  • Hello Cellists,
In their book, Dance and the Music of J.S. Bach, Meredith Little and Natalie Jenne discuss three different types of gigues. Our Gigue for today, the E-flat major from Suite No. 4, falls under the “Italian Giga type 1” category. Johann Mattheson writes that Gigues were written for fiddling, not for dancing. More on all of this in today’s masterclass!
Below is a link to my new album and a short reading list with helpful links for studying the Bach cello suites. Please let me know if you have any comments and/or questions, I would love to hear from you. Thank you for watching!!

As usual, this is so helpful! As I’m not a pro, this is a difficult movement to pull off. I’ve been playing it with more “monotonous” bowings, so now my work is cut out for me.

After following these suggestions for a couple years now, the results have been great. The bowings do make it easier to emphasize the movement of the bass line. After working out some more economical fingerings I am able to play it much faster than before.

Hi JayBTS (my son loves the band btw) I will add this to my list. I usually talk about pieces that are requested by a few cellists so hopefully there will be enough requests. Thanks for watching!
