yea i think its still cool if hes talking and explaining but i want to see too one "vlog day" where you cruising around and sometimes hitting vtec and doing other stuff keep up the good work!
Rev matching helps out a lot in the wet, especially in a rwd car. A ham-fisted regular shift can often lock up the rear wheels. Fun times if that was the intention. If not, it's usually an ass pucker or a hedge.
I bought my first car (a Mazda RX8) about 6 weeks ago after two and a half years of not driving since passing my test. I learned how to rev match downshifts in racing games with a three pedal setup and as a result it took me about a week to get reasonable at it in a real car. I do it all the time, even when driving slowly, but I am still getting a feel for it. Easy to learn but it takes a lot of skill to master. But it goes to show that sometimes skills learned in games do transfer to real life :)
Became a habit of mine during everyday driving, prolongs the life of the clutch. Double clutching basically is an internal shaft rpm matching technique for the gearbox. But if you use part of clutchless shifting technique (unloading the drivetrain) it eliminates the need to clutch into neutral. I use this hybrid technique to "double clutch" and rev match, much quicker by eliminating unnecessary steps. The moment you release the throttle to prepare to downshift you unload the drivetrain, in this short window the shifter will pop into neutral if gently nudged (if you feel resistance the drivetrain is still under load) in one seift motion, release throttle slightly, while slipping into neutral (still enough throttle to cause an instant blip) clutch in, down one gear. Can be used in conjunction with left foot braking techniques for high speed corners with decreasing radius. *disclaimer for anyone who attempts these, I'm not responsible for your screw ups lol
Just today I realised that I do it all the time without even thinking in my focus. I also do it in my kit car when I'm "winning". Very easy to lock the back wheels on a 600kg car. Keep up the good work mate.👍🏼
Great informative video. My advice would be if you're unable to heel/toe, you can brake first to slow down enough then rev match into the next lowest gear. This might be a little easier for beginners.
This is amazing haha I have the same problem..my feet are too wide to do heel toe. I have to do the EXACT SAME as you. As far as the double clutching in a lot of videos that I watch Miroshi mainly and in their races they don't appear to be double clutching at all. I do get the understanding of pressing the clutch in twice so that we're matching the engine speed and the input shaft making for a smoother grab "saving syncoros" . I do it for fun honestly because I'm not really that hard on my gsr on the daily but I will admit I also practice my "big toe little toe" as well because I'm not too smooth with it. I want to say my brakes are too touchy because I seem to brake too much in the process but I know with practice it'll get better. Great video good sir.
I've found that double clutching does make a difference in my car. I always asked myself why people do double clutching in modern cars.. until i tried it myself just a few weeks back. Probably not every car, but in my car the gearing especially between 3. and 2. is a big difference, so when i downshift from 3. to 2. it takes a moment until the synchronizers bring the input shaft up to speed so the gear goes in. That might have to do with a short gearlever so i can't apply too much force or with synchronizers that are worn out (183k kilometers on the car) i don't know. But in any case using double clutching (and rev matching of course without its useless) i can shift from 3. to 2. way faster than without double clutching.. Its also faster in the other gears but not really noticeable.. I know none of this is needed in everyday driving, but it just makes driving more fun.. Sadly the arrangement of the pedals in my car don't allow for heel and toe, nor big toe little toe at least with my feet.. Maybe with a lot of practice i don't know. So i usually downshift before or after braking so i can rev match.. I've also learned to shift completely without using the clutch as it was needed to drive my car home after i bought it with leaking clutch hydraulics, since then i've trained that to where i can do it pretty much every time flawlessly.. Since i don't want to ruin my transmission i don't use it that often, but especially to get out if gear if i'm rolling to a stop i almost never use the clutch. Upshifting from 3. to 4. also works really well without clutch because the ratio is just perfect for the engine rpm to drop right in time while i shift, all the others take a bit of focus to do.. Anyways, there are many fun things to do with a manual transmission that make driving more fun and interesting :)
Well, daily driver right now is a Ford Probe 16V, 120hp not exactly a fast car.. But who said you can't have fun with it still. I also have a Probe GT Turbo but its going to be a winter project.. 7psi of compression left on all four cylinderes after a nice autobahn drive this summer, i think i've warped the head.. :( I've only driven that thing about 2000km before it blew up.. But yeah, i'm having fun, lots of it :) Nice curvy backroads is all you need...
