-90k a year. I would guess those are the majority of Rolex owners. Still nice watches though. Bulletproof!!
You sort of nailed it with GS, I went into GS when it had a "small" following and now it has become way more main stream. I used to own Rolex and Omega etc. but moved away from Swiss just recently picked up a Pelagos and still own GS. I find Tudor to be a lot like GS most people do not know what you are wearing which I like. GS still the best bang for the buck no doubt.
Interesting you had that one Hublot that you'd consider. I also wouldn't go for a Hublot usually but for one model/line of partnership watches. They are those made in partnership with ICC and Cricket World Cups, solely because I love the game and that the strap stitching resembles that of the ball (check it out). Although I don't suppose cricket translates that much to the US 😂
Rolex: 1. I have money and I know nothing about watches. Rolex it is! 2. I don't wanna put my money in the bank, I get a rolex because I will earn money when I sell it 3. All the MLM scammers who look successful are wearing one, it's a symbol of success
The Term "Sports watch" does my head in!! Rolex is often worn by people who couldn't get out of a car or off a couch without farting and groaning let's be honest. Archie and Fredrico neither look overly sporty ....watches are just bloody watches you buy the best you can afford from those you genuinely like if you have an ounce of sense. I own an Omega Tudor and Rolex and the Tudor BB Bronze is my favourite but only of those I own. I feel like a sucker for buying a Rolex, I just fell for the hype and feel embarrassed wearing it....
IWC sponsors the Mercedes Formula 1 team competing against Tag Heuer and Hublot which are brands that usually appeals to racing afficionados, but IWC offerings look to be geared towards pilots. IWC has identity crisis
Absolutely gorgeous, but absolutely a disappointment when you turn it over and see the off the shelf Sellita movement. What a shame, especially for the price.
Good point that Rolex buyers typically don't care too much about the case finishing, movement, and the movement finishing since the movements don't have great movement decoration and have a closed caseback. Rolex watches are a status symbol for many
I have nostalgic affection for Omega because marketing really works. I was a teenager when Omega went to the moon with the astronauts. That was a pretty big deal at the time and I can still remember the full page magazine ads for the Speedmaster. Omega reminds me of a time before all TV dads were morons.
Plenty of Rolex buyers are into movements, just not into the aesthetics. Sorta like most spring drive buyers love the movement but couldn't care less about the movements looks (by definition an observable spring drive movement is carefully engineered to hide a certain feature). Rolex, for some models, has an iconic look nothing can compare to. I think some watch sellers have been so inundated that can't see it, or see it in other brands, any longer.
I dont think some of these brand designs are gonna age that well. I understand the technical horological significance of DeBethune but I dont think the design is gonna stand the test of time. I've got a no date to pick up from the ad as soon as the shops reopen... I've also just put my skx in tho get a ceramic bezel and domed crystal (That I supplied). All my watch collector friends love my seiko as do I. No.1 Everyday beater. Seiko modifications are a thing
Why is this a video? This should have been an audio podcast. Over 30 minutes of you talking showing.....you---only you. You have fallen into the trap of too many video makers who think that simply watching someone's face is interesting. It is not. The *_least_* you need to do is put up a string of pictures (< many!) of the watches you're talking about as you go along. As a novice, I don't even know how to spell a couple of the brands you went on about. Showing *good* , closeup examples of everything you're narrating would be -extremely helpful- necessary. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but the above should be obvious to anyone who creates videos---particularly two people who make _many_ videos _and_ run their own company.
Thanks for nice video and interesting points, I suggested some time ago for much shorter videos, but you make longer ones. Maybe you should pull up some images while talking for so long... it's getting boring. 37 minutes, OMG!
Here’s another stereotype I noticed anecdotally: Whenever someone posts a picture with a gun and a watch, with caption of “don’t tread on me” or something along those lines, then that watch is almost guaranteed to be a Seamaster. Not a Rolex. Not a Breitling. A Seamaster. Strangely, the same group of gun nuts aren’t drawn to the Speedmaster collection; somehow they are uniquely attracted to the Seamaster (either SMP 300 or Planet Ocean).

Brilliant
What does my SQUALE say about me? OK ciao!
A few good ones there
lol, this is great
Rolex has two stereotypes:
1) watch enthousiasts who appreciate the rich heritage and like the timeless design
2) spoiled rich kids, who were given one by daddy or just have too much money, and only recognise the front from the back of the watch because the fancy logo is on it...

