- In collaboration with partner Terry Lewis, Jimmy Jam emerged as one of the most successful producers and writers of the 1980s, his long history of R&B, club, and pop hits reached its pinnacle on a series of smash records for Janet Jackson. Born in Minneapolis on June 6, 1959, he first met Lewis in high school, and together they formed Flyte Tyme, a popular Twin Cities band which in 1981 evolved into “the Time”, a group led by Prince protégé Morris Day.
Jam and Lewis scored and produced countless R&B hits for the likes of Gladys Knight, Patti Austin, the Human League, Herb Alpert, New Edition, Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blidge, Vanessa Williams, and more.
The multiple Grammy Award winning duo has a long connection with Roland - noted for their early use of the TR-808 Drum Machine, which was used in most of their productions.
We visited with Jimmy to capture his first impressions of our new D-05 Boutique Synthesizer. Jimmy also reminisces his love for the power of the original D-50.

I STILL HAVE MY D50 after 25 years and love it as much as I did when I first got. I had the honor and privilege with working under Jam and Lewis when I was in Sounds of Blackness. 😘😘😘
How are you, were you really in sound of black
Sound of blackness
Do you still play it
Probably one of the greatest record producer duos(with Terry Lewis) of the 1980s. It's that Roland D-50 that made us dance, nod our heads and shake our bottoms. :D
I luv that JJackson Control album, that riff Jim played he called Minneapolis is from that album. Even when he played that simple opening run with the bell sound I could hear JJ/TL straight away. I'm not convinced JJ/TL got us exicted with any synth, it was the arrangement, quality and feel of what they played. If Roland synths were not available to them, JJ/TL would still create great grooves with other kit.
True, musicianship surpasses gear by far! I should have said that in the beginning!
ERRRRR You forgot about LA Reid & Babyface!!?!!?!? Then Teddy Riley & the late Gene Griffin!!!!
Not disagreeing with you, as I am a fan of LaFace myself and the New Jack Swing Kings. I love them all, but you should note they all played in different parks, even crossing over in the other's signature style (Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin's New Jack Swing and LaFace with R&B and "Slow Jams").
Tony Lancer THE best. no competition...
Jam always chose amazing presets throughout the records he produced, especially key and bell sounds
He writes his own music and plays all his own instruments including the drums..you are the man ..he has lived in Sicily Italy for the last 15 years ,and has respect for people ..big love from Manchester england
ha ha, that's Minneapolis he says! come back! get this town bumping again please! and it can still sound like 1987, that's coming back!
Jimmy Jam's track record is f'n ridiculous man.
About 15 years ago, my uncle found a Roland D-50 at a goodwill. He got it for 20 dollars. It was missing the power cord and had no sounds so he made a make shift power cord and with research I figured out how to load sounds into it with midi and sysex. The greatest find ever!
I need that 808 Snapback Hat
Jam and Lewis were the best!
Wish Roland would make new full size versions.
I just cant see the demand. If a Pro wants the full sized unit they would get a sh keyboard or the D550 or even the V-synth. Why has it got to be the full size when there are plenty for sale already? Also if Roland put full sized ones out there is no way on this earth they would have the same build quality as the originals which are built like tanks. The selling point is the small size, I already have the full size but I'm even tempted by the novelty of the small sizes.
Hi Littlegee, I already own a D50 and I am a pro.
Even though I own an original, they are a nightmare to program without the PG programmer and many people I know would buy a new full size version if produced.
If these little versions work for you, I totally understand.
Like you I like the small one, but without an editor its the same without the programmer.
Best wishes Dwight.
I think they will come up with an editor like their vst version of the D50.
If they do I will buy one.
The little one sounds cleaner than the original and loads sysex sounds.
The only beef I have with Roland is why the can't make a full analog poly.
I own a Jupiter 8 and I love it still, but it is not worth the kind of money that people are paying.
