THE BEST THAT NEVER WAS - Trailer

  • Philadelphia, Mississippi, was the site of the most notorious crime of the Civil Rights Era: the murder of Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner, three young men who had come to Philadelphia in 1964 to investigate a church burning. Marcus Dupree was born three weeks before the killings, and eventually would join the first class to go through integrated public schools in the state. By the time Marcus was establishing himself as the best high school running back in the nation - some say ever - Philadelphians white and black took pride in him, and in the fully integrated team that he led. He was the town's first shared joy, and the school's games became the first place where groups of whites and blacks ever came together as one community.
It would be naïve to believe that Marcus singlehandedly gave rise to a "New South." But it would be cynical to disbelieve that he did help bring change to a small town with a horrible past. It is here that the best of sport still resides - in its ability to tear down the isolation and separateness that permeate everyday life in America, and to give people something bigger than themselves to share, a way to transcend the distinctions that otherwise keep them apart. For this experience, Marcus feels blessed beyond any measure of wealth or fame that might have come his way had he fulfilled the promise of the professional career that eluded him.
PREMIERED Tuesday, November 9, 2010 on ESPN.

This movie inspired me to graduate college after watching it in 2014. After 2 years, i was failing my classes, didn’t know where I was in life.. this 30 for 30 hit me so hard mentally and emotionally, that made me realize my life didn’t have to end that way.. it inspired me to drop out and make me realize what i really wanted to do.. now, 4 years later, I’m gonna get my college degree and hopefully become something all because this 30 for 30 help me put my life in perspective

As a former 141 lb left halfback who was offered a scholarship to play for little Troy State in 1960, I have watched football all these years -- even coached briefly-- and I am convinced that Marcus Dupree was probably the greatest running back of all time. Yes, there was Bo and Herschel, and Jim Brown, but for sheer ability and strength and size, there was never another as gifted as Marcus Dupree. The pity of it was that he came from northeast Mississippi, a place in time where there was simply no understanding of his talent and therefore no proper handling or nurturing of it. Had he had proper guidance, he would have been more than "the best who never was."

    3 Adrien Peterson

4 Reggie Bush the most electrifying ever

The truly saddest thing about this is how badly Marcus was betrayed by his "Pastor" Ken Fairley who also became his agent. It was Fairley who convinced him that Switzer was mistreating him and Fairley who convinced him that if he left & transferred to Mississippi State he could play because Fairley was dealing under the table with MSU alumni.... unbeknownst to MSU. It ruined his collegiate career and his timing in going pro.

Under NCAA rules if an athlete transfers he/she has to wait at least a year before playing again. Marcus left Oklahoma halfway through the 1983 season before learning he couldn't play again until 1985. So he turned pro with the USFL with Ken as his agent. Some people think Ken engineered the whole thing.
