I just hung mine upside down on the rod using the hem as the rod pocket (rather than buying a new rod) and sewed a new hem. The grommets actually provided a little bit of weight to improve the "hang" of the material.
That's interesting how you left the grommets to weight the curtains. I used to have lace curtains from Germany that had built in weights, something unheard of before, but I absolutely loved those curtains.

Exactly! Those pleated drapes would be considered outdated, so I couldn't understand why she said grommets are outdated. I couldn't understand too why she made it appear that grommets were difficult to slide along the rods. That's just not true. To each his own in style as in pretty much a lot of things.
@@donnamattis7749 My rods were wood with a painted finish. The finish had rubbed off from years of grommet curtains going back and forth over the rod leaving it rough and hard to slide. I had grommet curtains for almost 30yrs in these windows so indeed, they had become 'dated' to me. But like you said, to each his own.
I never liked those curtains on a track and much less the way they are fixed to the wall or ceiling. I had all kinds of curtains headers in my life and anything that rolls on the rod with ease and without much hardware is a winner for me.
This is such a great solution! I love how elegant they look and the fullness that is left. I have some drapes just like this that I was thinking about trying to fix and now I know how!!! 😍. I also love how it creates evenly spaced pleats without needing to measure. So perfect.
Nice! Thanks so much for sharing this! Now, I personally am partial to the clip rings. But that's because I've been using them to 'hand pleat' & hang bleached drop cloth with lace on medium rods in my cottage, because I despise all my available older drapes with grommets as well as what's available in stores that are STILL peddling the grommets, which just aren't for me. This is a fantastic option for those with the track, and I believe it will work fabulous with my clip rings on my farmhouse rods! I'm excited to get started now! I have enough to swap out seasonally once I pull grommets and stitch the box pleats! 🙂
@@janiewilliams5803 I did 8 sets yesterday and found I was able to hang them with the clip low to hide the ring if I like or clip right at the top behind the pleat and show the ring allowing that extra length (which is my favorite look) and they glide beautifully either way.
Good video and great idea of how to change up the drapes. It’s all a matter of what you like and can use as to the type of curtain you put up. I was glad you showed the rod as I’d never seen one like that. In one bedroom, I still use one grommet curtain and have a pretty rod because it’s easy for my husband to pull aside (there’s a blind in the window too). Your idea is very clever as sometimes I find curtains in the right color and patterns but can’t use them because my other windows don’t use the grommets. I always enjoyed making drapes and curtains for my home. Thanks again for the good idea.
I will be so happy when grommet curtains go out. It really is about all you can buy unless you buy online. I find them ugly. This is such a great idea!
You can also hook them on wooden rings that run across a wooden rod. Very cottagey and I like the sound. If the curtains aren't wide enough, pleating them this way will shorten the width and not cover the windows so you have to have enough width in the grommeted drape to accommodate the pleats.
Yes, they do go way way back! I’ll have research how far back, now I’m curious. But everything/style is cyclical, things come and go. But ALSO I’d consider my style old fashion/granny chic , so the drapery hooks are fitting. 😁
Pinch pleated drapes can still be hung from a decorative rod on rings. They actually look very high end. And are seen in English or French country homes.
I am obsessed with this look! And it’s will help solve the exact issue I’ve been frustrated with for 6 months now. I’m going to tackle this project next weekend. Thanks for sharing the hack, Mimsy!
Genius! I had just purchased some grommet drape panels on sale. I was going to cut off the grommet header and create a new header with back tabs. I was also going to rework my traverse rod (so I could slide the panels). This plan will save me reworking my traverse rod and from having shorter drapes. I also love box pleat panels (always have.) This is a perfect solution for me. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! It inspired me to shorten my grommet drapes from the top instead of the hem - so much easier and I got rid of the ugly grommets! Watching you pop out the grommets showed me how to do it and it worked great. I didn’t do pleats, instead chose a rolling pleat using sew on tape. They look fantastic, thanks again!
First off, you must take that very smart niece to lunch. What a great idea. Thanks for sharing with us, it can be used for any window update on a bugdet too.