They should remake some of the old models to stop the nonsense and give new young musicians a chance to use and experience real analog like Moog just did.
I am happy the did the thing with Studio Electronics, so there is hope:)
The legendary producer also a big D50 fan!
0:00 Who else thought that Al B. Sure's Just A Taste of Lovin' Is All I Need was about to drop? LMAO!!!!!
Rite
I think this is the first time I've seen him in regular clothes.
Back in the late 80's, I had a choice of purchasing a Korg M1 or a Roland D-50, and I went with the Korg. I still believe that was the best decision. About 10 years later added a Roland XP-30 to the Korg M1 and Ensoniq ASR-10. Nice instrument with a great history, and fan following though.
And as Jimmy Jam mentioned about the smaller keys, I too started out with a Casio and it was the CZ-101. Still have it to this day.
No wrong choice there. The M1 and D50 were stalwarts..
I went D-50. Friend had the M-1. Emu Proteus 1 beat both.
@@scrollingmadness -
The M1, the EMU, D-50, and I'll throw in DX7 had their strengths and weaknesses. None were the perfect workforce. So, stop the madness.
Just drove past the Edina Flyte Tyme location and it hasn't been torn down yet! Hoping beyond hope they leave it standing!
next they should have a 90s producer discussing their Roland JD-800 resurrection
Not even Pad or Bell sounds. I have Lead, Synth Brass and Harmonic Sounds on my D - 50 which sounds till today very unique :-).
First of all...THAT HAT!! I Need it, NOW!!!! Then what the heck is he playing?!?!?! I NEED That too. Man RUclips!!!! To be free, you sure do cost me a ton$$$$$ 😆
Oh....it's a commercial.
OMG! I love what he say about not wanting to reprogram sounds! Just want it to already be there! Exactly! 1:42
Yeah, nothing wrong with that. 😅 Synthesizers seem to have two markets: *'synthesists'* for whom exploring the gear and discovering new sounds is part of the experience and/or performance; and *'keyboardists'* who honestly just want inspiring sounds so they can get on with what they're really good at. I'm still figuring out where I am in that spectrum…
Albums made on older synths (without presets) typically employed synth programmers to assist the producer/keyboardist with creating the sounds. Some of those 'programmers' later made synthpop history, such as Jan Hammer and Harold Faltermeyer.
where he got his 808 cap i want it!!!
I was hoping you would do a piece on the TR 808, I always love the S.O.S. band and all of their songs, and know this piece was used in a lot of their work, absolute genius!
LEDGEND!!!!!!!
Where's Terry Lewis? That Roland 808 ballcap is cool.
WOW!!!...That's What's Up...Dope...One Love Fam...
Seeing him without a suit is strange
Anyone know the name of the preset of the bass sound 2.28 into the video?
Is there a software editor for it yet ?, if not there should be asap not another pg500 type box. If people give up the mish mash for this instrument i think its a small thanks to give in return ;-)
I am of the same mind...I ain't got time for that tweaking when I get hit by inspiration. Grab n Go. Tweaking is reserved for post production.
Man Jimmy's always doing keyboard and tech demos. How come Terry never shows us any bass techniques and tricks?? IMHO he was one of the most funkiest bass players back in the day. Does he even play bass anymore?
@rraykwon -
Terry does play bass on a few records, but most of the time the bass parts are left up to Jimmy or they'll bring another bass player in. Jimmy is the music guy, and Terry is the business guy. Another creative form they'll employ is Jimmy would work on a song, call Terry in with fresh ears, give a suggestion, then leave.
From what both have stated, it has been successful.
Terry is the vocal and lyrics producer.. And, yes, he's a mean fonky azz bass player.
@@thespadestable Nah nah nah Terry Lewis wasn't the LA Reid of Flyte Tyme, man. Terry Lewis studied Bootsy hence why he played the sh!t of the eBass.
@@EIrizarryMadOfficial -
You's people's emotionalism never ceases to amaze me. Where in my statement did I say Terry was not a proficient bass player?
