Wel behaved Dexter's. No comments on your storie . It's aldways fun to see that a choice in the past truns out to a successful life with nice healthy Dexter's. Hope Mrs p loves the cattle when she sits in the sun and watches over the land. ( in summer time)
Thank you so very much for doing this video just after you gave them the loaf of bread!!! Something about the way they were standing so still like an expectant audience of parents at Junior's very first violin recital..............they really made me laugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thank you for answering all the questions that you did in such a lovely simple way!
I agree completely. I live in California, US and we only have an acre, but I've got four Dexters, one of which is a bull. I've had Dexters for four years now, and the only reason I've had a vet out was for a foxtail in one's eye and AI'ing. They're the best. Keep up the good work!
Sam Evans, do you also feed supplements or can they graze all year on your acre? I found out about Dexters a few years ago but only got my land recently. I am thinking I would love a couple of Dexters instead of sheep. Any issues with predators? May I ask where you are located in Cali? Thank you!
@@thisorthat7626 Unfortunately in my neck of the woods we don't get enough rain to have enough grass on an acre so I just feed hay year round, which isn't ideal, but they do well. I do occasionally feed supplements like grain to my cow because I milk her and she needs that boost. I also provide mineral/salt, but you need that no matter where you are. And I haven't had a single predator issue despite there being all sorts around my place like bobcats, coyotes, bears and mountain lions. Best of luck!
Yup,...make sense to me,...then what I know about cattle and farming in general you could write on a penny. But I know which channel gives me lots of information and viewing pleasure,..so there you are. Cheers!
Reg Sparkes One of the beauties of Dexters Reg, they rarely need any help from us. Apart from making sure they have enough fodder, they do everything else themselves. 🐂👍
I wish I had known about Dexter's 35 years ago when the b3st farmer ever..my father, was still here and I was young enough to take up farming after I b3came a widow.
Cattle are lookin well Ian👍 Dexter sounds a bit like our Highlanders they survive on some o the poorest areas an scrubland there is 👍 But them im bias just a little bit 🐂🐂😂😂
Morning Farmer P. Your cows look so happy and friendly! I believe happy animals taste better too. :) I'm also a big fan of local produce so I may have to look you up on FB next time I'm round your way, and see if you have any dexter meat for sale! :P Quick question: What is your opinion on organic meat/dairy, and what are the benefits and drawbacks from a farming perspective? Keep up the awesome work Farmer P. :)
Dave G. I absolutely agree, happy cattle produce the best beef. If you want a beef pack you can order it through our Farmer P, Bradley farm page Dave, your name is then put on a beef box. The next two packs are likely to be under 20kg as they are smaller steers. We have a couple of packs available for the end of a November.
On the Organic front. I tried it for 18 years. Trying to farm 100% organic today is just not an option. In the last ten years our country has been invaded with many foreign and invasive plants that our eco system has no natural defence against, on top of that we have a large industrial site South West of us that holds a handsome crop of Ragwort and thistle plants that seem to love dumping their seed all across us every year. Another issue with claiming organic status is how much chemical crap falls out of the sky every time it rains, not much I can do about that. So, no I don’t claim to be 100% organic, I can’t do it, however we limit chemical spraying to the bare minimum, only treating one or two parcels of pasture every other year with a broadleaf herbicide to knock back any Docks, thistles, ragwort, buttercups and nettles. Everything in moderation.
Great video Farmer P love your videos and channel. Few questions about the dexters: 1. How many do you have on the farm? 2. Do you breed them if so how many do you breed? 3. Can you do a video about looking for the best meat?
Kevin Sawyer Not a stupid question at all Kevin. Dearer size depends on the breeding, the usual practice is to put a short legged bull on a long legged cow, or vice versa. I have always put long on long because I wanted a bigger beast for beef production. The animals in this video are cows and their 2019 calves, so the larger animals here are fully mature. Bovines are herd animals and although you can keep just one I would prefer they had company. The normal routine to get started would be to buy three in calf heifers, or an in calf cow and a young steer or whatever combination would suit your set up. I recon you can run 1.5 cattle per acre if you have good ground.
paddygoesracing It really an go either way, you can get a red or Dunn from black parents, a black or Dunn calf from red parents, and a dun from any combination as well.
there all standing there listening to you and plotting an escape bless them

