On August 6, President Trump issued an executive order prohibiting transactions with the video-sharing app TikTok. His order said that because TikTok is owned by the Beijing-based company ByteDance, the app could pose national security and privacy risks to users in the US.
But the Trump administration’s targeting of TikTok marks a departure from America’s traditional position on internet governance and online free speech. And it also comes at a time when the concept of a global internet itself is under threat.
Today a growing number of countries are pursuing various forms of internet sovereignty - from Russia building a walled-off “intranet,” to India regularly shutting down its internet in areas of social unrest, to some European nations introducing a “right to be forgotten” from search engines.
All these trends point in the direction of a “splinternet,” where your experience of the internet increasingly depends on where you live, and the whims of the ruling parties there. As we explain in this video, that’s a tough environment for an app like TikTok, which became globally successful almost immediately, and which connects people from around the world in hyper-personalized but often international subcultures.
With the excesses of the open internet visible daily (see: foreign election interference, data breaches, misinformation and hate speech, and domestic and corporate surveillance), the countries that do support a free internet will have to work hard to secure its future. But they may have to do it without the United States.

The main problem I can imagine is all tic tockers will move to RUclips now
Ban them!
Or, even worse, they will come to Vine (if we somehow resurrect it)
Yeah lol
.
Don’t need them to come here
I don’t have tik tok and I’ll likely never get it. What I hate most about tik tok is it’s just mindless scrolling, there short videos and the majority of them are garbage. I enjoy a good laugh but tik tok is multiple of the same types of “laughs”. RUclips has longer videos and helpful, fun, educational and interesting videos like this one.
I tought the same too before actually triyng it for myself. At firt I needed to personalize my feed and put on every interest that I have: books, science, art, history, kpop, language learning, meme and stufs like that. And my feed slowly became a really good feed with high quality videos. But it's still very addicting tho, but honestly youtube too is very addicting to me.
You have to wait a day or two before the algorithm gets what you like. If you are getting mostly garbage videos, then the personalization element they talked about in this video didn’t kick in yet. It takes a little patience before it gets enjoyable, delayed gratification

COUNTER ARGUMENT: The reason China banned them is because those companies refused to follow China's regulations, whereas the US banned Huawei and Tiktok, etc, with ZERO proof of any wrong doing. TikTok was caught monitoring clipboards, and literally seeing every key you typed (when Apple had an update that showed when user data was being used by apps). ByteDance got in legal trouble when it didn't follow Xi's ("president" of China) information sharing guidelines (they had to apologize and say they won't do it again essentially) awhile back, so how are they going to claim that they're not sharing information with China? As a conservative who firmly believes in uncensored internet, I think it's critical not allowing foreign governments to have information on future presidents and senators sitting in a database. And I think what Trump is doing with forcing them to sell their US TikTok operations (which Vox conveniently ignored this fact) is a good way of keeping the internet uncensored and not having US citizen's data in China's hands. This entire video was just a convenient sailing of the ship through this situation that fitted their agenda, I only watch Vox's videos to see what the economic elites are wanting the public to know, and therefore knowing where the future is heading.

When china bans all other apps in their country. Some are crying for ban on tik tok which is from China.
They never mentioned why TikTok was banned in the US though...
The closest thing they said about that was Trump was taking revenge for covid
Trade war against China and the rise of the Chinese crytocurrency which has the potential to overthrow the US Dollar as the dominant currency.
Plus the fact China bans everything from the US so why can't they ban Chinese owned media? Seems completely fair to me.
Because its owned by the Chinese government and they can spy on us and give China it its a big national security problem also China is know for hacking the us we are in a cyber war with them rn

At 6:32 you Show the Internet shutdowns in 2019 according to your source. However if u look at the linked document it never shows Germany having an internet lockdown. Instead the UK, according to access now had one shutdown. However in your world map you highlighted Germany as well as France for example who never had an internet shutdown, but leave out the UK. Is that a fault of yours, or am I just not getting it? Because, if this is false I strongly recommend you correct the video!

Vox is becoming radical left as long as they can throw Trump’s presidency
Michael Lo Vox is not even close to “radical left.” They’re still center-left and probably better described as neoliberals.
You are completely right! If they are using visuals and animations to display data, then they should be just as accurate. I just spend a small hour trying to figure out if my country(West-Europe) was involved in this subversive practice. It wasn't.
the way i understood the graphic this isn´t showing who had an internet shutdown but simply different fractions of the splinternet they mentioned

Tiktok is oddly addicting, in a way other popular social media apps can't replicate for me. I usually open other apps to retain the information that I was looking for, then I close it. With Tiktok, I literally spend hours swiping through videos. It's hard to get tired of it.

The problem with banning Tiktok: none.
The problem is that many people will realize that they aren't really that talented.
The problem is that you probably wouldn't hate TikTok unless a bunch of people said so because everyone plays into heard mentally as the typical edgy Reddit user you are
