    I am from Holland and I’ll be honest, the payment here is a lot lesser compared to other countries because of our tax system, but you’ll get easily a job here. There is one exception to that rule and that is in research (scientific), because they only work with interns. A large part of our population is old or ready to be retired, so that means they can’t be picky and need to hire graduates. But we do internships during our studies. So when I was done with my internship I got hired immediately. I work in the hospital (lab), but I know that even in tech the need a lot of people. Like I said everywhere in the Netherlands at the moment. The only problems we have now are everything is to expensive these days.

    Best career fairs I went to was at the Society of Women Engineers conferences, and those were full day events. I did get multiple internships from them, but I'm a Mechanical Engineer and I graduated in 2016 so very different situation. I've had my job since I graduated, luckily, but our entire corporate entity has a hold on hiring right now. It's frustrating on the other end too, as we can't get replacements for the people who've left. We like bringing in new college grads so we can train them correctly the first time, as do a lot of other engineering teams, but the HR filters are rough to get through, and the number of applications coming in is high. Right now, the only folks I know of who are hiring are engineering contractor companies (they go on hot and cold streaks) and the US government, especially the DOD.
    In summary: it's not just you. HR is a hot mess and hiring managers are too short-staffed and overwhelmed to filter through people. Good luck on your job hunt, I'll send good vibes your way.

    • @weaponsci
      @weaponsci  Месяц назад

      Yeah events are always gonna be better than applying, since they can put a face to the applicant (as I said in the video). I'm glad you figured something out.
      What's going on at your current job sounds almost exactly like the situation at mine: people leaving and they're not getting replaced. We went from overstaffed to "damn we don't have enough people" in the span of like 3 months or so.

    It's always been tough getting jobs in tech. I had to do two years on a freaking helpdesk that I was overqualified for before anyone would even look at my resume. Luckily I now have a job doing desktop engineering / SCCM / W365 stuff, but it took a TON of BS work and applying to get here.

    If that can reassure you, it's not just you. In france, it's also tough. And I'm working in accounting. It's one of the sectors that is less affected. We don't have to deal with unpaid internship though (like seriously ? Wtf??? Here you legally have to be paid if you spend more than 2 months in the company). I've been looking through other jobs because i'm tired of spending 2 hours and a half per day in the train, but jobs outside of Paris are way tougher to find

    • @weaponsci

    Overnight? I wish I had that.
    As far as my stance on jobs, I'll be moving soon and thus I'll have to quit my current job. My current job pays minimum wage so I need to find something that's better than that which has been difficult... very very difficult.
    I've been trying to find something either overnight or early morning.
    But getting an interview let alone getting a job has been difficult. It's not like no one is hiring. It's more like a bar to clear but it keeps going no matter how close you get.

    UGH tell me about it. 9 GCSEs, 4 A-levels and a degree, and the most I was able to get was a temporary role as a warehouse operative and poll clerk on days where there are elections. Which are NOT OFTEN.
    I've actually gotten a few application acknowledgments (not many, but some), but the one thing I can NEVER do is pass an interview. The two jobs I mentioned above? Didn't require an interview. Warehouse operative only required a drug test and poll clerk required watching a tutorial and filling in a quiz for it. As you said, there are now so many stages to the interview that the chance of you passing all of them is drastically reduced.
    And of course, despite all those videos you mentioned about how to be more employable. They're only useful in a very general sense. What you need is videos or blogs or... SOMETHING about being employed IN YOUR TOWN. And unless you live in a big city or capital, you're very unlikely to find them. Because that's what those videos are based on: how to get a job either in the place where the videomaker lives (and so it worked for them) or in tech where place doesn't matter. What worked in their location won't work everywhere because the industry a town favours varies from town to town.
    Also damn, computer engineering. I'm jealous. I wish I could do something like that. I tried computer science i secondary school because I loved the idea of programming... only to find that I was completely incapable of doing pretty much anything. Despite always being told I'm a logical person and being decently good at maths - got an A in A-level maths and B in A-level further maths - I still can't do 16-year-old level programming. Never works for me, no matter how hard I try, and I can never see what the problem is. Always failing at a basic level and never moving past it (can make a Guess the Number game in Python but beyond that? Nope.)
    Wow, your Shower Thoughts are encouraging me to ramble as well! This must be a special power... Weapons you must stop this series immediately. It is too powerful. It has hypnotic qualities. Lol at that last sentence. But yeah I agree with all of that.
      Because landing a job is such a number's game, it also mystifies the hiring process, as well as any advice people give.
      When people give resume tips for example, as you said with location, it's gonna be dependent on the individuals involved.
      There are some basic things like fitting it on one page, and making sure it's formatted reasonably (grammar, easy to read, etc).
      Most other stuff is pretty much just the preferences of the person giving advice, and more importantly, the preferences of the HR person- if it even passes the ATS to begin with.
      You can guess, but you won't know for sure because you can't just magically read their minds. The hiring person for company X might love one thing, while company Y might think it's an absolute turn off.
      You just don't know, and feedback is so varied and based on opinion and personal experience.
      I guess it's not too dissimilar to dating, except you need a job to live lol