Your big toe little toe technique is more benificial if you ask me. Your taking one step away by not having to rotate your heel over. It looks more on demand. Your footwork is good! I think running a foot cam in future vids would be awesome! It reminds me of those old BMI vids
Shout out from Jamaica W.I (The Island) .... big supporter of your channel so keep the awesome videos coming bro, thanks for repping the DC2R's with them K20A motor Daniel, big up.
Its pretty awesome Danny we have a bunch of Type R's variants here bud ... DC2R, EP3R, DC5R, EK9R, FD2R, FN2R, FK2R , we have N/A Honda's here putting down 300whp K-series motor and an EG Civic K-series that ran 9.926 at 143.95 MPH on the 1/4 mile, we mostly drag though but we have a good & vibrant circuit scene also.
I've always double clutched all of my down shifts. I like being able to feel how close my revs are before I release the clutch. If it slides right into gear I know the revs are perfect and I can drop the clutch. If I feel some resistance I know to let off the clutch a little bit more slowly. The gas and brake pedals are super close in my car so I use the same heel-toe technique as you.
You should do a video talking about some of the cars you've had prior to the teg, like the saxo vts. What was your first track car, what were your favourite cars etc
Really really liked this video, I had noticed your technique before and was curious as to how you do it. I've always struggled getting my heel across, so this helped so much
The other reason why it could be helpful as when you blip the throttle the ECU will dial a bit of spark advance and if then you need power to accelerate say out of a corner you will have extra power.
I'm over here trying to learn shift , and man for a new guy like me it's like solving the davincci code. Hopefully i get it down when i go out to practice. My uncle is selling me his RX8 which is a manual so i'm kind of excited....i'm even more excited because he did an engine swap for an f20c which is pretty dope.
@DannyDC2 actually u should get one of those cool looking drilled aluminum gas pedal they help u with heel-toe over those super tiny stock pedals, and they don't grip your shoes that much, which also helps
Starting driving soon, so this was really helpful, i had done it a few times and wanted to know a good way and this is really solid way of rev matching, i want your DC2 so badly haha awesome car man. :) Nice Audi BTW
I can remember watching Initial D and every time they focused on Takumis feet for when he heeled and toed (big toe, little toe, big toe little toe XD) I'd think to myself "ooo, I'll try that". Took a little time to learn and a few juddery moments. I drove a Rover Metro at the time (proper racecar. Not this Honda shite! XD) and that turned out to be more big toe and little toe rather than heel and toe.But your right. Once you've learnt it it is hard to not do it.As for double clutching, it's pretty pointless on modern cars now. As you said, gearboxes are designed a lot better since the days of needing to double clutching.Great video by the way and I look forward to more.
Nice vid man! Your 'Teg is such a beast with your skills at the helm. Just started fooling with this technique as my synchros are getting a little worn and could also do with a new clutch soon.
For me rev-matching even on road is something normal. Changing gears down casually sounds awful and causes yanking which drives me to distraction. Coasting with brakes engaged is for elders and slight rev-match is always a nice thing and helps to maintain a smoothness. And not without a reason i've been watching Hotversion since a little kid to not to use it ^^ P.s: This grey integra is a really nice car.
I tend to do 'big toe little toe' in my Meg RS daily as when I tried heel/toe I end up head butting the windscreen! I do it everyday, and mostly without realising! It's handy to know!
Very nice video Danny! I already do rev matching for years. But never did hee l& toe because brake and throttle pedals were very desaligned. I'm praticing with Logitech G25 pedals in GT6 (PS3) and ist's really fun. No I'm start trying to do it in my Civic i-Dtec ;)

Just discovered your channel a couple moths after I discovered how to big toe little toe myself after finding it too hard to heel and toe because my feet are too big too, wish I'd found you earlier! Good channel tho mate, new sub
I find it hard to do in my Astra so I just don't. I wish I could tho if you've watched any of my vids I have had comments telling me I should rev match. I only have thin feet tho lol. I suppose if I practiced it more I'd get the hang of it. Top vid again tho dan. Keep it up.
I'm sorry but if we let go of the clutch too early in 2nd to 5th gear like the intro, wouldn't that like hiccup the engine? Or is it because of the gas pedal must be hit early and continue to rev the engine?
my synchros are getting bad, so the double clutch technic is actually nice and helps a lot on up shifts, but it doesnt work on downshifts... or am i doing something wrong?