4 slick slimy used car sales types
Next: Eye glasses stereotypes
Great video! Flash up 2-3 watch pics when you cover the brand next time. Also interested more in the stereotypes of Rolex users. Maybe even by Rolex type Daytona vs datejust etc.
Vacheron Constantin buyer stereotype, Old world European gentleman, drives a vintage Jaguar around the French Riviera, has his own wine cellar.
Sounds like a good time.
I kinda wish that was me...
Many Rolex owners buy the name, not the watch.
True, such is luxury goods
Totally agree...more so than any other brand!!!.
Much like the people who buy tag heuers lol
Nothing wrong with that. Rolex is the king of marketing. It is so successful that people for no apparent reason will imply they are bourgeois along with the owners. It's the only luxury watch brand many people recognize. I don't doubt that influences some people's purchasing decision.
John ¡! What happened? Lots of brands and No One picture of any iconic model of each brand??

I was going to write what you said. It would be nice to see examples of what you are talking about.
One of your best videos! Great lighthearted perspective on watch collecting!
For my collection, it is almost one watch per brand. So it was fun to hear about how the buyers of these watches is perceived by an industry insider. Thanks for the great video!

Love my Duro’s ( a black and a blue)!
Its funny how the you-tubers are scared of the seiko community

What about Bulgari or Tag? A finissimo or a Heuer Calibre 02 buyer for example.
What are stereotypes within the Rolex Steel Sports range? AP? Patek?
Fuente Fuente Opus X double Corona is my absolute favorite cigar, one I reserve for special occasions. Not sure about the hublot ;-)
Ramon Allones Giagantes, I would buy that watch
Opus X Lost City here. Nice smoke.
Fuente Hemingway Maduro👌🏼
Fantastic smoke
What about credor ? They are pretty awsome!
C’mon John. You softballed Rolex! haha. Pretty accurate otherwise
I like some Rolex though.

Really interesting vid John but next time please slip in some pictures of the watches discussed. Thanks.

If you are embarrased then sell your Rolex watch
Wow I have an IWC and drive a Jaguar. He hit that nail on the head.
IWC sponsors the Mercedes Formula 1 team competing against Tag Heuer and Hublot which are brands that usually appeals to racing afficionados, but IWC offerings look to be geared towards pilots. IWC has identity crisis
The Classic Fusion still knocks it out of the park. Gorgeous!!
Absolutely gorgeous, but absolutely a disappointment when you turn it over and see the off the shelf Sellita movement. What a shame, especially for the price.
Spot in with your stereotype of me and my Tudor. Not as common or as pretty as a Rolex, but rugged looks, nice and high quality.
Good point that Rolex buyers typically don't care too much about the case finishing, movement, and the movement finishing since the movements don't have great movement decoration and have a closed caseback. Rolex watches are a status symbol for many
Good topic!
I am a big fan of Anonimo. Their watches are tough , durable and unique in style and design. I also have a penchant for Italian design.
I have nostalgic affection for Omega because marketing really works. I was a teenager when Omega went to the moon with the astronauts. That was a pretty big deal at the time and I can still remember the full page magazine ads for the Speedmaster. Omega reminds me of a time before all TV dads were morons.

