Today’s phones are hard to put down. Push notifications buzz in your pocket, red bubbles demand attention, and endless distractions sit at your fingertips. It can feel impossible to pull away from. But that’s kind of the point. When people talk about the “attention economy,” they’re referring to the fact that your time and attention are the currency on which today’s applications make money. Because apps profit off of the total time you spend on their platform, there’s a strong incentive to use psychological tricks to keep you endlessly hooked. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Tristan Harris, who runs Time Well Spent, is working to create a world where platforms can more honestly respect their users’ time.

the slot machine and pull to refresh analogy blew my mind
Same, and it applies to more than just phones. I just realized that this is exactly why I'm addicted to refreshing the RUclips home screen, Google News, or Facebook on my desktop browser: I'm pulling a lever, hoping for interesting suggestions or content to randomly show up.
It's not an analogy, that's really the way it's designed. That's scary
I'm shook

I never ever refresh my page unless I've looked for a long time and nothing interesting comes up.
I barely do it anymore.
MY JAWS LITERALLY DROPPED AT THAT. its such a simple detail yet its sooooo addicting and effective
Currently watching this on my phone.
Cjai yep
that's the ultimate irony of it all.
Cjai me too
Cjai does anyone actually use autoplay? (Excluding watching series/playlists)
Zonofv 1 there's no option to switch off autoplay in a playlist, is there?
Now they give us dark mode so we can use it when we’re about to sleep
Now we use dark mode all the time.

I just realized that RUclips has infinite scroll.... I'm in trouble.

Companies are also addicted to apps! Seems like you can't do anything these days without having a smartphone to buy a product or shop in their store. Pretty soon people won't be able to get on a bus or buy a coffee without having to pull out your phone and use their app. Feel sorry for people, mainly senior citizens, who don't own smart phone and feel like they can't function in society, and therefore feel obsolete.
Already happens in australia you need to use your phone to sign in to shops and stuff

Working retail, now realizing how far they have pushed digital use on every aspect of our lives, it's just horrible.
I appreciate how Instagram now has this feature of "You've done! You've scrolled the new contents of today" or something like that so I can actually see what I've been missing on without spending too much time scrolling on three days old posts. oh hi
haha good one
I found that notifications were making me anxious and on edge. I ended up going to my settings and turning off notifications for Snapchat, Instagram, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, etc. Ended up feeling a lot better🤷🏾♀️
tigana Definitely and oddly (one of the minority) the same, I got so irritated on the (social media notifications) that I want to rip them apart.
Me too! I feel much better I'm not worried about what I'm missing out on.
After long years my old phone broke so when getting new one I had to get smart phone. First rule I gave myself was; don't use smart phone for social media. After 3 years I am still following this rule and I rarely ever check smartphone. I mostly use apps to learn new language and sudoku. I can easily go to the store or go out for a walk without a phone. That being said I am not against social media but I do only check it for an hour a day ; sometimes 2 hours if I get caught up into chatting. But that's as far as I will go. And I only do it on PC; so if I go to lay down I don't sleep late because of obsession with social media or anything. I never developed it. Alerts are silly concept to me. Why would I be told when to check what's new constantly if I can check it once a day at same time every day? It's like someone would be keep poking me about random little stuff being annoying. Sure tell me what's up but don't be annoying with it. It's like people have double rules; one for some situations and one for other situations. Even though it's same annoyance. Like if person is keep bugging you it's not fine; but if alerts are keep on poking your attention it's fine? weird.
tigana I don't use a smartphone I use a flip phone now and my Computer.
Yeah same, like after a while I turned it off cause every single time i would get so anxious and it was really affecting my studies
Now I feel bad scrolling down to see comments.

Reading physical books again has been a good way of cutting down on my phone usage and is something I'd recommend. It sounds so obvious but you don't realise how much you use your phone til you stop.
oabuseer no matter what you do at a certain point you will ALWAYS have at least one massive time sink. For me its about making it useful. (Its either school work or video games...lots of video games.)
Oh yea sometimes I read a book so deeply I forgotten that it's night time.
I also get deeper into stories and enjoy my reading time much more when it's from a physical book than when I'm using an ebook- although the older ereaders that are purely black and white aren't too distracting from enjoying the book

Another advantage of using a dedicated ebook reader is that it isn’t full of other apps that might distract you from your book.

"The predictability would take out the addictiveness" - How about drugs, alcohol and sex? It is the predictabililty of sensation, the assurance of good feeling that makes addicts seeks more.
Jomarie Cabuello actually all 3 of those can take the predictability out of an average day, which makes the good feeling better
Your brain gives you a stumulation when you think about the things, so it feels good when you think about them. Usually the stimulation wears off after the addictive activity is done.

