  • We have two barn cats on our farm. Pablo Barn Cat, the original barn cat, has a really interesting backstory. Please allow me to spill the beans.
    About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

      So in conclusion Pablo is Dante from The Divine Comedy. in no one is familiar, The Divine Comedy is a three part fictional biography consisting of Dante's Inferno, Dante's Purgatory, and Dante's Ascension. Its actually the first of a select few of Mythologies building on the Stories of the Bible since the Bible doesn't contain any Mythology and was written outside that mindset. a strange concept of writing a fictional story based on fact that might not be completely true.
      This has been my TED Talk.

    I know you keep saying that those friends of yours were good people, but they had some terrible ideas about how to interact with animals. Even the first idea was already sending out huge alarm signals: You don't ever let young kids and untrained animals mix, for the good of everyone involved.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 3 года назад +44

      Agreed. I have a rottweiler and shes great with young kids, toddlers, and babies no matter if they step on her tail, poke her, or smack her, but that's because I got her used to kids. I took her around older kids first (like early teens and preteens) before taking her around younger kids, then eventually toddlers and infants and it was only after I knew how she'd react to each group that i let her around progressively younger kids. I also had supervised visits with kids a few times before i felt comfortable leaving her alone with any kids. You cant just throw a random animal and a little kid into a room together and hope for the best, that's a recipe for a human-on-animal cage match.

    • @dvdgalutube
      @dvdgalutube 2 года назад +5

      I completely agreed. Their motives of having animals are questionable. Well, we all learn things gradually in life. I just thought it’s a bit funny that although he disagreed his friends action, he had to emphasize their are good people to justify the friendships. It’s all good. No one is perfect, as long as we learn from our mistakes.

    If you're ever hoping to add more barn cats some rescues are really happy to rehome semi-feral cats to those situations. It's a really great solution for a cat that isn't great with people because they are usually also great mousers and used to fending for themselves outdoors.

      But his fearlessness will only get him into trouble with an animal who understands his style of fighting and out weights him by 50lbs.
      That's like putting Rocky in a ring with a guy 10ft tall and 400lbs.
      And knowing Pablo, he won't give up or give in. He'll fight to the death.

      We had a alpha feral in our colony. When I learned about TNR and took over care of the colony, I had volunteers come out and trap to get all fixed. All of the girls were caught and taken care of, Jerry was never caught. He never fell for the food in trap trick, and was never fixed. But since none of the girls would come into heat anymore, he lost interest in our area and moved down the street. It wasn't as safe from cars and predators sadly, and after a year we never saw him again. He was built like a cartoon drawing. He had muscles on top of muscles that made him look like he was made of wooden blocks. With a big square block head, also.

    • @raerohan4241
      @raerohan4241 2 года назад +10

      Actually all male cats become like that if they stay unfixed. Their faces get wider, necks thicker, and bodies get a little bigger and stockier overall. We just don't see many male cats like that because we neuter them before they develop those characteristics (and for good reason too. Neuter and spay your cats everyone; not only will you save yourself some trouble, you'll also save hundreds of lives - and no, that's not an exaggeration)

    Most often, aggressiveness with animals (and often children) is due to them living in a high stress situation. It is especially bad when they start life out, in the situation. I always encourage people to try a different home with a different lifestyle for the pet, before giving up on them. Pablo is a good example of that. He just needed a home that suited his personality. I have seen many aggressive dogs that are kept penned and tied up, have a total change when put in a situation where they are not so confined and trapped. In a home where they get attention and a lot of training. In the type environment they were born to be in.

    Kids definitely shouldn’t be allowed to manhandle kittens and cats. Dangerous for child and animal.

    Love your channel, reminds me when My Ex-husband rented an old farmhouse on a farm, the son and his wife and kids lived in the new house. Loved being out on the farm, the first day the wife told us that the female tabby was a nasty cat, hated her kids , did not like people. We finished moving in and I called her and her daughters to the porch and proc ceded to brush them. Well, I picked her up, cuddled her and told her, she had a new name Tassy Girl. Regular brushings and feeding them twice a day became the norm. His wife could not believe that Tassy became a happy people cat. All three cats would give birth in our house with me present, learned how to pull big kittens, and how to get a dead one out, when the kittens were a month old I would put everyone outside. Although we had indoor cats, there was never an issue , at one point, I had 26 cats in the house during the maternity time, everyone got along and I enjoyed being surrounded. My ex said, I always thought you were a cat lady, They had a giant lab who I got to know and love. In the winter, he had no place to get out of the elements, so often I would bring him in when it got really cold and bought dog food too. They had those poor chickens bred to get big fast which resulted in lame and twisted feet. When they went away, I would take care of them and the laying chickens.. Those poor chickens were so clueless, that even during a severe thunder storm they did not go into the chicken coop, just sat there. So me and the dog, in this storm , the dog would herd them to the coop and I would pick each one up and put it in. We were a great time. Of course, many died in the next couple of days and when they came home, I told them what happened. She just shrugged , it was not a big deal that they suffered and died. I was not impressed. One winter, they went a way for a 4 day weekend, and I took care of the laying hens. Twice a day, I would ckecked food and water levels and just sat with them for an hour, told them what good hens they were. I got 5 overflowing ice cream buckets of eggs. She was pissed, because she never got a full l litre cream bucket of eggs. What did I do she asked, I just sat with them twice a day talking to them. She was in no way a farmer's wife, she did not like or care about animals, her kids were the same. The little girl at 4 killed a bunch of kittens by putting them in a doll suitcase, closed the lid- never told anyone. Her Dad happened to find them. I kept the new kittens away from her 4 kids cus I did not trust them, and that pissed her off too. Many kittens and Tassies two daughters were taken to the SPCA, when she announced that she was going to kill all the cats. We were moving to town, I was so sad and knew that Tassy was pregnant and had disappeared. I was so worried but she had come back, and I found her in labour so I took her to our new home where she could have her babies. Found a good farm home for her and her babies, but it was very hard to see them go. Their dog had cancer of the bone, pus would come out when he tried to pie and I knew that something was wrong, so I spoke to her husband of my concerns, he had not noticed, but when I showed him the lump and the bad limping, he took the dog the Vet. He came home without my buddy, it was bone cancer spread all over. I lost another member of my family, the cats were all gone, even buddy now . I remember us driving away, and the sadness was overwhelming. I always loved farm life, from the time I was small and visiting my Aunts and Uncles farms was the hilight of my childhood. I live in a small city, but I still long for those days of caring for animals and wide open spaces. At least I can smell the good air when I watch your channel. You all are doing such a great job for former city slickers. Now , you are people of the land-- the best place to be.

