I hired Carl to come to my company and coach my 24 year old Digital Marketing Strategies how to use Photo Mechanic to help organize our graphic data for our website. It was incredibly productive. Truly useful - he was able to share short cuts and knowledge that would take years to figure out by trail and error. Than you, Carl.

Thanks I am continuing to learn. Is it possibly to add preexisting metadata to other fields via the use of a variable for the field. Why? I want to add preexisting information for the image to an enhanced keyword list. Initially I omitted location and year and month shot from keywords, now I realise that they would be useful. Hence question.

Carl, your videos are really excellent...but this 2018 tutorial doesn't seem to quite mesh with v6 that I am using. That results in some confusion and I'd like to suggest an update based on the most recent version. Even so, yours are the best on RUclips.

Thanks. Is it possible to sort on the original file name in the Trans ref field. I have a mess of duplicate unthought through backups to sort out from my beginnings in digital photography. so sort and compare Trans ref field against the original filename on the backup and compare capture times as well.

That's a tricky one. But yes, you can make a sort for any two fields, first one then the other. So you could do filename, then transref. You can only do two at a time, though. To see more fields, you could set up an Info Text appropriately and turn it on as a tooltip and then mouse over candidates to see if the capture times and file sizes matched. (Say, set just the three or four fields you're interested in, so the tooltip is easy to read quickly.)
Custom sorts are under the sort pulldown in the Contact sheet view. You can make an Info Text setting from Edit>Settings>Set Info Text. Be sure to use the Snapshot function to save your normal Info Text. Tooltips can be turned on or off with CMD-Shift-T. (On Mac. Should be Cntrl-Shift-T on Windows but I'm too lazy to walk across the room to check:-)
You should be commended for setting off on this journey. It's a long one. I purged about a zillion dupes last year, but there are many, many more still lurking out there.

Thanks for your effort in explaining all the great features of PM. As many others I have thousands of photos organized in some way or another. Lately I have been thinking of another naming system as the current one has some short comings. One question about renaming in PM: I have metadata in a sidecar file as my workflow is from PM to CaptureOne. Will renaming the photo files in PM also update/rename the sidecar file? Thanks again.

I figured it out experimenting with PM my self.