Ball watches are Really nice!!
what about Fortis and Ball watches ?
For me Hublot is actually great design. Not too much not too little in my eyes. Thanks for sharing......and you NEED to show the watches...please!
Did i sit through 30 minutes and no Oris?
I know
No clear cut stereotype, in my opinion.
John P Watches bronzesmiths who are obsessed with ecology and obscure denim manufacturers?
Naval Architect here. The stereotype is simple, we all wear dive watches and GMTs, the more obscure the better.
I dont think some of these brand designs are gonna age that well. I understand the technical horological significance of DeBethune but I dont think the design is gonna stand the test of time. Yes, Rolex might be conservative in their designs, but they will continue to be desirable for the foreseeable future. Also keep in mind that some of these manufacturers might not be around for much longer.
Good vid John, I appreciate the honesty, might piss off some but we must respect the opinions of others. Rolex is status IMO. You didn't mention AP, Panerai, or Richard Mille. These three stick out tremendously to me. Somewhat a touchy subject to the diehards. Thus why we have such variety. Maybe you should continue your discussion. 🥃
Stereotypes from RM owners - More money than sense. There ya go.
great talk but please put some pics of iconic watches...that lack of pics makes the video not as good as it could be....thanks and stay safe...
you forgot to put time marks for JLC
Interesting content John..... Keep it up, stay safe everyone
I hear a lot of people are really impressed with the new Tudor watches. Classic styling, good quality, and reasonable price.
I most like tool watches, field watches and robust ones. My everyday watch is since 50 years the brand Rolex. And though I love divers watches I like the material bronze. I always think of Jules Verne and 20,000 leagues under the sea, Steampunk and Doomsday watches.
Sinn and Blancpain stereotypes?
Stereotype from Russia: Zenith and Omega recognized as USSR brands of watches.
Think USSR had great camera called Zenith?
C'mon..Rolex is mostly about advertising to others about how much money you have (or had). It's less about appreciating the product for itself..
Oh . Seiko watches. You got this right . Smart watch people . They know how to spend money and get a good thing. I have a Seiko sarbo35 and love it . It is a great steel sports watch . I also have a Seiko skxo13 . I wear it at the beach and to pool parties . Anywhere around water. ISO certified . 200 m .
Seiko raised prices significantly and no more offering good price per $
@@alexeybarkovskiy9357 you are right.
whats your opinion on Oris fans I have a aquis red limited edition
I had to look up Alain Silberstein. Totally a watch a mentor of mine would wear. He is Jewish, he wears taupe cargo shorts and functional sandles despite being an *extremely* cultured gentleman.
The Silberstein pieces I saw in a quick google search actually appealed to me. They are playful without being gauche.
A Richard Mille for nice people, if you will.
Yet my Grail is a tri-colour 'sub-dial 1969 style Zenith El Primero, so according to your stats I may very well denigrate myself with a Hublot in days to come.
I think that you may've caused an existential crisis...
I like JLC because when people ask me to see my watch, they couldn't pronounce the brand(I need to look it up in the internet too).
Tissot?
are his teeth made after market? they look immaculate
What happened to Patek and Vacheron ????
I used to know a guy with an IWC who drove a VW Golf GTI 😁 (that was 20 years ago though)
what is the spelling of the second watch?
AP: Athlete, Hype Beast, Drug Lord, etc
How about summing up all the entry-level independent brands(Lang & Heyne, Dornbluth, Habring2, etc.) that sell watches under $8k?
The watches tend to be highly finished and quality in-house movements to that of a $10k watch. The buyer stereotypes are like De Bethune buyers but they don't want to break the bank and Grand Seiko buyers 5 years ago.
Good idea
Nice
I love my Grand Seiko's and hope to add more!!!!
Sinn owner stereotype: handsome, intelligent, charming...
Sinn makes a damn nice watch! Lucky you eh!!
Completely agree
I've got a no date to pick up from the ad as soon as the shops reopen... I've also just put my skx in tho get a ceramic bezel and domed crystal (That I supplied). All my watch collector friends love my seiko as do I. No.1 Everyday beater. Seiko modifications are a thing
John, what type of person who wears Hublot?
John P. Is there any value in any Invicta watch, or will there be in the future?
You missed Movado, Swatch and RGM or Roland Murphy thus the thumbs down. Especially Movado?
Why is this a video? This should have been an audio podcast. Over 30 minutes of you talking showing.....you---only you.

Thoughts on TagHeuer?
suburban tennis pro?
I own Lange, JLC, Rolex and Omega. Guess I must be schizophrenic. 😜
rolex buyers don't necessarily care about the specs, lol. spot on. can't stand the rollie buyers
50/50 on your stereotypes at best...very subjective topic.
Nice content
John P wants you to know.... that he knows engineers
u forgot nomos...
No breguet or bvglari
Vostok owners don't care what other people think. They bought it because they like it. :-)
every stereotype has strands of truth...
Zenith and Hublot in the same sentence?
You bastard!! 😶
WOW, nothing about Casio or G-Shocks
Take a shot every time you see his eyebrows jump up.
Rolex buyers own Rolex to impress others.
You missedORIS !
No clear cut stereotype IMO
How about Carl F. Bucherer?
@Tom The Fish True - I have a Manero and a Patravi - great watches
Popular in east Europe
Make good watches now, but really have no stereotype.
Whenever people see my Seiko 5, they automatically assume that I'm swinging serious lumber
Omega buyers are smart . We know this . Rolex ( I do own one ). Not so smart . More money then brains ! Lol
If the buyer buys an Omega at retail price, maybe he is not very smart.
Omega is a good watch but is very depreciated
Hugo Hernandez Exactly! If you're buying both at retail, then I must say the Rolex buyer is probably the smarter one.
@@user-dr7tb4xf4o Correct!
João Mendes that’s why you buy them preowned then your all set. 🤷♂️
Shit!
That is a great content...

Speak slower, you make anxious 😂😂😂
Thanks for nice video and interesting points, I suggested some time ago for much shorter videos, but you make longer ones. Maybe you should pull up some images while talking for so long... it's getting boring. 37 minutes, OMG!
iwc buyers drive a BMW
Here’s another stereotype I noticed anecdotally: Whenever someone posts a picture with a gun and a watch, with caption of “don’t tread on me” or something along those lines, then that watch is almost guaranteed to be a Seamaster. Not a Rolex. Not a Breitling. A Seamaster. Strangely, the same group of gun nuts aren’t drawn to the Speedmaster collection; somehow they are uniquely attracted to the Seamaster (either SMP 300 or Planet Ocean).