    Haven't even finished the video and I already have so much to say for this(even though we even spoke about this before)
    I have been unemployed for 5 months and just the entire job searching, applying interviewing process itself can be a fulltime job, not to mention some of these processes even if successful takes a few months to even complete. The market for tech now is truly horribly and I'm lucky that my governmen sector here still continues to hire in pretty bad times.
    Another thing about internship that you bought up reminded me how some companies had space for interns but no headcounts for conversation to fulltime positions which is kind of infuriating as well since they hire knowing that's the case

    • @weaponsci
      @weaponsci  Месяц назад +1

      Yeah I'm sorry, it's an ugly situation, like I said at least I have a job for the time being.
      And I have noticed government jobs tend to be a little more lenient with requirements on the description than private sector jobs.
      But even then they can afford to be quite picky too

    Sucks to see so many people dealing with this, and it unfortunately doesn't seem like it'll improve anytime soon. I dread what would happen if I lost my current job. Due to life events I dropped out of college and never finished my Associates Degree in the field I studied for. Unlike a lot of people I actually worked many years in that field already through an apprenticeship so a degree is probably more useless than FC era Gilbert 😂 but even then I had applied to actual companies in that field and every time I'd get to the interview process I wouldn't even be questioned on my knowledge or skillset. They'd hand me a PERSONALITY QUIZ and that's all they'd use to determine if they'd hire me or not. News flash, never got hired 😂 I work at an entirely unrelated job now. Things are... not great, but like you they could be much worse so I try not to complain. Mind you all this was maybe a decade ago and with how much everything's changed I can't even imagine how much more difficult it is now. Especially if it's as bad as you and all these other videos out there make it seem like. It's rough man. The only thing you can do is keep trying and hope to get lucky. I do hope you find something sooner rather than later so you don't have to stress and worry anymore. I enjoy these shower thoughts type videos. I'm sure it's cathartic in a way for you as well.

      Personality quizzes are, best case scenario, often used to determine the applicant's "culture fit" into the company. Worst case, word on the street is it's sometimes used as a subtle way to filter out autistic or other neurodivergent people without outright saying it.

    I tried to be somewhat picky finding a job in my field when I initially starting job hunting. Eventually I just started throwing out as many applications as I could to as many positions as possible (that were in the industry I was interested in). I didn't care if I was totally qualified, I didn't care where it was located, and I did not care what the job entailed. I put in dozens of applications every day. Eventually I got a bite. And now I work in a biopharm lab. The pay is shit, but at least I'm building that experience to get a job in the industry I went to college for in the first place, so that I can get a job that doesn't underpay employees.

    • @weaponsci
      @weaponsci  Месяц назад

      That's good. Yeah, especially with the "entry level needs 3 years experience" stuff, there's no such thing as qualified anymore if you're coming out of school, or switching careers. That's why people start shotgunning.

  • @kevinstreetgaming
    @kevinstreetgaming Месяц назад +4

    This is why college is a scam. You start off your adult life riddled in debt and aren't even guaranteed to get a job in the field you went to college for in the first place. I never went and worked at restaurants and service industry jobs until I got my current job, which I have had for about four years now, and funnily enough, is an overnight job. I love it because I don't have to deal with people as much as I would have to with a "normal" job. lol I guess it all comes down to being in the right place at the right time.

    • @weaponsci
      @weaponsci  Месяц назад

      Basically yeah. It's like the lottery at this point. And I've noticed they always move the goalposts too.
      "Graduate high school, show up with a 'can-do' attitude, give the manager a firm handshake, and you'll be set."
      "Wait, you thought you could get hired with just a diploma? Pfft. Go to college and get a degree!"
      "Wait, you thought you could get hired with just a degree? Pfft. Majoring in Gender Studies won't get you anywhere! (This is true, I agree with that.) Major in something useful like law, medicine, or STEM."
      "Wait, you thought you could get hired with just a STEM degree? Pfft. You can't do that with just the coursework that ate up most of your time. You need to get an internship!"
      "Wait, you thought you could get hired with extracurriculars and internship experience? Pfft. You've never worked in the industry for real! Why would we hire you?"
      What's next, you'll only be considered if you interned at big companies? Something's gotta give at some point.
      Also note: none of this applies to the CEO's nephew who actually will be able to firm handshake his way up the ladder lmao

    As a computer science student, even most internships nowadays require experience as well (or some woke DEI agenda set by the company sponsors; the government). I found this video very relatable. Only way to get experience nowadays is joining the army and choosing a related occupation to your degree.

