I feel like this video just proves that you don't need brand name things. If you have style and can make yourself look good then that's all that matters
I completely agree, but most cheap clothes are made by underpaid people in horrible conditions so maybe the best is to investigate where our clothes come from, still, paying hundreds just for a shirt is incoherent
Yo that line "at the end of the day nobody can really get mad at the fakes and knockoffs cause thats what happens when you build your business around hype"
because of the pollution that comes over form china. They wear it to prevent breathing in the microdust. It effects your health horribly as you can probably imagine.
Jay only 30% comes from China. I lived in Korea and studied at uni there. Koreans tend to blame only China but forget about the nasty coal factories that rid the country. Also, the yellow dust is unavoidable as it's mainly Mongolian (the desert) and is both a natural occurrence and pollution issue.
@Sara Chang they didnt exactly mimick the west dou fashion is not about originality either Look at their oversized stacks and such they dont really resemble anything from the west
@Sara.C why are you so pressed over their style? there are many styles from korea you see in the west today. people get inspiration everywhere so calm down, you act like westerners themselves are original as well.
I got some Chinese knockoff converse as a present from my dad last Christmas and was too embarrassed to wear them for a whole year. About two weeks ago, my other pair of actual converse (my only other pair of shoes) broke, so I was forced to wear them. Looking at it now, I don’t know what I was so ashamed of. They’re nice looking shoes. That’s it. I don’t really care if they’re authentic or not, because they serve the purpose I need them to.
Shadow_Owl242 congratulations you are no longer a child. Your ignorant brain have fully matured now. Go apologise to your dad child, the old man worked hard to give you food, clothes and a shelter. You being embarrassed must have disappoint him tsk tsk tsk.
I think because of the main topic here is about the explosion of fashion and entertainment industry in S.Korea. The world now is fascinate with K-pop, K-Drama, K-beauty & K-Fashion stuff. Its a trend now. So these people just want to dig in some exact details from S.Korea itself, interviewing the youngsters who followed the trend, then bring the insight to the culture experts and discuss. And yes, I agree, counterfeiting is everywhere. Not only in Korea.
The fact that you are a fashion editor with pretty bad style (sorry) doesn't give you a right to look down on other people's choices or even fake brands. You earn probably more than all of us here and you probably get gifts from those luxury brand that's been mentioned but we don't have that opportunity. But to be honest buying a Supreme sweat for 20$ rather than 600$ makes me feel way better. Also you look very surprised and disgusted with all these fakes in Korea yet you can find them in every single country. Yes also in England and USA. In fact there are those fast fashion brands like H&M and Zara which were built to COPY those luxury brands so what is the issue here? The photographer already told that big brands do not enter the South Korean market so they used their brains and created their own brands which are obviously way better than those in Western countries. Seoul Fashion Week and South Korean street style is shaping the fashion nowadays but us Westernes are so arrogant that we always think we are better. Yes, the idea and first steps of street style were shaped in the West but Korea took it to another level now. In order to realize that i think you should go out and visit malls, streets more often. i'd suggest you to visit inditex group brands :)
Tilbe Türkmen first of all i wanna say that im asian so pls dont think i said this bcs i feel superior as an american or whatsover. And tbh i cant afford luxury stuffs like gucci etc and i prefer not to,i am against it and despite not having a single piece of clothes from luxury brand,i still look good cause i know theres a lot of cheaper, but still cute stuff and its an original design. You can go to your local brand and find many cute things there without disrespecting and supporting the " stealing culture"
Tilbe Türkmen it’s probably because they’re Korean and not American. Americans can do whatever they want but soon as Korea does it it’s “disgusting” 🙄 this dude needs to learn that Asian people didn’t start counterfeiting and that’s been happening since the dawn of time. Korean/Asian people get such a hard time over this and it pisses me off. Those big cooperations are not victims. who charges 5000 for a purse? a desperate victim, right?
Tilbe Türkmen supreme isn’t any better but whatever I can find supremes for 1 at yard sale and still won’t buy them cause it is just a red box that say supreme I rather buy the nice Vera bradly purses for 50c but you do you boo
They don't enter the market because of the counterfeits. Why would you try to compete with such a pervasive culture? Sure you can get fakes and knockoffs in the west, but the whole of our fashion doesn't depend on that shit, because the only ones really buying that stuff are the few wannabes that want to feel like they're rich but can't afford the life. Most people wear less expensive and still fashionable things, because our culture allows for it. Korean fashion, apparently, is so set on following trends set by cultural icons who can afford the brands, that they manufacture a demand for them. What's wrong with wanting Korea to develop their own looks and trends without having to rely on counterfeiting high end brands?
There's a big difference between copying a style and copying a brand. It's just shameless to buy direct knock offs, it's basically stealing. "Us westerners" oh come on, please stop, I don't want to be lumped in together with you.
Who cares? And what's the purpose of this video? Koreans got their fashion sense from Japan and the Chinese now are getting it from Korea and Japan in terms of make up, plastic surgery and fashion. There is nothing striking about the fashion in Korea. Harujaku though in Tokyo is where you see unusual or unique style. Besides people sell buy and wear fakes in almost every ccountry from Korea, Dubai to London.
Oka Mohammad you know I always thought most fake brands were made in Asian countries...I mean no offense intended, but thats how I figured these kids could afford these clothes....
You buy Box logo tees on ebay for $600 and then get upset when people in the other part of the world buy replicas for $5, because you realise the stuff youve purchased is from the same factory and youve been ripped off, thus the dislikes on the video. buying "originals" in the store doesnt make you hot shIt or doesnt let u "flex" on people, it usually means you're broke and will do anything to try and look expensive in front of people who dont even like you in the first place.
preach brother. "We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em Things we buy to cover up what's inside Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth" kanye the bitch even said that
The guy hosting this is salty af, pretty understandable cause he looks like an old prune wearing 'branded' clothes while everyone else around him look dope af in counterfeit clothes. LOL
Tbh as long as it looks convincing how the material feels isn't really high priority, if a broke ass person like me that can only afford cheap clothes can still feel confident and trendy I ain't complaining.
I've been living in Korea for a while and cheap korean clothes look better than American department store clothes. I think it's because koreans understand aesthetics better and fitting. Americans still wear clothes unnecessarily loose. If you wore fitting clothes you would not only look better but save on textile. Cut out the unnecessary parts. However, the downside of Korea's obsession with current trends and also fashion conformity, people here ALL wear the same clothes, the same style. There's no creativity, it's boring if you ask me. It looks good and safe, but it's not unique or independent. But, the fashion here is a representation of Korea's conformist culture. People here are taught to conform and follow the group. Don't stand out of speak out. Just, follow.the.current.trend.
The way they are dressing, including the fitting is the similar in many parts of the world, including America. You have been living in Korea for a while, right? When's the last time you've seen an abundant of fashion forward Americans in person? If you go to some high schools, teens are more fashion forward but also freestyle every now and then. How can Koreans understand "aesthetics" better if there is no creativity and everything looks the same?
Well Jasmine, what I can tell you for sure, as per my observation is, that while in America you might not see like a crazy explosion of creativity or fashion-forward mentality, at least there's a kind of fashion dynamic-range if you know what I'm saying. For example, in NY you'll see all kinds of people wearing all kinds of clothes. Some dress hideously, some dress comfortably and some dress like they are Gaga's backup dancers. It is this dynamic range that I'm really talking about. In Korea, it's mostly very standardized and similar. Meaning, you won't really see someone dressed out of of the norm or standout a lot, be it in a good or bad way. You won't really see many people that dress hideously but you'll also not see many people that truly stand out fashion-wise, in a very unique way either. This to me, is safe but rather boring. In fact, even their buildings and infrastructures look all the same. this is not only my observation but of many people that I've talked to; including my own native Korean girlfriend. Thanks for your comment.
Daniel Lim I understand that part, I'm questioning the better understanding of aesthetic part. If there's a better dynamic range IN America, and people are able to judge their own qualities to determine what their style is, how can Koreans understand aesthetic more, if they just follow each other and end up looking the same?
Exactly, that was actually my original point. They are just a product of their society. I'm not challenging them to do anything different, just a personal opinion that I find that boring.
paws down little mongsters paws down little mongsters You could've looked that up, but instead you didn't. It's fashion forward, because they are wearing what's trending or what some may call fashionable. They are obviously into fashion, which you can tell by the way they dress. And it doesn't matter if it's decades old, because we have been repeating fashion trends even from the 1800s.
This dude walking around saying how the quality is terrible but I bought Yeezy's in China for 20 dollars and they're almost the same as the original, in looks and in quality. Also, he never mentioned the price - brands are usually extremely overpriced and hyped up. I honestly have nothing against fakes, I don't wear them too often but acting all high like an elitist cause you maybe have 3000 dollars for a mere pair of sneakers is obnoxious af.
