The first machine you called a washing machine, was in fact, a spin dryer, to get excess water out of clothes before hanging them to dry. The second machine was the washing machine, and not the dryer, you hooked the rubber hoses up to the taps to fill it. The centre paddle was called an agitator, and would rotate back and forth to move the clothes around.

This house is similar to the oldest houses here in Brazil. Also we are used to use this pineapple's bottle, I had laughed when I saw it kk. Those huge mud jars, they are clay filters and people say those filters turn water more nutritional, because of the mud properties or something like that.

This is my favorite type of exploration. Everything is left exactly as she left it. Things are not thrown around and/or broken. You are walking directly on the floor and not clothes and broken dishes.. There is no writings on the walls. A lovely exploration.

  • @marlenevieira7621
    @marlenevieira7621 2 года назад +3

FYI: that thing hanging on the wall you thought it might be some kind of oil dispenser is actually a device to administer an enema, also known as clyster, which was used to stimulate stool evacuation. You would fill it with a liquid and then inject the liquid into the rectum in order to relieve severe constipation. The big clay container in the kitchen was not for wine, it was used to keep the water fresh and pure. I don't think this family was poor, they had pretty expensive stuff for their time. By the way, I love your videos. Keep up the good work.

Actually, 99% of what he says is made up shit. I wish they would include facts and not the nonsensical fairy telling. Bypassing beautiful architecture and artwork (not just oil paintings) but also carvings, statues, hand-made tiles, etc. to show us close ups of some awful ashtrays is beyond sad and such a waste because you know some knuckle-heads are going to go in and destroy what they can and spray paint everywhere else and it will all be lost. I think I will look into them again in a year and see if they have matured.

Another wonderful video of a typical Portuguese family! Interesting to see that their culture is sooo very different than ours! They may have been poor, but they had gorgeous wooden furniture, that was sooo very unique & beautiful! Amazing how she was illiterate until age 63… wow… what incentive to go back to school after all of that time, to learn to read & write! Good for her! That took fortitude! I’m sooo very glad that you have Danny there with you to translate their customs & give interpretations of the lifestyle! He is sooo very valuable to have around! Thank you once more Lesley and Danny, for taking us into the life of someone that time seems to have forgotten! The machine that you thought was a dryer "the square one" is a washing machine and the round one was a spin dryer " this just spun out the water" then the clothes ready to hang up to dry! I used one in the early years of our marriage, in the early 70s! Then in 1974, out came the first Phillips automatic washing machine, that washed and spun off, just like todays do! I loved that machine & it lasted 13 years!

Hi Lesley & Danny, love the wooden carved cabinets & chairs! Wow, never knew wood silverware before stainless steel ones!! I never seen a shower thing in bathroom before! I never seen a oil light above the bed & you explaining it what ball holds, most interesting!! Yes those cloth tissues you said are called Handkerchief`s. They had these in USA, up to the 1950`s. I have a few from my Mother. The cloth you picked up that was round & detailed to put under things is called Doily`s ! As for the carved chairs that are beautiful, if it has dust on them better to blow dirt off instead of wipe it. Love the chest or ( trunk as we call it here. ) Now for the new part of house...never saw that kind of washing machine or dryer. You should of shut kitchen window to preserve what is left in the kitchen. Wow, love the paper list to go to grocery store, but here we still write a grocery list on paper...no one uses their smartphones-2022. Ok, drawings that a child made was 1995 so longer staying than calendar 1992. The green glasses are worth money! Kids play cars are very expensive in USA. Ok the pencil pen you called it is actually was called Reed Pens, Quill Pens, Dip Pens, before ballpoint pens. Great Video!

Hey Danny and Lesley, this house was so cool. I loved to see the shower and the cigarette dispenser, I have never something like that before. The Portuguese curtains are so cool! The old picture should be saved for history. Love your videos, stay safe and have fun exploring! xxoo

The square thing you called a dryer would be the washing machine and the thing you called a washer would have been a spin rince and dryer .

The Kitchen brush looked like a "baking broom". Cooks would pull off a strand of straw off of the broom, in order to check to see if cakes and breads were done. They still make them in the states.

The square machine is for the washing ... the smaller round Thomas machine is called an extractor ... it spins the water from the clothes before you hang them on the line

After long time I watched your video again.. And it felt great as always.. At the age of 63 she went to learn how to read and write, really that's incredible, she must have been strong minded woman with never give up attitude.. That's why I say these videos are somewhere life changing.. And it's always wise decision to watch your videos whenever I feel down and skeptical(of course about my abilities)..
Those tunes throughout the video and especially your special narrations with such incredible tune, I feel these are music of my soul.. Makes me feel absolutely nostalgic.. Thanks a lot for another such mesmerising video.. Stay blessed, happy and healthy.. 🙏🙏👍👍😇😇

At 32:00 this is a spin dryer. The clothes are dried by spinning at high speed and the water is expelled from the spout at the side.At 35:54 is the washing machine known as a "top loader". Great Videos! Keep them coming very interesting and yet sad as you often point out.

Liebe Grüße aus Deutschland, schönen Sonntag Abend ✌️🤩… die runde Maschine ist eine Schleuder, damit man die Wäsche nicht mit der Hand auswringen musste, die zweite ist eine Waschmaschine, sog. Toplader 😉😊