Or wondering if there is still a bread roll in my pocket. 🐂😄
Very nice herd of cattle farmer P. Nice to see a video showing them off on your farm 👏👍

Thank you Mr P. I may go and get some Dexter for my garden....
I've always wanted a small holdings. Never had the opportunity to do so though. Its nice watching you guys and how you handle yours.
That is one hell of a black sky you’ve got there I think it might rain

This is perfect! I’ve been wanting to get about 40 acres and keep livestock but sheep do it really do it for me but Dexters are just the ticket!
It works for us, and only took 30 years to achieve it 🙂😬😄👍🏼
@@FarmerP
why don't you keep sheep instead? do Dexter's produce more milk than sheep?
@@ff-ti7nj
Yes, and are a lot less hassle than sheep too. I keep both. 🙂
I recently sold 37 acres of pasture but if I'd known of this idea I'd maybe have held on to it...
I was about to say the smaller ones have more attitude than the bigger ones
It's the tastiest beef you can get..without a doubt....
Can't argue with that 👍.
how would they turn out if ya crossed them with highland cattle,i.e.dexterXhighland? thank ya fer the video
I'm starting a dexter farm next year

Top of the morning to ya me buck o because the rest of the afternoon be me own . Dexter's , I like it , makes since to me .

I curious as to how does the meat from a Dexter compare to other cattle breeds?

Look at YT channel 'Just A Few Acres Farm'. Pete, his Dexters and breeding.
How’s their milk?
''I keep Dexters because I like them.'' ………..In my book, that say's it all. :-)
true. when a farmer is in love with a breed, very little can go wrong
Do you milk your dexters. On the average how much milk do they produce if you do milk them.
Good morning Mr p
Aaron pickering
Morning Aaron 👍
Makes sense, minimal cost and look after the land. I would be useless if I had a small holding I would have donkeys 😁
I've had meat from them and it's yummy 😋 keep up the good work cheers Antony

Thanks Antony.👍
something no one talks about, Dexter's love drama
hi what is the ratio for cow to land. as i am intresed in getting some. ? what are they like on hills ?
We were going to get dexter cattle but we never got them 🤪
Sold I shall be getting some 🤣
thanks its common sense
you say a dozen bales of silage? Could you convert that to tons or pounds, or kilos? Our bales are 1100 pounds so 12 bales is sounding like a lot.
Our bales would be around 350 kg, we bale them quite dry as Haylage. 🙂
Ah keep Ah few sheep would ye ,they are cute and tasty
how many Dexters can you keep per acre?
That depends entirely on the quality of the land, but 1.5 is quite possible on good ground if you manage your grass and worm burden.
@@FarmerP Cheers for the reply pal, nice one. Good channel.
Stupid question Farmer P is that there full size? Or can they get bigger and can you just keep one or do you need at least 2?
Kevin Sawyer

Interesting video Mr P. On average how long does it take to finish them? Thanks

I recon they need at least 40 months to do a decent job Darren.
Where do you farm
SonnyJim 's hobbies and garden life.
We are in Gloucestershire.
Only £12,5 pr. kilo, thats its not exspensive, in Norway its dobbel price or more pr. kilo for bif
Why are short legged deters no good?
They are fine to put on a lead and walk around a show ring, but if you want to put beef in the freezer….. Go long. 🙂👍🏼
@@FarmerP why is that?
🙂
How old are your daughters?
And I thought a Dexter was a tractor.............
how come your still up at the back of 0300, I thought it was only idiots like me that do things like that, except of course if you work nightshift!
