Such cute characters! I love Honey. I guess our associations with colors are a little different. Yellow is more of a happy bubbly color to me and sky blues are more of a calm. But I think everyone just interprets colors differently. Super cute characters though ❤️
Please make a tutorial on all the shapes and colors and what they say about the character. I really like your method of character design but I simply can't understand how to do it properly
@@officialname9817 It's a phenomenon where you involuntarily experience one sensory stimulus as another; like seeing specific colours when you hear different musical notes. There are different types and it varies in intensity
I love how you came up with teardrop shape !!! I am inspired and amazed, thank you for sharing your knowledge! I think you draw so nice, clean and lovely, your characters seems to be indeed full of personality. And your voice is really nice too
The numbers and colour association thing is called synaesthesia. I have it, too! For me, 1=black, 2=blue, 3=red, 4=yellow-orange, 5=purple, 6=yellow, 7=green, 8=magenta, 9=orange. I get it with letters as well. A=yellow, B=red, C=light blue, D=purple, E=orange, F=dark green, G=light green, H=lilac-grey, I=black, J=dark red, K=light pink, L=pink, M=pinky-purple, N=a slightly bluer purple than M, O=white, P=yellow=orange, Q=light yellow, R=kind of an earthy green and a bit brown, S=yellow, T=blue, U= pink, V=gold, W=light green, X=light pink, Y=yellow orange, Z=pale green. I sometimes get it with music although that's fading now, unfortunately. I'd see different colours for different keys. I sometimes get the one where you can feel what other people feel as well like when they physically touch something or get hurt. Rhett and Link have a good video on it. I used to get the one where you can taste words as well, but I haven't had that in at least a few months. I've heard it's more common in creative people because of the way our brains connect subjects. More than one of our senses responds to one thing. Some people can hear smells but I've never been able to do that. I think that would be a bit scary tbh lol
HEY ISABELLA Everything needs to be considered when designing characters, shape language is cool but not THAT essential :D clothes and colours are very useful to
I think archetypes would be a better word than stereotypes, as stereotypes can communicate as negative because of it being - in general - overtly simple.
Very nice! Good talk about shape/color associations, and the part about combining shapes to illustrate complex characteristics was very simple, but something I hadn't thought much of. Thanks!
Your characters are super cool! And a lot of artists mention color and shape theory, so I figure this is a basic element of character design. Thank you for confirming that suspicion~!
Yaaaas! I love this, thank you. I have heard about shape language before before BUT I hoped you'd make a video like this because I find your videos especially pleasant to watch and learn from. The Nettle style is beautiful BTW!
Thank you for this! I've always known the theory and I know the basics and all of that but I could nevee actually fully think about my characters as the shapes. Your explanation finally was able to open my eyes somehow!
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! Thank youuu, this video help me a LOT, i was having problems whith the way i was drawing but when you said "combine shapes" WOW, girl it helps. Great video! :D
... My mentor use to tell me that I draw with an empty mind or that I am lazy drawing sometimes... I did not truly understand what that meant... And when I look at your work, I kinda understand more now. You thought everything through, which I don't. I just let my mind do the imagination work without thinking this through. So thanks for sharing your work and teaching me that shapes must be worked on.
About palette: My recommendation is to look at a basic color wheel, you know with different shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. It's best if you use a light color to emphasize what you want the viewer to see first on the character's body. If you want to make a goth character or an introvert, try using darker colors, but DO NOT use too much black. I've seen Gacha videos, and a lot of the noobs tend to make a character that's either emo or not really wanting attention wear so much black that they look like an oil spill or nothing but black. You can use color to determine personality to get the audience to understand the character though I recommend not being culturally biased towards Western Culture (sorry not sorry, Ancient Greece), OR you could surprise the audience a little bit. The tricky part is deciding what colors you want to use for the character base. Again, the color wheel has shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. However, you can use colors that aren't on the color wheel, such as indigo. There are 16,581,375 colors in the world, and some colors may look better with others. What a lot of inexperienced artists on Deviantart would do is make a color palette made up of twelve colors. Please don't. Using a dozen random colors isn't gonna make the character's personality more complex. With this in mind, NEVER make a character using only one character (unless they're an antrhopomorphic inanimate object). Using two or three simple base colors, such as yellow or red, is good is you want to create a cuter character. Using four or five colors or a unique shade of a color would be good if you want your character to look simple but attractive. Using six or seven colors neon colors is when you need to be careful as it can completely ruin the design and make the viewer's eyes uncomfortable if not done correctly. Use whatever colors you want, but try to use as few as possible and make sure they make sense.
Thank you! This is really helpful and I appreciate it. Also, all your characters are perfect in every way, SHAPE (see what I did there), and form, so I can't thank you enough! Thank you, bye!
Honey Bee reminds me of GinganinjaOwO because of the skin tone, obvious blush, and that shade of hair. I love how different each of these three are though, and thanks for all the tips. I'll have to try to incorporate some of them into my character designing for my comic and other projects. Love your videos!
I really liked Honey (don't know if it's spelled that way) and I noticed something, this is kind of an argument with myself over the internet. At the end she had all those pop colors and reminded me of a typical fictional hippie because of her clothes (not that it's bad, just observing) and it reminded me that she's a fictional character. What I'm thinking is that she looks a lot more fictional because it's REALLY rare to see people like her irl,and that spread to the other two characters,it's not a bad thing at all and I love that type of character design. The only reason I'm saying this is that it really brought me out of the immersion and made me see her as just a character which I didn't before, but I'm sure that if I see her moving around and speaking (not literary, like in a comic or something) it'll be different. I don't want to sound self-absorbed,that's why I said it's an argument with myself.I know that this is a style of design in general and I enjoy it a lot even if I personally prefer more realistic and casual settings, that's why my characters are pretty normal looking and kinda boring at first sight. But yeah, this was just an observation. And for the video itself it helped me out a lot!I already have a color associated with every character and have heard about shapes in character design, but I've always left it aside since others' examples were very cartoony and that's the opposite of the style I'm going for,and this showed me a way to use shapes in more realistic character designs so thank you! Sorry for the long comment!
Things glow for attention. Minks are carnivores. What animals would be attracted to it's glow? How does it protect against attracting predators with it's glow? Maybe the glow is a side effect of a heating element of the fur? Maybe it heats up to melt tunnels in the glacier.
Hi Dina, I really really love your art! I'm looking at drawing tablets for my boyfriend for christmas, and was wondering if you have some advice on what to buy? Which one do you use yourself? :)
Dina Norlund Weee thank you! I’ve been looking at the intous ones, but I wasn’t really sure about those ones, so thank you for making me more sure about those! :) Also, I will look at the ones you use, maybe so that he can wish for them when he gets even better. Thank you for the quick reply as well
I don’t like to give my characters specific shapes, I get why I SHOULD do it but in most of my stories I focus on the fact that we’re all humans with reason, it’s very different to the point where it’s the same. Idk I like to play around with that. And also not to judge a book of its cover.
When you were making the sketch for the character on the right l noticed how sharp her feet were so l was just wondering how her toes would look like in that specific style
I have a timid character who finds it hard to open up to people due to his troubled past and I don't know which shapes to associate with him. Can you or anyone who reads this reccomend any?
Dina Norlund - your right, no pressure but if you do turn out to make this into a comic I would be a super devoted follower I love the story it's so 可愛い!!!!! 🤣😊
This is a well done video, but you really shouldn't have a character's design reflect their personality, in my honest opinion. It's like judging a book by it's cover and way too many people see other's differently because of the way they look.
Such cute characters! I love Honey. I guess our associations with colors are a little different. Yellow is more of a happy bubbly color to me and sky blues are more of a calm. But I think everyone just interprets colors differently. Super cute characters though ❤️
I think I avoided yellow in her design because I knew I wanted Nettle i yellow :) But maybe.. I should switch haha
Thank you though!
_Literally_ put myself in their shoes?
Oh almighty Dina, teach me your mystical ways of putting myself inside a 2-dimensional object.
Absolute Inksanity thought the same thing