@@Oyashio202 lol she is provably not lying i live in africa and we have lot's of those fake brands coming from china and korea and the quality is not bad
Maman Aissatou Diagne YEEZYs are made in China as is lol nothing can really stop the vast amount of Chinese factories from copying the blueprint of the shoe and making their own copy
As a Korean myself, a lot of Koreans are aware of the fake brand clothes and apparel that are sold along the streets, we call them 짝퉁 (jjahktoong; fake brand). But it's these fake brands that are somewhat affordable than the real ones that are very costly. Because of how fashion, trends and fitting in is quite a large influence on Korean street culture some people would buy these fake, more affordable products. The feeling of wearing a fake product isnt as great as wearing the real thing but as long as you can get the acceptance from others and be fashionable, people will buy. Going shopping for 짝퉁 (fake brands) has become another shopping culture in itself, where you go to Dongdaemun, Myeongdong to go shopping to save money.
honestly i think they dont care about the brands cz they generally just dont care about it. the difference between the west and in korea, i think is that in western countries, u wear a brand and thats all ur wearing. match it with jeans and thats it, you're apparently "dope". but in korea, style doesn't stop at the brand. they go beyond the brand and mix and match and create something more out of a piece of clothing instead of just matching it with plain bottoms which u see a lot in western countries. in fact, i didn't see anyone in that fashion week who wore only plain tops and bottoms. they accessorised to match their personality. on the other hand, the host looks 'basic' in terms of outfit. and this is also true when u go to western countries. they're very basic in their styles in that they stop at the brand. they dont go beyond to personalise it to their own styles. so the judgments that were made for this issue, can also be said about western style. koreans may not care about the brands as much as the west, but the west also lack in creative style.
Koreans do it right. Go to Korea and see for yourself -- people are so well-dressed. Everything is fit, outfits on point. They don't obsess over brand names like we do elsewhere but rather just go for the aesthetic. That's what fashion should be about, not a pee pee measuring contest over who wears the most expensive brands.
Zadius895 I agree, some people don't understand because of the difference between one's culture. In Korea, they just go whatever they want despite of the brands. In fact, it was just a piece of clothing that makes you comfortable, buying clothes just to show how much money you have is fucked up.
They definitely do care about brands there. you don't know what your talking about. just like some people here do or don't care about brands it's the same there. Theres still huge pressure to follow trends and look certain way.
Especially seeing as they go into how Korea is obsessed with fashion but some designers still aren't sold there, so of course they're making fakes! The designers would sell there if they cared.
Exactly!!! And the fact that these luxury brands are literally swindling people. Look at Dior’s net profit. It’s 70% meaning every $1,000 some shmuck spends Dior pockets $700. Luxe brands are literally bleeding the middle class which buy these to be aspirational rich~
Can you imagine being white and British, traveling halfway around the world to tell a whole country to "look inward and create their own trends" while wearing American brands that copy streetwear that urban black people were wearing already????? ESPECIALLY when the fashion in question isn't groundbreaking or intricate. Like, of course, someone is going to copy a supreme or champion hoody..... it's literally a just a hoody with a certain word printed on it...... these kids are just trying to ball on a budget when they literally do not have direct acess to the brands thyey want.
She's not necessarily doing that. She's highlighting an irony and the tinge of hypocripsy this video shows. This guy literally comes off as a condescending douchebag without considering what people need to do for a living. He's using a documentary style of filming as if to provide a shocking revelation but actually negatively pegs another country's people as lesser. He's like the not hipster hipster that some people hate
Lmao okay let me notify your stupid ass. Blacks are not separate from any other American cultures. They did not create the american culture entirely. And koreans ARE Americans, they are majority Christian populous and their whole society is inspired by american culture because America came and saved our skin when Japan got smoked by America and pulled out of all foreign national territories. It's pretty sad how a lot of Americans disown their stepsibling who loves them very dearly. Final note, its pessimist to say "copied." I'd say inspired.
Alex Choi american values make a person american and sp skoreans are american. We're the closest oriental brothers Americans have as allies. Ofc technically speaking obviously sk is sovereign individually and America it's own but America is like sk's biggest hero and daddy. And the people love white America for the sole event after the Pacific war and helping them neutralize the Korean conflict. You are either delusional or ignorant or not Korean?
Mmm idk I disagree?? it ruins the point of the exclusivity and i personally feel like its disrespectful to the designer and brand itself. And those who are actually into the streetwear culture purposely learn how to tell the differences bc fakes can be looked down upon
Imagine spending your whole life to build a brand blood sweat and tears and then some market goes and Takes all of your designs and makes them for cheaper essentially ruining your brand and making your looks mainstream
People bashing people for liking it are just as bad as they claim others to be. If people like it why does it matter to you? Everyone has things they spend money on
The only reason I have a little bit of a problem with it, is just because how non-biodegradable clothes are and how bad it is for the environment :( I love fashion, though. I so love their style haha
Thor Krogh- By buying replicas you support a poor family somewhere in China. By buying retail you overpay a company worth billions of dollars. An easy dilemma if you ask me.
Producing and selling replicas isn't an easy life, they don't make much at all. The point you're trying to make is shit since again, these companies are worth billions of dollar despite all these replicas out there. People who buy replicas are obviously people who don't want or aren't able to waste so much money on high end clothes, so they aren't stealing as it barely affects the sales. The replicas that get made of clothes are mostly from popular brands, or else they wouldn't sell. I can assure you that anyone can try to work hard to grow their own brand without anyone creating replicas of it. Now it does happen a lot that brands steal eachother's designs, but that's not what this video is about.
It's funny, if they sell fake brands clothes but they are pretty and people go in the street confident with their looks, let them freaking live! Confidence and loving yourself and what you wear is important, there are people who can't afford expensive and the real brand clothes but now they can and people will not see the difference. At the end, even if you buy something expensive and real brand you will wear it as the other person who will buy the fake one lmao
e l l e j o i thats not what the problem is,you need to understand the creativity and all the work that goes behind ONE design, imagine yourself as a designer and someone else copied it and defense theirself bcs the fake one are cheaper and the original brand are overpriced (which is true in case of brand like supreme, but that doesnt make it right to support a fake) blabla...its like stealing, its illegal, and if you think those brands are overpriced, you can go buy authentic secondhand or non brand/your local brand, with their own original design
e l l e j o i not really saying that people that sell fakes are bad since they do have lives and need to hav a living out of something but they are stealing. The fact that those designs we're stolen can strike the original designer as "oh... i worked hard on this design... i guess people can just make fakes now. " dont you think its kinda sad for the original brand. Yeah some fakes look spot one but maybe instead of getting another brands design that they should design the clothes they make themselves? And if not maybe they could just draw inspiration from it. Its genuinely unfair to the original artists. If your gonna invest time on copying something then your gonna have time to make your own ideas.
This is how whites go around Korea bashing it and refusing to leave Korea, some even cry when their teaching contracts are not renewed because the only other option is to go back to their father's basement in Iowa.
Oppas Without Jams I don't care people wearing or buying fakes but when they scam people by selling fake as real item and putting premium price on the fakes like real item that's when I have beff with fake products.
The people who are wearing the real stuff can spot the fake stuff. I don’t personally wear Supreme or street wear. I’m 30 and it’s not my personal taste but I can spot fake Louboutins, Saint Laurent and even LV. If you can’t afford it just be creative with no name brands it will look a lot better and you won’t look desperate.
boy its called fashion and paying for a name, when you buy Louis Vuitton or Balenciaga, you dont pay the clothe, you pay the brand, and Im ok with that Because its ok to buy knock-off when you have the money to buy the original, which I personally dont because I want the original, but some of my friends do buy the knock-off to feel like you have the OG one
well to be honest that just depends on what kinda stles you prefer right? i feel like a lot of western stuff is very "inside the box" (my opinion) although there are plenty of decent western brands.
maya he’s more like mid to late 30’s to me. he’s just dressed like a gen-xer. it’s the kids these days that are trying to dress like them because it’s “retro”
This vid is so misleading that it’s actually funny. Every country sells counterfeits unfortunately. This guy goes to parts of Seoul that sells cheap knockoffs that people are well aware of & make it seem like everyone is buying that stuff. It’s like going to Chinatown in NYC & seeing their knockoffs & saying NY’s fake fashion world, lol.
But I think the law in those countries can step in, where in SK it's the norm. I agree that Koreans will start doing their own thing and soon the world will be begging to import their brands in the west tbh
your attitude is wrong. its not the point whether ny is selling counterfeits. which it rarely is. the problem is that the video is talking about a booming korean fake market. this sort of counterfeit business is illegal and if the police saw this on the streets the person would face the consequences of the law. supporting fake brands is your personal choice.. but the police have a job and should arrest people exploiting illegal produce.
The amount of eye rolls I've done of him criticizing the quality is astounding. I'd rather save a buck than lose an arm and leg for a "quality" shirt that's gonna go out of style anyway and wind up being more than half price at a thrift shop
MJluvr87 and when its thrift store bought, you can ironically wear it indefinetly. so my advice is: popular fashion is fleeting, ironic fashion is forever
Exactly, considering how much waste there are from clothing, there's no point in shilling out for some dumb trends when you just want to style yourself on what's hot. Pretty similar to games where you design your character and choose their outfits, hair, looks.
I am from Bangladesh, and pretty much 50% of clothing in the world are manufactured here. As a result clothes are so cheap that you can see hobos wearing Adidas (and they aren't even fake ones). I laugh when people say expensive clothes are better quality. They are all made in the same factory as a GAP t-shirt with the same fabrics/stitching. The premium brands produce the same quality stuff as generic brands, but the extra price you pay is just to cover their marketing costs.