  • @revwantstobattle
    @revwantstobattle Месяц назад +2

    Sorry to break it to you but college is a scam. Nowadays, especially with the bad economy, companies are less willing to hire new employees since some employees lose interest or quit easily.
    And when you multiply that with how companies value actual work as opposed to a college degree, it means that most of us were screwed over in the long run.
    I was laid off a good job earlier this year and spent the last 7 months applying to new jobs with no avail.

    • @weaponsci
      @weaponsci  Месяц назад

      I also partially blame some parents for this as well.
      Getting a degree to get ahead worked back when they were young, and even though people have been saying ad nauseum "college isn't for everyone" they still push their kids to get degrees because some of them can't fathom the thought of things changing significantly within the 2+ decades between them starting their careers and their kids growing up.

Anyway, I live on disability, so I have no need to go jub hunting. And I am pretty sure that Germany works a whole lot different than the US. It is hard to find jobs here too. My isster is having trouble finding something related to what she is studying. But yeah, WfBM for the win oder so. I am so glad I do not have to deal with this. Imagine finding a safe job for an autistic person. Impossible. Although most of what you said sounds super alien to me. But I always knew college was a scam. "Everyone is hiring! There's a big worker shortage!"
    >Entry level jobs want years of experience
    >Even the most basic manual labour jobs require degrees?
    >Every job has thousands of applicants
    >If God blesses you and YOU DO get a job you'll be fired as soon as someone with slightly more experience regardless of the job
    >Literal racial and religious profiling (despite being illegal they'll still do it and everyone knows it)
    >An insane majority of job listing are literally FAKE jobs that don't exist but are there to collect your personal data and then send you scam email and some times even physical mail (in my experience)
    This is my experience so far... maybe it'll get better when I finish this last year of university and graduate but I don't have a positive view for the future. Maybe I'll win the lottery one day so I can neet my life away happily.
    At career fairs specifically I've been told TO MY FACE "We don't hire white men". So that's about how useful these fairs are where I am.

    • @weaponsci
      @weaponsci  Месяц назад

      - I hate that sentence so much. It's a half truth. There is a shortage of *experienced* people because they're all getting older. Plenty of newbies (especially in tech) were flooded into the market using this exact same message, and companies don't want to train them. All it's really done is drive the wages down. Which, tbf, is probably what they wanted, heh.
      - Also done on purpose so they can get an experienced employee for the salary of an entry-level person.
      - Degrees are everything and nothing at the same time. If you don't have one it's everything because it could gatekeep you from finding certain jobs or getting promoted if you're already in a field. If you do have one, it's nothing, since most job descriptions still want years of experience, as stated before.
      - Yeah I always have to filter by "newest." Lots of jobs can get that many applicants just in several hours. It's crazy. Remember though, "no one wants to work."
      - Yeah the probability (or lack thereof) is insane. As I had said in a previous comment, because it's such a crapshoot, there's no surefire way to gauge if you're doing something wrong either. For example, I've had people suggest that I should always follow up with a thank you email after the interview. Some HR people think it's a sign of high interest and take it as a plus, but I know for a fact others hate it and they view the applicant as annoying or desperate. But you have no way of knowing which type you're in contact with. Plus, if you fail an interview and ask for feedback to figure out what you can do better next time, most companies don't offer that now, because talking to you for too long could open them up to legal trouble if they say something that could be seen as discriminatory. There are just so many variables out of your control even if you are "doing everything right."
      - Yeah, I kinda get you on that one. I remember I was filling out one application and the name field said "no apostrophes" and I was like damn, guess any black people with urban sounding names are gonna get filtered. But it's not necessarily just the "expected" groups either. It can most definitely happen to men and white people too if they have an abundance of that group already and they need someone diverse to fill the position but can't say it, obviously.
      - That really should be illegal, but here we are. It also sucks that you have no way of knowing for sure. Companies do it on purpose to give the illusion of growth and also to reassure their already overworked employees doing three people's jobs for the salary of one that help is on the way (it isn't).
      - Well, you have another year, so maybe things could improve by then (copium).
      - They... shouldn't have done that. I'm gonna sound cliched here but imagine if it was the other way around.
