@@gOdkNoWsIWTBF there are dozens of theories as to why. The one you listed while the most common actually has the most going against it as there was no such consistent functionality on the complicated clothing worn by women during the time this was common.
The most prominent theory comes from military dress dictating what side men's clothes adopted and women's was just flipped to distinguish them. And that's only because of how influential military tradition has shown to be on cultures and documents outlining the practice in European militaries. However there still really isn't much to go on to say that conclusively.

The chemistry between Michael and Darryl was always amazing. I wish the writers used it more
They did have great chemistry, but “the office” is great because writers never went overboard with the chemistry between any two or three characters. They kept whole thing balanced. You can see chemistry between Michael and Pam, Michael and Toby hate, Angela and Phyllis hate..they never went overboard with Jim-Pam every episode, it was always there in every episode just adequate enough to allow room for development of other stories and characters.

The length of the jacket is also a sign. Women’s jackets are cut shorter.
Well yeah that's part of the joke. The differences are very subtle so it makes sense that Michael wouldn't have realized as he was going through the discount bin. If it were too obvious the joke wouldn't make sense.
The tiny lapels are the most obvious giveaway 🤣.

That part always makes me laugh.
I love how whenever something seems strange or nudity is involved, they always call it "European." And as a European, I can indeed confirm that everything here is quirky and everyone is naked all the time.
I'm American. We'll notice this or that man will have a Roman-style unparted haircut, designer clothes especially tight pants, move his hands around a lot, cross his legs, walk with un-masculine confidence, and come way too close to your face when he talks to you. And so the game is to guess: "Gay? or European?"
I'm European, and come on, we're not naked ALL the time! Maybe half of it, though.

3. She likes to make cruel jokes to him just to get a reaction outta him.
The possibility of him wearing a woman’s suit is a complete lighting rod to make a cruel joke like that. So he should’ve known that Pam would never defend him on that.

The end slate gets me every time - with all the ambient sounds of an office - it's just so perfectly boring and so true to reality. Each time it feels like the characters have gone back to their desks to sell paper.