You're right, he could very well 'know' them in those capacities. It's expected that ANY fashion journalist covering shows at any fashion week around the globe would have at some point met/interviewed at least a few designers, as that's what their job entails, ... or, you now, just know how to fcking work Google to answer to your latter point, but does that mean they know them in a personal capacity? That's the point I was driving at - that he was assuming familiarity, where there very well might have been none.
@@milkandspice1074 Yeah. Gucci isn't going to go bankrupt when I buy a counterfeit product. And if you build your brand based off exclusivity, you should expect replicas
A fake and a copy are different. A fake is an “original” product created with the logo of the brand. For example you would see t shirts the brand never made, or other products that you know the brad would NEVER put out with its logo on it. I once saw Louis Vuitton car mats. Then you have copies that are copies of actual products the brand put out. In some way, a fake is more exclusive than a copy.
This video and the host is biased and ignorant. Obviously, not everyone can afford to buy the real items. So what?! They can buy whatever they want. These street vendors need to make a living too.
eanihs7 It’ Intellectual Property and all this at least in the US is theft. You think it’s harmless by people buying a knockoff of something they can’t afford and sticking it to big business who dare sell something you can’t afford. Also, some people can tell real or fake at just a glance and I think people look dumb as hell attempting to pull off a cheap polyester knockoff like it’s the real deal. Usually cheap brands come out with inspired by products that are similar.
You really should watch the whole video before accusing it of bias. The conclusion clearly states that it is the fault of the big labels for marketing with hype and exclusivity and that the buyers and the vendors aren't to blame. You people shit me. It's like you born with no fucking eyes or ears and one big fucking mouth just spewing out bullshit.
Sunghee Kim when I’m on Instagram, all I see are korean with Supreme sweater, vetements jeans, balenciaga triple s sneakers, off white logo cap and LV x Supreme bag. I wonder why everyone able to get the same stuff.
I live in Korea, too and know nothing about the trends. Not everyone cares so much about street style. This is my first time hearing about Supreme and thought the counterfeit ₩30,000 sweatshirt was too expensive. I hate big logos.
ik. It amazes me how asia deals with fashion and especially how masculinity isnt defined the same way. Like its ok to be a grown man holding a nonscreen accurate (not red) elmo that suggests childness yet he holds it like a boss. Even to the point where he is colour matching the elmo to his pink top; with a visor and causal sleepwear (the trousers). Major props!
Way to generalize a whole frikkin country! Counterfeits can be found in e.v.e.r.y. country. Why would anyone want to buy overpriced products when one can save money and buy the alternative? And fyi, they look gooooooooooddd! So it doesn't really matter if they're buying the real thing or something else. It's their choice which is not going to effect you in anyway possible so quit being so nasty about something you can't comprehend.
Joella S That is true. But I have problem when people generalize a specific country like this video and the comment I responded to. How can people surveying citizens come to this conclusion that NO ONE is buying the original craft? I study the survey techniques and I can see how they're utterly biased in their opinion and can get away by saying it's a survey so this hold true for every citizen.
Joella S also, everything originated from somewhere so does that mean I should burn a hole in my pocket in order to support the original artist every time?
It's amazing how such fashionable people are considered basic in Seoul. If maintaining a hypebeast pop star appearance was as much of an intense requisite for upward mobility in American culture, we'd all be purchasing and wearing knockoff hype gear and it wouldn't even be stigmatized. It's not like anyone could possibly expect the average 20-something to keep up with dropping $10K a week on authentic Vetements hoodies, rare Supreme hats and Gucci jackets. Imagine living in a society where sporting a simple flannel shirt and blue jeans in a Facebook pic would equal career suicide? Basically, South Koreans view hype fashion and getting straight-A's in EVERYTHING as a basic standard of life, where in America we just hope to expect our peers to brush their teeth and appear functional at work/school. I could never survive the insane levels of societal pressure in Korea.
BOOTLEG ASIAN I agree and it's easy to live that way in America because employers here don't really care as long as you look somewhat clean and they can still make money off you. Personally I just wear plain shirts, sweaters, and cheap pants. But in Korea, authority figures (elders, teachers, bosses) are far more judgemental of people don't appear to look high class and won't hesitate to berate you for "doing you" if it starts to resemble mediocrity. Koreans are expected to get with the program, which is to do everything perfectly and look like popstars and celebrities.
But you gotta admit that their cheap clothes look nice. Here the cheap clothes from Walmart look garbage Also now I finally realize how all those Asian kids in my school got branded clothes😂😂😂 Also 2:58 that guy is so attractive 👀
Kpopislife i mean a lotta asians are rich cod their parents have good jobs like doctors... so i mean they’re probably not fake since i wear authentic brands all the time
Can't blame them for not wanting to pay 1000 for ugly yeezys or 400 for a damn supreme logo on a plain shirt. If they get the same product that looks identical for 1/10 of the price, good for them!
So if you created a fashion brand, and someone stole it and claimed it's authentic. You're down with them stealing your profits on your creative ideas?
I was in Seoul last winter and I was shocked to see how a trend can influence that many people. At least 60% of people wore the same jacket, if I had to guess I saw the same jacket over thousand times when i was there. It was insane. The hair styles are also all very very similar and the hair color as well. Most Koreans really do look very stylish but most of them also look very similar to another, it was definitely a culture shock for me coming from Europe
Lmao the host is dressed like an absolute goober. It's like he gave his mum a 10 second run down of "street fashion" and she dressed him. I'm dying lol. His outfit at the end of the video is WAYYYY better. Lose the sunglasses mate. I don't care how trendy they are. They don't suit your face.
Poor quality? I own so many 'cheap' clothes from vendors on the street in Korea and man they're better quality than Walmart or Target. Worth the cheap price.
mina0n what do you mean? I've never received a poor quality knock off. Sucks for those who have, I use clothes for at least 5 years. Nice try though ;)
Breanna Swanson he basically meant that if something is cheap which most likely would be poor in quality which means it'll break or have to be replace very often and in the Long run, it creates a lot of waste and that itself is bad for the environment & so he's just trying to say buying a good quality that last forever is way better and double win for everyone. He's in no way trying to make it personal and you definitely took what he said wrongly.
lol didn't he mean cheap by cheaply made... not cheap as in price... so the cheaply made things wouldn't be better than walmart... why are the comments section so salty lmao
Mark S lmao I'm not Asian, I'm white and I live in Canada.... second of all there's no point in responding to what you said cause you are clearly uneducated and ignorant. I wonder why you guys from the states use Samsung, drive Toyota cars. I could name more but there's no point.
Korean designers do get inspiration from the west, but the clips added in the middle part weren't even "trends". Some were even seasons decades ago that made a mark in fashion history especially that iconic Balenciaga box-like coats. This is the case for ALL designers, almost all fashion houses get inspiration from past and other more known designers that's why we have that idea that fashion is just recycled. This documentary literally just cherry picked and made it look like Korean designers just copy and copy. Sure they're big in trends and Western "non-conformist" ideals will go against it, why should they be frowned upon when pretty much fashion is about trends? The literal copies are shady, but that's normal for items that people want to have and no one is enforcing the law against piracy, so it's only going to flourish.
FYI those Balenciaga vids shown were from some of the most recent seasons, Vetements was hype therefore Denma (chief designer of Vetements) who now heralds Balenciaga was hype or at least in South Korea (I don't remember seeing many NA hypebeasts wearing it but then again I don't pay attention), so these designers are entirely derivative and replicating the current zeitgeist, Koo also mentioned that Supreme derivative brand (which I assume is at a lower price point and, of course, available in SK), I'm not a fan of Denma either for what its worth
My mistake for Balenciaga. I thought it was spring 2016. Vetements is very hyped like Supreme. I don't care for that much either. It's just that I don't really see the point of highlighting korean brands that copy (with minimal change) fashion when the same goes for H&M and F21. The blatant counterfeits (especially using logos), though, is a different story and it is problematic.
Claudine Ng yup vetements is just rehashed less intellectual margiela meets hipster streetwear, I'm glad the hype has died down but it's not like it's been replaced by anything deserving
Claudine Ng ooh and also those were just included to support the video's argument that SK fashion is focused mainly on copying trends, I'm sure there are plenty of SK brands that produce original work that were obviously not covered, perhaps because they represent only a niche, the styles in the video are more mainstream there than in say the US given their populace's focus on brands fashion trends etc whereas in the US looking 'normal' means looking like you just stepped out of Walmart for most people
although this is a pretty bleak perspective of the state of things, it's undeniably true. and not to be ignored. people find comfort in hierarchies almost. what would it take though to find a solution? what would a world be like without trends? and how would you get there? that's whats really worth discussing.
this video emphasizes a lot on the counterfeit culture which does exist, but it doesn't mention that the market for that stuff diminished greatly over the past 5-10 years because koreans also do care about authentic products, too. pretty much anything you find in the US you can find locally in korea nowadays. some items are actually exclusive to japan and korea.
Yea I was thinking there had to be all kinds of US stuff sold in Korea. Money is money, and US companies are all about making it. If there really is a gap in the market like this video claims, then there is all the more money to be made off of genuine goods. Especially if the market is mostly fakes/imitation along with the fact that Koreans actually do care about authentic items like you are stating in your comment.
Yes Korean fashion is influenced by the Western style, but it's well improved. Tell me the last time you saw large metal hoops hanging off a black jacket at your local tshirt store.
