This is not the only existing rail ferry system in Europe, but it is currently the only one that also has passenger service.
For your information, until 2009 railways in Italy also ferried trains (but only for freight service) between Civitavecchia and Golfo Aranci in Sardinia. Now the service has been closed (not without controversy), and if any movement of rolling stock to and from Sardinia is required for service reasons then the Villa San Giovanni rail docking is used on the mainland Italy side. In Sardinia, the Golfo Aranci rail docking has been kept partially active just for these services, which as far as I know are quite rare, while the Civitavecchia docking has been completely dismantled.

@marcopascucci7580 Thank you for your information. I had the info that until 2020 there was another service from Germany to Sweden, it looks that only fright, but from 2020 the only active is this one. I did not know that there are still connections to Sardinia. It is nice that there are more active connections like this.

There was a rail ferry between Rødby DK and Puttgarden DE on the line between Copenhagen and Hamburg. I traveled it on a DB ICE train back in 2014 and it was really fun. The ferry took 45 minutes to cross. Unfortunately because the water was choppy that day, passengers had to disembark the train before it loaded onto the ferry. I believe train service ended 2019 and now takes a longer route. The whole thing is being replaced by the massive Fehmarn Belt Tunnel project led by Denmark set to complete 2029. The B1M has a terrific video on the project. Thanks for your video; gave me similar vibes to that day crossing from Germany to Denmark.

@glensandberg4863 It seems as a great experience. This ferry ride is shorter, all together with loading and unloading the train takes about an hour, just the ride is about 20 minutes, I guess.

Yes, I know. I traveled by train between Copenhagen and Hamburg during 1980s when I was a student and I had my "compulsory" experience with InterRail. I also travelled with the Oslo - Hamburg train that was ferried twice at the time. The first between Sweden and Denmark between Helsingborg and Helsingor (the bridge was not there at the time), and the second between Denmark and Germany between Rodby and Puttgarden. That was a record, because I don't think there were any other train that were ferried twice on their route.

If i'm not wrong, existed another night train plus car following. the "Freccia della Laguna" express From Venezia S. Lucia, numbered 1931/1933 (because arrived at Messina was separated in two sections: 1931 towards Palermo, the 1933 towards Catania and Siracusa). But the characteristic was that the car wagons were added at Bologna and like the Treno del Sole you had to load the car at least 1 hour and half before departure at Piazzale Est. The car following in this case ended at Villa San Giovanni.
I made fantastic voyages because i reserved two beds in the sleeping carand the service for the early nineties was very good and confortable.
and the marvel of passing Messina strait with the ferry renewed every year.
Unfortunately all that come to an end abruptly and without a serious explanation by Trenitalia. Now you have a night train from Roma termini, but no longer following car. So you have to drive 1000 km at least or take a plane with Ryan air with proihibitive costs.

Was. Line between Hamburg and Copenhagen (which used ferry between Puttgarden and Rodby) isn't running any more as the line is being upgraded on both sides to prepare for the completion of the Fehmarn Belt undersea tunnel. It was operated by Danish (DSB) IC3 trains and later by (those unlucky) DB ICE-TD tilt-diesel trains. When the tunnel is built and lines upgraded, there will be a high(er)-speed (200-250km/h) electrified fixed link between Hamburg and Copenhagen.

@@pavlik02 As far as I know (informal sources), Trenitalia's intention for several years was to close the service to passengers and have them walk onto the ship, without ferrying the train, at least during the day. But it seems that despite the long time required for the ferry, travellers prefer to stay on the train therefore they mantained the service. Now the Rome-Sicily daytime Intercity runs with two separate sections of four carriages each, with two control cars in the middle, one locomotive at the head and the other at the tail. On arrival at Villa San Giovanni, the two sections enter the ferry separately. The idea (I do not know if they have already done this) is to equip the two locomotives with batteries to allow the two sections to enter the ferry independently even in the absence of a catenary and gain as much time as possible.
On departure from Messina, the two sections split up, one continues on to Palermo, the other to Catania and Syracuse. One section continues with the locomotive in pull mode, the other with the locomotive on push mode (the semi-pilot cars are used for this). On the return journey, exactly the opposite occurs.

Fuori dall'Europa, mi pare ci sia ancora la Nuova Zelanda a mantenere un servizio simile, tra le due isole che costituiscono quel paese; senza che ancora vi sia un collegamento stabile con ponte o tunnel.

@nicolasmoreau3084 I have read about the plans that have been approved and cancelled a few times already. I don't think this will happen any time soon. Although I think this ferry is one of the unique places where we can see the train entering the ferry.

The plans have been around since the 19th century. I hope it never happens. Sicily is too beautiful to be connected to the mainland. Moreover it would be extremely difficult and costly, Messina is in a very earthquake prone zone. Remember the 1908?

Suspension bridges are not ideal for the railway (though there are long suspension bridges that carry railway - April 25th bridge in Lisabon with a main span of about a kilometre) and most long railway (or combined road/rail) bridges are cable-stayed. Due to the width and depth of the Messina strait, bridge would probably need to be a single-span of over 3km (which is cca 50% longer than longest suspension bridge span today - 1915 Çanakkale Bridge in Turkey and about 3 times longer than longest cable-stayed bridge span which is Russky Bridge in Vladivostok). To get railway on that bridge would be rather difficult. Another option I have seen is railway tunnel, but it would need to be south where the sea is shallower but the tunnel would be longer (mere fact that You need to go deep under the sea means tunnel must be long due to grade limitation). Of course, tectonics is a huge issue for either tunnel or bridge, also very long span might mean it could end up being only a road bridge.

    • @RailRelaxation
      @RailRelaxation  Год назад +1

@maxart3392 yes, that is true. It is much more convenient for the night trains. Not to mention the cargo trains....
