Theres many times in this novel where I roared with laughter. It's outrageous-it's violent - unhinged with tons of mischief. King poured a vat of spunk and youth from his imagination for this one. Its a blast!
It's my favorite along with Insomnia, another underrated book of his. This one is really good with all the social undertones of small town secrets coming back to haunt everyone, think Twin Peaks. Same idea. And Insomnia is just creepy as fuck. Love them both.
I loved this book actually, I think it’s one of his better books also. I wouldn’t say it’s a top 5 but it’s definitely a great book. The ending is a little crazy but I still liked how something was constantly going on in the story
Well, I can't say what purchase I'd make at needful things because I haven't read it yet but this sounds like it's really good and so much fun to read. My aunt asked if I've read this and recommended it and and I trust her so I might just give this a read! Love your review and I'll catch you in the next one!
Don't read this one if you haven't read the other Castle Rock stories; there's a lot of tie-in/callback. If you have read them, this is a really good book
Good movie too. Growing up in Corinth, Maine I lived next to Chris Lavin, who this book is dedicated too. He was Kings drug and alcohol counselor and good friend. Cheers 🍻
I really agree with your assessment of this book. I just finished a second read of it and found that I still really enjoy it, and would also put it in the top half of his novels. I have to watch the movie again now as I don't remember any of it at this point
I really liked it! As a life long collector of many things, I could relate to that desire for a certain elusive or rare item. It's the treasure hunt that's exciting, digging at flea markets, etc. Btw, it's not just this one, the Stranger Things title is in Stephen King's signature vintage book font... plus! Stranger Things, Stephen King... that's no accident lol!
Just finished the book tonight. Very good in most parts. I listened to the audio book so the most difficult part was keeping track of the character names and stories. I was trying to find a prank map in the vein of a train map to no avail haha that aside I like the character development and back stories. I think this is my 5th or 6th King and what I enjoy is the way he's able to draw you in a rip you for chapters at a time. I didn't mind the ending. It is what it is. Looking forward to my next King which should be 11/12/63. I knew of needful things in high school and the premise even back then drew me in - buyer beware. Haha.
Hair is on point in this vid Dave, reminds me of Martin Gore from Depeche Mode! I rate this book highly myself and would pretty much do anything I was asked if I went into Needful Things and found a lightsaber or hoverboard from Back to the Future.
Just finished the book…my word, that was deliciously dark and twisted. The last quarter of it is so frenetically paced, I could hardly take in one batshit crazy scene before I was engulfed by the next. “That suicide” though…haunting is the right word. Out of the 13 King books I’ve read so far, this is in my top 3 for sure (just nudged Cujo out the way), after The Stand and The Shining respectively. Top drawer stuff 👌🏽
This one had a really cool premise, but it just hits a wall. Like a lot of his stories, the ending just fell flat as well. Sorry in advance for blowing up your notifications, but I need to play catchup after recently discovering your channel. 3.5/5
I started reading the book in 2017. But then had a health scare (stroke). And during my rehab lost track of reading for obvious reasons. Guess its finally time to start it again. I've read plenty of other King since that time period. Just for some reason never went back. No clue why.
This is a fun book, even if the ending is a bit daft. I also enjoyed the movie for what it was, especially Max Von Sydow as Gaunt and J.T. Walsh as Buster. As for what my needful thing would be? I'm sure that John Bonham's acrylic drum set from the 70s would be my undoing.
Finally finished this book, one of the longest books I’ve ever read… It was a bit repetitive but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Think I will start reading It now… (First real horror book from king that I read…)
If there was an item which could make any woman you chose to fall in love with you! I might consider it lol Great review actually starting this one next :)
I did enjoy the movie adaptation especially max von snyder as Leland gaunt he's fantastic in the role ed Harris is good as allen but this movie is a little bit out dated definitely needs a remake
This book dragged on for a few chapters too long. Never finished it. While “It”, despite its length, sucked you in, Needful Things just run out of gas and sputtered away in the last fifth of the book.‘I just skipped to the end. The whole town blew up? Good riddance.

Totally agree! It was written as a satire and is absolutely best read in that way!

Agree completely on both books!
I've had Insomnia on my kindle for awhile. Will finally get to it. After I finally finish Needful Things.

That's definitely true - it's one busy book!

Oh nice!
Just finished this book. And I thought it’s started a little slow, but after reading, so good. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for commenting!