It's a very informative and all but I don't like how they make it seem like koreans only copy trends when in reality they are the ones who started a lot of trends that western people wear nowadays. For example high wasted jeans, mismatched prints, fishnets, pajama dressing and the layering look.
Dunja Mahmoodi Actually, yes and no. Because most trends come directly from high fashion runway shows from other countries such as Paris, Milan, etc. It's just that Koreans have a way of incorporating it into their everyday lifestyle in a subtle way. Also, if you notice that most current trends are just recycled from previous 90's trends.
Dunja Mahmoodi adidas super star and bomber jacket i remember people wearing those in 2013 in cali here people started wearing like 2016 im like late af!!!
Korea did not start high waisted jeans... or any of the other styles you mentioned. Do you know anything of Japanese fashion it's been a lot bigger and more diverse than korean fashion for a long time but even then it did not invent certain styles just puts spins on them. If you really know anything about Korea you have to be honest and admit they always start out from copying other people and eventually take off with their own version of it thats different enough to not get ridiculed for being a complete rip off.
...none of those things were started by Koreans. They were brought back into fashion by Koreans. They already existed long before they were brought back by Korean only a few years ago. Know the difference.
Same yo, as long as you yourself are comfortable in the outfit. It's not like most people would actually look inside your shoes or the tags on the inside of clothes, it'd be crazy if someone did and was obsessive like that.
So selling fake clothes isn't allowed in korea?? Like dude almost everyone in the world wears fake branded clothes. Each country sure copies one luxury brand so that people who can't afford it's original can still wear it. Besides fashion is diverse so why do you keep on telling that koreans keep on copying western trends?like for sure it's their brand who is known but the design can be seen in other local brands in each country. I honestly would buy an 20 dollar hoodie or sweatshirt than to buy an original whose appearance is the same. Imaginge wearing the same clothes that is expensive then you see other people wearing it but is actually cheaper and rocks the outfit more than you do? You'll definitely feel cheated right? Fashion isn't about the price or brand of what you're wearing, it's about how passionate you are on how you dress or how you express yourself through your fashion sense.
Uhm, I'm pretty sure it's illegal in the US and so it is in Germany. There's no copying brands. There still is a difference between creating chucks that look LIKE Converse All Atars and creating chucks, writing "Converse All Stars" in the same font etc. on it.
It is easy to find fakes in asia most of these brands manufacture in asia. And yes they target korea because korea is outdoing them by affordable fashion.
First of all - if you're going to get someone talking about Korea and streetwear, make sure they actually KNOW what they are talking about. The thing about Seoul/Korea is you're not really going to get a grasp of it, unless you've spent at least a year there. Sending someone on a little trip - and having them talk about shit is just stupid. It's like you did a quick google search, put some facts together and then shot a couple random clips at fashion week (also you filmed all the wrong ppl btw) - and then made it seem like you guys are experts on the topics at hand. "everyone ive asked says they shop at dongdaemun" - rlly bro? nobody shops in dongdaemun except tourists who are lost. The wholesale markets (only open at night) are filled with amaaaazing quality (on par with designer labels) but thats for retail only - andddd might i add that a lot of the top western e-commerce use wholesale goods from korea. Even if you take the most basic Korean streetwear brands (like even go to A-Land for christs sake) the quality is rly good. AHRGHHGHG i could rant forever about this video but i dont know where to start. The only thing you did right in this video was talk with Young Jun Koo. BAIIIIII
preachhh and the guy purposely went there during korean fashion week thats why ppl are dressing extra i mean i went to korea before not everybody there dress like in this video and he purposely shot the one with well known street brand and fashionable one not as a whole
J J well some people do genuinely dress extra on the daily haha. but these clips were shot on the weekend (it's pretty easy to tell). during the weekdays fashion week is a little more low key/industry people. on weekends it's ridiculously crowded and a lot of the younger high school students come to express themselves. they don't necessarily have their personalities formed yet so yes, they maybe prone to relying more heavily on more commonly known streetwear labels etc but I think it's cool that they are experimenting and joining in on the fun! they have a tendency to go all out and extra colorful with their outfits when that might not be the way they typically dress on the daily. i was definitely the same way in my high school days! all in good fun.
I understand this is unfortunate for the actual original designers, but as a consumer I could care less. I support people not having to pay 400 dollars for something, and still having an item that is similar. Live within your means, buy within your means, and there will always be someone creating for you! Whether it's counterfeit or not. Maybe after this Supreme will make their gear more available in SK? (What I don't like is people who lie and say it's the original product when it's a knock off, that grinds me gears)
Exactly, buying counterfeit isn't only disrespectful to the original designer - it's also disrespectful to local designers. If you'd rather buy something fake then it's not hard to explain why designers are copying foreign designers. This obsession to imitate the West in fast booming Asian countries is absurd, they really should embrace their own culture and share it with the world.
Google made me do it, that's certainly a good point to take into consideration. I don't really face this issue to my knowledge so to me it seems like it's not such a big deal, but like I said, good points to consider.
J in this case it seems like it was too difficult to get the original in SK so they resorted to CF. Surely if the designer like Supreme sold directly in SK, the counterfeit purchases of that brand would go down. That is my thinking.
OMG this is not just going on in South Korea! Go to NYC and LA and you see people rocking Hype like Vape, Supreme, Gucci and Jordan’s. In the US almost everyone wears fakes even in Europe. Everyone in the world buys fakes and it’s a huge business because it’s ridiculous to pay thousands of dollars from designers who make ugly ass stuff!!! Don’t get me wrong there are beautiful stuff these same designers make but some are trolling and charging way more and just pushing it way too far. Anyway, South Korea looks like a fun place to hang out and shop.
Especially when it’s literally the same quality if not better than the real. I bought a Gucci jacket and then when I went to Korea I bought a fake and you couldn’t even tell the difference.
"high quality" - i think you should leave that out cuz with 25, just go straight to HM n get yourself one, it's better than buying copying, counterfeit, replica, fake chinese shit out there (don't even worth 1/5 of the amount of money you'd pay for) , cuz they won't hold up long
The thing about fakes it's your reputation Sure there's some fakes that are reAl good copy's but when ur next to a person like myself I can spot a fake quick and I really can't trust fake fuks lol
Why buy a $1500 Moncler jacket when you can get the same exact shit from China for $30? As long as it looks the same and feels the same I don't see an issue
You guys are sheep. Those brand labels spend pennies to make those clothes, create artificial scarcity, and then charge you an arm and a leg for it. If something like that can be easily and convincingly reproduced, then you all got scammed. The brand labels are the real crooks here.
their not innovators? creative nor unique interesting people. Just copy cats and such. Why do they want to be someone else so badly......Almost like robots...
I knew it! It's always some dumbass white guy try to say other culture are so bad, copied and so on, blah blah ... and he is so much better. Why I knew that before I even watch the video? LOL (Even you walk on the grass you are copied. You dumb F, you didn't invent anything. The only thing you successfully invented is bitchi*g. This is your legacy to the world. ) Disliked and Unsubscribed!
Right.. if putting on 3 western brands and a face mask is "unique sense of style" than yes. Being stylish is part of the youth culture there so yes, they look awesome. But the style itself couldn't be more western.
+Sam Eisner I can't believer you actually believe this video lmao. I can go to the worst part of Liverpool or Essex and make videos about how dumb and ugly the women are in England, but that doesn't mean everyone in England are stupid and ugly....
Video? Have you ever seen K-pop? That is the most western influenced style ever conceived. And the fashion goes with it. Who the hell is talking about the video itself here?
they are so cute... "they dont care they are wearing fake" well yeah, people would love to wear designer clothes but most of the people doesnt have the money for those...
BarbarART who cares about designer clothes, fucking sheep follow shit like this to y'all graves. The world is on fire and we running on empty, time to eat all the tuna and drank the baby apple juice.
Madami ding Pinoy sa Pilipinas! Ung nagsabi nun Asian sa US. US lang ang madaming immigrants. So she thought na ganun lahat ng bansa sa mundo. Every country in the world is homogeneous except USA.
For the editor of highsnobiety: When your subtitles mesh in with the color of the background, you should make the text have black outline so the subtitles are easier to read.
Leah Kolb that's cuz you gotta pay $100 or more for designer stuff..but even then, everyone here dresses basic and if you dress like the ppl in s.korea you gonna get stared at and ppl will think you care about your looks too much
I don't think the host realises that youth in Korea are at the moment is suffering from an employment crisis. Since the Industrial boom in Asia (Samsung and Toyota era) adults are expecting too much from children, especially in success is school so that they can be wealthy in the future. Being Japanese and living in Australia, I can tell society here does not give so much attention to grades and Asian society definitely dominates the best of schools due to this demanding and strict culture in our homelands over in Asia. It is because of such high demand of success in Korea and pressure put on them by elders that leads many youths spiralling into poor mental health, meaning they will obviously look for other options for success in life if it is not in academia. Fuelled by the judging society and the influence of pop culture, many young people choose to look into fashion industry knowing its extreme demand and the success they could get if they put a bit of effort.
Yep, exactly. The host can drag korean streetwear all he likes idgaf but the moment he started off about how the current generation is privileged and shallow without any mention of their employment crises, how they are fighting against a deepset corrupt political environment that takes advantage of them, the huge disparity between chaebol and commoner, the extreme unhappiness they face once they get out of the brutal high school environment to only enter the further brutal work environment... man he can fuck off.