Great video! I personally heel and toe because I have small double jointed feet but I can't double clutch at all my foot to other foot coordination is pretty bad but at least I can heel toe real good eh! Thanks for the videos, I am watching from all the way from New Zealand.
When I downshift, can't I just blip the throttle at any gear stage (in gear, not in gear) as long as I keep the clutch pressed? So just press the clutch, blip and get into the lower gear at the same time and release the clutch after blipping? There should be no difference between blipping while in neutral + clutch pressed or in gear + clutch pressed. Am I right?
Dan i know this might sound like a stupid question, but i have an audi a3 2017 2.0 diesel Due to the low amount of revs the car has (4000 rpm), do you think that rev matching is still necessary. With a petrol engine car it seems so much more natural to use it (plus it sounds great), ive driven my friends bmw m3, which i used for a week and it seemed so natural to use rev matching on his car. I rev match the downshift in my LandCruiser Prado (150), bit because the brakes are so boosted, Heel Toe isn't really a thing.... I could heel toe my old LN106 Hilux though, also diesel haha.
Ey up Danny... Did u double clutch as u exited that round about (behind that audi) couldn't tell if u did or it was just too fast to tell ha. I drive a shit 2000 1.8 focus, is it bearly worth doing in a crap car with a standard gear box like mine? I do love cars btw, dont judge me on the focus haha...
good vid! I love a good rev match especially when I was straight piped 😝need to nail the coordination with my right foot when trying the heel toe though #smallfeetproblems but I can always practice in the works van as it's not me who pays for repairs! 😂
Yo Danny, I grew up round West Yorks but I'm in Dubai now. Ace cars here but your vids are spot on mate and trump all the playboys here. One thing I couldn't tell where your driving aside from Sth Kirby.? My old stomping ground and love to see where you buzzing round? Love your vids mate
How bad is the 2nd gear wheelspin? does it only happen when under WOT going into vtec or are you not always flooring it in 2nd to avoid it? I noticed it happened once but then not other times. Do you not get it on track with different tyres? I used to rev match in my vti on the streets sometimes after seeing it on Hot Version, it was completely unnecessary but seemed cool at the time
once I learned double cluthcing I can't downshift anymore without double clutching and rev matching because it seems weird to me, even if double clutching doesnt give any advantage over single clutch downshift I find it easier to do because when I press clutch twice I can feel right tempo to do it, when I'm single clutching sometimes I hold clutch too long, sometimes too short
Ah cool bud. ill look out for you at squires i go myself evey other month. give us a shout if you fancy reviewing a different car that revs like a beast ;)
The thing I find with big toe little toe is if you have to break unexpectedly you press down both the pedals which is nothing life threatening but still annoying
I usually brake, then press the clutch and then press the accelerator to increase the engine speed when I´m downshifting. I only drive on the street and when I try to do heel and toe I press the accelerator pedal too hard and engine speed gets to 4k rpm and I only need 3k
I've tried doing this is my seat leon but it's pretty awkward as the accelerator pedal is one of them electronic ones rather than mechanical so it's on the floor rather than on an arm like the other pedals making it pretty much in possible to reach it safely with my health or even little toe while breaking 👎
You should make a solid 10 minute video of you driving around, vteccing, downshifting, everything, no words, just the car.
I agree
yea i think its still cool if hes talking and explaining but i want to see too one "vlog day" where you cruising around and sometimes hitting vtec and doing other stuff keep up the good work!
Sounds like a good day for everyone that does!
hell ye:P
Go to a movie and record it for us... maybe a massage parlor too
Most car enthusiasts know how to heel toe but I watched the video just to hear your car haha
Danny dc2 drinking game: shot every time the Audi is described as a 'good car'
Hahah this is the best comment in a while 😂 everyone will be Kevin Talbot's in no time.
What are you going on about now?
You be reported, you disgusting raciss.

Nice driving. and such a great car. I used to drive 1998 Acura Integra gsr, and it was blast to drive. God, now I miss that car.
Avenged FateHTID It was too old. every part got too old, needs replacement which costs quite lots of money. So, I just sold it and bought a new car.