Aww man that's awesome. I rarely take phone out with me; and if I do it's just so I can play sudoku or learn languages while waiting for apointment. I never use it for social media. For me it's very limited use. First thing I did when I got my first ever smartphone was to set rule for myself to never use it for social media. I don't regret it one bit. I can focus on life way more that way; I'm not creative like you are though; making fun games; that sounds amazing. Would love to be your friend ^^ . But what I appreciate is having so much peace and relaxation and just inner peace means a lot to me. I see ppl being on phones feeling a bit stressed if they have to be without phone for little longer than expected; it's really sad to see. It's still weird for me to see how much phone matters to others. Phones are like... new version of cigarettes for some.

Subham Bhattacharjee OOF.
Same 😂
Subham Bhattacharjee I just leave the notifications alone (social media ones). Why, I can't ask the question besides being my habit.
"Addicting" IS actually a word, but since it is not an adjective, it is often used incorrectly. As used correctly, it is a verb, meaning "tending to or causing to become addicted." For example, "By drinking too much coffee, I run the risk of addicting myself to caffeine."
I'm addicted to my phone because there isn't something better to do
Mmm Mmm As someone other said here in the comments, reading a book should do.
Find something better to do. Play a sport or instrument, learn something new, study. Start a new project, there a lot of things to do.
That feeling in itself is a sign of addiction. When we addict to something, that thing becomes more stimulating while all others become less stimulating. The same mechanism applies to drug and alcohol addicts. For Your consideration.
Go check out the channel 'yes theory' i think you need it

1- Turn off your notifications (Restrict them to only when someone is trying to reach you)
2- Use a grayscale filter
3- Restrict your home screen to everyday tools (Like maps, calendar and calculator)
Extra: Be careful with apps with infinite scroll and ask yourself what is actually worth your attention.
Victor Rocha
Another extra tip: uninstall any apps (especially games) that make you more stressed instead of less.
It’s not you. Vox is posting more “it’s not you” videos than ever before.
I never turned on notifications so I never got addicted. People spend way to much time on social media, one of the most tragic things I see almost every day is when two friends greet each other then spend the next 20m on their phones not talking to each other. It literally infuriates me.
It's the worst! You meet up with a bunch of folks for coffee, and instead of talking, there they are, staring at their phones or taking pictures of the coffee instead of talking. :(
Some notifications are set to 'on' by default in a lot of apps, just word to the wise.
VSpoodle Yes, and for that, some phones have a do not disturb feature where all notifications can be kept silent except if someone calls. That's very useful as well. 😊
oh

A book is one those things that only exists to grab your attention.

Tobs Meks do those still exist?
What are Snapchat streaks? I've never had Snapchat (I personally think Snapchat is stupid and pointless) but kids at my school talk about it all the time. I feel like an absolute idiot when they talk about it, lol.
Diamond Dog If you send a snap (picture) and they send one back that activates the streak, and every day you two send at least _one_ snap you get a day added on to your streak. however it's a streak so it can break, and start over.
Diamond Dog And I forgot to mention that a lot of times people just take one picture and send it to all of their friends.

Two things: (1) Putting Android in grayscale just looks so damn classy. I like it and thanks for the tip! Kinda wish there's an easy way to toggle it tho for when I'm using the camera and I actually care about the colors. (2) I need that self-refilling bowl.
chadestioco me too, I need times where I can easily switch it off if I need to focus on colors
Greyscale is elegant as heck!
This site includes the trick for switching back & forth between grayscale and color.
lifehacker.com/change-your-screen-to-grayscale-to-combat-phone-addicti-1795821843
Putting the phone in greyscale makes the background when I'm reading a harsh blueish grey instead of the warm beige I prefer because it's gentler on my eyes and disrupts melatonin production less. If it didn't make reading less comfortable (and I rather want to encourage myself to spend more time reading instead of playing relatively mindless games), I would _so_ use it.
I deleted all of the social media apps excluding RUclips, telegram and WhatsApp a year ago and now I literally don't waste time as much as I used to :)
I only use my phone for Instagram, RUclips & Spotify (of course text msgs and calls as well) and that's enough for me to spend 1/3 of the day stuck on it
Relatable and I really need to change that!
I’ve been using my phone on greyscale for a couple days now and I love it. I’ve noticed that being on my phone is less satisfying and I don’t get comfort from just looking at it anymore

I commented this too!! I'm so glad I'm not the only one... Now I hate myself less haha!
Also yes Addictive is the (more) correct case here as it is an adjective Vs "addicting" which is a verb. Though in informal speech both can be interchangeable, considering that Vox takes on a more professional stance, I'd expect them to use "addictive" as it's an adjective describing how phones are designed, not a verb. It would make more sense in "Phones are addicting users to their content."

Just changed the color filter on my phone to greyscale and I’m already noticing a difference. Just moved all my unnecessary apps to a second screen and it was relieving. I gotta share this with a lot of my friends.
Exactly it looks boring, I did the same.
Just today I opened my phone 131 times and I spent in RUclips 3 hours
Having a separate account for RUclips to watch all the trash has helped me reduce my RUclips addiction. Like on here, I usually only get recommendations on lectures and informative videos but I have an alternative account that's just filled with cat videos and BuzzFeed. It helps as long as I don't log in to the other account.