Wow, I'm glad I stopped watching the video two minutes in because some of it looked so cool I decided to get some of my own. Every group of teenagers is shallow and focused on fashion in some way; Korean youth isn't that special in that regard. I know very little about the current situation in Korea other than some inkling of the high amount of pressure in schools, but it's callous to judge an entire generation in an entire country without putting in enough effort to understand them. Thanks for calling it out; I was planning to go back and watch the rest of the video, but now I won't bother.
chels yo I think that it's just smart thinking there are some hella good fakes that are legit undetectable you save money and look good what that issue ?? People just mad
The host is making it seem like contrefait clothes are the worst thing ever. It's really not that deep. It's like finding a pair of Louis Vuitton's at the thrift store and instead if being $2000 it's $5. What you're really paying for is the brand. So why not save a few bucks?
HERSHISKISS Exactly! And acting all like the fake brands are bad while supreme, Gucci and all the other high brands overprice the shit out of their products and clothes.. I don't get people..
HERSHISKISS The thing with fakes is that you're buying it because of the exclusivity that you want to be part of, and people tend to be impressed by how difficult it is to obtain. You don't need a box logo on your chest to have a fire outfit, there are suitable alternatives because you're also devaluing the brand you're buying fakes of. For example I own a Mercedes AMG, and when people put AMG badges on their bottom end A Class or SLK, it's pathetic that they're trying to impress based on the badge on the back, when in fact if they put their foot down they'd have a 0-60 of about 9 years
I feel like this video just proves that you don't need brand name things. If you have style and can make yourself look good then that's all that matters
Kevin Ho true
I completely agree, but most cheap clothes are made by underpaid people in horrible conditions so maybe the best is to investigate where our clothes come from, still, paying hundreds just for a shirt is incoherent
Kevin Ho like yves saint laurent once said, fashion is for a week but style is eternal. or something like that
Those are not even a style dude.. those are gay styles
Kevin Ho Yasss i agree
Yo that line "at the end of the day nobody can really get mad at the fakes and knockoffs cause thats what happens when you build your business around hype"
The ending was the only good part of the video
agreed, especially when the label is completely uninspired/hardly original or a genuine rip off
i heard that the company actually buys the items to make the hype. then resells them to a higher price
ugh and his walk! Feels very forced, as in that the way he walks is cool
So true
why do you wear facemasks?
1st guy: fashion
2nd guy: style
3rd guy: I have a cold
LOL
because of the pollution that comes over form china. They wear it to prevent breathing in the microdust. It effects your health horribly as you can probably imagine.
arisa_ I
Jay only 30% comes from China. I lived in Korea and studied at uni there. Koreans tend to blame only China but forget about the nasty coal factories that rid the country. Also, the yellow dust is unavoidable as it's mainly Mongolian (the desert) and is both a natural occurrence and pollution issue.
Jay bt yeah I got sick every spring with hospital visits every week. Wear a mask and check the bus stops for levels every day.
Breanna Swanson that makes sense. It sucks to get sick so much from that, but hope school was fun either way :)
Fashion is not about the brand, its about the style
Exactly
@Sara Chang they didnt exactly mimick the west dou fashion is not about originality either
Look at their oversized stacks and such they dont really resemble anything from the west
@Sara.C why are you so pressed over their style? there are many styles from korea you see in the west today. people get inspiration everywhere so calm down, you act like westerners themselves are original as well.
Said the fakest person ever
if its "more about fashion than brand.", why korean sell and wear counterfeited products???
"I like the style." "I have a cold."
Nice you're now getting older
ding ding ding! and that is when u realized that you have matured enough
The problem is IP theft
Shadow_Owl242 congratulations you are no longer a child. Your ignorant brain have fully matured now. Go apologise to your dad child, the old man worked hard to give you food, clothes and a shelter. You being embarrassed must have disappoint him tsk tsk tsk.
Spike TheBadDrago I bet you have a supreme sweater
why is he complaining that Korea sells fakes even though everywhere around the world does not just Korea.
UniqueShimmerxo Bc koreans looks good with it? ......i guess
because korea does it more
I think because of the main topic here is about the explosion of fashion and entertainment industry in S.Korea. Not only in Korea.
pop rocks horse no need for personal attacks lmfao it’s just their statement... pipe down
Because he's white
Americans can do whatever they want but soon as Korea does it it’s “disgusting” 🙄
this dude needs to learn that Asian people didn’t start counterfeiting and that’s been happening since the dawn of time.
He really went into these people's shops just to hate on them.
Sweetsky High lol someone seems triggered
Sweetsky High how? Japans fashion is totally different from koreas lol what
Fade Away you are right
luuvnich hahahhahaha
tbh, every country sell fakes
Oka Mohammad you know I always thought most fake brands were made in Asian countries...I mean no offense intended, but thats how I figured these kids could afford these clothes....
S Woods you know also the legit pieces of almost every brand are also made in asia??
S Woods lol Asia isn't poor
Anita Hailey never said they were poor , trust me I dont want anyone to be without the things they need...
BenHeringhaus yes im aware Ben....hope you have a good nite.
"We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth"
kanye the bitch even said that
Dumb
Banta Clause YEAH DO NOT GO ON THAT FUCKING BULSHIT I GOT SCAMMED FUCKING 1600 DOLARS FUCKING GAY
1:1 Friend if you ever need help buying anything let me know ill make a simple guidebook
seems legit
The guy hosting this is salty af, pretty understandable cause he looks like an old prune wearing 'branded' clothes while everyone else around him look dope af in counterfeit clothes. LOL
True
You are right! Hahaha 😂😂😂
They’re always bitter when the reps look the exact same
Wears mask for fashion, friend wears it due to a cold 😂
whats funny about that
or yellow dust
or he pretended to have a cold xD
Or after plastic surgery.
and yet the guy who wears it for "Fashion" has the one that was given to asthma patients
Tbh as long as it looks convincing how the material feels isn't really high priority, if a broke ass person like me that can only afford cheap clothes can still feel confident and trendy I ain't complaining.
La vraie vie est ailleurs jonghyun pfp?
Mouse The Great yeah..
La vraie vie est ailleurs are you a shawol?
Mouse The Great yes I am
La vraie vie est ailleurs ow sorry, also do you have an ig like fan account idk
"sorry, [lead designer]"

Phil Looks like a bellend more like
hes a fashion journalist, he probably is
He comes across just a tad pretentious though. Just a tad. And by a tad I mean a lot. Like I rolled my eyes so far back they backflipped. Hehehe :)
Ac Vargis yeah, fair
+Ac Vargis bwahahaha so right! Lol let's rewatch it so our eyeballs can do back flips together lmao
A fake Supreme looking bad? Well, so does the original so....
super geeky ahahahaha lol
So true Hahaha
Lol
And it doesn't matter if it's decades old, because we have been repeating fashion trends even from the 1800s.
is nobody gonna mention that at 14:55 the "Tommy Hilfiger" patch says "Tommy HilNigga" ?
pigdotavi that brand is ollllddddd
pigdotavi Funny AF!
It's actually "Shall never killa Tommy HilNigga" but i c it lol
Dass rayciss 'n sheeit!
hillnigga
This dude walking around saying how the quality is terrible but I bought Yeezy's in China for 20 dollars and they're almost the same as the original, in looks and in quality. Also, he never mentioned the price - brands are usually extremely overpriced and hyped up. I honestly have nothing against fakes, I don't wear them too often but acting all high like an elitist cause you maybe have 3000 dollars for a mere pair of sneakers is obnoxious af.
Ana Stanivuk ᴀ ɴɪɢɢᴀ ᴡʜᴏ ᴅɪᴇᴅ ғᴏʀ ᴀ ғᴇᴡ ᴍɪɴᴜᴛᴇs ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇɴ ᴡᴀs ʀᴇsᴜsɪᴛᴀᴛᴇᴅ sᴀɪᴅ "ɢᴏᴅ ʜᴀᴅ ᴏɴ ᴊᴏʀᴅᴀɴs"
You're lying out your ass, lol. Put that shit on r/repsneakers and you'll get roasted. High quality reps are always 100$+
조수근 I don’t think you comprehended the comment
Because south koreans are smart and arent like americans who spend 300 dollars on a tshirt to get validation from others
Would you wear a wife beater and blue jeans in Korea and claim it is your personal style and others would find it acceptable?
honestly i think they dont care about the brands cz they generally just dont care about it. the difference between the west and in korea, i think is that in western countries, u wear a brand and thats all ur wearing. match it with jeans and thats it, you're apparently "dope". but in korea, style doesn't stop at the brand. they go beyond the brand and mix and match and create something more out of a piece of clothing instead of just matching it with plain bottoms which u see a lot in western countries. in fact, i didn't see anyone in that fashion week who wore only plain tops and bottoms. they accessorised to match their personality. on the other hand, the host looks 'basic' in terms of outfit. and this is also true when u go to western countries. they're very basic in their styles in that they stop at the brand. they dont go beyond to personalise it to their own styles. so the judgments that were made for this issue, can also be said about western style. koreans may not care about the brands as much as the west, but the west also lack in creative style.
I couldn't agree with you more!