Both parties have long shared with their fans how they've delegated responsibilities which has been the key to their success since the early 80's. Terry handles the business side. He's responsible for the contracts, the hiring, the firing, and making sure the money side is where it needs to be. Jimmy handles the music/creative side and he handled the interviews. During an interview they had on the original Arsenio Hall Show they joked about how songs came about with Terry sticking his head in the room and adding a missing piece, then go back to his office.
But you know, with the "it has to be all about me" mindset, that's viewed as not having a big enough footprint for the sake of getting one's just accolades.
@@thespadestable Well you're definitely wrong as hell anyway ..Terry is not just the businessman...He is the songwriter and vocal producer. Who told you that ridiculousness??
Ive got a Roland FA06 that has a lot of the classic D50 sounds. On other synths I usually tweak sounds but I don’t need to with the FA06 I don’t need to
Je suis d'accord avec lui .
It would be good if Roland offered the cloud vst as part of the purchase of the boutique or at least had a lower subscription deal.
Sounded like he was playing "Just Good Friends" @ 2:26
Jimmy Jam 💜
being jimmy and being one of the greatest producers of our time and not knowing what layering 8bit sampled waveforms with simple subtractive synthesis is, is a mystery to me. jam /lewis -- flyte tyme forever ! the breath-waveform in "i miss u much" is prob d50 too
Lol.. That last preset/tone was used on Janet's(Jackson's) "That's the way love goes" song...
Come on Jimmy pick him out ,he loves music and needs your help...big love to you..
Its a real joy to have the roland mc808 controlling all the boutiques.
I heard Come Back to Me, Lately and If. :)
@rolandChannel where can I purchase that hat??!!!!
please tell me what is the presset from 2:25 to 2:33 ?? it sound WooooW ???
Karol Konopa ikr
Legend
these new age FL STUDIO kids dont know about that TR 808
Hold This L. Debarge I learned about the 808 when I was 11
The intro sound is the intro of Vision of Love by Mariah Carey A lower note tho. Signature D-50 sound.
Jimmy jam I want you to look at blue redman at magazzino studios he’s fresh and raw ,he doesn’t have a television at home ,please look at him ..you are truly number one ,we all love you ..he’s was born in st Mary’s Manchester england, and he’s ready to go..I beg you to help ..regards to you

Pinda Kaas the truth
wow man that D 5 is WAY TOO BIG
That bell sound though lol
Justin MacKay You just had a post shitting on this synth and now you're complementing the sounds?
Haut Strange I was being sarcastic lol and don't take so much offence if it works for you that's cool, it was directed to Roland to stop making so many boutique modules and explore more. Jeesh.
Justin MacKay They're basically printing money with these Boutiques, so don't expect them to stop. And lots of people love them. The D-05 in particular is great. What's so bad about finally being able to have a very close reproduction of classic synths that are way out of your average persons price range on the used market? All, you seem to be taking more offense that's anyone here.
Disco Track
They should have made this at least 6 note poly. That's the minimum way to change three note chords without the previous chord getting cut off!!
They have, depending on the mode it is 8 or 16 voices.
1:42 B I N G O
sooo much bad advice in forums telling producers they need to make their own sounds scratch_Starting w/ the Init patch_fvck that
we need guys who love to construct sounds from scratch_we need guys to tweak presets to their own_& we need guys to take those presets & make magical arrangements/productions
too many guys follow that bad advice_get a synth_try to make their own sounds_get bored/uninspired_or get lost in the tweaking & never release anything official_just gimmie the presets
💫Im no Eric Pershing_he's a sound design genius_what I can be is a next-generation JimmyJamTerryLewis/BabyFaceLAReid/Mariah-Walter/Puffy-Hitmen..etc. everyone has a purpose💫
if you can't trust the opinion of "LEGOWELT AND JIMMY JAM!" THEN YOU ARE REALLY TRIPPIN you need to not bother even saying anything you jus being petty they are 2 people that would know this synth better then anyone both are fucking synth WIZARDS in 2 completely opposite side of the musician music world and legowelt wouldn't lie he would be honest with his opinion hahahaha!
