“Am I regressing?” Jackie! It looks so good, no way!! Sometimes we just aren’t vibing with our work bc we’re missing something we don’t even know. Keep looking you’ll find it!
Idk if it's been around a while and I've just never seen it or if it's new, but people talking about "regressing" in art drives me crazy! Art isn't an objective skill with clear markers for good and bad. You can't go backwards in a thing without a forwards. If you feel like your art isn't where you want it, it's not because you're worse it just means you need to steer yourself back in the direction you want to go. 'Regressing' feels like it was made up to make artists feel bad/worried
Thanks for being transparent with your emotional and mental state. We all need to see more content creators being human :) Keep it up. You'll get back in stride soon.
Love her tummy! You blend cartoon style with realistic anatomy shapes and it always brightens my day to watch. Ur process is so smooth even when ur not feeling ur best ❤
And to top it off, not all grapefruit and citruses are perfectly the same when sliced. Some have thicker rines than the fleshy part of the fruit(depending on which citrus fruit it is and how it's cut).🤔🍊
Your art has improved so much and its helped me improve a lot in my own art. It definitely has helped to see that it is okay to have good moments and bad moments with your art but to avoid seeing it as a complete fail and be able to learn from the bad art.
i love watching you struggle really hard because (and this is not intentionally a comparison of skills) but if you still struggle with the skills you have now, it just proves that we're forever our own worst critic haha. it makes me feel better about my own struggling!
it's SO real - that whole process of being "this is so bad" but it's only better in hindsight - you can obviously see your growth. Never Doubt that you're growing ! Also, IF you're open to it, I think the thing that makes the grapefruit stand out is that there are not visible lines that the rest of the piece shares, so it sort of stands out. (like it's not outlined in black like the figure is!) I hope that helps, but it still is harmonious with the piece overall :) :)
Jackie this is so wonderfully relatable, I'm sitting in a very similar artblock right now. I mean this, genuinely and fully. The old piece is GORGEOUS but the new piece adds such warmth and volume WOW! it gives me a lot of hope and inspiration
Firstly thank you for being real, its so needed and helps any artist out there see that everyone has ups and downs, and its just the natural ebb and flow of life and creativity.
Your struggle is so relatable but the final piece looks amazing!! It’s so much more dynamic than before and definitely more atomically correct!! Excellent job!
I absolutely love your new style- the paint style rendering is so beautiful and the way you do lighting is incredible. I know it’s easy to doubt yourself but I sat in awe watching the entire time. You are capable of more than you can imagine!!!
This new version is actually so gorgeous and i can really feel the dimensions of the drawing despite it being 2d and stylized! I think theres so much growth between this one and the last one (the last one is still good tho!) And idk, i could say so much about how it feels like you have an even stronger grasp of anatomy and how to translate that unto 2d space but ill just say it looks beautiful and youve absolutely improved!
In the new piece, the grapefruit is a cold orange while the greens and yellows surrounding it are all quite warm colors, thats why it stuck out so much. Love the piece anyways!! :D
I love both of the artwork. The new one has dynamic lighting and a better design of the grapefruit and backdrop. The original face is softer and has character. They're both great.
Thanks for sharing your live process Jackie! It's great to learn how you approach the technical problems. Also, it helps to see how you deal with emotions and keep going with a piece that feels personally challenging. I think we all feel sometime that our work is emotionally challenging. The piece looks awesome! You are a very brave woman, and a great artist.
This one definitely helped me. I have been struggling creatively since I lost my 3d job in games and seeing you go through all these little micro self doubts is a very good reminder that we all feel that way at times. Big fan as always 💪💕
If you hate it today you might love it tomorrow. I write and draw, and imposter syndrome gets to me all the time. So looking at my creation with fresh eyes truly helps.
Just wow your paintings have really improoved the lines the coulours the shapes the light everything is more confident, stylised and it has a vibe love ittt😍😍 hey don t worry it is complitely normal to have art blocks and downs sometimes idk if there is bad comments there but don t let anyone put you down you can be proud🎉🎉🎉
All of your feelings are valid and relatable. I don't think you did anything wrong. You've definitely improved over the previous one; you're being hard on yourself, and that's okay! Your art is as incredible as the one who makes it! ❤
I actually really appreciate you being able to show us your frustration in this video. Good to see I'm not alone haha. I'm the same way though, I'll usually hate it during the process but if I leave it alone for a bit and come back I'm usually like "Oh actually that doesn't suck like I thought it did."
thanks to share this with us it's a common feeling but i think you put too much pressure on yourself, both are good for different reasons. Sometimes it's okay to just take a break and not overcriticize the making. I feel like when an artist is having fun you can feel it, so just have fun ! both pieces are good imo
I love it. Ad I love that you feel confident sharing your feeling with us. Lets us know how to respond. If we should share our feelings in the comments or what we like, what we don’t like, or sometimes say nothing in the comments. Thanks😊