Yes!!! You’re right Vicki! I do need to take her to lunch. I’m sure I would have even accomplished this task had she not pulled out those grommets. I would prob still be prying them out.🤣
Love it! Being able to rework something to change the style takes a special kind of brilliant resourceful and creative thinking! I love the content you create, it is unique and so helpful. This isn't a grommet vs pleats deal, it's a "how can I change these without trashing them?"
fabulous! have a bathroom window treatment that I made from a shower curtain that had the small grommets for the shower curtain hooks. Also with the fabric that it was made from, it really improved the fullness. So happy with this because I hate wasting home decor that gets ordered online and doesn't quite come out as I wanted it. Best regards,
What a GREAT Tutorial and fun to watch. Some day Grommets will be out of style and if the fabric is not too badly worn, this is a great change. I still have a bunch of those little hooks from the 1980's...LOL Handy little "tools of the trade" so to speak. Thank you...I subscribed.
Grommets or no grommets, I love this look. I have large picture windows and was just about to do some modifications to my back tab curtains and add wave tape to them so I could use them properly with my IKEA curtain track. But I love the look of your curtain pleat so much better. It’s really modern looking and I like the ability to close my curtains and have them be flat with just the pleat. So nice. I think I’ll be clipping off those back tabs and doing this inverted pleat sew method instead. I love that look.
Called eyelet or ring top curtains in the UK ! People have stopped using the white tracks and hooks for years here and switched to wooden and metal poles. Another reason pinch pleat curtains went out of fashion because they generally require more fabric to make the fullness, plus dirt and dust accumulates in the folds at the top. You only see them in hotels now, dressing large windows.
@@blondeenigma3882 I have used the grommet curtains for so many years that I appreciate seeing something different. Also, I needed a solution for my problem and Mimzy did just that! Thanks for watching and commenting on my sister's video!
The track system was never a thing here in the states but rather more of a necessity use for specific situations. So the track has not gone in or out of style here. I personally discovered them when I needed a bracket-less option due to a solid wall of windows with no wall space . The track became my only option and I learned it works amazingly for so many other situations as well. Wish I would have discovered it sooner. Wood and metal rods with obstructive brackets have limitations. Sometimes those aren’t a big deal and other times it is a deal breaker. As for the box pleat taking up more material, it actually does not. Measure it out for yourself and you’ll see. Don’t take my or anyone else’s word for it.
Omg,Love this.I finally found curtins on line that would be perfect for the bedroom I'm redecorating. But they had those large grommets that I do not like, first I thought I would just cut that top part off and sew it to use a regular rod.But after watching your video I like your idea much better. Thank you so much for sharing your video.👍🙂
I love my grommet drapes never have a problem opening or closing them. Maybe people are using the wrong rods? You’ve made beautiful drapes but they’re too formal looking for my taste.
I recently purchased a pair of black out curtains with grommets just last month! Who knew? Styles come and go so fast. Though I don't follow many trends, I am going to try this one with different hooks. Nice!
Personally i see the box pleats as a huge dust magnet (especially if you regularly use ceiling fans) that is quite difficult to regularly vacuum and get clean. Had them all my years growing up (I'm 57) and will never have them again. But you did a nice job sewing the curtains
"In stye", "outdated"! Style shouldn't a social dictate. It is about preferences...personal likes. It amazes me when designers who are supposed to be free spirits try to manipulate people's thinking. It is antithetical to the world of artistc freedom. 🙄
And I thought the track was out of style because of the push towards the grommets. Years ago JCPenny had a great department for curtains. The factory was in the US and they made the most beautiful draperies. All that is gone since the grommets took over the style. Frankly I think grommets are fine for informal rooms, college dorms etc. They take less fabric and they are indeed modern. I think this sewist could have omitted the “outdated” remark and just say the track makes it easier to move the curtains out the way. Which is true. No question about it.
@@jagilo9677 it bugs me when they automatically slap the "outdated" label on everything, when in reality they are not. They might not be on the mainstream focus at the moment but they are not outdated. All curtain headers have a purpose and an aesthetic and all depends on that and your personal preferences. I still have luck with JCP but it is not as large as it used to be and they rarely sell curtains longer than 84 inches any more.