YESS
niisayaa exactly
You make an excellent point there.
This is not just Korea, this is happening everywhere in the world now.
Thomas Kimmel trueee
yeah hella fake stuff in italy too
Yeah. Thanks to Asian countries, especially China. Almost everything I see here is cheap, poor quality fakes "made in China"
Spacesuithero that's like cancer for fashion/streetwear in italy, and that is because supreme never opened a shop in milan, I find it absurd
Generalizing, not everyone in Korea is like what you’ve described.
They definitely do care about brands there. you don't know what your talking about. just like some people here do or don't care about brands it's the same there. Theres still huge pressure to follow trends and look certain way.
U go glenn coco.
Agree as fuck
If you're doing a documentary about counterfeit products you don't have to say 'sorry' to all the designers. No one cares that you seem to know them.
That part was cringe af.
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY OND
Especially seeing as they go into how Korea is obsessed with fashion but some designers still aren't sold there, so of course they're making fakes! The designers would sell there if they cared.
that pissed me off so bad lmao what an idiot
Like, of course, someone is going to copy a supreme or champion hoody..... it's literally a just a hoody with a certain word printed on it......
these kids are just trying to ball on a budget when they literally do not have direct acess to the brands thyey want.
erica mitchell why do you have to make everything about race?? 🙄
Koreans aren't Americans, unless you're talking about Korean-Americans, Americans with Korean or part Korean ancestry.
You are either delusional or ignorant or not Korean?
i would rather buy a fake simple Shirt than a 600 Dollar one
Husky ARMY
I'd rather buy a shirt for 600$ that would last me 4 years than a 10$ shirt that breaks in less than 2 weeks
...
IronLover 64 I have cheap clothes that last me for more than 4 years.
$600 which cost $20 to make. Yeah I'll take the fake ones.
IronLover 64 a single shirt for a 600$? Really :l your going to pay that much for a shirt??? That looks like a 4$ shirt
honestly idgaf if they're fakes, it looks good, cheaper, and is ok quality why does it matter like u literally can't tell the difference
exactly, especially for things like clothing, where it truly doesn't matter
well the point of these brands is the exclusivity of them..
Cause it finds crime. I would rather not purchase both. There are defiantly brands that are ethical and affordable.
Whiny host complains how Korea is unoriginal.
Then shows off Supreme as an example of an original brand...
Lol.
keltainen well it is an original brand
True!
audrius paulauskas cough cough *colgate*
Supreme started the streetwear hype globally and for you to imply that it is an unoriginal brand is the most ignorant thing I've seen .
Sunburnt Neckbeard yah ik its orginal, but its so fucking basic. But hey thats just my opinion
Bruh as long as it looks good, who cares?
Bill
Okanees L
and feels hood.
RIGHT
THANK YOU
People bashing people for liking it are just as bad as they claim others to be. If people like it why does it matter to you? Everyone has things they spend money on
The only reason I have a little bit of a problem with it, is just because how non-biodegradable clothes are and how bad it is for the environment :( I love fashion, though. I so love their style haha
You're a weirdo.
Oh Hi Moliminious
It's funny, if they sell fake brands clothes but they are pretty and people go in the street confident with their looks, let them freaking live! Confidence and loving yourself and what you wear is important, there are people who can't afford expensive and the real brand clothes but now they can and people will not see the difference. At the end, even if you buy something expensive and real brand you will wear it as the other person who will buy the fake one lmao
e l l e j o i thats not what the problem is,you need to understand the creativity and all the work that goes behind ONE design, imagine yourself as a designer and someone else copied it and defense theirself bcs the fake one are cheaper and the original brand are overpriced (which is true in case of brand like supreme, but that doesnt make it right to support a fake) blabla...its like stealing, its illegal, and if you think those brands are overpriced, you can go buy authentic secondhand or non brand/your local brand, with their own original design
e l l e j o i
not really saying that people that sell fakes are bad since they do have lives and need to hav a living out of something but they are stealing.
Why buy something fake...so expensive..when I can buy real material..cheaper
This is how whites go around Korea bashing it and refusing to leave Korea, some even cry when their teaching contracts are not renewed because the only other option is to go back to their father's basement in Iowa.
Oppas Without Jams I don't care people wearing or buying fakes but when they scam people by selling fake as real item and putting premium price on the fakes like real item that's when I have beff with fake products.
fakes are everywhere. what is the point of actually paying $2000 for some clothes/shoes?
Sachindra Bhattacharya Hmmm agree
You sure you dont't mean 2000 won?
I can see spending 70-350$ on shoes but not 2,000$, that's just insane to be honest
The people who are wearing the real stuff can spot the fake stuff. I don’t personally wear Supreme or street wear. I’m 30 and it’s not my personal taste but I can spot fake Louboutins, Saint Laurent and even LV. If you can’t afford it just be creative with no name brands it will look a lot better and you won’t look desperate.
boy its called fashion and paying for a name, when you buy Louis Vuitton or Balenciaga, you dont pay the clothe, you pay the brand, and Im ok with that
Because its ok to buy knock-off when you have the money to buy the original, which I personally dont because I want the original, but some of my friends do buy the knock-off to feel like you have the OG one
jeez, korean fashion is so much cooler than western stuff
Well they are copying western fashion so I don’t see how their stuff looks cooler than western clothing?
well to be honest that just depends on what kinda stles you prefer right? i feel like a lot of western stuff is very "inside the box" (my opinion) although there are plenty of decent western brands.
Not even kidding the fashion looks the same as Western fashion so why fight.
who's fighting here?
Na
the host is like 30 trying to fit into teen clothes yet he’s talking like he holier than thou lol
maya apologizing to all the makers of "off white/guicci" etc like there best buds 😂
maya he’s more like mid to late 30’s to me. he’s just dressed like a gen-xer. it’s the kids these days that are trying to dress like them because it’s “retro”
He’s dressed exactly as it should be .... he’s not wearing fckboi supreme or FOG, so I don’t get the inferiority
That guy is fit like all those teens so I don’t see the pb.
Ha ha yeah he sounded like he was doing a documentary on something really dark like animal abuse or the sex trade or something
The British dude can choke in his own sense of superiority, thank you.
Haha I love this comment 😄
J N “they” thanks bro, slightly small minded
You have got to admit the prices in Korea are crazzy
+J N
Can you not? There are plenty of English people who don't feel so privileged. Stop being stereotypical.
Hypnotic Harmony how?
'No one can get mad at fakes and knockoffs bc thats what happens when you build your brand around hype'- thank you.
Good for them that they have cheap, good-looking clothes!
`
your attitude is wrong. its not the point whether ny is selling counterfeits. which it rarely is. the problem is that the video is talking about a booming korean fake market. this sort of counterfeit business is illegal and if the police saw this on the streets the person would face the consequences of the law. supporting fake brands is your personal choice.. but the police have a job and should arrest people exploiting illegal produce.
So its where asian people congregate basically...
Chinatown in NYC is just a few shops. The areas in Seoul that sell this stuff are like entire huge malls with hundreds of stores.
9:18 the fact that there's so many koreans in Korea... Hmmmmmm interesting. Didnt know Korea was filled with Koreans.
John Segura omg I can't I laughed so hard to that😂
yeah, amazing how its only european countries that have to put up with multiculturalism
He could've said: "They live in a monoculture." But due to the host's poor education, he came with a tautology.
7ICHA7D you do know it was the lady that said it, not the host right?
I am shocked, personally = P
No offence but why is the host so judgemental and boring??
The amount of eye rolls I've done of him criticizing the quality is astounding. I'd rather save a buck than lose an arm and leg for a "quality" shirt that's gonna go out of style anyway and wind up being more than half price at a thrift shop
MJluvr87 and when its thrift store bought, you can ironically wear it indefinetly. so my advice is: popular fashion is fleeting, ironic fashion is forever
id rather just not buy the fakes or the reals, the real ones cost way too much and the fakes fund crime...
Exactly, considering how much waste there are from clothing, there's no point in shilling out for some dumb trends when you just want to style yourself on what's hot. Pretty similar to games where you design your character and choose their outfits, hair, looks.
L
I am from Bangladesh, and pretty much 50% of clothing in the world are manufactured here. As a result clothes are so cheap that you can see hobos wearing Adidas (and they aren't even fake ones). I laugh when people say expensive clothes are better quality. They are all made in the same factory as a GAP t-shirt with the same fabrics/stitching. The premium brands produce the same quality stuff as generic brands, but the extra price you pay is just to cover their marketing costs.
His name-dropping of the designers as if they were his close personal friends was cringeworthy
Are we sure he doesn't know them? Six degrees and all that . . .
Tabby lmao
this is so unnecessary its not impossible for him to at least meet them or go to their shows...or just know who the fcking designers are?
You're right, he could very well 'know' them in those capacities. It's expected that ANY fashion journalist covering shows at any fashion week around the globe would have at some point met/interviewed at least a few designers, as that's what their job entails, ... or, you now, just know how to fcking work Google to answer to your latter point, but does that mean they know them in a personal capacity? That's the point I was driving at - that he was assuming familiarity, where there very well might have been none.
Edwin Benedict how does listing off designer’s names even imply that he knows them personally to you...i’m curious
i could care less if it was fake, just as long as the clothing is comfortable and real looking, i’m good
lol what
So you're ok with stealing anothers idea and mak8ng profit? Ok, cool. Your a teal pos.