Thank you! I also think it holds up very well and rank it pretty highly overall. The movie is decent too - a bit dated, but fun!
Reading this now and loving Stephen king narrating it. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I love it!
Nice!
Good content Dave! 9:42 - it's originally a Ray Bradbury novel, replacing Wicked for Ricked
Just realised I defaulted to saying Wicked and not Ricked - autopilot from having read the Bradbury book so many times!
I can't wait to read this book I will be requesting it at the library next week 🤗📚
Nice! Hope you have some fun with it!
@@DaveReadsKing I finished the book a few days ago it's one of my favorite books from king I'm planning on watching the movie adaptation
@@angelaholmes8888 nice! The movie is a bit dated but I enjoyed it a lot
I really loved Needful Things. And I have the biggest crush on Alan Pangborn....
I don't blame you, he's a stud...and that's without mentioning his magic hands ;-)
I really liked it! As a life long collector of many things, I could relate to that desire for a certain elusive or rare item. It's the treasure hunt that's exciting, digging at flea markets, etc.

Heck yes to everything!

Nice! And 11/22 up next? You’re in for a treat - that book is *chef’s kiss*
This is one of your best reviews. Thanks 👍🏾
You’re welcome!
Absolute gem of a book. Love your videos dude. One I'll be coming back to. Still deciding which will be my next book.
Thank you very much!
Reading Needful things now dude 😁@@DaveReadsKing
Really enjoyed Insomnia@@DaveReadsKing insomnia had a few easter eggs i wasn't expecting too
@paulflint6254 awesome!

Thank you! And heck yes, a Marty McFly hover board would be immense!
i kinda wanna copy your premise for my book club but dont wanna be a copycat
love this series
Feel free to copy my premise - doesn't bother me at all! Glad you like it!
Nice format. I’ll go ahead and subscribe.
Have you considered more in depth discussions about the books? 👍
Thanks. I have considered it but, you know, never enough time!
Just finished the book…my word, that was deliciously dark and twisted. The last quarter of it is so frenetically paced, I could hardly take in one batshit crazy scene before I was engulfed by the next. “That suicide” though…haunting is the right word.

Yes! Needful Things is a banger!

Nice, thanks!
Love the shirt and love that edition of the book. After the excellent Needful Things, King became hit-and-miss for me.
Thank you. I actually think the 90s is my favourite decade of King, but appreciate I'm in a minority there!

I’m so sorry that happened to you and hope you’re recovered now? And happy reading 😊
@@DaveReadsKing oh fully recovered rather quickly.
@brucegrossman3531 very glad to hear that!
"Chuckle!" I bought my copy at a little knicknack/junk shop. (Didn't have to do any favors!)
Ha! That’s great😂

I agree with you - love the book and had a lot of fun with the movie too! And that’s a great choice for your Needful Thing 🤘
Finally finished this book, one of the longest books I’ve ever read… It was a bit repetitive but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Think I will start reading It now… (First real horror book from king that I read…)
I quite liked Alan Pangborn too, would like to see King bring him back in a future book :P Maybe I should read the other book he appeared in.
Nice! Enjoy!
I’d love a Pangborn return - definitely give The Dark Half a try, he’s ace in that too!
My item would be a rare book worth thousands but I'd read it anyway
👍👍👍
My favorite 💙💙💙💙 Leland is the best!
He is terrific!
love this book so much!
Same! I love the build up before it just GOES OFF!
Just got this in the mail.
Nice! Hope you only paid cash for it and didn’t have to do any extra favours or little pranks for the person who sold it to you 😂
@@DaveReadsKing nah bought it in a lot with The Stand and first three Dark Tower books.
Why did they change it to Mickey Mantle for the movie !?
Who knows? Movie makers often like to change things just because they can
If there was an item which could make any woman you chose to fall in love with you! I might consider it lol Great review actually starting this one next :)
I imagine Gaunt would have you do something particularly nasty in return for that!
@@DaveReadsKing yeah knowing him I agree there
I did enjoy the movie adaptation especially max von snyder as Leland gaunt he's fantastic in the role ed Harris is good as allen but this movie is a little bit out dated definitely needs a remake
Yes, it's great but very 90s...a modern reworking could be really interesting!
NO REMAKE REQUIRED WE NEED NEW FILMS SOMETHING NEW NOT SAME OLD THINGS OVER AND OVER

Interesting…I was hooked throughout in this book, both times I read it - I just loved being in Castle Rock and seeing it all go wrong!