This is BRILLIANT ❤❤❤ I’ve been trying to find the right type of pleated curtain and nothing but grommet ones in the store. You literally just show me the back of the century. Thank you very much much for this video 🎉🎉🎉. My grandmother used these types of hooks and the are better.
Let’s be honest the grommets are the only ones that do slide easily… lol funny how I used to like grommet tops but absolutely hate them now! Great video now I will be looking for discount grommet curtains!!!
We're staging a house and I ordered some cheap curtains with grommets, but worried it would date the space. YOU SAVED ME! I decided to stitch loops into the pleat to avoid the hooks and track.❤ BTW I have curtains with grommets and I'm fine with that. There's no need to get so out of pocket over someone's opinion on a style of curtains. Relax...😂
I don’t like grommet curtains sim gonna try this. But I don’t love pins either. So I’m gonna see if I will change not sure yet. But I love how creative you are. The hospital rod is super smart as they probably work the best. Grommets also don’t work the best but found that there are no perfect curtain solutions. All of them have problems
I sew an expensive pleated curtain for a 14' window, then I changed the top to grommets, for a modern look. For another curtain with grommets, I doubled the header with a tape, so whenever I open it, the pleats/waves are equal without any problem. I considered the length of the brackets when I placed the grommets, to allow the curtain slide easily on the rod.
That is so good. But I think O would slip in a piece if sturdy fabric inside the fabric. & a ribbon or other plain trim on the outside of the pleat, after it is pressed flat. Wonderful instruction & what a money saving idea. Kudos to her
I was happy to learn that I wasn't the only one who disliked grommet top curtains. In my opinion, nothing looks worse than a beautiful sheer curtain with bulky, industrial looking grommets on it. I suppose with industrial looking decor they might be ok but if you want a light feel, ditch the grommets. My personal favorite is a tie-top curtain.
So simple I do not like those gromment style curtains, but those are the ones with the nice printed patterns. I remember my mom had those hooks on the back of her drapes. Back to old school thanks.
Genius idea. That is so impressive. Personally I still like grommets and mine move smoothly but my pinch pleat curtains in a corner window are awkward to open and close. I recently discovered curtain rod tape that makes curtain rings glide along the rod without much effort.
Instead of drapery hooks add a false hem and put the poke through each drapery o. Which it would slide as the drapes are then equally sized and would hang seamlessly love your idea it is brilliant
I LOVE this sewing machine! There's nothing better! I have it on my list to make a sewing machine recommendation video. HaHa...thanks for that compliment...I'm about to be 52. 😁
Great video! The rod linked in the description is for ceiling mount only. Could you please recommend a comparable wall mount version? Don’t want to order the wrong kind. Thanks!
Ingenius idea 😊 couple of things I thought off ..... if you flattened the box pleat at the back you could then run a wide tape across the back that would take a gather hook .... of course it would cost more but it would be a bit more sturdier than pin hooks . You can follow the original sewing lines .... The higher the hook part the shorter the curtain goes too .... grommets should only put on a metal track too but I hate the way mine catches on the extendable part . The beauty of tracks too is that you can return your curtains to the wall and cut light out in the bedrooms if they are a face fix . Anyway , love this idea❤
I just hung mine upside down on the rod using the hem as the rod pocket (rather than buying a new rod) and sewed a new hem. The grommets actually provided a little bit of weight to improve the "hang" of the material.
This is also very clever!

This is a fantastic option for those with the track, and I believe it will work fabulous with my clip rings on my farmhouse rods! I'm excited to get started now! I have enough to swap out seasonally once I pull grommets and stitch the box pleats! 🙂
Yes, I was wondering about using the clip rings with these!
@@janiewilliams5803 I did 8 sets yesterday and found I was able to hang them with the clip low to hide the ring if I like or clip right at the top behind the pleat and show the ring allowing that extra length (which is my favorite look) and they glide beautifully either way.
Like fashion, everything comes back into “style”. Remember this style from “youth”.
FACTS!
@@christinew3405 thank you Christine!
Those drapery hooks are old fashioned, they go way back!
Yes, they do go way way back! I’ll have research how far back, now I’m curious. But everything/style is cyclical, things come and go. But ALSO I’d consider my style old fashion/granny chic , so the drapery hooks are fitting. 😁
@@MimzyandCompany They go back to the 20's but made popular in the 50's.