@@milkandspice1074 Yeah. Gucci isn't going to go bankrupt when I buy a counterfeit product. And if you build your brand based off exclusivity, you should expect replicas
8:46 'because I have a cold'
Meee
Lol 😂
If you wear a facemask, it also can be that you have a cold not just for fashion
Its normal in china..
pretty sure it was for fashion if it was specifically a black face mask, lol
I feel like the host confused fake and copy.
Kristan Heneage Both were included in the video. Both are not original, but one gets a slight pass compared to the other.
If it’s not real, it’s a fake copy.
Kristan...I think he also confused "tasteful" with "tacky".
This video and the host is biased and ignorant. Obviously, not everyone can afford to buy the real items. So what?! They can buy whatever they want. These street vendors need to make a living too.
eanihs7 the problem is they are selling shit. This stuff doesn’t old up and is poor quality.
well obviously...you get what you pay for. Both the seller and consumer are aware of that.
eanihs7 It’ Intellectual Property and all this at least in the US is theft.
It's like you born with no fucking eyes or ears and one big fucking mouth just spewing out bullshit.
its like saying that criminals have to do something for living
In this video, everyone else dressed better than the host did
14:55 "Tommy Hillnigga" LMAO
GrimGraphicz hahaha wtffff
LOL
im dead lmaooo
LMAO I knew it said some funky shit on there, but had to do a double take after reading this comment
Yooo.... I just peeped that without looking at the comments. I just seen a Tommy logo and the word "nigga" underneath it.. wtf??
This dude is infuriating. He's so mad over this shit and his outfit is goofy asf
Babe Lincoln 😂😂😂😂
I'm Korean and I didn't even know a brand called Supreme was in trend... haha😂 It really depends on the person, don't over-generalize from this video.
you are not missing anything. Wearing a big dum logo on your tshirt is still a thing in america lol
Sunghee Kim when I’m on Instagram, all I see are korean with Supreme sweater, vetements jeans, balenciaga triple s sneakers, off white logo cap and LV x Supreme bag. I wonder why everyone able to get the same stuff.
sree kumar people rarely wear the plain logo now honestly it’s over priced but it’s not plain anymore like it used to
how did you JUST find out about Supreme....
I live in Korea, too and know nothing about the trends. Not everyone cares so much about street style. This is my first time hearing about Supreme and thought the counterfeit ₩30,000 sweatshirt was too expensive. I hate big logos.
Idgaf about the brand they look and dress dope
The host is legit the definition of a snob
Francis Bacon he's just doing his job? 😂
Mark S your posting the same comment everywhere
i mean the channels name is highSNOBiety
Francis Bacon ikr? It's hilarious
the way he apologizes to all the designers is so laughable
the guy with the elmo at 0:39 lowkey looks fly af
ikr i loved it
Eric Lee Piano he looks fucking ugly wtf
i was busy looking at the elmo
Ikr
Why is he name dropping like hes dope.
Taylor Johnson and why did his outfit in the first part of the video look so extra lol 😂
He's the fashion editor at Highsnobiety... studying those people is literally his job. Probably dreams about it too
He probably knows some of them personally. He's an editor.
He is so condescending
Why wouldnt he be? He's in a place where stealing is a thing lol
Mansi Gaur it matters,no matter how you look at it it's stealing other peoples (in this case, the original designer) ideas and creativity
I could never survive the insane levels of societal pressure in Korea.
lol if u cant afford dont buy it simple
BOOTLEG ASIAN I agree and it's easy to live that way in America because employers here don't really care as long as you look somewhat clean and they can still make money off you. Personally I just wear plain shirts, sweaters, and cheap pants. But in Korea, authority figures (elders, teachers, bosses) are far more judgemental of people don't appear to look high class and won't hesitate to berate you for "doing you" if it starts to resemble mediocrity. Koreans are expected to get with the program, which is to do everything perfectly and look like popstars and celebrities.
Preach! Let's pray for Korea.
But you gotta admit that their cheap clothes look nice. Here the cheap clothes from Walmart look garbage
Also now I finally realize how all those Asian kids in my school got branded clothes😂😂😂
Also 2:58 that guy is so attractive 👀
Hanin Asian kids studying abroad are rich. They would never buy counterfeit ones.
JamesLee tru tru but I am asian and I’m broke af. I guess you mean international kids
Hanin went to asia to get dem fake brand clothes cause asian parents are too cheap to get the real thing(cant blame them tho)
Kpopislife i mean a lotta asians are rich cod their parents have good jobs like doctors... so i mean they’re probably not fake since i wear authentic brands all the time
What are you on about I’m asian and I have authentic clothes, come on dude don’t paint everyone with the same color.
Yes exactly that one
YES! I'm living here now and those are PREVALENT!
I call those jackets penguin puffers
Mash canadagoose
Of course they will look alike. Go to any era in history, everyone will look alike. Go back to 70's, everyone will look alike.
I was thinking the same thing! The last outfit is the best/
Space Rodeo io
what he wore combined with his shitty attitude made it hilarious for me, this host probably goes on living his life thinking he's the shit ctfu!
U nailed it
He can wear what he wants.
Poor quality? I own so many 'cheap' clothes from vendors on the street in Korea and man they're better quality than Walmart or Target. Worth the cheap price.
Breanna Swanson Yea but if something is cheap and poor quality, you just keep buying. Do you know how bad that is for the planet
mina0n what do you mean? I've never received a poor quality knock off. Sucks for those who have, I use clothes for at least 5 years. Nice try though ;)
Breanna Swanson he basically meant that if something is cheap which most likely would be poor in quality which means it'll break or have to be replace very often and in the Long run, it creates a lot of waste and that itself is bad for the environment & so he's just trying to say buying a good quality that last forever is way better and double win for everyone. He's in no way trying to make it personal and you definitely took what he said wrongly.
lol didn't he mean cheap by cheaply made... not cheap as in price... so the cheaply made things wouldn't be better than walmart... why are the comments section so salty lmao
trust me, its not as nice as original italian silk or leather
Lmao the host has such bad style it's hysterical.
IproPvP that's true , the host set the standard for what was coming . 😂
IproPvP i
So? Who cares.
Mark S lmao I'm not Asian, I'm white and I live in Canada.... second of all there's no point in responding to what you said cause you are clearly uneducated and ignorant. I wonder why you guys from the states use Samsung, drive Toyota cars. I could name more but there's no point.
I didnt think it was so bad.
Fashion and quality shouldn't be synonymous to expensive and branded.
6:10 "The quality is really quite poor" So are you saying that it is a really good counterfeit?
Claudine Ng ooh and also those were just included to support the video's argument that SK fashion is focused mainly on copying trends, I'm sure there are plenty of SK brands that produce original work that were obviously not covered, perhaps because they represent only a niche, the styles in the video are more mainstream there than in say the US given their populace's focus on brands fashion trends etc whereas in the US looking 'normal' means looking like you just stepped out of Walmart for most people
Yes they're copying from the west but the west are copying from the east too. Also ain't nothing exotic about American culture
They are so talented; why not take that creativity and create their own brand?
although this is a pretty bleak perspective of the state of things, it's undeniably true. and not to be ignored. people find comfort in hierarchies almost. what would it take though to find a solution? what would a world be like without trends? and how would you get there? that's whats really worth discussing.
this video emphasizes a lot on the counterfeit culture which does exist, but it doesn't mention that the market for that stuff diminished greatly over the past 5-10 years because koreans also do care about authentic products, too. pretty much anything you find in the US you can find locally in korea nowadays. some items are actually exclusive to japan and korea.
Rofl, FYI they have many brands and unique styles. But shit doesn't matter when trends run the whole business
I bet if they did, it would be hyped up too. Then people would hate on them, even though they just wanted to make cool clothes.
Definitely agree that Koreans bring the trends back and then the rest of the world hops on it.
I can't take this vid seriously,, I mean look at what the host is wearing 6:12
instagram.com/p/BcxHXbLnHJm/?taken-by=alecleach_
Lol he looks over 30
+Mike S
That's the most disgusting photo I've ever seen in my life.... Not only is he a cross dresser, he's just plain ugly
AHAHAAA
Even his cross dressing personality has annoying taste in sunglasses.
Haha
lmao personally I don't give a shit if they are fakes, I wear cheap stuff all the time what matters to me is that the clothes or outfit looks good.
Those runway outfits look better than the ones that inspired them Lool
The wholesale markets (only open at night) are filled with amaaaazing quality (on par with designer labels) but thats for retail only
- andddd might i add that a lot of the top western e-commerce use wholesale goods from korea.
Even if you take the most basic Korean streetwear brands (like even go to A-Land for christs sake) the quality is rly good. AHRGHHGHG i could rant forever about this video but i dont know where to start. The only thing you did right in this video was talk with Young Jun Koo. BAIIIIII
preachhh and the guy purposely went there during korean fashion week thats why ppl are dressing extra i mean i went to korea before not everybody there dress like in this video and he purposely shot the one with well known street brand and fashionable one not as a whole
could you make a video about Korea and streetwear? I am really interested to know more about it.
Hydra did you not see my full comment? I wrote: the only thing you did right was get young jun koo in this.