I really dont care what they do or say about it. Im talking as a musician who wants you all to stop creating rehashed sounds and explore beyond that. Most of the sounds we all love to hear like "classic" bass leads and bell presets i hope one day become cheesy and lame. Thats just how i see it now.
Justin MacKay People like you make modular users look bad. You can do your own thing without unloading your self-righteous baggage on everyone else
Haut Strange wanting more from Roland because we've now experienced modular does not make euro users look bad it makes Roland look lazy. I just want more features that's all ;) didn't mean to piss off everyone lol.
Justin MacKay I meant you specifically make euro rack users look bad with that attitude. Not everything has to cater to a certain demographic. Modular is not the end all be all. I, and many others, prefer hardware and that's not going to change. If you want modular, get a modular synth. Don't expect companies to make everything compatible with a rack or to only make modular synths. It's kind of ridiculous.
Still missing the point....If its ridiculous than why use Studio Electronics and malekko to help them on one their only analog products? Its seems whatever staff they have aren't confident in their analog capabilities. The Boutiques would be better if they were compatible. So. They cheaped out. I think its crazy that you are so content with what they are selling you and not thinking about how this could integrate well with euro. And the fact they rely on their past way to much.... I guess we just disagree....
fingers bigger than keys LMAO!!!! Fuck a bell sound!!!
I dont like how Karyn White used Terry_granted he had many options & her chose her too
but I see very obvious situations where the girls are using the producer's heart to boost her career
we've got big hearts by default 'cause we're born sensitive to music_thus we pursue it_but girls see this is as weakness
& only when that sense turns into riches_they'll try to manipulate our hearts to bring them into the riches for themselves_we gotta see thru that shii tho'
Bruno brought it back..Lizzo copied Bruno, but then resorted back to easy trap..someone's gotta carry the torch..
Huh?
1:18
#StudyTheGreats
He definitely got payed for this 1
Oh and where has the Dr series drum machines gone. I'm waiting for an upgrade ;), leave the synth stuff to the analog/ euro makers, it's cooler, it sounds better and it way funner to make music with. Bring back some unique analog (not Moog based synth) Your a great company there's no need to copy. Stand out... Just sayin
I understand you need to make a 4 minute video but talking about the little keys being good? come on..
Shut up
Talking trash to Jimmy Jam....
Wild and Loose
Quit trying to sell me pieces of shit, Roland I love you but you let me down constantly. This is the time to come up with "new" sounds not the same generic shit I've heard on records for the last 30+years. Instead, "where's that flute sound" pretty sad and pathetic, seriously what happened to this company...
You have plenty of 'new' sounds in vsts, too many to list and Roland released the V-Synth, Integra, Jdxa and System 8 for modern synth sounds which I don't think can go much further really, you have enough sound exploration in those synths to do anything you like. If you don't already own one then you have no grounds to argue about their current technology. However, there is still a massive market for classic sounds, those sounds still sound great after 30 years so there is a good reason for the demand. You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to new sounds.
I understand where your coming from and yes i have owned and still own many Roland synths, its just when you dive into eurorack and see knobs and functions that do things that none of these generic synths can possibly do it upsets me. Cause i love this company but wish they would change things up a bit. Its just, i don't understand why they decide not to take full advantage of some of the ideas floating around in that euro synth world is beyond me.
Heres an idea: use your power as a consumer and don't buy the products.
My power isn't consuming its making music, and you should take that advise tho and not buy the product, i think this is the problem and why music is getting boring and stale.
dude your one micro opinion, they obviously have had enough demand from people who loved this in order to make business move into reissuing this to where it made sense to them business wise ,so you can save your jaded opinions
