  • Hello Cellists,
To be spontaneous or have a plan? Always a good question in music (and in life)! Today on Musings with Inbal I’m sharing the importance of making conscious, informed decisions in Bach’s first suite Sarabande.
Below is a short reading list and helpful links for studying the Bach cello suites. Please let me know if you have any comments and/or questions, I would love to hear from you. Thank you for watching!!

Allen Winold’s book: Bach’s Cello Suites: Analyses and Explorations

"The Fencing Master" and the sequel, "Bach and the Happy Few," are both must reads if I may say so, written by THE baroque cellist of our time, Anner Bylsma.

Another must-have is Barenreiter’s urtext edition, which contains facsimiles of the manuscript copies in the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach, Johann Peter Kellner, as well as the Westphal library manuscript (anonymous copiers), first editions, and more.

Muchas gracias por las ideas...I play doublebass, and this sarabande is part of my study today. Hugs from Ecuador.

Thank you so much for sharing this, I am studying this Sarabande right now and the concept of heavy second beat in the measure really is super important. I am happy to watch your video and being introduced to hemiolas. Also, I really like separating the 3 voices as you suggested and putting them together later, it is increasing my intonation (some chords and hand shape changes create a lot of problems with my intonation). Excellent tips! Thank you so much! Love Sarabandes, they are so elevated and meditative, even the few melodies that I am getting right while I am learning this make me few in another realm of existence! You are inspiring and generous! ❤️🙏🏽🎶

Thanks, this was really interesting! I'm learning the 1st suite on mandolin, and this is by far the hardest so far, it being so dynamic and expressive. Mandolin is really not an instrument that allows a lot of 'room to breathe' as it were, and the other mandolin versions of the sarabande I've heard seem to just shrug and plough through it, but I really want to capture more of the cello spirit in my interpretation of it.
Of course I can't apply your tips on bowing directly, but the reasoning behind your choosing them is very insightful. Just what I needed!
Now to go back and gain some insight on i-iii, and I look forward to your thoughts on the rest that lay ahead of me :)

i’ve been working on this for the past month on mandolin. the diminuendo works well with the shorter sustain of my tiny strings.

Wow!! This was extremely helpful! I have been learning cello for about 4 years in school and on my own time and I've been practicing Bach's 1st Suite. Which Suite (of the 6 Bach Suites) do you recommend I work on next? Or, should I learn them in order (1, 2, etc.)? Thanks!

Hi Luke, thanks for writing. The third suite (C major) is easier than the second in some ways so I would suggest working on it next. Enjoy!
