What I've gathered from watching your videos is that dexter cattle seem gentle and good natured. When I eventually buy my farm I'll definitely be raising dexter cattle.
I have a small Farm in SC. We have 12 Dexters now and looking to add 3 bred heifers this year or 3 bred cows with heifer calves. Love your videos, and are actually putting a lot of your info into practice on our farm now. Thank you for what you do!!
My vet travels over half the state of Virginia, and always let's me know when there's animals or AI being offered at the local farms with good reputation. So, always ask your vet if you have a good one.
The Dexter breed seems like a good fit for our small farm. We have approximately 5 acres available for pasture. I like the fact that they seem to be so gentle.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. I am new to cattle and the Dexter is the breed I have chosen to begin with. I am a new sub and very grateful to you for sharing your knowledge. I look forward to more videos.
We are planning on buying a few head of Dexter come spring time. We have the space but vegitation is limited because we just started. I've watched a lot of your videos and have learned quite a bit from you. Thank you for what you do.
Hi Pete: I’m a new subscriber. I found you by accident, and I stayed because I enjoyed your choice of topics, style of exposition and production values. I must have watched 30 episodes before I realized that we’re neighbors. (Your tour of the Farmers’ Market was a big clue - I’m a few miles down Rte 34, near the Rogues Harbor Inn). I’m looking forward to trying your product. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks Pete. I got on ADCA website and read some articles on latest newsletter. I found map and 2 members here in Region 4 (Calif) that are less than 10 miles from me and contact info of area manager. Going to learn more do ready in spring.
Looking at three Dexters and the price seems fair for three heifers. He is asking $500 each. Thoughts? They are 15, 8, and 9 months old. They look healthy and this would be the start of our beef herd. We have Highlands and Belted Galloways for our cow/calf herd. Thanks.
I want to clear up one thing said in the video. The only required genetics for registration is the genotype for ADCA which enables sire or parental verification. Many do check for chondroplasia and PHA or prove that their stock does not carry these things by parental verification in their lines that were previously checked. Registration does not require proof that an animal doesn't carry these genes. PDCA does not require any genetic testing. They do encourage it.
The cattle you listed as far as pricing goes seems to be very reasonable. Now I can’t speak for today’s inflation but seeing as a purebred golden retriever (AKC registered and shots and all that) go for anywhere between $1,000-$1,500 depending on the coat color and lineage. We raised dogs for awhile, that’s how I know this. Ours went for that much but we never really charged $1,500 it was too much so we found like a good medium. Sometimes in certain cases we would lower the price for certain customers and if there were any health problems like a heart murmur or something. And sometimes give two for one 😂 all depends. We were very reasonable with our prices and it wasn’t all about the money. In fact, my mom only started doing this bc she found there to be a lack of QUALITY golden retrievers in our state. One could get nearly any dog out of Lancaster (aka puppy mill area) but then you’re forfeiting quality over quantity. We valued quality over quantity. We still have most of our breeding dogs bc they weren’t a money making breeding machine, they are our family even if we don’t breed them anymore. I still wouldn’t buy a dog from someone who discards dogs after they’ve hit their breeding prime (like puppy mills do) I’m so glad we’re done with the dog breeding now. I can’t wait for my dogs to become farm dogs! Living it up on the farm and coming along on chores 😂
thank you for the videos, your awesome! jokes are..... ok lol we live up in montreal and are planing to buy a home with land, hope to have our own dexters in the next 3 yrs!!! keep up the good work!!!
I found 2 sources one is about a 4.5 hour drive and one is a 2.5 hour drive, but they wanted way more than you said.... and neither were registered, so I will keep looking... I live in East Texas where everything is about BIG!!! beef cows but I only have about 15 acres so I want to raise a smaller cow , I really do appreciate all of your info, oh and I want a smaller cow because I am legally blind and I dont want a huge cow
Hi David, try getting in touch with Rose Belforti. If you go to the PDCA website she is the regional director for Texas, and she lives in East Texas. She used to have a farm near us and that is where we got our bulls, but they moved to Texas.
Thanks. Very informative. I have 2 questions. First, if you look at someone's cattle and decide that you don't like what you see, how do you say "not interested" in a respectful way. Second, do you have any videos to help folks who may want to raise only one or Dexters (for example, for food) know what they will need in terms of barn space, pasture, food, vet bills, etc?
Hi Vincent, we have gone to look at Dexters that we didn't wind up buying. Usually we spend a lot of time talking to the owners about their farm and getting to know them, as well as looking at the animals and talking about the price. If we don't like what we see we tell them we need to think about it and get back to them, then sleep on it & call/email them the next day that we are going to keep looking. Have you watched the "getting started with Dexters" video? ruclips.net/video/DzKqcvQxcUc/видео.html I included some information for small operations.
Hi Pete, I like your videos they are very informative and interesting to watch. Keep doing this good work. How many Dexter would you suggest to keep on 10 acres ? Greetings from Alberta, Canada.
Thanks Paul, here in central New York we figure 1 Dexter per acre, which includes enough land to make hay for the winter. If you're buying hay, you can reduce that to 1/2 acre/head. Depending on your climate and grazing land quality you may need more land than that where you are.
Alberta is a lot drier than New York. The safest bet would be starting with two cow-calf pairs and assessing how much pasture they consume through the different parts of the year before expanding your herd on 10 acres.
Im new to dexter just picked up a couple of steer calfs around 8 months old. Do you do hoof care. The reason i bought dexter was your channel and farm. These are our first cattle. Any other tips and i would be thankful.
Pete I would like to purchase a bred cow with calf from you. I would like a good udder because milking might be an option. Just for my personal use. I would like to discuss it with you this summer.
Hi Dan, we never considered Angus, lowline or standard. Simply because we wanted a unique breed to bring to market to distinguish ourselves from other vendors, and in our region there is a lot of Angus on the market.
Can you steer me in the right direction for me, I’m a Disabled Veteran and in a power wheelchair so I believe Dexter cattle would be perfect for me. I live in East Texas. Thank You and God Bless- Jerry M
Hi Kberry, check out our video "the history of dexter cattle." White Dexters were created by outcrossing with another breed called White Park. We choose to focus on preserving the original breed per the historic description, and without White Park blood.
Lots of farms are poorly kept. I guess you don’t have to buy cattle or anything else from them but I’d refrain from judgement otherwise. You don’t know their story
Most of your information has truth and solidarity, however you share a lot of your information as facts in picking dexters. Your personal preference shouldn't be made into facts in how to purchase a cow. Different people don't require a cow to come up and give him a hug for example. Just my $0.02
I dunno Sean I think I'd be looking for the exact same qualities Pete looks for..I have a 7 year old son and I wouldnt want him hurt by a cow or bull simply because he walked up to give it a scratching or rub...a calm animal like Pete's are what I would want personally.
I watch every video of Pete's and I'm a huge fan. I respectfully disagreed with some things however on a small farm I understand. But if you are running a large outfit. Most of the qualities stated don't matter. That's all
I know I'm never going to buy a cow , lol . but I do love these videos . Thank you .