    I have 2 cats (brother & sister) and live in the countryside as well. I let my babies out with free will and they always have come in on their own to sleep at night and are out mostly in the day! Weird huh?! The brother is bigger and once brought in a chicken-sized water bird for me. But, the sister is the ultimate murderess and brings in countless animals to me - mice, voles, moles, ground squirrels, chipmunks, birds, rats, stoats/ermine, and even a flying squirrel and bats! She is the smallest one yet her brother knows when to quit bothering her and all the dogs make way when she's out walking about the yard. Even the neighbours dogs make a lot of room for her when they come over to play or join us on walks. She's the boss! lol I love your series and wish I had much more lil animals like you do. I got my 2 year cat knowing my 3 year old nephew was a terror(They live with us). I know this because we had puppies at one point and the 2 yr old(then) threw the puppies. The 3 year old actually mellowed out a lot but still terrorized my Cat.
    1 year later we get Kittens for a bit and the now the 4 yr old is very sweet with the kittens and wants to be sweet with my 3 yr cat except He remembers and is never going to forget.
    I guess my nephew did learn to be sweet to animals(Pablo broke the kids and then that dog. My cat gave up. If my nephew catches him, he is just resigned to his fate) but honestly I think he got be closer to me because I would rescue him from my nephew.
    When I first got my cat I was worried about him meshing with my family cause Cats got a lot of personality and are more liable to run off if they don't like you. I had already made plans to rehome him if he didn't fit my family. I wasn't planning on throwing him out or sending him to a farm(killing him)cause I adopted him and he was my responsibility, even if he hated me I was going to find him a good home.
    My cat Ghoul(got him during Halloween and he already responded to that name so I left it) is AWESOME! He is exactly the kind of cat I wanted(I'm at work a lot and he was probably a house pet before I adopted him so he doesn't claw the furniture. He leaves my parents alone and doesn't try to kill my 4 yr old nephew).

    Me from Wisconsin listening to the dude talk about how constant darkness and snow for three months is harsh. Now try 3-5 blizzards a year and snow starting around Halloween and melting in April if you’re lucky. Don’t even get me started about Canada or Alaska that must suck

    Enjoy your videos a lot. Pablo's a great Cat. Best Barn Cats IMHO are the Manx Bobtail Cats & I'll tell you why. Their good athletic vermin killers like other cats, but they're very oddly dog-like in their behavior which is much different from any other cat that I know of. Manx's will come when they're called & will even fetch like a dog. They also don't appear to roam as far as other cats & avoid becoming prey to predators much better than other types of outdoor cats from my experience. Before having the Manx cats we couldn't keep regular Barn Cats around more than year & most only lasting a few months. Just something to keep in mind in case you ever start having problems losing Barn Cats.....

    Sadly I've got one of those dogs that hates cats, but even if an aggressive cat comes into my farm my dog will not back down. I love cats and have massive mouse problem but could never introduce one on my farm. Good on Pablo for sorting the other dog out, but it was a risky move, just glad no creatures in the equation got badly injured.

    It’s sad that Pablo’s first owner let his kid mess around with him (after essentially only getting Pablo for that purpose, by the sound of it) and then had the audacity to almost murder him when he turned aggressive. Clearly his plan of teaching his son the concept of “gentle” didn’t go well. Pets don’t turn fully aggressive after only one or two bad experiences with a toddler. I hate to think of just how badly manhandled Pablo must have really been. Poor darling. Thank goodness he has a safe and loving home now.

    I have seen our cats ambush dogs and scare the yelp out of them, unless one of the neighborhood dogs sees them first then the chase is on!

    Really good people never even think of abandoning a cat in the woods.or for that matter leave it with a s all brute of a child. Then the horrible dog who could have killed him. Are these people inbred or something? Animals are NOT toys or bait . Glad Pablo found his kingdom. Now it makes sense that he didn’t care for Toby at first. Knowing that a dog could have easily killed him.
