I just busted out laughing😂😂😂😂, it’s so funny that they were able to do this. This an example of the classic saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Oh my ... I love it!!! New subscriber ...
I noticed the similarities and it is vividly shown here which confirmed my thought. Susbscribed
Brilliant commentary. i feel like I should be paying you for these jewels.
Wow all this time I've listened and played those songs all the years never realized there the same chords just a different tempo thank you for a truly eye opening lesson
Thanks my friend. Anytime!
Good observation!!! Never really paid attention to the similarities!!!
You’re a super talented musician and play very well…so glad to see someone like yourself describe what I was hearing back in the late 80s-90s …similar chords and melodies in different songs by various artists…but the music was so sweet, like a recipe to a tasty soup 😂
Come to think of it…a lot of Janet’s songs sounded like the SOS band hits lol…but I loved it all, and still do….go Jimmy Jam + Terry Lewis !
And the same can be said for Babyface …lots of his produced songs sounded the same but just tweaked a little for different artists…but they were all super jams indeed…what a winning formula ❤
Very nice how u compared and highlighted the similarities in those music selections btw I luv all those tunes and I luv hearing u play
Excellent...this is a Songwriting Hall of Fame Formula
Beautifully played. I've heard the same. You could have played Human, by Human League and Hearsay by Alexander O'Neal, Janet's That's the way love goes. However, there are many exceptions, Cheryl Lynn's Encore, SOS Band ' Weekend Girl', Cherelle's "Saturday Love", Sound of Blackness' Optimistic, Janet & Michael's Scream, Janet's Could've known better, etc
this deserves millions of views
Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed hearing you play these for comparison :-) wishing you a happy holidays season! :)
Thank you friend. You have a wonderful and blessed holiday season as well. Please be sure to like and subscribe.
Excellent exposition on this material
Thank you my friend!! Appreciate the feedback!!
As you said; It's a Testament to their 'genius' that they can re-interpret the same progression well enough to produce different, useful, iterations, (and as you also intimated; once you get to a certain level of Musicianship, you can begin to dissect thus disclose the workings of said music)
Wow that's amazing.
The Human League’s “Human” is very similar to this group too.
Yep that’s another one they wrote too...after I made this one I was like “dang...I should have added that one”. Good ear my friend!!
@@BlackShopan really appreciate it. thanks!
Alexander O’Neals if u were here tonight? Not sure if Jimmy and Terry produced sounds like them tho
@@miketubre5055 AO was definitely an artist they worked with.
Also the SOS Band
Love all their old stuff so much.
Only three of these songs are actually in the same key: tender love, can you stand the rain and on bended knee are in Ab major. Sensitivity is in Db major and come back to me is f minor.
My friend thanks for the feedback. I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to respond. Always great to talk with someone who understands what is under the music. I will agree and disagree with you on a few things. I will drop the use of 7ths and 9ths for this response when talking about harmony…but just know if I state the root chord e.g., D-Flat, that if there is a 7th or 9th associated with, you can imply that I mean that.
I will AGREE with you that “Can You Stand the Rain” is in the Key of A-flat Major, and “Come Back to Me” is in the key of “F minor.” Both of those keys have four flats and are “relative” to each so for notation purposes they are the same key; BUT the chord structure and melody is the deciding factor as to which key (A-flat Major or F Minor) it lends itself to. I would also agree with you that “Sensitivity” is in the key of D-flat Major.
Where I would disagree with you on is despite the keys these songs are written in, Jam and Lewis relied heavy on four chords for most of their songs. “Come Back to Me” and “Sensitivity” as you point out are written in different keys, BUT despite that…both songs proceed with the same D-flat major, E-Flat, and F minor chord progression. I could have added another song in the mix “Human” by “Human League” another song they wrote…same progressions. “Can You Stand the Rain” although it starts out with the F minor chord, it progresses to the D-Flat Major chord, then to the E-Flat, and back to F minor. Same bird, just a different feather.
I would disagree with you “On Bended Knees.” That song is not in D-Flat major or A-Flat major; it is in the key of E-Flat Major (3-Flats). But again, Jam and Lewis, despite the key, relied on their comfort progression of D-Flat, E-Flat, and F Minor. The opening three chords of the song is just. Same thing with “Tender Love.”
Whether intentional or not, Jam and Lewis played around these keys to accommodate their artist vocal ranges, yet they still managed to stay with their comfort zone of D-Flat, E-flat, F Minor etc... progression. Check out some of their video interviews; they will be the first to tell you they did.
The piano versions I played are in the KEY true to the recorded versions of the songs by the artist…so I would disagree that any was transposed. If I stated they all were written in the same key…that was error, the point I was making was despite the key on paper, most these songs rely on the same CHORD progressions so to the ear they sound as if they are in the same key.
@@BlackShopan I shouldn't have said transposed, I was just saying that based off your comment that they were all in Db. After listening to on bended knee and not going off memory, it does start in Eb then modulates first to E then to F. I agree with everything you said in the video except that one comment. Which you obviously didn't mean to say.
@@wiltisdabest …it’s all good my friend. Nothing personal taken…just love talking music. Do you play? If so, I’ll check out your videos.
@@BlackShopan @BlackShopan I do/did, took one year at university. Don't play as much anymore. Don't make videos though. I like to see other musicians analysis of certain music (new jack swing, R&B, neo soul), which is how I probably got recommended your video. I also use videos like the ones you make to play by ear, as it's easier having just the piano to work from then all the other stuff in the actual recorded track, just saves time.
Theres more songs they did that fit into this batch too including Ralph Tresvant's Cant By Me Love.
Can you clarify some more how they are similar harmony wise? How are the chord structures similar? Beautiful playing.
I luv Jame & Lewis. I actually thinnk the Ralph's "Sensitivity " is more based on Janet's "Someday is Tonight" Would you play those in a comparo?
Break down on similarities between La/Face songs next pleeeeeaaassee!
Dam..... the similarities are endless.
This is dope bro!
Can you do one of these videos for Prince Music?
Haha. You could throw in Human by Human League too ❤😉
Very true!