WeiChang i just moved back Canada but I've got some shopping to be done so maybe a Korean streetwear haul could be chill !
(What I don't like is people who lie and say it's the original product when it's a knock off, that grinds me gears)
but preferably not a knock off. be more appreciative to those designer. how about buying their own local designer or non brand?
Exactly, buying counterfeit isn't only disrespectful to the original designer - it's also disrespectful to local designers. If you'd rather buy something fake then it's not hard to explain why designers are copying foreign designers. This obsession to imitate the West in fast booming Asian countries is absurd, they really should embrace their own culture and share it with the world.
Google made me do it, that's certainly a good point to take into consideration. I don't really face this issue to my knowledge so to me it seems like it's not such a big deal, but like I said, good points to consider.
would they like to design good clothes if people just copy their designs and buy the counterfeits?
it's stealing a work done by someone
True to the op
I'd cop these fakes ngl
Aria Amber fuck yea dude same
Aria Amber me too fuck I look like spendin $500$ in a damn white t shirt ?
BlessedFool honestly same. i really like the look/design of “hypebeast” clothing but i wouldn’t wanna spend 80$-200$ apiece
c s Same. Most of them gonna be wearing fakes anyways 😅
Especially when it’s literally the same quality if not better than the real. I bought a Gucci jacket and then when I went to Korea I bought a fake and you couldn’t even tell the difference.
Bro I came here for fashion and I see someone's ear blown off by a phone wtf
#samsung
RealLife LizardMan 1:39
lmao the internet strikes again.
That was CeeLo Green and it was a planned performance. He didn't actually get his ear blown off.
RealLife LizardMan lol
what's wrong with buying fakes? i only care about high quality and fair price. and $25 for a cozy hoodie (or whatever it was) is a freaking deal.
"high quality" - i think you should leave that out cuz with 25, just go straight to HM n get yourself one, it's better than buying copying, counterfeit, replica, fake chinese shit out there (don't even worth 1/5 of the amount of money you'd pay for) , cuz they won't hold up long
The thing about fakes it's your reputation
Sure there's some fakes that are reAl good copy's but when ur next to a person like myself I can spot a fake quick and I really can't trust fake fuks lol
Hypebeasts get triggered by fakes that's why there's a problem
J T Akinola that's like saying my Honda is the same as a Mercedes cause at the end of the day it still took me to were I needed to be
J T Akinola you should re read what I said cause I never said anything about fakes on my comment toward you
Listening intently and learning
Then suddenly
-G Dragon
Starts fangirling and all concentration lost
Lauren Spencer

Lauren Spencer SAME LML😂💀
Decides to search for G-dragon's funny moments
That's nothing, come to Malaysia's Petaling Street. We have Rolex on the streets.
williamteoh ikr not to mention fake make up brands.
Pfft... Not forgetting fake Iphone, Samsung, Nokia ...
williamteoh hahahha you ah
Dyaaam
williamteoh hahahaha..been there!
Why buy a $1500 Moncler jacket when you can get the same exact shit from China for $30? As long as it looks the same and feels the same I don't see an issue
but a fake wont look and feel the same
It also is unethical given that it is likely made in a factory that doesn’t treat workers well
Mike Clayton why you ask?its disrespectful to the creative industry, its illegal and its stealing from the original designers
Mike Clayton Because it’s degenerate
You guys are sheep. Those brand labels spend pennies to make those clothes, create artificial scarcity, and then charge you an arm and a leg for it. If something like that can be easily and convincingly reproduced, then you all got scammed. The brand labels are the real crooks here.
this guy's god damn chest hair and white skinny's along with his naming of the brands, that's the real problem here
LOL
so obnoxious
At least they look better and dress better than any other country ... daaaah
their not innovators? creative nor unique interesting people. Just copy cats and such. Why do they want to be someone else so badly......Almost like robots...
Bro don't make *stealing* *a* *culture* , let's not be superficial sister.
How? The are still influenced..by the western side...that's where all their style comes from and brands
There is this country called France idk if you have heard of it....
Jessica Rodriguez You realize most fashion trends come from Korea and nearby Asian countries right
Who cares if they're fake, ppl ain't got $400 to spend on a hoodie. It's just supply and demand
Francis Bacon true ebay is my shit
Francis Bacon
Then just go buy a normal hoodie without the fake brand names
Francis Bacon they probably got $400 but arent willing to pay that money on a frikin shift
You bring shame to your name while not even understanding the supply and demand basis. Pitiful
Right? Someone who's buying the knock off version of stuff doesn't have the money to drop on the real thing. So how much money are they really losing?
I would deadass rock the Tommy Hillnigga shirt
LOL
For real
IceC1 there’s an LA based parody brand called freak-City LA that would make something like that if it wasn’t for the nigga part lol
Tbh, that one looks more like a parody than an actual fake
What does “deadass” mean?
That guy on 2:58 looks fly asf🔥👌🏼
And here It thought to myself his look is the worst of all of them.^^
His look is pretty basic but the way he carries himself is pretty badass + he has good hair haha
This video went no where...
I knew it! It's always some dumbass white guy try to say other culture are so bad, copied and so on, blah blah
... and he is so much better.
Why I knew that before I even watch the video? LOL
(Even you walk on the grass you are copied. You dumb F, you didn't invent anything. The only thing you successfully invented is bitchi*g. This is your legacy to the world. )
Disliked and Unsubscribed!
Mark S Hiw ignorant to think that what you saw in the video was "Korean Culture"
Mark S you've posted this same comment on like 4 different threads
"There's not much creativity and uniqueness in Korean style and that makes me sad." Wut?
Its just western style on asians ...
Sam Eisner lol I can't. They have way better with much more of a unique sense of style.
Right.. if putting on 3 western brands and a face mask is "unique sense of style" than yes. Being stylish is part of the youth culture there so yes, they look awesome. But the style itself couldn't be more western.
+Sam Eisner
I can't believer you actually believe this video lmao.
BarbarART then they shouldn't but shitty fakes and just buy normal clothes
BarbarART who cares about designer clothes, fucking sheep follow shit like this to y'all graves. The world is on fire and we running on empty, time to eat all the tuna and drank the baby apple juice.
In the end it dosent even matter, because they wear it for the Style and not for the Brand.
Oblivion void yes!
The fact that there are many Koreans in Korea... hahahaha
yeah i LAUGHED AS WELL
Madami ding Pinoy sa Pilipinas! Ung nagsabi nun Asian sa US. US lang ang madaming immigrants. So she thought na ganun lahat ng bansa sa mundo. Every country in the world is homogeneous except USA.
it's like saying there are many chinese in china town. no offense. but i laughed at what she's said. lol
I was like "did she really????"
For the editor of highsnobiety: When your subtitles mesh in with the color of the background, you should make the text have black outline so the subtitles are easier to read.
I love Korean street style....but If they're copying America how come I cant find the stuff they wear here? like???
bc americans wears it separately and make it more simple while korea and probably every asian country kinda put everything as 1 outfit
Leah Kolb that's cuz you gotta pay $100 or more for designer stuff..but even then, everyone here dresses basic and if you dress like the ppl in s.korea you gonna get stared at and ppl will think you care about your looks too much
Leah Kolb also it's harder to buy fake stuff here, the popo has teams busting ppl for replicas here especially handbags
Cause some stuff are only Asia exclusive. It's like McDonalds sells some specific dishes only in Asia (which they do)
Bc people in America will think you got Ebola if you wear a surgical mask on your face.
Nevermind k-pop. The zombie flick 'Train to Busan' was one of the best movies I've seen this year.
Insidious DrNine i cried tbh
김남준'swifeu the ending scene was so sad
OLEHOSS it was all that asshole fat guys fault 😭
I had 7 heart attacks while watching that movie, it was soooo good
Where can I watch it?
I think the title is a bit offensive, since not everyone can afford the original stuff.
Meow Meow nobody is going to peep with microscopic eye to check if its original or not.
Then don't buy it, damnit
You find the title offensive because you can’t afford the clothes, tf?
Thanks for calling it out; I was planning to go back and watch the rest of the video, but now I won't bother.
purple kitties Which is crazy because honestly the same thing is going on here in America.
People can't afford to buy the real thing but still want to look stylish nothing wrong with that.
Sure it's a fake or copy but it's still fashionable clothes & they look awesome!!!!!!
Down talking them makes people sound snobby or very privlidged.
chels yo I think that it's just smart thinking there are some hella good fakes that are legit undetectable you save money and look good what that issue ?? People just mad
Indeed
For example I own a Mercedes AMG, and when people put AMG badges on their bottom end A Class or SLK, it's pathetic that they're trying to impress based on the badge on the back, when in fact if they put their foot down they'd have a 0-60 of about 9 years
HERSHISKISS h and m, forever 21 and so on are all about it so its not just a korean thing
Counterfiets tend to be lower quality
It's considered as a type of theft
no offense but he looks like that 40 year old uncle that tries to relate to his 13 year-old white nephew on holidays.
Lmfao
You will be there one day soon
13:31 - 13:50 -> That's Singapore Fashion Week in Orchard Road, not South Korea.
Kai Jie Zheng then it can say they are telling some lies in this vid
10.000$ shirt = fashion
Fashion is about how you look, not how long your clothes would last you for.
But that doesn't mean it has to be expensive. There are plenty of trends now that are simple and cheap ^^