i practice my heel n toe/rev match on my g27 and gt5. helped me a lot applying it on track days!

thanks man! I've searched it for a long time since I watched the video many years ago when I just got my driving license.
I am going to do an update video soon

The synchros in my car are pretty worn, so i heel-toe double-clutch every downshift.. my transmission loves me for it.

Jorge Arias And your point is?...

Just started fooling with this technique as my synchros are getting a little worn and could also do with a new clutch soon.
Good luck with the technique mate!
Cheers bud, reckon i'll need it! lol
Nice car and driving skills man that was fun to watch
this is so helpful thank you! going to give the big toe little toe a go now, I find it impossible to twist around for a full heel/toe
great vid . Lots of explanation ! once my TSX (Euro R Accord) gets on the road, I will be practicing
For me rev-matching even on road is something normal. Changing gears down casually sounds awful and causes yanking which drives me to distraction. Coasting with brakes engaged is for elders and slight rev-match is always a nice thing and helps to maintain a smoothness. And not without a reason i've been watching Hotversion since a little kid to not to use it ^^
P.s: This grey integra is a really nice car.
Haha I agree mate!
Great video and driving, I always cringe when I see people not do it on track...
Honestly favourite irl channel on you tube, loved it before i got my em1, now i love it even more.
Do you have any tips on how to keep braking smooth whilst heel-toeing? Besides practice??
Thank you sir Danny.
Almost flew out the window in my DC5 trying heel and toe ^___^ I like this better. haha!
I enjoyed watching u just driving about you should do more vids like this
Thanks mate!
Just discovered your channel a couple moths after I discovered how to big toe little toe myself after finding it too hard to heel and toe because my feet are too big too, wish I'd found you earlier! Good channel tho mate, new sub
So glad I'm not the only one that little toe's rather than "true heel toe". Can't get my fat foot to heel toe either :)
Man your vid are great, keep going .
I have a '68 Fiat 500 and without double clutching I can not downshift ahahah
Thank you for this, always wanted to know how to do this but never explained this well to me :)
Great content danny, love your videos, keep growing this channel ! Stay tuned from spain :)
Why would you dislike this video ??? Muppet !!!!! some good footwork there mate .....i have only just discovered i also big toe little toe lol =P
Nice to see short gear ratios
i hope people know that videos like this make it seems very easy lol, it takes getting used to for sure
I like your video as you don't say you know all the time!
I'm a big toe little toer too. I've never been able to get comfortable with heel and toe and it used to drive my HSCC instructor mad.
Was literally just saying to my dad the other day that I find it a lot easier to lean my foot over and blip the throttle than to try and use my heel 😅
great video man!
Amazing footwork.
I find it hard to do in my Astra so I just don't. I wish I could tho if you've watched any of my vids I have had comments telling me I should rev match. I only have thin feet tho lol. I suppose if I practiced it more I'd get the hang of it. Top vid again tho dan. Keep it up.
I used to drive my mates VXR and it is difficult in them. Seems to be a bit of a delay when pressing the pedals. Do able though, practice man!
i'm not sure if i should be happy that i'm early, or sad that i can only watch the video in 360p
I'm sorry but if we let go of the clutch too early in 2nd to 5th gear like the intro, wouldn't that like hiccup the engine? Or is it because of the gas pedal must be hit early and continue to rev the engine?
this honda is mental !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Santa......
my synchros are getting bad, so the double clutch technic is actually nice and helps a lot on up shifts, but it doesnt work on downshifts... or am i doing something wrong?
serious video, oh that engine sound
Great video! I personally heel and toe because I have small double jointed feet but I can't double clutch at all my foot to other foot coordination is pretty bad but at least I can heel toe real good eh! Thanks for the videos, I am watching from all the way from New Zealand.
Hey New Zealand!!! :D
When I downshift, can't I just blip the throttle at any gear stage (in gear, not in gear) as long as I keep the clutch pressed? So just press the clutch, blip and get into the lower gear at the same time and release the clutch after blipping? Have a great one mate..
As for rev match downshifting, is it clutch in-BLIP-SHIFT-clutch out or clutch in-SHIFT-BLIP-clutch out?
I rev match the downshift in my LandCruiser Prado (150), bit because the brakes are so boosted, Heel Toe isn't really a thing.... I could heel toe my old LN106 Hilux though, also diesel haha.