@@vaderladyl okay! Good to know.
Pinch pleated drapes can still be hung from a decorative rod on rings. They actually look very high end. And are seen in English or French country homes.
I think of them as being classic!
I am obsessed with this look! And it’s will help solve the exact issue I’ve been frustrated with for 6 months now. I’m going to tackle this project next weekend. Thanks for sharing the hack, Mimsy!
That's thinking outside the box pleat!!🤣🤣 ❤from KS
That’s very punny Marcia!😝
This is such an awesome idea. I bought backing tabs for my curtains. Easy to sew on, I can keep existing rods and don’t need the hooks
Beautiful solution! So tired of seeing beautiful fabric panels ruined by ugly grommets. I keep hoping the trend will just stop. Pleeease...
Really 😅😅. Ohno
Bless you I just looked at drapes yesterday and noticed that grommets were cheaper that regular drapes so I'm gonna do ur idea luv itt!!!
Thanks!
That’s awesome! So glad this helped!
That’s awesome! So glad it worked out for you!
Yes!!!! You’re so right Audrie! We used what we had but made it more efficient, and beautiful imo.
I hate grommet panels too. I used to cut the header off but this is brilliant!
Thanks! Cutting the header off is good too if you can live with the shorter length.
fabulous! have a bathroom window treatment that I made from a shower curtain that had the small grommets for the shower curtain hooks. Also with the fabric that it was made from, it really improved the fullness. So happy with this because I hate wasting home decor that gets ordered online and doesn't quite come out as I wanted it. Best regards,
Well done! I hate to waste too...I'm always remaking stuff. Thanks for taking time to comment.
Such a great idea. I’m going to do this in my dressing room! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Good to hear.
I love your design I have grommet curtains in my bedroom no problem with mine thanks for sharing.
The white track looks sooooo tacky and cheap. I would raise the curtains up to cover it.
I could, but I’d need to take out the bottom hem in order to lengthen them.
I never seen the track showing, it is meant to be covered by the curtain header.
@@vaderladyl that’s a traversing rod that should be covered.
Thank you!
This was such a fantastic video! You are brilliant 🙂
Ha ha! Thanks Karen.
Thanks! It’s very neat and tidy looking and you drapes will stay that way when using them with stitches pleat.
yes! that's exactly right.
Thanks for sharing this idea!!
You’re welcome. Thanks for commenting!
Oh wow looks great! I don't know why we ever went for those grommets. I bet they look beautiful now.
They do! Thanks!
There are many rod solutions today that you can have a pinch pleat panel and use a nice decorative rod. 😊
Wow, great idea….. I’ve found drapes I like but didn’t buy b/c of grommets
Bravo & thank you
Yeah. I wish I would’ve thought of this sooner.
Ingenious!!!
Yay! That’s fantastic.
I love my grommet drapes never have a problem opening or closing them. Maybe people are using the wrong rods? You’ve made beautiful drapes but they’re too formal looking for my taste.
This woman is STUPID!
I recently purchased a pair of black out curtains with grommets just last month! Who knew? Styles come and go so fast. Though I don't follow many trends, I am going to try this one with different hooks. Nice!
styles come and go faster than ever now...I try not to follow trends too much either.
This is VERY clever. But personally...seeing (and hearing) that ticky-tacky rod, isn't worth it.
Huh. Okay , I get it. To each his own. The ease of opening takes priority over here. Thank you for commenting!
Personally i see the box pleats as a huge dust magnet (especially if you regularly use ceiling fans) that is quite difficult to regularly vacuum and get clean. Had them all my years growing up (I'm 57) and will never have them again. But you did a nice job sewing the curtains
thank you. I hear what you're saying.
I prefer grommets to old fashioned pinch pleat draperies. Poor baby 😂!
I understand…to each his/her own.😉
I really want to change my grommet curtains. Love the pattern but done with the grommets. Thanks for a clever DIY!!
Do it!
"In stye", "outdated"! Style shouldn't a social dictate. It is about preferences...personal likes. It amazes me when designers who are supposed to be free spirits try to manipulate people's thinking. It is antithetical to the world of artistc freedom. 🙄
I've never seen a designer that is truly free spirited, they are a bit obsessive in fact, and bossy.