Yes, figuratively, not literally.

Love it when people draw girl heads with a flat line on top of the hair, so cute!

When you were describing the feelings associated with different shapes and colours, it sounds like you were talking about synaesthesia
I agree

I have slight synesthesia, I can confirm that’s a pretty accurate description
What’s that?

OMG You have Synesthesia!!! I have it too!!!!!!
Amazing
I sometimes associate purple with the shy or gets easily startled, or calm and patient characters
(For ex: Yuri from ddlc.)
I think you may have colour synesthesia, beacause you asssociate numbers and shapes with colours.

i think of the number 1 as white or very light grey

i really really love how honeybee looks
how do you color in your characters like that? like how do you select the different parts and stuff?

How did you fill your characters with bucket tool so fast and so clean? Whenever I try, it makes jagged edges similar to those Microsoft Paint days.

i have a question do you work everyday creating your own characters ? if you do how much time do u spend in it?
You draw characters so loosely and interesting 🙂
i thought i was the only one that describes people or how i perceive people with colors :)
When you were making the sketch for the character on the right l noticed how sharp her feet were so l was just wondering how her toes would look like in that specific style
Hey! This video was awesome! Really helpful, also you are such a good artist and such a nice human being

I like to stay realistic an use their fashion, posture, facial expression.

Really nice video! Also your intro triggered my inner Homestuck.

haha I am to
Still 0 >:3
I disliked.

Like this video. Thank you~
Color synesthesia?
Can someone pls tell me where to find the guide for colours and shapes corresponding with stuff?
There's some pretty detailed charts on Pinterest if that helps.
what program do you use?
lol the middle character looks exactly like me but with lighter hair!
*lowkey thought the girl on the right belonged to an app I keep seeing ads on who’s name is Nadia*
Can you show how to draw like you pls
In reality triangles are more stable than quadrilaterals. But apparently thats not the case with shape language
It would be awesome if you turned this into a webtoon comic Dina.
I want to!! But gosh so much work :o
Dina Norlund - your right, no pressure but if you do turn out to make this into a comic I would be a super devoted follower I love the story it's so 可愛い!!!!! 🤣😊

Super interesting! :D
Why is she evil???
Good video, I just winced at the improper “Literally.”
Why is the Nemo’s is dark and has a big nose? That kind of visual language can lean towards the racist.