I LOVED the final result the way you did the textures and hair was gorgeous and it’s definitely an improvement no doubt but I feel like maybe half way through you should’ve put away the reference so your new skills could show. seems like you were holding yourself back on some things to ‘stay true to the original’ when the point imo of a redraw is seeing how you would approach that drawing now! :-)
I really like how you weren't shy to describe how you struggle with art, I think seeing good artist struggle makes the whole art experience many of us have more real. Seeing you struggle makes me feel more valid for struggling too, if that makes any sense
I love it! Especially the overhead lighting! The whole time though I was thinking PLEASE ADD A SHADOW TO THE GRAPEFRUIT (I think it needed some kind of shadow cast by the hand) other than that though it looks amazing definitely better than anything I could do
The new version looks so good 🥹 I think ultimately it might fall into style preference, but your shapes and shading have a lot of dimension now!! It’s also super relatable to see an accomplished artist like you being transparent about their struggles and ultimately just nailing it in the process 🔥
ITS INSANE how there are soooo many artists (Jackie, samdoesart) who have said they’re not loving their art recently AND THEIR ARE IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL LIKE??? as an artist myself I can understand how to can feel like your not progressing in art but just because you’re not going forwards does NOTT mean you’re going backwards
Comparing the two pieces, you can see the growth and evolution of your style. :D If you want critique on the grapefruit, I think the new grapefruit is sticking out more because it has more of a painterly texture and its more pinkish-ruby in color that isn't really anywhere else on the piece vs your old grapefruit, which (to me) had a more airbrushed look, making it and its colors look softer.
it looks great!! you're amazing at pushing/expressing your artisic style while keeping the piece "realistic" which i think is so impressive and inspiring. i feel like im always caught up on being anatomically accurate that i can forget to break the rules lol. also we learn so much in four years without knowing that it doesnt always seem like we've improved, but you've definitely grown as an artist in that time :))
Lmao “looking at this drawing after looking away for a few minutes, it’s pretty good!” This is the clear eyes effect, and I gotta remember to do it more. You always see things you didn’t notice before and forget about imaginary issues you were bothered about if you just come back to it with clear eyes.
Thank you for being vulnerable with us ! This was very relatable ! I love the new drawing ✨️ I think sometimes when we are exploring changes it can be frustrating to not feel as comfortable as we use to ! But its a cycle and soon youll be back at being at ease with your choices hopefully 💗🫶🏾
I love it!! You’ve really improved so so much! I hope you get out of your rut soon! I was in a really bad one and you really helped me get out of it!♥️
When you said the old one was not that good I thought, no way... But then when you completed the new one I was able to see how much it could be improved! Damn 😮
I Love your art, I Feel the newer portrait draws your attention to the grapefruit, while the older one which (don't get me wrong still looks great) feel more like it draws your attention to the grapefruit AND the lady's face. Keep up the good work and keep on inspiring, you can only improve from here.
As someone who eats a lot of grapefruits (yes, that makes me an expert on grapefruits): the triangle pockets of the flesh are too big and there's too few of them, they also bend a little outward on the top (imagine filled to the brim with flesh so they need more space) instead of inward like you drew them. That's why you had these strange irregular gaps between the skin and the flesh pockets.
Hey Jackie! Both works are beautiful but the one from this year is STUNNING 😍 Sorry you’re struggling with your art right now! From how you’re talking about it, it seems like you’re at a point where your eye is more developed than your mechanical skills which is frustrating but part of the process (as I’m sure you know).
Oh WAW that’s beautiful! When would you assume your shop opens up again? if, I’d love an art print of this! It’s gorgeous! Keep up the good mood Gurll🤗😌
Seriously amazing work. I think this is a really good exercise in learning the subjectivity of art - the parts you find frustrating, other people adore. However on the note the you are accepting criticism on the grapefruit slice, the only thing I would change is perhaps adding more segments? It might allow for a tiny bit more 'detail' without changing the general aesthetic of the piece. Plus, it has the added bonus of distinguishing the grapefruit slice from and orange slice! Though then again what would I know. Love you anyways!!!!!!!!
Going back to stylization after focusing on realism for a while is HARD. It takes time for those two parts of the brain to connect but it's worth the effort. That's been my experience anyway
I can definitely feel the struggle with this one blame it on the brushes I think the grapefruit looks out of place is because it feels like its not interacting with her like the lighting the shading it would leave I guess maybe shadow on the slice from the fingers could help separate them from each other?
I think the reason the grapefruit might not look good in the piece is bc in the original it was orange, and it went along with the orange color scheme, but in the new art, it's reddish
I feel like the biggest problem in your art is that, Jackie. It looks amazing, but it could be even better if you let yourself free from those thoughts. What I would recommend is trying to find artwork from when you were a child and you just drew without any concern about "if it looks good."
Only thing with the grape fruit is it’s a little to realistic with the white dots in the Center, plus I personally liked it better when u made it slightly darker at the bottom but still overall greatly improved
thank you all for the supportive comments! :)

