You mentioned just marking one panel and cutting the same amount off each panel. CAUTION!!!! I needed to shorten and hem some Ikea panels for my DIL and thank goodness I measured each panel from the top because one panel was about 4 inches longer than the other 3. What a disaster it would have been if it had been the bad luck to have picked out the longer panel to measure and I had cut the same off each panel based on that one. Three panels would have been too short. Always measure each panel because you can never be sure all panels are the exact same length.
Great suggestion to check the panels! I have some Ikea panels that I bought years ago and then decided to go with their Roman shades instead. Now that I have a new apartment, I'll check the length of all the panels before moving forward. Thank you!!!
I did mine in reverse. I had a nice crisp hem. so, I did the shortened from the top. Already had the round grommets on top. So, I cut the top off shortened the panel, and resewed the panel to the top strip sewing "in the ditch" where the top strip already had a seam under the grommets.
i totally agree with not liking the puddling as well as preference for the clean stacking of the folds vs the scrunching sheered on the rod look. i've never understood the puddling on the floor. Just looks messy and difficult to keep clean.
Thank you so much for this (one more) very helpful video. I wish I had watched it four months ago when I made drapes for our bedroom windows! I used grommets, and grommets mean holes, and, of course, my first set of holes were incorrectly placed. Try fixing that when the holes are done! Your idea of adding loops behind the top would have made it easier to fix or adjust. Also cheaper than buying grommets. Live and learn. Let me take the opportunity to say that I loved your latest video on how you upcyled two sweaters. What you did with the second one (felting in colorful balloons) was magical and inspirational. You’re the best!
Thanks Catherine. I love the invisible loops. I don’t like the grommet type drapes but I don’t like the bunched curtain look for drapes either. I’m going to fix my drapes now!
You address so many little things that come up when sewing not only when curtain-making but at other times as well. Thank you for sharing your tips and ideas. 💖💖💖🌹🌹🌹
I found this way of making curtains amazing, especially sewing on tabs & ifcurtain too long they can easily be adjusted!👏 I've subscribed! BUT REALLY WANTED TO SEE HOW THEY LOOKED ONCE HUNG🥴
Great tips, as always! I have the same issue I want to tackle now. Watching your video made me think of another option... Could I create big button holes that the rod would go through (much like how grommets function)? Of course that cuts a hole... But is that a workable option?? Working with a semi sheer fabric...
I've been a big thumbs down on the puddling all along. If you want your grommetted drapes to hang with the creases equidistant, thread a toilet paper roll on your bar between each grommet.

just a little ways in and you are giving very bad advice. If you are going to be doing the work-do it right! The problem with just cutting off the bottom amount instead of measuring from the top down, is ready mades are rarely even They aren't only uneven from one side to the other, the panels don't always end up the same height either...so if you have two panels and you just take the same amount off of both of them, you are likely to have one panel longer than the other. Also you are showing a more difficult way to press in and measure the hem you are making. The better way would be to measure each panel from the top, pin up to desired length, press along the fold, and if you want a 3 inch hem, leave 6 inches on the length and cut off excess-that way you press the 6 inces in half to creat the 3 inch ( doubled ) hem. ...Ok so you want to do it your way-you are still making it harder to do-press up the entire hem allowance and then go back and press down the 1/2 inch . You can just eye that, so much quicker than what you are doing. ....I wlll watch some more now....using the cut off to make the tabs was a smart idea. That tab raised the curtain, so I am thinking if I had followed your instructions just so, ( assuming rod was in place and you hung the panel on it to get finished length, then the tab placement would have raised the panel ) So that needs factored in.
Omg, now you got me doing math AND sewing. I’m done. 😂😂
The “lin hem” story is hilarious! I could totally see something like that happening to me, making curtains was my first ever sewing project too 😂

That happened to me also, except that I cut and sewed it, not finding the issue until much too late!

SAME!! I have hemmed lots in my 30 years of sewing. Manufacturing do NOT always measure correctly!!
@@debbielynch8728 I worked for a number of years in the garment industry so I know what goes on.

Brilliant! My husband hates the grommets, but grommet curtains seem to be easier to get on sale. I could actually eliminate the grommets!
Very nice tutorial. The curtains look great!

Such a great tip to adjust the loops if the curtains touch the floor!!
Thanks Catherine. I love the invisible loops. I don’t like the grommet type drapes but I don’t like the bunched curtain look for drapes either. I’m going to fix my drapes now!
(I’ll just use white muslin or wide grosgrain ribbon because don’t have extra length to cut off)
Love it... but wanted to see finish product
She showed them on her windows.

Finally in my new apartment and am looking forward to trying these tutorial tips!!
Just got hooked to your channel so easy to understand and love your Canadian accent
So happy to have you on board, eh!? (Just trying to be even more Canadian for you, lol).
So clever with the hem to make the loops. Beats making them from scratch!
Such an excellent tutorial.
Love the neckline!
Another great tip to help home sewers.
Curtains are sooooo cheap that I often buy them for costuming. They especially work well for period plays.
Never thought of doing that. Love it!
Right!!?? It's such a simple improvement on the regular tabs. Thanks for watching!
I found this way of making curtains amazing, especially sewing on tabs & ifcurtain too long they can easily be adjusted!👏 I've subscribed!
BUT REALLY WANTED TO SEE HOW THEY LOOKED ONCE HUNG🥴
This is a great idea!
I like to do a double fold 3 inch hem instead of the little first hem. The extra weight makes the drapes hang better.
This is a good instructional video.
Great tips!
Another great project
I totally agree with you that "Puddling" curtains look awful.
Puddleing makes the curtain look fuller and richer. It also depends what material. Not all look good pooling on the floor.
Great hack! Thanks Catherine. Do you think that we could use a matching 2 in ribbon instead of losing length in the curtain?
Yes! I've done it with inch-wide twill tape and it worked great!
@@CatherineSews thanks. Great video.
Cool loops

Yes, that could work!
Showing the finished product in place would have been nice
She showed them at the very end of the video.
Before cutting anything make sure both the panels are the same length when you take them out of the package...ask me how l know this 😮😮😮
Thank you so much.
Should you wash the curtains before hemming them?
I am a beginner sewer. Could you suggest a sewing machine for me. Easy bobbin loading and back stitching. Easy to use. Thank you
❤ well done👍
Oh, I wanted to see how they skimmed the floor. The top looks nice.
Oh, you know what!? The window I made them for had an electric heater under it, so I had to make them shorter! 😂
Do you use a longer stitch?
Thank you sew much, pun intended!
Instead of fabric loops, I use metal split rings to do the same things, as I find they run on the curtain rod more smoothly
Cat-Fan reporting for duty!!
Thanks buddy!
@@CatherineSews Always a pleasure, My Queen!
So a 2 inch hem would be a "tin" hem? 🤣🤣🤣
Haha, thank you! You're the only one who commented on my silly story. I thought a "lin hem" (aka 1in hem) was hilarious!
Why didn’t we see the finished and hung curtains?? Did they end up not looking so good?
It's right at the end, the last 20 seconds.
I never saw the drapes up! 🥴
I've been a big thumbs down on the puddling all along. If you want your grommetted drapes to hang with the creases equidistant, thread a toilet paper roll on your bar between each grommet.
Why don't you show the curtains up on your windows??
My husband is laughing at your "third of an inch"....but he can't even use a sewing machine!