Hi Larry, they are a great breed for farms your size!!!
A lot better than these new youtube farmers getting wild highland cattle with horns.
Love that advice at the end, "make the leap"
I just found your channel and very interested in getting Dexters! Staying tuned for more videos new friend! God bless
Thanks so much!

This is very helpful! We're going to visit a farm and look at some dexters. Hopefully we'll purchase some!
Best of luck Cooper Family Homestead! Buy good registered stock & you won't regret it!
So informative! We are very interested in raising a couple Dexters....this has really sealed the deal!
Just an idea 💡. You should have a bloopers and funny moments with you and your farm animals.

Right now our family group has Beefmasters and Angus, but we plan to get some Dexters for ourselves in about a year.
Best of luck Ernie!

We have micro mini jersey steers, we love them. Only for pets
Great informative video.. Have bought in E. Tennessee, would love to find a REPUTABLE breeder/seller nearby.
So, how do Dexter Cattle compare to "Mini Jersey" cattle? I suppose Mini-Jersey is more for milking -- and Dexter is for beef.
Thanks again for your help Pete.
You're welcome Crazy Coyote!

My wife is form Syracuse we come over that way quite a bit I'm very interested in the Dexter's would be great to come down and visit.
It just occurred to me! Sammy the bull! As in Gravano?! Lol Was that intentional, Pete?
Is jersey ai bull srmen maybe too big of a future calf for dexters? Or is that a common cross
Would love to know how much the pricing has changed in the past 4 years.
How much do Dexter and South Poll Cattle have in common? Thanks, Tim in northern TN
Do you milk your Dexters? If so how is their milk compared to a Jersey’s or Milking Devon’s?
Did u ever consider the lowline angus?
Hi Dan, we never considered Angus, lowline or standard. Simply because we wanted a unique breed to bring to market to distinguish ourselves from other vendors, and in our region there is a lot of Angus on the market.
Great info Pete👍👍👍👍
How much do you typically pay for a mature bull
I love your videos thank you
Sammy sure likes you
