I agree these two had done fabulous job produced many artists like Janet Jackson, Alexander O'neal, S.O.S. Band, Human League with "Human", and more in the 80s. I just heard Millie "Automatic" don't know if these two produced but it sounds like
I'ma put it here.....if it weren't for Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Antonio "LA" Reid & Babyface, or Quincy Jones......you wouldn't have Teddy Riley, The Neptunes, Timbaland, Dr. Dre, DeVante Swing, Jermaine Dupri, Organized Noize, DJ Premier, RZA.....even Erick Sermon
Quincy Jones passed the baton to Teddy Riley when he recommended him to Michael Jackson for "Dangerous". Teddy was already making waves. When MJ needed something more of the times, Q called TR.
You've got Teddy in the wrong spot. He was more of a contemporary to Jam & Lewis and LA & Babyface. All the other guys are the generation after. DeVante, Timbaland, and The Neptunes come from Teddy basically.
These Two Are The Greatest Ever! They Were Also Last Of The Funk Soul R&B Rock Bands,The "Original 7", The Time. Love Their 80's Stuff! Underrated On Many Levels....
I was inspired by these guys back in the day to become a producer. Since it was only me, I learned and mastered it all: Programming beats, playing the keys, writing the songs, arranging the backgrounds, engineering, mixing and mastering the tracks.
This video was uploaded 15 years ago but the actual video may have been made 20 years before the video was uploaded. Boy how time flies I remember Donnie Simpson in my youth and I’m 45.
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis are great producers, with a real musical background and brought out the best from Cheryl Lynn, Change, Cherrelle, Thelma Houston, Alexander O'Neal and Janet Jackson back in the 80s. I have the so much respect for these guys. Love their sound and always had!
They are to Production . . . what Michael Jackson was . . . to The Entertainment Industry. Jam & Lewis are The Greatest of All Time ( bar none ) check the Discography & Hit List & Songwriting & Production Credits.
Thank you for the person who recorded this moment...We get to see first hand what these 2 geniuses do in their office...They don't make such talented quality dudes like this too often! They invented a funky sound that will be around for generations!
I remember saw this back in the day at my brother's house with my ex-girlfriend .She passed away in 2006 , RIP but this video bought me back to that time we were together .
That why it sounds crap now if you believe you can replace a whole analogue studio into a laptop, digital has lower resolution , a tape mixture is basically endless resolution
i look at their production discography, and I'm like..how the hell did they have time to complete so many songs..but I imagine if you have a consistent schedule, concrete due dates, eliminate drama & distractions.. “Write,” encourages Jimmy. “If only one out of a hundred will be good, then write a hundred…Songwriting is something you’ve got to want to do. Money isn’t what it’s about. It’s a God-given talent you have to use.” I'm charged. I'm thinking I can focus on writing one hit a week, for the rest of my life, I can become a fraction of their legacy, which is cool with me, that's still major status. all I need is one to hit, and everything will change.
Maaaan, that was cool as hell!!.. seein' JJ actually live in a studio put'n together those patent beats.. seriously good stuff right there!.. JJ & Terry's sound is so unique.. I can always tell when those 2 are behind a production... it's "that" sound!
When they helped SOS , that album was one of the best ever made in my opinion! I’m a synth guy & love bass from it! Always loved the time keyboards sounding like James brown horns! Prince Jam Terry Monte are my cool cats! Btw I’m hearing fishnets black pantyhose! For those who don’t have an ear for music!😮😅😂
Its crazy how jam n lewis are so in sync with each other. Theyre remind me of some disney characters. Especially when they both slide back describing the faders. They werent even looking at eachother
Home recording gear is pretty affordable nowadays. Of course, not the kind they're using in the video. That kind (analog) is still pretty expensive. But you can do pretty much the same with virtual instruments and effects - That's what they call working "in the box".
I learned how to play the keys by listening to Jam and Lewis songs. Their genius was using a lot of the same chord progressions on multiple hit songs. So once you learned one you learned like 5 or 6. Like I'm only human is almost the same as Ralph T. Sensitivity and Come Back to Me Janet Jackson. I'm definitely from the School of Jam and Lewis. #respect
To this day i haven't figured out the secret sauce behind their chords and chord progressions. You're right, they really have their own signature kind of chords. Wish there was a tutorial on just that.
They already had a hit album with the SOS Band before Prince fired them. Prince found out, then let them finish The Time tour, then he fired them. But they were already doing music before this while with the band. They were on their way to becoming huge before they were kicked out of The Time.
I love the creative end of making real music. Would love to c footage of them actually doing a recording with an artist. These guys basically created the music of my youth. A fun time in music.
I say the same thing I said about Janet Jackson's Control album and Alexander O'Neal nearly 40 years ago in high school. Sounds great.... just like all Prince records did back then.
..and for those of us who overthink, constantly tweak, seeking perfectionism.."When asked how they know when a song is finished, Jimmy replies, “It’s an instinct I guess. But we tend not to overdo songs. The fact that we write so many songs might be part of the reason. You can work and rework songs and music but you can never recapture that first day of inspiration…spontaneity is important in music.” that's like Van Gogh, finishing each work in one sitting, 'one broad stroke'.
That joy of recording and mixing never gets old!!
These cats owned the 80's!!!! Salute the legendary Flyte Tyme brothers James "Jimmy Jam" Harris & Terry Lewis!!!

@@gjd1755 the late Bruce nazaran produced mille Scott
They just got the BET lifetime achievement award.
They have produced so many songs. Years later and I’m STILL discovering music they produced. Their collection and catalog is CRAZY. Wow
The are the 2nd most successful producers of all time. Elvis's producer is 1st, they are 2nd, and the Beatles producer is 3rd.

Disagree regarding Teddy Riley.

Dr. Dre was coming up at the same time as Teddy Riley and a few others.