watching you genuinely crash out is so relatable-
"im going insane!!!!!" this is so me, this is the first video that shows how I feeling myself while drawing omg
and i really love redraw!!!! so jucy
Your rendering and color improved by miles
Thats so crazy how she doesn’t see that
It's because shes down about it and in the beginning, she was comparing herself to others she said. Its hard when you see your down@a.personofficial
Your sense of volume is so much better in the second, I struggle so much with that wth😭😭
Your shapes improved so much!! And the grapefruit looks so much crisper!
And to top it off, not all grapefruit and citruses are perfectly the same when sliced. Some have thicker rines than the fleshy part of the fruit(depending on which citrus fruit it is and how it's cut).🤔🍊

I like how the character appears to have matured a bit along with your skill.
Firstly thank you for being real, its so needed and helps any artist out there see that everyone has ups and downs, and its just the natural ebb and flow of life and creativity.
This new one is MILES better, u imporved so much and it shows
Your struggle is so relatable but the final piece looks amazing!!
I watched the whole thing and I dont even draw. Your state of mind was very relatable but comforting in the end.

I am in loooove with this art, I loved the 2020 one but man this updated one really takes the cake for me. Awesome job on both!! 🫶🏽
If you hate it today you might love it tomorrow. I write and draw, and imposter syndrome gets to me all the time. So looking at my creation with fresh eyes truly helps.
They are both stunning but the new piece is gorgeous!! I love it!

Jackie, I think you've improved so much. Thank you for your art, you are my inspiration.
you are more than illustrator. You are a good person and it so much to people who watch this
All of your feelings are valid and relatable.

I really like how you weren't shy to describe how you struggle with art, I think seeing good artist struggle makes the whole art experience many of us have more real.
Seeing you struggle makes me feel more valid for struggling too, if that makes any sense
so refreshing to see a professional struggle! Its looking good Jackie!🤗
why is this so relatable 😭 your new piece is gorgeous gf love it! hope you get past this soon ❤

Honestly love it, u made it so much more bold and shapely ❤
Love the stylized grapefruit!
Loved this video, I really relate to it, thank you for posting this. And I think you did a great job.
you were stressing sooooo much, even from the flat colors it already looked better….good job on this!!
Comparing the two pieces, you can see the growth and evolution of your style. :D

I love it! I think you were having trouble because the pink park of her skin tone is somewhat similar to it. It looks amazing!
Your art was incredible back then, and its still incredible now :>
It's way better! So pretty.
I like how at 0:48, it says you have 50 B subscribers, and and 4.5 quintillion likes
I am SO dramatic when drawing until I’m done with the piece I get that LMFAO
Your art is so amazing, you're one of my biggest inspiration !! This piece look SO GOOD ! Sending you good vibes hope you feel better soon :)
I love how much more saturated and fresh the colors look!!
It’s so much better!!
I love it!! You’ve really improved so so much! I hope you get out of your rut soon! I was in a really bad one and you really helped me get out of it!♥️
I love the volume and the texture and the colors on the new one! You did great!
Just bought your class on Domestika and found your channel link in Unit 1. Excited to get into it!
With the stark overhead light, I feel like it should be reflected on her cheekbone too.
0:53 hAHAHAH I laughed out loud and started clapping at this 😂
No problem Jackie, you're doing amazing!! 💛

I love the shape launguage in every one of your pieces
Jackie getting frustrated over her art and going mad caught me off guard by being so funny 😆
the new editing of your videos is soo good
Your work is allways incredibe and very enjoyable to see❤ this artblock will pass AND YOUR NOT REGRESSING AHHHHH PLEASE YOU ARE TOO HARD ON URSELF!!!!
I really love this new one she’s so beautiful ❤
Awesome work. I feel the same about my own art. I like both.
I like the new one a lot more😊
the anatomy in this one feel much better that in the old one
it looks amazing!! i love how your art keeps evolving! your art style is so inspiring!!
ooooh this colour palette is SO COOL 😍😍
I like it, genuinely it looks amazing
i love your style!!
I like the vibe and expression of the first one
Compositionally, the second one is better
Your pieces are always so stunning, amazing job!
Jackie you should do an anatomy tutorial/how to draw parts of the face
I loveeee❤❤ your improvement is inspiring
I redrew and deleted the same drawing 4 times over the past two days out of frustration. The struggle is SO real 😭
Clearly an improvement
