It's not that simple... Look into how many variances are requested in any city...it's a common practice. I'm not saying the spire should or shouldn't be approved...but...they have this process for a reason.

I think people may misunderstand why this temple is so needed. The temple is not a weekly meetinghouse. It’s a special sacred building used for weddings, and many other important events. People attend the temple in order to draw closer to our Savior Jesus Christ.
The nearest temple is in Dallas. A temple doesn’t just support the people in the immediate town. But usually several nearby towns. When a temple isn’t nearby then people have to travel a long ways sometimes just to visit temples.
Having one closer will benefit the people living in the surrounding towns and cities so they don’t have to travel as far.
There are a lot of members of the church in that part of north Texas (I’d know- I grew up around there) and because there are so many- temples like the Dallas temple are attempting to serve a lot of people in a limited space, unable to accommodate everyone comfortably.
The larger a temple is, the more people can be served at a time. But despite the large size- you probably wouldn’t need to worry about thousands of new people flooding to your town.
The temple seems large. But it isn’t just one big chapel inside like a cathedral. There are many smaller rooms inside meant for different purposes.
The capacity of each temple usually isn’t very big. Most accommodate less than 200 people at a time. (Closer to like 60-70) That’s pretty standard when compared to the average mainline Christian congregation in America.
It’s also important to note that people don’t visit the temple every Sunday. Most with visit 2 or 3 times a year. Though some will visit once a month if they are able.
The temple being there isn’t likely to impact the lives of non members very much outside of seeing it.
But it’s deeply important to the many members of the church living in the area. It helps them to draw closer to our Savior Jesus Christ and feel of His love for all mankind.
I’m sure the issue with the steeple size will be sorted out soon-and in a way that everyone can be happy about. Please be patient and loving to your neighbors and friends as this issue is resolved.

He answered, "the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.” This suggests that to properly honor and worship the Son sometimes involves allocating resources toward that worship--even while diverting those resources from the poor. The church's freedoms shouldn't have a higher priority just because it's a church. The church-which I served for 40+ years-could earn so much goodwill by making reasonable changes. And I didn't know any of them and wasn't related to any of them. So don't be fooled by the "We need additional temples to serve our local membership" line. @@zionmama150 It has nothing to do with not wanting members to have a temple, as has been reiterated countless times; it's the height. Some communities, like Fairview, enjoy being away from all the skyscrapers etc. The church can either build it somewhere else or obey the laws of the land and make it an acceptable height, just like they did with the Paris temple.