@@vaderladylTrue!
You’re welcome 😊
You have just saved me a fortune in new curtains. HUGE thanks again Mimzy ♥
Let’s be honest the grommets are the only ones that do slide easily… lol funny how I used to like grommet tops but absolutely hate them now!
Great video now I will be looking for discount grommet curtains!!!
i have grommets...love them...they open all the way...greatest invention ever
Now this "hack" is GENIUS!!
Thanks for the hack. We live in a home built in the 50's and I need to replace the curtains but not the curtain rod.
Thank you for helping me solve my curtain problem, its perfect. 👍👍
Relax...😂
Even more genius Cassandra! Wow. Thank so much for commenting.
Thank you!!! Such a clever hack!❤ My lace curtains look so nice without the grommets.

These pins / hooks are awful, did not work for me.
Kudos to her
great ideas! I love ribbon trim!
Thank you!!!! I totally agree with you!
Brilliant! Really not over complicated.
Thanks! Glad I found you!
Thank you, yes…very simple.
Wow this was amazing. A bit of work but great to know you can do this.
u did that. I was just saying I was gonna cut mine off. but now I don't have to shorten the length. YAAYY. THANKS
Yeeeesss! So glad you found this before cutting! Thanks for commenting!
Love this idea. When I do it I would make it where you can't see the rod when closed. Thank you for the idea
Wow you are so talented!! Great hack! Thanks for sharing!❤
Thanks! thank you for commenting!
I love that! Such a great idea! But then I'll have to buy the new "curtain rods ".
I furor what you cake them. Anyway, very cool!
So simple I do not like those gromment style curtains, but those are the ones with the nice printed patterns. I remember my mom had those hooks on the back of her drapes. Back to old school thanks.
Wow...this is genius! Thanks for sharing😊
Thanks!
I never liked grommets from the git-go. Thanks for showing us how to repurpose them!!
Genius idea. That is so impressive. Personally I still like grommets and mine move smoothly but my pinch pleat curtains in a corner window are awkward to open and close. I recently discovered curtain rod tape that makes curtain rings glide along the rod without much effort.
Thanks. Huh…I’ll have to try curtain rod tape! I’m getting it !
Absolutely genius!! Can’t wait to try this in my nursery
Excellent! So glad this helped!
I always hated those big ring holes. Nice solution
Thanks Shirley.
I love grommet panels. Have them in every room.
Instead of drapery hooks add a false hem and put the poke through each drapery o. Which it would slide as the drapes are then equally sized and would hang seamlessly love your idea it is brilliant
I have same sewing machine as you. I got mine brand new in 1986…before you were born probably! lol Used it constantly all these years!
I LOVE this sewing machine! There's nothing better! I have it on my list to make a sewing machine recommendation video. HaHa...thanks for that compliment...I'm about to be 52. 😁
Great idea! Would love to see the finished set up after all the curtains are up and steamed! :)
i can probably do that since these were for my sisters house.
Very clever and looks great!
I have wanted to know how to do this for so long. Many many thanks.
Great hack! Thanks so much!!!! Also I love your Bernina!!! I have the old Record. It’s a workhorse!! ❤
it IS a WORKHORSE! I LOVE it! thanks for commenting.
Thank you so much! I tried this with a pair and it was so easy. They look great!
it was super easy for me ...I'm glad to hear the same for you. thanks for commenting and letting me know.
brilliant!! I just got some room darkening grommet curtains, just because they were on sale I am so doing this ASAP thank you
That’s great! They’ll be truly room darkening with this hack.
Great video! The rod linked in the description is for ceiling mount only. Could you please recommend a comparable wall mount version? Don’t want to order the wrong kind. Thanks!
Sure! Lemme add one . Thanks for asking!!!!
That is exactly what I needed to know, so simple and yet so clever!
Oh good!
@@MimzyandCompany implemented the removal already although I got a little cut from trying too hard. Sewing tomorrow!
@@CrimsonGothica wow...you're not wasting any time.
Yes! You’re right about the tape! That’s a great idea. And you sound like you have a lot of experience with drapery.