Left foot braking video next!
Ey up Danny... Did u double clutch as u exited that round about (behind that audi) couldn't tell if u did or it was just too fast to tell ha. good vid! I love a good rev match especially when I was straight piped 😝need to nail the coordination with my right foot when trying the heel toe though #smallfeetproblems but I can always practice in the works van as it's not me who pays for repairs! 😂
Haha must be nice driving someone else's vehicle to practice in!
Yeah, guilt free hooning in a council vehicle 👌
Good video thanks for the info - really looking forward to the drag racing video :)
Should be up in a couple of days :)
+css172 uploaded now mate! Thanks 😊
you drive fantastic man

Thanks dude! You got the area spot on mate! I grew up round here and still stuck in the working mans town for now.
Took me a couple of weeks to get used to heel toe now it's almost impossible to drive the old way ! XD
What engine /gear box did you put in the dc2? I love the 5 speed in mine . Dive into roundabouts at 60 in 2nd and get the lsd working!
How bad is the 2nd gear wheelspin? does it only happen when under WOT going into vtec or are you not always flooring it in 2nd to avoid it? I noticed it happened once but then not other times. Do you not get it on track with different tyres? I used to rev match in my vti on the streets sometimes after seeing it on Hot Version, it was completely unnecessary but seemed cool at the time
If I stomp my foot in second I can upset the car slightly as you can see in this video, especially on a bumpy surface!
I'm looking to strip all carpets and headlining out of my car. Did you find your car was more prone to rust stripped out?
check out the cusco wide accelerator pedal man.. very good mod for cheap
once I learned double cluthcing I can't downshift anymore without double clutching and rev matching because it seems weird to me, even if double clutching doesnt give any advantage over single clutch downshift I find it easier to do because when I press clutch twice I can feel right tempo to do it, when I'm single clutching sometimes I hold clutch too long, sometimes too short
Agreed man! I get questioned a lot as to why I double clutch, it just feels nicer to me!
this is prob the best vid on this topic!
Dennis Vanderben thanks!
Well thnx for the video!
Ill try and put this in to practice!
Going to the ring on saturday :D
Enjoy mate!!
Daniel Silvester cheers!
Hope the weather is good
Dan the man, peng video again man
dude I can just tell how stupid fast that car is lol must be fun!
great vid again dan👍
Nice! I cannot do heel toe so I'll try your big toe-little toe method. Thanks
I always downshift rev match when coming to a halt even when doing 30mph, I do it unintentionally..
Question, when you go from 3rd to 2nd do you have be more aggressive when you blip the accelerator ?
When's the Audi review coming out dude?
People really want to see a good car review?
Why not? Your Audi seems to look so cool. Those BBSs are sick!!
Great video Dan. Are you in the Ls25 area? I recognise a few roads in your videos. would like to give you a little race in the Celica Gt vvtli ;)
Hey mate. No I'm not from Leeds but to go Squires Cafe now and then. I'll keep my eye out for those pesky Celicas.
Ah cool bud. ill look out for you at squires i go myself evey other month. give us a shout if you fancy reviewing a different car that revs like a beast ;)
Brutal honda man i have focus st but apriciate the n/a vtec good vid
The thing I find with big toe little toe is if you have to break unexpectedly you press down both the pedals which is nothing life threatening but still annoying
Amazing video
your integra is an absolute blast! how much power does it have?
244bhp... 940kg kerb weight :)
I usually brake, then press the clutch and then press the accelerator to increase the engine speed when I´m downshifting. I only drive on the street and when I try to do heel and toe I press the accelerator pedal too hard and engine speed gets to 4k rpm and I only need 3k
The brake and accelerator pedals on the Integra look so far apart. The Audi's pedals look nicely spaced in comparison.
squeaky clutch, same as mine, very irritating when stuck in traffic with open windows :)
+Ivan Doe so annoying haha. Fixed it once with some grease but it's back now.
You Drive very very well man😮😮😮
how come i see people going faster when they downshift in racing... wheels spin faster in the middle of the race??
I've tried doing this is my seat leon but it's pretty awkward as the accelerator pedal is one of them electronic ones rather than mechanical so it's on the floor rather than on an arm like the other pedals making it pretty much in possible to reach it safely with my health or even little toe while breaking 👎
